Introduction: This study examines suicide among older adults in Honduras over a 15-year period (2008-2022). Methods: Data were collected from the National Violence Observatory attached to the University Institute of Democracy, Peace and Security of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (ONV-IUDPAS-UNAH), and 593 suicide cases were analyzed with a quantitative approach of descriptive scope, to identify suicide decedent characteristics and patterns in the cases. Results: It was observed that 94.1% of the suicide decedents were male, with an average age of 70 years, predominantly from urban areas; the highest prevalence was in 2021 (7.77), generally in the mornings and mostly by hanging or asphyxiation in private spaces. Discussion: There is a significant difference in the prevalence of suicide by gender (16 males per female). Similar to worldwide reports, an increase in post-pandemic suicides is observed. The aging of the population and the increasing incidence of suicide in older adults gives relevance to this study, which has been limited by the lack of systematic data collection and previous research that would allow a better understanding of the problem and, in turn, the generation of public policies focused on the mental health of older adults. Olive oil, a staple of the Mediterranean diet, encounters substantial commercial obstacles in Spain and other olive oil-producing nations. Historically, these obstacles have been examined from a consumer demand standpoint, focusing on aspects such as quality enhancement, pricing issues, and consumer awareness deficiencies. This study shifts the focus to the supply-side perspective, providing novel insights into the factors affecting the marketing and sale of olive oil. To investigate these factors, a comprehensive consultation with an expert panel consisting of industry leaders from olive oil mills was conducted. These experts evaluated 13 critical factors identified through a literature review and their practical experience. The findings from this panel offer immediate practical applications, emphasizing the importance of marketing strategies, professionalization, internationalization, and the utilization of social networks and e-commerce in driving olive oil sales. The implications of these findings suggest that companies must restructure to become more professional and market-oriented to navigate and surmount the traditional commercial barriers in the olive oil industry. Overall, this research enhances our understanding of the supply-side dynamics influencing the marketing and sale of olive oil in the Spanish context and beyond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar la invarianza factorial y la fiabilidad con respecto al sexo del Cuestionario de Regulación Emocional (ERQ) en una muestra de jóvenes ecuatorianos. Se trata de un estudio instrumental de la equivalencia de medida o invarianza factorial del ERQ y de la fiabilidad. Participaron 435 estudiantes de bachillerato (53,8% mujeres), con edades comprendidas entre 14 y 20 (X̅= 16.7; s= 1.4). El modelo de dos factores es confirmado con χ²= 145.4 gl (68); p< .001;χ²/gl= 2.1; GFI= .94; CFI= .91 y RMSEA= .05 [.03 - .06]. Las restricciones al modelo en la equivalencia de medida muestran que este es invariante con respecto al sexo. Además, la fiabilidad muestra que las magnitudes son aceptables con ωSE= .636; ωRC= .762 en hombres y ωSE= .694; ωRC= .742 en mujeres. Se evidencia que el modelo del ERQ es invariante con respecto al sexo y que, a su vez, es fiable.

En este texto los autores relatan las experiencias de cambios e innovaciones vividas en su escuela, en Totalán, desde finales de los años 70 y como un grupo de docentes universitarios, entre los que se encontraba Ángel Pérez Gómez, les acompañó en su proceso de renovación pedagógica.

La Responsabilidad Social Universitaria (RSU) se ha convertido en una aliada en temas de competitividad en las Instituciones de Educación Superior. Su éxito radica en la definición de la planeación estratégica desde la óptica de la responsabilidad social, es decir, desde la identificación de la institución como parte de un sistema en el que las acciones realizadas generan un impacto, tanto al interior como al exterior, en términos sociales, económicos y ambientales. En este sentido, las universidades deben desarrollar estrategias que deriven de su filosofía empresarial y pongan de manifiesto el compromiso social existente con cada uno de los grupos de interés, incluyendo el ambiente, creando valor en las actividades realizadas.

