130. New York State Elementary School Teacher Certification and Examinations in Mathematics in the Nineteenth Century

Abstract

This dissertation is devoted to a history of the New York State elementary school teacher certification requirements, specifically in mathematics, during the nineteenth century. In the last half of nineteenth century, teacher education and uniform certification procedures were beginning to become the norm in the educational systems throughout the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the ways an individual could obtain a elementary school teachers' certificate in New York State at the genesis of teacher certification examinations and to establish an understanding of what mathematical knowledge was required for elementary school teachers in order to obtain a State Certificate. This study analyzes multiple primary sources, including annual reports from New York State and New York City, along with the State Certificate examinations. The examinations in arithmetic, algebra and geometry are analyzed for the mathematics topic of the questions, the number of steps needed to complete the question and the categorizing of the questions according to Bloom's taxonomy (CBT). Five examinations of each subject, arithmetic, algebra and geometry, are analyzed, from the years 1875 to 1898. The topics addressed on the examinations, the number of steps to complete the questions and the CBT of each question are determined and used to establish the required mathematical knowledge of the elementary school teacher. The analysis of the mathematics examinations for State Certificates showed that the content required for elementary school teachers were comparative to the high school mathematics curriculum at the time. The content on the examinations for mathematics was more than the course of study they were going to be teaching in the elementary schools. They were required to have a broad and sophisticated mathematical education, however, less sophisticated than offered in the University. Also on the mathematics examinations, teachers were not assessed in what is now called pedagogical content knowledge. 135. Benefits of the Fiber Optic versus the Electret Microphone in Voice Amplification

Abstract

Background: Voice disorders that result in reduced loudness may cause difficulty in communicating, socializing and participating in occupational activities. Amplification is often recommended in order to facilitate functional communication, reduce vocal load and avoid developing maladaptive compensatory behaviours. The most common microphone used with amplification systems is the electret microphone. One alternate form of microphone is the fiber optic microphone. Aims: To examine the benefits of the fiber optic (1190S) versus the electret (M04) microphone as measured by objective and subjective parameters in the amplification of a patient's voice with reduced loudness caused by neurological and/or respiratory-based problems. Methods & Procedures: Eighteen patients with vocal fold paralysis, Parkinson's disease and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) participated in the study. The study contained a measurement of intensity, amplitude perturbation and signal-to-noise ratio during a sustained vowel production and a measurement of intensity during conversation with the use of the two microphones simultaneously. It also included the completion of a questionnaire indicating the patient's satisfaction with each microphone. Outcomes & Results: The fiber optic (1190S) microphone had better objective acoustic performance (i.e. lower amplitude perturbation, higher signal-to-noise ratio and higher intensity) than the electret (M04) microphone. It also had better patient subjective satisfaction (i.e. less conspicuousness, more voice clarity, less acoustic feedback, more loudness and more utilization) than the electret microphone. Conclusions & Implications: Patients with neurological and/or respiratory-based voice problems may more confidently and frequently use the fiber optic microphone to communicate, socialize and participate in occupational activities more easily. Speech-language pathologists may more confidently use or recommend the fiber optic microphone with amplification systems. (Contains 4 figures, 2 tables, and 2 notes.)

Abstract

Zusammenfassung: Flachdetektoren (FD) sind für die Anwendung in der Radiographie und Fluoroskopie entwickelt worden, um die damaligen Standards – Film-Folien-Kombinationen (FFK) und Bildverstärker (BV) – zu ersetzen. Im Vergleich zu FFK und BV bietet die FD-Technologie eine höhere Dynamik, Verzerrungsfreiheit und eine gesteigerte Dosiseffizienz. Weitere Vorteile sind die Anfertigung Serienaufnahmen, eine sofortige Digitalausgabe und eine kompakte Bauweise. Dies legt auch eine Anwendung von Flachdetektoren in der Computertomographie (CT) nahe. Inzwischen ist die FD-CT weitgehend in der interventionellen und intraoperativen Bildgebung etabliert – meist als C-Bogen-System. Die FD-Technologie hat erstmals die Weichteilbildgebung in der interventionellen Suite ermöglicht, was mit BV-Systemen nicht möglich war. Diese Übersichtsarbeit konzentriert sich auf die technischen Eigenschaften der FD-Technologie im Hinblick auf die interventionelle 3D-Bildgebung. Das Ziel der FD-CT ist nicht, die klinische CT hinsichtlich der typischen diagnostischen Untersuchungen zu ersetzen. Ihre Vorteile sind v. a. praktischer Art, wie die sofortige Verfügbarkeit der CT-Bildgebung während einer Intervention.

