BackgroundMajor Depressive Disorder (MDD) is commonly accompanied by cognitive control dysfunction that may persist after remission of clinical symptoms with antidepressant medication treatment. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is an effective treatment alternative for medication-resistant MDD. In this study, we investigated whether rTMS treatment had a beneficial effect not only on depressive symptoms, but on also cognitive control dysfunction.Methods77 subjects with MDD received a 30-session treatment course of 10 Hz rTMS administered at the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Treatment efficacy was assessed using the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Rated (IDS-SR) before and after treatment, with clinical response defined as 50% or greater decrease in the IDS-SR score at treatment 30. Cognitive control function was assessed before and after treatment using the Stroop word-color interference task. We examined changes in Stroop accuracy and reaction time for congruent and incongruent trials, as well as in relation to changes in depressive symptoms.ResultsPerformance accuracy improved particularly for the rTMS responders in the incongruent condition, with older subjects benefitting most from the rTMS treatment. Improvement in reaction times was positively associated with clinical improvement, especially in the incongruent condition.LimitationsWe used a single cognitive task in a naturalistic setting without control for individual rTMS treatment parameters or concomitant medication.ConclusionsOverall, these results indicate that rTMS treatment for MDD has beneficial effects on psychomotor speed and cognitive control. Future studies should extend these findings to larger patient populations and other cognitive domains.

Las crisis humanitarias pueden presentarse en sitios afectados por amenazas químicas, físicas, biológicas y sociales, sobre todo cuando estas amenazas interaccionan entre sí y causan una sindemia. A fin de evitar las crisis, en estos sitios se hace necesario introducir medidas de mitigación que hemos enmarcado bajo el término de “escenarios humanitarios”. Debido a su naturaleza, la implementación de dichas acciones de intervención requiere de la conformación de grupos operativos multidisciplinarios y de una estrategia de trabajo que permita integrarlos con la comunidad afectada. En el caso de la población infantil, el grupo operativo recibió el nombre de unidad de riesgos infantiles en sitios contaminados (RISC), es decir, en localidades impactadas por amenazas químicas, físicas o biológicas. La estrategia consta de las siguientes seis fases: i) planificación para el estudio y la visita al sitio; ii) participación de la comunidad para identificar amenazas, vulnerabilidades y rutas de exposición (el camino que deben seguir los contaminantes desde su fuente hasta la población receptora), así como para el trabajo conjunto en las siguientes fases; iii) priorización de riesgos identificados mediante el monitoreo ambiental y uso de biomarcadores de exposición y efectos; iv) prevención de riesgos a través de la creación de diversas capacidades y alternativas para la prevención ante amenazas sindémicas (CAPAS); v) promoción para implementar las CAPAS mediante la comunicación de riesgos y la capacitación local; y vi) protección con medidas que incluyen propuestas de telesalud, progreso social e innovación para mejorar la cobertura sanitaria. La estrategia ha sido aplicada en diferentes contextos, en algunos de los cuales, ha sido enriquecida con el análisis del respeto de los derechos humanos.

Este ensayo pretende reflexionar sobre los efectos negativos que ha dejado el neoliberalismo y la búsqueda de la modernidad en la educación latinoamericana y, a su vez, señalar cómo los movimientos sociales han influido para contrarrestar los efectos depredadores del capitalismo, al adherirse a una pedagogía crítica ligada a una educación del pueblo, con especial atención en la educación zapatista que, en su lucha por una sociedad justa, democrática y libre, diseñó un sistema educativo derivado de la pedagogía crítica como alternativa al dominio de una educación neoliberal.

