Starting from the evidence provided by the small town of Cagli (PU), a former statio on the Via Flaminia, this paper suggests that the ‘crisis’ of the 3 rd century was an important factor in changing the landscape of Italy in Late Antiquity. Different opinions, focussing on ‘continuity’ instead of ‘crisis’, do not take into account the centrality of Italy when evaluating the Roman Imperial world.

Abstract

Background and aim: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the degree of glycaemic control and the frequency of diabetic complications in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). Methods and results: Questionnaires investigating the organisation of diabetes care centres, individuals’ clinical and metabolic features and pump technology and its management were sent to adult and paediatric diabetes centres that use CSII for treatment in Italy. Information on standard clinical variables, demographic data and acute and chronic diabetic complications was derived from local clinical management systems. The sample consisted of 6623 people with diabetes, which was obtained from 93 centres. Of them, 98.8% had type 1 diabetes mellitus, 57.2% were female, 64% used a conventional insulin pump and 36% used a sensor-augmented insulin pump. The median glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level was 60 mmol/mol (7.6%). The HbA1c target (i.e. 18 years) was achieved in 43.4% of paediatric and 23% of adult participants. Factors such as advanced pump functions, higher rate of sensor use, pregnancy in the year before the study and longer duration of diabetes were associated with lower HbA1c levels. The most common chronic complications occurring in diabetes were retinopathy, microalbuminuria and hypertension. In the year before the study, 5% of participants reported ≥1 episode of severe hypoglycaemic (SH) episodes (SH) and 2.6% reported ≥1 episode of ketoacidosis. Conclusions: Advanced personal skills and use of sensor-based pump are associated with better metabolic control outcomes in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with CSII. The reduction in SH episodes confirms the positive effect of CSII on hypoglycaemia. Clinical trial registration number: NCT 02620917 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

Abstract

The Agrigento: insula III Project began in 2016 thanks to an agreement between the Parco Archeologico e Paesaggistico Valle dei Templi di Agrigento and DiSCi - Bologna University; it aims to document an entire sector of the Hellenistic-Roman quarter, in a three-year period. The main goal is to start a systematic study of private housing from the Archaic period to Late Antiquity and, at the same time, provide a critical understanding of the town planning scheme in this part of the town, which still lacks a modern archaeological and topographical documentation. The interpretation of the previous documentation is the starting point, along with new mapping with laser scanning and a systematic campaign of geophysical investigations to obtain a BIM. As the Bologna University tradition teaches, modern technologies can answer precise historical and archaeological questions: what are the primary phases of the town map? Which one is the starting module of each lot and what are the changes in different ages? Is it possible to reconstruct the original architecture of Hellenistic houses? What is the relationship between this quarter and the rest of the town? The integration of traditional investigational techniques with more recent ones is the methodological assumption of the project, in order to solve the analysis of the complex stratigraphy of the setting, which was inhabited for at least a millennium, from the Archaic to the Middle Ages.

Abstract

Sena Gallica (Senigallia), in the northern Marche region, was the first Roman colony on the Adriatic coast founded at the beginning of the third century BC. This research adopted an integrated approach to different information sources that combines old and new data, archaeological excavations, topographic and geophysical surveys, and geological and geomorphological analyses. The data are managed within a GIS and supported by 3D modelling. One of the results of this work is a map which represents the geomorphological setting of the Roman colony, close to the mouth of the Misa river. The settlement exploited the top-surface of the uppermost Pleistocene–early Holocene coastal fan of the Misa river, now only preserved at the apex sector truncated seaward by wave erosion. The top-surface of the fan apex, in turn, was partly re-incised by stream erosion producing a series of slight topographic mounds, which were selected for the earliest human settlement (V-IV c. BC). Some of the mounds resulted in a protected, slightly elevated, area enclosed by the meandering course of the Misa River and the Sant'Angelo/Penna streams, where the Romans decided to found their colony (284 BC). The tight interaction between human activities and the natural environment has always influenced the development of the town, from the earliest phases to the modern age. This map focuses on the time when the Roman colony was founded, but the combined study in progress allows understanding of the main transformations that occurred during the following centuries.

Alcune murature, infatti, sono state ricostruite con una tecnica antica e poi sottoposte a prove di rottura, per valutarne al meglio caratteristiche e tenuta.

Abstract

Il contributo rende di pubblico dominio i risultati di un nuovo progetto di ricerca dovuto alla collaborazione tra Università di Bologna e Parco Archeologico "Valle dei Templi" di Agrigento. Le nuove ricerche si sono concentrate nell'Insula III del cd. Quartiere ellenistico-romano, un settore di abitazioni private all'interno del quale sono state eseguite dapprima indagini non invasive (2016) e poi analisi stratigrafiche (2017). The so-called Ellenistic-Roman District of Agrigento is the widest area of the known ancient household. Its investigation began in the second half of the 19th century and continues untill today. The excavations have brought to light in an area of approx. 2 acres, part of 4 Insulae concerning the urban system. It is lo- cated in a central position, near the pubblic and religious areas: the forum/agora and the theater. Starting in 2016, the Uni- versity of Bologna, in collaboration with the Valle dei Templi Archaeological and Landscape Park of Agrigento, has under- taken a research project on the so-called 3rd Insula: during the first year the previous documentation, plans and drawings were recovered, as well as objects from the excavations of the 1950s, finally organized and that is being cataloged. At the same time, a new survey was carried out using modern technologies and a systematic campaign of non-invasive investiga- tions. During the second year, has been agreed a comprehensive program of investigative surveys, to answer some ques- tions about urban planning, mainly related to the structure of housing and chronology of the different levels of settlement. The recovered data, even if still under study, represent something new about the lifestyle in Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antiquity: the evidences found, in fact, demonstrate without a doubt that this sector of the city was established starting from the first half of the 6th century BCE and that the permanent occupation lasted at least until the 5th century CE with a prolonged presence that, in different forms, continues at least until the 8th century CE.

Abstract

Patients with psychiatric disorders will provide the basis of their pathology dysfunction of organic, physiological, neurochemical, and that generally require a drug therapy which lasts for long periods of time and in most cases is never abandoned constitute the foundation essential to their daily life. In the psychiatric promote a higher degree of adherence to treatment, even with the use of new psychotropic drugs continues to be one of the most important clinical problems, especially in long-term treatment of severe psychiatric patients. The non compliance to treatment is reflected in both the clinical and social terms. The program is implemented are given information about the nature, development and the signs of mental disorder, was given the right importance to the ability to identify and communicate to staff the facility housing the possible side-effects resulting from drugs and have informed the visitors to promptly recognize signs prodromes characteristic of a state of decompensation.