El síndrome de apnea del sueño (SAS) consiste en la aparición de episodios recurrentes de limitación al paso del aire durante el sueño, como consecuencia de una alteración anatómico-funcional de la vía aérea superior que conduce a su colapso. El propósito de esta revisión exploratoria de la literatura es que el odontólogo general, con especial énfasis en el odontopediatra y el ortodoncista, tengan un instrumento sencillo y práctico que le ayude a familiarizar y discernir entre todos los parámetros clínicos de relevancia para lograr una apropiada diagnosis, logrando brindar una atención y el abordaje correcto a dichos pacientes. La consulta electrónica se realizó mediante la base de datos PubMed, LILACS, SCIELO y Cochrane Library, utilizando las palabras: Apnea, hipoapnea, apnea obstructiva del sueño y protocolo, sin establecer un límite de años.

Abstract Background AURA study reported 61% objective response rate and progression-free survival of 9.6 months with osimertinib in patients with EGFR/T790M+ non-small cell lung cancer. Due to lack of real-world data, we proposed this study to describe the experience with osimertinib in Spain. Methods Post-authorization, non-interventional Special Use Medication Program, multicenter, retrospective study in advanced EGFR/T790M+ non-small cell lung cancer. One hundred-fifty five patients were enrolled (August 2016–December 2018) from 30 sites. Primary objective: progression-free survival. Secondary objectives: toxicity profile, objective response rate, and use of health service resources. Results 70% women, median age 66. 63.9% were non-smokers and 99% had adenocarcinoma. Most patients had received at least one prior treatment (97%), 91.7% had received previous EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors and 2.8% osimertinib as first-line treatment. At data cutoff, median follow-up was 11.8 months. One hundred-fifty five patients were evaluable for response, 1.3% complete response, 40.6% partial response, 31% stable disease and 11.6% disease progression. Objective response rate was 42%. Median progression-free survival was 9.4 months. Of the 155 patients who received treatment, 76 (49%) did not reported any adverse event, 51% presented some adverse event, most of which were grade 1 or 2. The resource cost study indicates early use is warranted. Conclusion This study to assess the real-world clinical impact of osimertinib showed high drug activity in pretreated advanced EGFR/T790M+ non-small cell lung cancer, with manageable adverse events. The cultivation of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) under agroforestry systems, generates beneficial environmental conditions for cocoa crop physiology. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of shade trees (Spanish elm trees - Cordia alliodora (Ruiz & Pavon) Oken) planted along with cocoa (clone CCN51) under an agroforestry system on cocoa’s gas exchange parameters regarding the reduction of the light intensity over the cocoa-leaf canopy. The experiment was developed in the Centro de Investigación el Nus - Agrosavia, located in the municipality of San Roque, Antioquia. The experimental design used was a randomized complete block design for the cocoa planting distances from the first row of Spanish elm trees interfacing with the cocoa plantation (4 m, 7 m, 10 m, 13 m). The statistical analysis was performed by estimating the area under the curve (AUC) of each variable, using the trapezoid equation of the statistical environment SAS® 9.4, an analysis of variances was performed to determine if there were statistical differences between treatments, and Tukey’s test at 5% probability was used to estimated statistical differences between means. There were significant differences in the treatments regarding the net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E). The highest values of gas exchange parameters were found in the plants located 13 m from elm trees, while the lowest values were presented at 4 m. Plants at 7 m and 10 m always showed intermediate values for all gas exchange parameters. In the same sense, plants at 13 m had a higher radiation use efficiency (RUE) compared to plants at 4 m. The arboreal component modified the environmental conditions on cocoa trees regarding its distribution, generating a differential response to the physiological behavior of cocoa plants.