Although Ti-based implants exhibit excellent osteoconductive performance under healthy conditions, the effectiveness and successful clinical achievements are negatively altered in diabetic patients. Concernedly, diabetes mellitus (DM) contributes to osteoblastic dysfunctionality, altering efficient osseointegration. This work investigates the beneficial osteogenic activity conducted by nanostructured TiO2 under detrimental microenvironment conditions, simulated by human diabetic serum.Methods: We evaluated the bone-forming functional properties of osteoblasts on synthesized TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) by anodization and Ti6Al4V non-modified alloy surfaces under detrimental diabetic conditions. To simulate the detrimental environment, MC3T3E-1 preosteoblasts were cultured under human diabetic serum (DS) of two diagnosed and metabolically controlled patients. Normal human serum (HS) was used to mimic health conditions and fetal bovine serum (FBS) as the control culture environment. We characterized the matrix mineralization under the detrimental conditions on the control alloy and the NTs. Moreover, we applied immunofluorescence of osteoblasts differentiation markers on the NTs to understand the bone-expression stimulated by the biochemical medium conditions.Results: The diabetic conditions depressed the initial osteoblast growth ability, as evidenced by altered early cell adhesion and reduced proliferation. Nonetheless, after three days, the diabetic damage was suppressed by the NTs, enhancing the osteoblast activity. Therefore, the osteogenic markers of bone formation and the differentiation of osteoblasts were reactivated by the nanoconfigured surfaces. Far more importantly, collagen secretion and bone-matrix mineralization were stimulated and conducted to levels similar to those of the control of FBS conditions, in comparison to the control alloy, which was not able to reach similar levels of bone functionality than the NTs.Conclusion: Our study brings knowledge for the potential application of nanostructured biomaterials to work as an integrative platform under the detrimental metabolic status present in diabetic conditions.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: osteoblast regeneration, bone surface interactions, cellular nanomodulation

Introducción: Actualmente la obesidad se ha convertido en un problema de salud pública emergente y complejo, cuyo mecanismo es etiopatogénico y multifactorial. Ha sido estudiada desde el enfoque biomolecular, genético y mediante intervenciones para mejorar los estilos de vida; sin embargo, no se han incluido estudios que relacionen la autoeficacia y resiliencia en este problema.Objetivo: Evaluar la relación de autoeficacia para el control de peso con la resiliencia, en mujeres mexicanas.Metodología: Estudio correlacional transversal, en 174 mujeres, con o sin obesidad, inscritas en un centro de capacitación para el trabajo en Puebla y San Luis Potosí, México, se empleó muestreo no probabilistico. Se aplicó el instrumento validado en población mexicana: Inventario de Autoeficacia para el control de peso y Escala de Resiliencia Mexicana; con alfa de Cronbach .945 y .950 respectivamente; estudio realizado con apego a la Ley General de Salud en materia de investigación. El análisis de los resultados fue con estadística descriptiva, pruebas de normalidad y correlación r de Spearman. Resultados: El promedio de edad fue 34.6 ± 14.7, media de IMC 26.4 ± 4.5, 49.7 % y 81.7 % obtuvo niveles de autoeficacia y resiliencia altos respectivamente. La relación fue positiva, tamaño de efecto medio y estadísticamente significativo p=.001,con una varianza explicada del 22.6%.Conclusiones: Las mujeres mexicanas mostraron que a mayor resiliencia mayor autoeficacia para el control de peso. Se sugiere integrar la resiliencia en el manejo de la obesidad, que permita el desarrollo de mecanismos para la adquisición de estilos de vida saludables más sustentables.

This article shows a model for the design of circular isolated footings and the column placed anywhere in the footing under minimum cost criteria. Some designs for obtaining the diameter, effective depth, and steel areas of the footing under biaxial bending assume the maximum and uniform pressure at the bottom of the footing supported on elastic soils. All these works consider the column placed at the center of the footing. Three numerical problems are given (each problem presents four variants) to determine the lowest cost to design the circular footings under biaxial bending. Problem 1: Column without eccentricity. Problem 2: Column with eccentricity in the direction of the X axis of one quarter of the diameter of the footing. Problem 3: Column placed at the end furthest from the center of the footing on the X axis. The results are verified by the balance of moments, one-way shear or shear and two-way shear or punching. The new model shows a saving of 17.92% in the contact area with soil and of 31.15% in cost compared to the model proposed by other authors. In this way, the proposed minimum cost design model for circular footings will be of great help for the design when the column is placed on the center or edge of the footing.

