Abstract

For an improved determination of the 7Be(p, γ)8B absolute cross section, the reaction is studied in inverse kinematics. The study involves a 7Be radioactive ion beam of 8.0 MeV, a windowless H2 gas target, and an efficient recoil separator for the detection of the 8B residual nuclides. The techniques used to produce such a beam as well as the first direct observation of 8B are reported.

Abstract

The composition of particulate matter in the atmosphere has been studied in four major italian towns (Florence, Genoa, Milan and Naples) by means of Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques. The aerosol has been simultaneously collected in the four towns during the first weeks of 2001, by two-stage continuous streaker samplers, which separate the particulate matter in two fractions (fine and coarse fraction of PM10). The hourly concentrations in air of about 20 elements have been deduced by Particle Induced X-ray Emission, PIXE, analyses performed with the external proton beam facility of the 3 MV accelerator of INFN, at the Physics Department of the University of Florence.RIASSUNTO- La composizione del particolato atmosferico in quattro grandi città italiane (Firenze, Genova, Milano e Napoli) è stata studiata con tecniche di Ion Beam Analysis (IBA). I campioni di particolato sono stati raccolti simultaneamente nelle quattro città durante le prime settimane del 2001 per mezzo di campionatori continui a due stadi (streaker samplers),che separano e raccolgono il particolato in due frazioni granulometriche (frazioni fine e grossa del PM10). L'andamento orario della concentrazione di una ventina di elementi è stato dedotto tramite misure PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission), eseguite col setup di fascio esterno dell'acceleratore dell'INFN presso il Dipartimento di Fisica dell'Università di Firenze.

Abstract

The reaction 12C(α,γ)16O has a strong influence on both stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis after the helium burning stage in massive stars. The E1 amplitude of this astrophysical important reaction was measured in inverse kinematics using a 4He windowless gas target and an intense 12C ion beam in combination with an array of HPGe detectors. The results of this measurement were extrapolated to the relevant energy for helium burning (E0=300 keV) using the R-matrix formalism of nuclear reactions. The error on the extrapolated value was determined via a Monte Carlo procedure. The results of this experiment and of their extrapolation to E0 are presented and compared with previous data.

Abstract

A distributed system based on intelligent substations and a central MacIntosh II console has been designed to perform automatic monitoring and control of the HVEC TTT-3 tandem of our University. Each substation is a crate containing a G-64 bus, a 6809 CPU and several specific interfaces connected to various accelerator devices (e.g.: vacuum meters, valve-, quartz- and Faraday cup actuators, magnet supplies and related field meters, etc.). Communications between peripheral stations and central console are supported by a low-cost optical link. All interfaces are commercial ones, except a few designed for the purpose, particularly an ADC board which performs in hardware a conversion of the digitized data in absolute values according to a previously stored table. Modular software has been developed to obtain user-friendly system interaction, taking advantage of the graphic interface of the MacIntosh.

Abstract

The stopping power of atomic and molecular deuterons in 3 He gas was measured over the range Ed = 10 to 100 keV using the 3 He pressure dependence of the 3 He(d,p) 4 He reactionyield. At en ergies above 30 keV, the observed stopping power values are in good agreement with a standard compilation. However, near 18 keV the experimental values drop by a factor 50 below the extrapolated values of the compilation. In a simple model, the behavior is due to the minimum 1s → 2s electronexcitationof the He target atoms (= 19.8 eV, corresponding to Ed = 18.2 keV), i.e. it is a quantum effect, by which the atoms become nearly transparent for the ions.