A descriptive, cross-sectional study is presented in a group of adolescents between 15 and 18 years old from the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Teaching Polyclinic in the municipality of Campechuela in 2017 with the aim of characterizing risky sexual behavior for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). Most of the adolescents had started sexually and the starting ages were between 13 and 15 years. Adolescents show low perception of STI risk, less than half of the surveyed adolescents protect themselves. The most widely used method of protection is the condom, and there is no healthy, protective practice to prevent STI. Resumen Se presenta un estudio descriptivo, de corte transversal, en un grupo de adolescentes entre 15 y 18 años del Policlínico Docente Gustavo Aldereguía Lima, del municipio Campechuela, en el año 2017, con el objetivo de caracterizar la conducta sexual de riesgo para infecciones de transmisión sexual (ITS). La mayoría de los adolescentes se habían iniciado sexualmente y las edades de inicio fueron entre 13 y 15 años. Los adolescentes muestran baja percepción del riesgo de ITS, menos de la mitad de los adolescentes encuestados se protegen. El método de protección más utilizado es el condón, y no hay una práctica protectora para prevenir las ITS.

La investigación se realizó en Tamiahua, Veracruz. Con el objetivo de evaluar la erosión hídrica; Se tomaron datos sobre la pérdida de suelo cada mes. Se utilizó la técnica de clavos y rondanas en dos sitios con diferente manejo de suelo, para ello, se trazaron dos áreas con tres transectos cada uno, separados a cinco metros cada punto. Se consideró el área con diferente cubierta vegetal. Se estimó la pérdida de suelo en ambas áreas, resultando con notoria diferencia entre ellas, mostrando con ello, que, si se mantiene el suelo con cubiertas vegetales naturales o antrópicas, se evita la pérdida de suelo, que, al medirse continuamente, se incrementa esa cantidad, lo que provoca un empobrecimiento del suelo con el paso del tiempo. Se pusieron barreras de protección o contención desde inicio, con madera de tarro en forma de V, con doble propósito, el primero, para evitar la pérdida de suelo y para realizar la toma de muestra, para su análisis en el laboratorio de suelos de la Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias, donde ambas muestras resultaron con textura migajonosa (franca), con pH alcalino, también con suficiente materia orgánica. De esta forma, con la estimación de la pérdida del suelo en los sitios de los clavos y con el sedimento atrapado cerca de ellos, se demuestra que, en pendientes pronunciadas, en temporada de lluvias, existe riesgo de pérdida de suelo fértil si no se le realizan medidas preventivas de protección como barreras, incrementándose, además, si se mantiene el suelo desnudo, sin cubierta vegetal. Lo anterior, permite crear conciencia para dar un manejo adecuado a los suelos.

Se determinó el efecto de dos dosis de ácido acetilsalicílico (AAS), en la producción de leche (PL), concentración de glucosa (CG) en sangre y días a primer servicio (DPS) en vacas sanas de doble propósito. Se seleccionaron al azar 30 vacas y se dividieron en tres grupos de 10 individuos cada uno: Control sin tratamiento (C); grupo dosis alta (DA; 7 g/24 hrs/VO) y grupo dosis baja (DB; 5 g/24 hrs/VO). Posterior a su aplicación se monitorearon los siguientes indicadores: Temperatura Rectal (TR), Condición Corporal (CC; escala del 1–5); Mastitis Subclínica (MS), metritis (M), CG, DPS y PL. El análisis estadístico se realizó utilizando el modelo ANOVA. Los resultados indicaron que las vacas con DA tuvieron mayor (P0.05). Finalmente, las vacas con DA presentaron menos MS (P < 0.05), seguidas por DB y las control. En conclusión, el tratamiento con la DA de AAS durante tres días consecutivos al parto mejoró la producción de leche y redujo el número de casos de MS, comparado con la DB y C, pero no redujo las vacas con M o los DPS.