141. Governance and internal control in LGOs: a systematic literature review

Abstract

This research examines the literature on governance and especially internal control in local government organisations (LGOs) and responds to three interconnected research questions (RQ): How is research on governance and internal control in local government organisations being evolved? What are the important aspects and criticisms of the literature on governance and internal control in local government organisations? What does the future of governance and internal control in local government organisations look like? Using a systematic literature review technique, we examine 90 peer-reviewed journal publications between 1986 and 2021. Following 2014, we witness an increase in publications, most in a single country, in developed and emerging markets. Studies on governance and internal control in local government organisations emphasise survey/questionnaire/other empirical methods, while the majority employ agency theory as a methodology. Furthermore, we discovered that governance and operational effectiveness are highly valued by academics.

142. Gender dysphoria in children and adolescents: an overview

Abstract

Over the last decade, we have witnessed considerable progress in gender dysphoria (GD) terminology in an attempt to better describe the condition based on certain criteria. The ever-increasing social acceptance and destigmatization of children and adolescents with GD have resulted in an increased number of transgender individuals seeking endocrine care. In addition to terminology and diagnostic criteria, the tremendous progress of genetics and neuroimaging has enabled us to have a deeper understanding of the complex pathogenesis of GD. Although helpful guidelines for treatment with GnRH analogs and gender-affirming hormones have been proposed, several challenges and controversies still exist. In this article, the current knowledge about GD in adolescents is reviewed, with particular emphasis on terminology, clinical manifestations, and epidemiologic data. The neurobiological basis of the condition is presented, and both hormonal treatment and mental issues of transgender individuals are discussed. Undoubtedly, further research will optimize the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of children and adolescents with GD.

143. Acceleration-Based Low-Cost CW Radar System for Real-Time Elderly Fall Detection

Abstract

Falls can be one of the most damaging events that elders may experience in their lives, especially when they live alone. The impact of a fall can vary from minor bruises, to life altering fractures and even become fatal. The purpose of this study is to establish a novel non-contact radar method of detecting an elderly fall when occurred in home staying. The novelty of the proposed detection technique is the exploitation of a 1D effective acceleration derived from Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT). This technique was tested utilizing a 2.45 GHz Continuous Wave (CW) Radar implemented with a Software Defined Radio (SDR) and low-cost, off-the-shelf components. Herein, we present test results that classify incidents as either falls or non-falls in line-of-sight cases. Firstly, the results are compared with the corresponding values measured with a commercial marker-based optoelectronic motion capture multi-camera system (VICON) showing high similarity. Furthermore, real-time scenarios were conducted to estimate the accuracy and the number of false alarms of the proposed method. The proposed algorithm is proved capable of exploiting the Power Burst Curve (PBC) as a preliminary factor to yield an efficient fall incident classifier based on the effective acceleration, while minimizing the required processing resources.

144. An All-Polarization, Beamforming, and DoA Ready, Г–Dipole Antenna Array

Abstract

A novel miniature all-polarization $\Gamma $ antenna array for demanding 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT) applications is proposed. The antenna is designed to be able to perform direction of arrival (DoA) and beamforming keeping the antenna’s footprint as minimal as possible to fit in or wrapped around any IoT device. It is a nonuniform square array comprised of novel right-corner dipoles which are mirror-placed to additionally allow all polarization properties. These properties are inherited from its approximate equivalence to a cross-dipole antenna with additional features and flexibility. An analytical mathematical formulation is presented resulting in a closed form for the $\Gamma $ –dipole as well as the four dipoles array. Numerical simulations proved the antenna performance and verified that all of its features are approximately retained even when it is curved. The antenna is prototyped in both an improvised wire dipole (planar or curved) and as printed on an FR-4 substrate. The measured results confirmed the analytical and numerical ones regarding the antenna all-polarization, beamforming, and DoA features.

149. The Implementation of a Collaborative Action Research Programme for Developing Inclusive Practices: Social Learning in Small Internal Networks

Abstract

The idea of inclusive education has featured very highly in the educational priorities of many educational systems. However, the same educational systems are very often criticised because of the difficulties of their teachers to respond to inclusive environments of learning, where all children, despite their abilities, receive equal opportunities in teaching and learning. In this study, we implement a programme of collaborative action research with the purpose of investigating the degree to which it could contribute to the development of inclusive practices. The research reported here took place in a primary school classroom in Cyprus. Our findings from this research shed further light on the nature of differentiation in the preparation and teaching of teachers in relation to inclusive education as well as on the role of teachers as leaders in this process. The collaborative process was successful because it supported experimentation and reflection and provided to all involved opportunities to consider new possibilities. Our experience from this process suggests that if we are interested in developing such practices we cannot follow simple formulas. Rather what we need is a system of social learning within the workplace that builds on existing conditions. Inclusive practices in Cyprus schools, then, should not be approached as simplistic recipes or trite formulas but as social learning that will be developed in small networks and communities of practice.