Abstract

The performance of semi-insulating GaAs detectors, grown with the LEC technique, has been studied by irradiating the Schottky diodes with 2 and 2.4 MeV monoenergetic protons in a pencil beam with sub-millimeter width (70 or 600 μm). The beam was moved across the surface of the front (Schottky) contact, in order to investigate the uniformity of the detection characteristics over the sensitive area of the diodes, and to study the electric field behavior around the Schottky contact. For each scanning position, a pulse-height spectrum was measured. Then, the charge collected and the energy resolution were obtained as a function of the irradiation position both on the contact and outside it. The data show that • the best spectroscopic response occurs for the beam with 70 μm width, • when the beam is incident onto the contact, the energy resolution is between 1% and 5%, and the variation of the charge collected, for different irradiation position, is less than 30%, • when the beam is incident onto the border of the contact (substrate is irradiated), the spectrum is degraded and no clear peak is present, • collection of charge still occurs at distances up to about 500 μm from the border of the Schottky contact (for a pixel size of 200 μm), or up to about 200 μm (for a pixel diameter of 3 mm), • saturation of the curve collected charge vs. reverse bias voltage occurs at about 100 V for both 2 MeV (range=32 μm) and 2.4 MeV protons (range=41 μm).

Abstract

A data transfer problem using FERA modules was found in a heavy ion nuclear physics experiment. The source of the problem was spotted in the handling of some signals on the FERA control bus. A modification of this handling is proposed and performed by means of a new CAMAC-FERA control module, the EBOFERA. Furthermore, this module has a number of useful features like the master gate and clear signals handling, event tagging, pattern unit and event counter.

Abstract

Nuclear fusion reactions play a key role in the understanding of energy production, neutrino emission and nucleosynthesis of the elements in stars. The direct measurement of the cross section of these reactions at the relevant energies is usually hampered by cosmic radiation, beam induced background and/or the radioactivity of the nuclei involved. In order to suppress these background contributions one can either place an experiment underground [1,2] or exploit coincedence techniques between the reaction products. The major aspect in this contribution is the efficient detection of the recoil nucleus in a direct capture reaction.

Abstract

We discuss the preliminary results obtained by studying the α+9Be elastic scattering at bombarding energies from 3.5 to 10 MeV. Experimental spectra show the presence of elastic and inelastic scattering phenomena. Elastic scattering excitation functions have been obtained at various angles; their shape is in good agreement with data at backward angles reported in the literature.

Abstract

γ-rays are measured in coincidence with the dissipative complex fragments from the35Cl +64Ni reaction at 7.7 A MeV. Theoretical γ-ray coincidence spectra are determined through a fitting procedure using the contribution of the excited fragment statistical γ-decay calculated by means of the CASCADE code. Whereas the expected statistical spectra fit very well the data in the energy regionE ν=2 to 8 MeV, above this energy another emission mechanism in addition to the statistical decay has to be considered in order to reproduce the experimental spectra. Simulations based on the Vlasov equation suggest that this emission could come from the decay of dipole strength excited in the intermediate dinuclear system.

Abstract

Uncertainties surround the radiobiological consequences of exposure to charged particles, despite the increasing use of accelerated ion beams for cancer treatment (hadrontherapy). In particular, little is known about the long-term effects on normal tissue at the beam entrance or in the distal part of the Spread-Out Bragg Peak (SOBP). Moreover, although the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of particle radiation has been traditionally related to the radiation linear energy transfer (LET), it has become increasingly evident that radiation-induced cell death, as well as long term radiation effects, is not adequately described by this parameter. Hence, exploring the effectiveness of various ion beams at or around the Bragg peak of monoenergetic ion beams can prove useful to gain insights into the role played by parameters other than the particle LET in determining the outcome of particle radiation exposures. In this context, the upgrade of the Tandem irradiation facility at Naples University here described, has allowed us to perform a series of preliminary radiobiological measurements using proton and carbon ion beams. The facility is currently used to irradiate normal and cancer cell lines with ion beams such as oxygen and fluorine.

Abstract

The thermally induced change of the birefringence of a high‐birefringence fused‐silica optical fiber, when exposed to a proton beam (2 MeV, 0.5–44 nA, 5‐mm spot diameter), was measured with a fiber‐optic polarimetric sensor. A short length (5 cm) of 125‐μ‐diam, single‐mode, polarization‐maintaining optical fiber was put orthogonally to the beam in vacuo and the linear polarization of a HeNe laser beam launched into the fiber was analyzed by a polarizer and recorded by a photodetector. The response of the sensor both to a continuous and to a modulated proton beam was studied. The photodetector output, which varies with the cosine of the induced relative phase retardance between the fiber eigenmodes, provides a dc or an ac (10 Hz test modulation frequency) measurement of the beam current. This device acts as a proton beam intensity monitor, with minimum beam perturbation and a sensitivity of 0.1 nA. Its possible use also as a beam position monitor or as a wire‐scanner beam profiler is suggested.