Introduction: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory entity characterized by a partially reversible limitation of airflow. Its main risk factor is smoking and there are multiple factors associated with its high mortality. Objective: to identify the factors associated with death in COPD patients belonging to the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Docente “Dr. Salvador Allende”, in the period from January 1 to December 31, 2019. Method: an analytical observational epidemiological study of cases and controls was carried out. The cases were deaths (n=34) with a diagnosis of COPD, and the controls were living patients (n=59) with this diagnosis confirmed at discharge. Demographic and clinical variables were considered. The variables were considered: age, sex, smoking, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cor pulmonale, cancer, degree of COPD, cause of hospitalization, site of hospitalization and need for invasive mechanical ventilation. Descriptive statistical methods, univariate and multivariate analysis were used to calculate risk, and logistic regression to assess confounding factors. Results: there was a predominance of patients over 65 years of age, and females. The variables associated with death from COPD were: cancer comorbidity (OR: 5.1; 95% CI: 1.2-22.4; p=0.032) and need for invasive mechanical ventilation (OR: 6.5; CI 95%: 1.1-38.3; p=0.04). Conclusions: cancer comorbidity and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation behave as risk factors for mortality in patients with COPD.

RESUMEN Introducción: La pandemia por COVID 19 ha generado una atmósfera de interrogantes sobre el proceder más adecuado del reparto de bienes escasos, invitándonos a reflexionar sobre cómo los principios bioéticos y la calidad asistencial en el campo de los cuidados paliativos se han visto amenazados en aras proteger la salud pública. Métodos: Revisión de la literatura desde el 1 de marzo 2020 hasta el 11 de noviembre del 2021 con los descriptores “ bioethics”, “ end of life” , “ palliative care” , “SARS CoV2” y “quality of life ” en bases de datos biomédicas (PUBMED, MEDLINE, WOS, PLOs) y en Google Académico; documentación de asociaciones destacadas en materia de bioética y legislación española relacionada con la autonomía del paciente, seguridad y salud laboral publicada en el Boletín Oficial del Estado. Resultados y discusión: El sistema sanitario se ha visto obligado a modificar los cuidados de fin de vida con el objetivo común de disminuir la expansión del virus, la incidencia de la enfermedad y la tasa de letalidad del virus. La sanidad reinventa la asistencia médica para poder mantener una adecuada calidad asistencial sin menoscabar los principios éticos básicos. Conclusiones y perspectivas: Existe una escasa protocolización sobre la atención de los pacientes al final de vida en la era post-COVID. La implementación de nuevas guías y protocolos de aislamiento, asistencia domiciliaria,pases de visita médica telemáticos, entre otros, podrían ayudar a respetar en mayor medida los criterios bioéticos básicos y mejorar la calidad asistencial en este subgrupo de pacientes. ABSTRACT Introduction: The COVID 19 pandemic has generated an atmosphere of questioning about the most appropriate course of action in the sharing of scarce goods, inviting us to reflect on how bioethical principles and quality of care in the field of palliative care have been threatened in the interest of protecting public health. Methods: Literature review from March 1, 2020 through November 11, 2021 with the descriptors " bioethics", " end of life" , "palliative care", " SARS CoV2" and "quality of life " in biomedical databases (PUBMED, MEDLINE, WOS, PLOs) and in Google Scholar; documentation of leading associations in bioethics and Spanish legislation related to patient autonomy, occupational safety and health published in the Official State Gazette. Results and discussion: The healthcare system has been forced to modify end-of-life care with the common goal of decreasing the spread of the virus, the incidence of the disease and the case fatality rate of the virus. The health system is reinventing medical care in order to maintain an adequate quality of care without undermining basic ethical principles. Conclusions and perspectives: There is little protocolization of end-of-life care in the post-COVID era. The implementation of new guidelines and protocols for isolation, home care, telematic medical visit passes, among others, could help to respect basic bioethical criteria to a greater extent and improve the quality of care in this subgroup of patients.