PurposeSubretinal prostheses are a novel technology for restoring useful vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa or age-related macular degeneration. We characterize the surgical implantation technique and functional time window of an acute rabbit eye model for testing of human subretinal prostheses.MethodsRetinal prostheses were implanted subretinally in 26 rabbits using a two-step technique. Fundus imaging, fluorescein fundus angiography, and optical coherence topography (OCT) were conducted postoperatively from days 1 to 21 to monitor prosthesis positioning and retinal anatomic changes.ResultsSuccessful implantation and excellent retina apposition were achieved in 84.6% of the rabbits. OCTs showed the overlying retina at full thickness for the first 2 days after implantation. Histology confirmed intact inner layers of the overlying retina until day 3. Progressive atrophy of the overlying retina was revealed by repeated OCTs; approximately 40% of the retina thickness remained on postoperative days 5 and 6.ConclusionsThe two-step implantation technique works well for the rabbit eye model with human prostheses. Rabbit retina may be used for acute electrophysiologic testing of a retinal prosthesis, but is unsuitable for chronic studies due to the merangiotic retina and its limited time window of validity.Translational relevanceThe improved efficacy in prosthesis surgery using this technique will circumvent the challenges in animal models that provide human-like features critical for the transition into human clinical trials.

Pregnancy is a physiologic state of substantially elevated estrogen biosynthesis that maintains vasodilator production by uterine artery endothelial cells (P-UAECs) and thus uterine perfusion. Estrogen receptors (ER-α and ER-β; ESR1 and ESR2) stimulate nongenomic rapid vasodilatory responses partly through activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Rapid estrogenic responses are initiated by the ∼4% ESRs localized to the plasmalemma of endothelial cells. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) interactions within the caveolae are theorized to influence estrogenic effects mediated by both ESRs. Hypothesis: Both ESR1 and ESR2 display similar spatial partitioning between the plasmalemma and nucleus of UAECs and have similar interactions with Cav-1 at the plasmalemma. Using transmission electron microscopy, we observed numerous caveolae structures in UAECs, while immunogold labeling and subcellular fractionations identified ESR1 and ESR2 in three subcellular locations: membrane, cytosol, and nucleus. Bioinformatics approaches to analyze ESR1 and ESR2 transmembrane domains identified no regions that facilitate ESR interaction with plasmalemma. However, sucrose density centrifugation and Cav-1 immunoisolation columns uniquely demonstrated very high protein-protein association only between ESR1, but not ESR2, with Cav-1. These data demonstrate (1) both ESRs localize to the plasmalemma, cytosol and nucleus; (2) neither ESR1 nor ESR2 contain a classic region that crosses the plasmalemma to facilitate attachment; and (3) ESR1, but not ESR2, can be detected in the caveolar subcellular domain demonstrating ESR1 is the only ESR bound in close proximity to Cav-1 and eNOS within this microdomain. Lack of protein-protein interaction between Cav-1 and ESR2 demonstrates a novel independent association of these proteins at the plasmalemma.

Abstract The magnonic band structure of two-dimensional chiral magnonic crystals is theoretically investigated. The proposed metamaterial involves a three-dimensional architecture, where a thin ferromagnetic layer is in contact with a two-dimensional periodic array of heavy-metal square islands. When these two materials are in contact, an anti-symmetric exchange coupling known as the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) arises, which generates nonreciprocal spin waves and chiral magnetic order. The Landau–Lifshitz equation and the plane-wave method are employed to study the dynamic magnetic behavior. A systematic variation of geometric parameters, the DMI constant, and the filling fraction allows the examination of spin-wave propagation features, such as the spatial profiles of the dynamic magnetization, the isofrequency contours, and group velocities. In this study, it is found that omnidirectional flat magnonic bands are induced by a sufficiently strong Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction underneath the heavy-metal islands, where the spin excitations are active. The theoretical results were substantiated by micromagnetic simulations. These findings are relevant for envisioning applications associated with spin-wave-based logic devices, where the nonreciprocity and channeling of the spin waves are of fundamental and practical scientific interest.