Abstract

The accelerator mass spectrometry system based on the 16 MV tandem accelerator at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro is described. A high-resolution electrostatic deflector rejects isotopic background and other unwanted beams transmitted with the same magnetic rigidity as the rare isotope. Use of this system for 10 Be and 36 Cl measurements in enriched and natural samples is presented.

Abstract

The LUNA Collaboration has recently completed the first measurement of the 3 He( 3 He,2p) 4 He reaction in the Gamow peak region. A new phase, based on a new, 400 kV accelerator, has started and it is aimed to the study, at very low energy, of other relevant reactions of the p-p chain and of the CNO cycle. Measurements of electron screening effects are also planned.

We present here an important test of the main feature of the Trojan Horse Method (THM), namely the suppression of Coulomb effects in the entrance channel due to off‐energy‐shell effects. This is done by measuring the THM p—p elastic scattering via the p+d→p+p+n reaction at 4.7 and 5 MeV, corresponding to a p—p relative energy ranging from 80 to 670 keV. In contrast to the on‐energy‐shell (OES) case, the extracted p‐p cross section does not exhibit the Coulomb‐nuclear interference minimum due to the suppression of the Coulomb amplitude. This is confirmed by the half‐off‐energy shell (HOES) calculations and strengthened by the agreement with the calculated OES nuclear cross sections.

Abstract

The 7 Be 2 − dimer has been observed for the first time in an experiment aiming to perform 14 C measurements by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) using an ion source previously utilized for the production of a radioactive 7 Be beam. It was found that detection of the undissociated dimer in the 3 + charge state simulates 14 C, contributing significantly to the background in isotopic ratios measurements.

Abstract

We report on the results obtained from the study of the 32S +74Ge deep inelastic reaction at incident energy E= 320 MeV. High-energy γ-rays were detected in an array of 6 seven-pack BaF2 clusters. Coincidence with complex fragments detected in 12 three-stage telescopes ensured the selection of peripheral reaction events. In order to investigate the pre-equilibrium dipole strength excitation two independent analyses were performed. In the first analysis the energy spectra of the γ-rays were evaluated in the statistical model framework while in the second one the γ-ray fragment angular correlation with respect to the nuclear spin vector of the composite system was studied. Both methods indicate the excitation of dipole strength in the highly deformed dinucleus and provide dipole resonance parameter sets that are in good agreement with each other.

Abstract

Selected experiments in fundamental physics have been proposed for many years at the Tandem Accelerator of the University of Napoli ‘Federico II’s Department of Physics as a part of a one-semester laboratory course for graduate students. The aim of this paper is to highlight the educational value of the experimental realization of the nuclear reaction 19F(p,α)16O. Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay of nuclei, if observed, would have important implications on fundamental physics. In particular it would give access to the effective neutrino mass. In order to extract such information from 0νββ decay half-life measurements, the knowledge of the Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) is of utmost importance. In this context the NUMEN and the NURE projects aim to extract information on the NME by measuring cross sections of Double Charge Exchange reactions in selected systems which are expected to spontaneously decay via 0νββ. In this work an overview of the experimental challenges that NUMEN is facing in order to perform the experiments with accelerated beams and the research and development activity for the planned upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities is reported.

Abstract

The use of double charge exchange reactions is discussed in view of their application to extract information that may be helpful to determinate the nuclear matrix elements entering in the expression of neutrinoless double beta decay half-life. The strategy adopted in the experimental campaigns performed at INFN - Laboratori Nazionali del Sud and in the analysis methods within the NUMEN project is briefly described, emphasizing the advantages of the multi-channel approach to nuclear reaction data analysis. An overview on the research and development activities on the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer is also given, with a focus on the chosen technological solutions for the focal plane detector which will guarantee the performances at high-rate conditions.