De forma progresiva y paulatina, pero aparentemente inevitable, el desarrollo de la robótica avanza y se integra cada vez más en nuestras vidas. A diferencia del enfoque industrial, concebido para entornos cerrados y predecibles, la robótica interactiva opera en entornos abiertos, complejos y caóticos en los que el ser humano pasa a estar en el centro del diseño. Esta transición, de lo industrial a lo personal, pero también a lo social, amplía el alcance de la investigación tradicional a múltiples disciplinas y trae consigo nuevos desafíos tanto éticos como tecnocientíficos. Lo que se pretende en este artículo es, precisamente, realizar una cartografía de los mismos a partir de un diálogo con sus protagonistas. Para este propósito, a nivel conceptual, partiremos de una metáfora característica a la hora de plantear dimensiones básicas de un robot, esto es, asumir que, al igual que nosotros, estos sienten, piensan y actúan. Así, desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar, trazaremos una narrativa que muestra las posibilidades y las limitaciones de este enfoque a la vez que ilustra sus implicaciones.

This study explored substance use trajectories and associations with mental health among an ethnically/racially diverse college student sample before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. We combined repeated cross-sections and panel data from a total of 3,247 college students assessed with an online survey in 2018, 2019, and in three waves in 2020. We estimated trends in substance use and their relation to mental health over the survey waves using generalized estimating equations (GEE). Our results revealed notable associations between 30-day substance use patterns, time of assessment, and psychological well-being. These findings suggest a complex interplay between access to substances, context of substance use, and mental health. We discuss several initiatives that have been launched in response to the results of this ongoing study. Such initiatives may serve as examples for expanding similar efforts to other commuter colleges to prevent further increases in mental health problems and risky substance use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we consider the ethical-political basis of a new conception of human vulnerability in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), proposing its incorporation in the development of emerging robotic technology.We reflect on the notion of assistance. The CRPD suggests a new conception based on the social recognition of personal autonomy through a set of human rights, grounded on the value of respect for the diversity of human functionings. The capability approach (Martha Nussbaum) provides important theoretical support for this new conception. From this new perspective of justice, focused on inclusive human development, we argue that the role of healthcare robotics should be reoriented towards an inclusive robotics: one that, in addition to contributing to care, enables support for what people can do in different life stages, facilitating their inclusion in diverse social environments (education, work environment, etc.).

Long-term monitoring programs of species at risk are efficacious tools to assess population changes, evaluate conservation strategies, and improve management practices to ensure populations reach levels at which they can fulfill their ecological roles. For sea turtles, annual nesting beach surveys are the most accessible method to estimating the population abundance and reproductive output, especially when these are done in primary nesting sites. However, little data exist on the long-term assessment of these parameters. Here, we present the trends of the nest abundance, female size, hatching, and emergence success of hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and green (Chelonia mydas) turtles at key nesting beaches in the southern Gulf of Mexico over 31 years (from 1990 to 2021). The nest abundance showed an increasing trend in both species as a result of the sustained protection and conservation effort, but there was no significant temporal trend in the annual female size, clutch size, hatching, and emergence success. However, these indicators showed decreasing mean values over the last decade and should be closely monitored. We suggest these decreases link to the combined effects of ocean warming and anthropogenic pressures affecting the sea turtle foraging grounds. Aside from protecting key nesting sites, protecting and restoring crucial foraging habitats should be an immediate priority requiring international cooperation.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is vital to ensuring the integrity of people and structures during earthquakes, especially considering the catastrophic consequences that could be registered in countries within the Pacific ring of fire, such as Ecuador. This work reviews the technologies, architectures, data processing techniques, damage identification techniques, and challenges in state-of-the-art results with SHM system applications. These studies use several data processing techniques such as the wavelet transform, the fast Fourier transform, the Kalman filter, and different technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning. The results of this review highlight the effectiveness of systems aiming to be cost-effective and wireless, where sensors based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are standard. However, despite the advancement of technology, these face challenges such as optimization of energy resources, computational resources, and complying with the characteristic of real-time processing.