Tropical sandy beaches provide essential ecosystem services and support many local economies. In recent times, however, there has been a massive infrastructure expansion in popular tourist destinations worldwide. To investigate the shoreline variability at a popular tourist destination in Mexico, we used the novel semi-automatic CoastSat program (1980 to 2020) and the climate dataset ERA5 (wave energy and direction). We also measured the beach cross-shore distance and the foredune height with topographic surveys. The results indicate that the section of real estate seafront infrastructure in the study site presents a considerable shoreline erosion due to the fragmentation between the foredune ridge and the beach berm, based on the in situ transects. Moreover, foredune corridors with cross-shore distances of up to 70 to 90 m and dune heights of 8 m, can be seen in the short unobstructed passages between buildings. In the south section we found the coastline in a much more stable condition because this area has not had coastal infrastructures, as of yet. For the most part, the remote sensing analysis indicates constant erosion since 1990 in the real estate section (mainly seafront hotels) and an overall accretion pattern at the unobstructed beach-dune locations. This study demonstrates the catastrophic consequences of beach fragmentation due to unplanned real estate developments, by combining in situ surveys and a freely available big-data approach (CoastSat).

Abstract Background Opioid anesthetic agents can modulate the impaired immune response in obese patients through mechanisms that involve the expression and release of cytokines. For this reason, anesthetic care for obese patients remains controversial. Therefore, the aim of the study was to compare the effect of opioid-containing anesthesia (OCA) vs opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) using the Cortínez-Sepúlveda model on IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α serum levels before and after surgery in obese patients undergoing bypass surgery. Methods This randomized cross-sectional study conducted among 40 unrelated obese adults was performed in the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara “Dr. Juan I. Menchaca”. Before undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, patients were randomly assigned to two anesthesia groups: OCA (n = 20) or OFA (n = 20). Fentanyl was the opioid used in the OCA group. The Cortínez-Sepúlveda pharmacokinetic model was used to characterize the disposition of intravenous propofol for the target-controlled infusion technique in obese patients. Body mass was determined to the nearest 0.05 kg using a balance scale (Seca 703; Seca, Hamburg, Germany). Blood samples were taken before and immediately after surgery and cytokine concentrations were determined by ELISA. Pain was assessed using a numerical pain rating scale. Adverse effects were collected within the first 24 h after surgery. Results A total of 6 men and 34 women were included (37.9 ± 10.6 years). Pre-surgery IL-6 and TNF-α serum levels were not detected in study subjects. However, IL-1β levels significantly decreased after surgery (49.58 pg/mL (18.50–112.20)-before surgery vs 13 pg/mL (5.43–22)-after surgery, p = 0.019). Objetivo. Analizar la asociación de la concentración de con­taminantes atmosféricos y los indicadores epidemiológicos de Covid-19 en la Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México (ZMVM). Material y métodos. Se diseñó un estudio epidemiológico ecológico. Se utilizaron modelos lineales tipo Poisson para variables de conteo y modelos lineales de efectos aleatorios en variables continuas para cuantificar la asociación entre los contaminantes atmosféricos y los indicadores de Covid-19. Los datos obtenidos fueron del 28 de febrero de 2020 al 30 de junio de 2021. La exposición a contaminantes se estratificó por estaciones climáticas. Resultados. Los contaminantes que tuvieron asociación significativa con indicadores de morbilidad y mortalidad fueron CO, NOX, O3 y PM10. En la estación seca fría el CO y el NOX tuvieron efecto sobre los casos diarios confirmados y las defunciones diarias. Las PM10 se asociaron con efecto en los indicadores de casos diarios confirmados, incidencia diaria, porcentaje de hospitalizados y la tasa de letalidad. Conclusiones. Los resultados sugieren una asociación entre el comportamiento epidemiológico de Covid-19 y la exposición a CO, NOX, O3 y PM10, en la que se encontró un mayor efecto en la estación seca-fría en la ZMVM.