Abstract

A 7Be ion beam of several particle pA at 8 MeV has been produced at the TTT3 tandem of the University "Federico II" in Naples. The 7Be nuclides were formed via the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction using a metallic Li target and an 11.4 MeV proton beam of 20 μA intensity, delivered by the cyclotron in Debrecen. Methods of hot chemistry were used to extract the 7Be nuclides from the Li matrix and to prepare the 7Be cathodes for the ion sputter source of the tandem. Examples of 7Be beam applications are given. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

In this work, we report on a novel approach for measuring the dose absorbed by the EBT3 Gafchromic™ films exposed to 1 MeV electron beam and 250 kV X-rays in the range 0.5-100 Gy. Although EBT3 is specifically designed to obtain best performance for applications where the maximum dose is less than 10 Gy, there are certain clinical applications requiring dose ranges well above this value. In order to cover wider dose ranges, further models characterized by a thinner sensitive layer and/or different chemical composition have been released. Another method exploiting the three-channel flatbed scanner to delay the saturation point of EBT3 has been also reported. The technique proposed here, aimed at extending the sensitivity of the EBT3 film to high doses up to 100 Gy while ensuring a low dose uncertainty, is based on a broadband analysis of the absorption spectrum of the film in response to irradiation. By combining a wavelength-based approach with the monitoring of two characteristic peaks of the EBT3 absorption spectrum, we demonstrated the capability of measuring the dose in the range 0.5-100 Gy with an experimental uncertainty below 4% for doses lower than 5.52 Gy and below 2% for higher dose levels. Finally, through a dynamic fitting procedure integrating the two aforesaid approaches, a total uncertainty lower than 4%, including both the experimental and fitting errors, was achieved in the whole range 0.5-100 Gy. Abstract

Radiochromic film dosimetry has been widely employed in most of the applications of radiation physics for over twenty years. This is due to a number of appealing features of radiochromic films, such as reliability, accuracy, ease of use and cost. However, current radiochromic film reading techniques, based on the use of commercial densitometers and scanners, provide values of dose only after the exposure of the films to radiation. In this work, an innovative methodology for the real-time reading of radiochromic films is proposed for some specific applications. The new methodology is based on opto-electronic instrumentation that makes use of an optical fiber probe for the determination of optical changes of the films induced by radiation and allows measurements of dose with high degree of precision and accuracy. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the dynamic range of some kinds of films, such as the EBT3 Gafchromic films (intensively used in medical physics), can be extended by more than one order of magnitude. Owing to the numerous advantages with respect to the commonly used reading techniques, a National Patent was filed in January 2018.

150. A novel Lab-on-Fiber Radiation Dosimeter for Ultra-high Dose Monitoring.

Abstract

In this work, we report on the first demonstration of Lab on Fiber (LOF) dosimeter for ionizing radiation monitoring at ultra-high doses. The new dosimeter consists in a metallo-dielectric resonator at sub-wavelength scale supporting localized surface plasmon resonances realized on the optical fiber (OF) tip. The resonating structure involves two gold gratings separated by a templated dielectric layer of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Two LOF prototypes have been manufactured and exposed at the IRRAD Proton Facility at CERN in Geneva to 23 GeV protons for a total fluence of 0.67 × 10 16 protons/cm 2 , corresponding to an absorbed dose of 1.8 MGy. Experimental data demonstrated the "radiation resistance" feature of the LOF devices and a clear dependence of the reflected spectrum versus the total dose, expressed by a cumulative blue-shift of ~1.4 nm of the resonance combined with a slight increase of 0.16 dBm in the reflected spectrum. The numerical analysis carried out to correlate the experimental results with the dimensional and physical properties of the resonator, expected to be tightly connected to the absorbed dose, suggests that the main phenomenon induced by exposure to proton beam and able to explain the measured spectral behavior is the reduction of the PMMA thickness, which is also consistent with past literature in the field. Preliminary results demonstrated the potentiality of the proposed platform as dosimeter at MGy dose levels for high energy physics experiments.