Se presenta el caso de una paciente de 81 años de edad con dolor abdominal con hallazgo de tumoración de la glándula suprarrenal derecha por ecografía, por lo que se solicitó tomografía abdominal contrastada en la que se encontró glándula suprarrenal derecha respetada y en contraste se identificó tumoración dependiente de la vena cava inferior, redondeada, con bordes lobulados, bien definidos, isodensa a tejidos blandos, de aspecto heterogéneo, con leve captación de medio de contraste, manejándose quirúrgicamente con resección completa de dicha tumoración, que al examen histopatológico se reportó como neoplasia mesenquimal maligna fusocelular compatible con leiomiosarcoma grado 2.

This article is a theoretical review that aims to contextualise the educational reality considering the regulatory framework, the school, and teacher training in Chile for inclusion in the subject of physical education and health. This contextualization proposal will allow reflection on the inherent pedagogical task of the physical education teacher in Chile. It is important to point out that international agreements, laws, decrees, and normative pedagogy documents, as well as those of physical education, allow establishing coexistence agreements in the same reality. The acquisition and strengthening of skills, competencies, and capacities by the students at school must be transferred to the activities of daily life, which are expected to be guided by a physical education professional. Beyond establishing the limits of the pedagogical paradigms, reflection is invited, without forgetting the starting point and the adaptations that must be developed to respond to the needs of society. A huge family of luminescent low-dimensional metal halides for optoelectronic applications has emerged recently as a green alternative to the highly toxic lead halide phosphors. To date, studies on the controlled deposition of these materials as films to be integrated into optoelectronic architectures remain scarce. Here, the synthesis and characterization of highly luminescent films of copper halide phosphors with emissions in violet: K2CuCl3, blue: Cs5Cu3Cl6I2, and green: Cs3Cu2Cl5 are reported. The films were obtained by multisource aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) from methanolic solutions at low temperature and under ambient conditions. Photoluminescent quantum yield values obtained for the films deposited on quartz substrates have values of 52% for K2CuCl3, 85% for Cs5Cu3Cl6I2, and 99% for Cs3Cu2Cl5. These values were highly influenced by the substrate since for samples deposited on glass substrates the values are 26.17% for K2CuCl3, 60.47% for Cs5Cu3Cl6I2, and 59.7% for Cs3Cu2Cl5. Different textured morphologies, with valuable applications in light-harvesting, were found for each stoichiometry. Finally, x-ray photo-emitted spectroscopy was employed to demonstrate the existence of only Cu(I) highly emissive species, suggesting that AACVD could be an excellent alternative for metal halide film deposition.

El composteo es una alternativa para aprovechar los desechos y residuos orgánicos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de dos aceleradores biológicos en la reducción del tiempo requerido para la degradación de la materia orgánica y elevar la calidad del producto final (composta). Los aceleradores utilizados fueron BIOCOMPOS de tipo comercial (BR1) y lodos activados provenientes del tratamiento de aguas municipales (BR2); además un ensayo testigo sin acelerador (BR3). Cada tratamiento tuvo sus respectivas réplicas. Los desechos orgánicos fueron picados y mezclados homogéneamente, se depositaron en los bio-reactores piloto diseñados en el Instituto Tecnológico de Boca del Río (ITBOCA), Veracruz, México. Se midió diariamente en cada bio-reactor la temperatura y tiempo de proceso durante un periodo de 28 días; el ensayo BR2 alcanzó una temperatura máxima de 56°C en un tiempo de 16 días, el cual fue el menor tiempo registrado. El BR1 alcanzó una temperatura de 54°C en el mismo tiempo que el BR2; sin embargo, ésta disminuyó rápidamente en comparación con BR2. El análisis químico de las compostas mostró que el tratamiento BR2 presentó los valores siguientes: Humedad 52%, Fósforo 0.78%, Nitrógeno 3.42% y Carbono 32%, con lo que demostró mejor composición que el BR1, en el cualse observó menor cantidad de nitrógeno y mayor porcentaje de humedad. De esta evaluación se sugiere que el tratamiento BR2 es una alternativa para la elaboración de composta de calidad en zonas rurales para sustituir en parte, los fertilizantes químicos.

En el presente estudio se determinaron las concentraciones de cadmio (Cd), plomo (Pb) y cobre (Cu) en el tejido muscular de camarón café Farfantepenaeus aztecus obtenidos de la parte del sur de la laguna de Tamiahua, Veracruz, durante el período de enero-agosto del 2004. Las concentraciones de los metales se midieron con un espectrofotómetro de absorción atómica utilizando horno de grafito. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que las concentraciones de Cd y Pb en el músculo de los camarones estuvieron por debajo de los límites máximos permisibles para la comercialización de crustáceos según la Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM-029-SSA1, 1993) y la Comisión Europea (EC, 2002). Las concentraciones de Cu fueron superiores a las de Pb y Cd; sin embargo, este elemento aún no está legislado y la concentración fue muy similar a las encontradas en otros crustáceos decápodos. Mangrove forests are commonly mapped using spaceborne remote sensing data due to the challenges of field endeavors in such harsh environments. However, these methods usually require a substantial level of manual processing for each image. Hence, conservation practitioners prioritize using cloud computing platforms to obtain accurate canopy classifications of large extensions of mangrove forests. The objective of this study was to analyze the spatial distribution and rate of change (area gain and loss) of the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) and other dominant mangrove species, mainly Avicennia germinans and Laguncularia racemosa, between 2015 and 2020 throughout the northwestern coast of Mexico. Bimonthly data of the Combined Mangrove Recognition Index (CMRI) from all available Sentinel-2 data were processed with the Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform. The results indicated an extension of 42865 ha of red mangrove and 139602 ha of other dominant mangrove species in the Gulf of California and the Pacific northwestern coast of Mexico for 2020. The mangrove extension experienced a notable decline of 1817 ha from 2015 to 2020, largely attributed to the expansion of aquaculture ponds and the destructive effects of hurricanes. Considering the two mangrove classes, the overall classification accuracies were 90% and 92% for the 2015 and 2020 maps, respectively. The advantages of the method compared to supervised classifications and traditional vegetation indices are discussed, as are the disadvantages concerning the spatial resolution and the minimum detection area. Water contamination has become a global concern, and the prevalence of complex substances known as emerging contaminants constitute a risk to human health and the environment. This work focused on an innovative approach of integrating sonolysis and photocatalysis to remove a standard textile dye efficiently. A highly photo-active, bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) nanocatalyst with single particle sizes between 86 and 265 nm was obtained by a novel one-pot combustion method using a deep eutectic solvent as a precursor. The said catalyst was thoroughly characterized and evaluated for photocatalytic and sono-photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Photocatalytic experiments were conducted under visible light irradiation (450–600 nm). Sono-photocatalytic (SPC) experiments were conducted, focusing on the influence of operational parameters (frequency, power, and pH) on the degradation performance. High-frequency values of 578, 866, and 1138 kHz were explored to promote cavitation dynamics and reactive species generation, improving removal efficiency. Results demonstrated that when sonolysis and photocatalysis were performed separately, the degradation efficiency ranged between 85 and 87%. Remarkably, when the combined SPC degradation was carried out, the RhB removal reached about 99.9% after 70 min. It is discussed that this behavior is due to the increased generation of OH• radicals as a product of the cavitation phenomena related to the ultrasound-assisted process. Moreover, it is argued that SPC significantly improves reaction kinetics and mass transfer rates, facilitating catalyst dispersion and contact with the RhB molecules. Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is known to cause paratuberculosis. One notable protein, MAP3773c, plays a critical role in iron metabolism as a transcription factor. This study aims to investigate the binding affinity of MAP3773c to the chromatin of the Ferroportin1 (FPN1) gene in murine macrophage J774 A.1. We conducted a sequence alignment to identify potential interaction sites for MAP3773c. Following this, we used in silico analysis to predict binding interactions, complemented by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) to confirm in vitro binding of MAP3773c. The map3773c gene was cloned into the pcDNA3.1 vector, with subsequent expression analysis carried out via Western blotting and real-time PCR. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (CHiP) assays were performed on transfected macrophages to confirm binding in the native chromatin context. Our in silico and in vitro analysis indicated that MAP3773c interacts with two binding motifs within the FPN1 coding region. The ChiP results provided additional validation, demonstrating the binding of MAP3773c to the FPN1 chromatin through successful amplification of the associated chromatin fragment via PCR.
