In deuterium-filled inertial confinement fusion implosions, the secondary fusion processes D(³He,p)
4 He and D(T,n)4 He occur, as the primary fusion products ³He and T react in flight with thermal deuterons. In implosions with moderate fuel areal density (~5-100 mg/cm²), the secondary D-³He reaction saturates, while the D-T reaction does not, and the combined information from these secondary products is used to constrain both the areal density and either the plasma electron temperature or changes in the composition due to mix of shell material into the fuel. The underlying theory of this technique is developed and applied to three classes of implosions on the National Ignition Facility: direct-drive exploding pushers, indirect-drive 1-shock and 2-shock implosions, and polar direct-drive implosions. In the 1- and 2-shock implosions, the electron temperature is inferred to be 0.65 times and 0.33 times the burn-averaged ion temperature, respectively. Recent experiments at the National Ignition Facility [M. J. Edwards et al., Phys. Plasmas 20, 070501 (2013)] have explored driving high-density carbon ablators with near-vacuum hohlraums, which use a minimal amount of helium gas fill. These hohlraums show improved efficiency relative to conventional gas-filled hohlraums in terms of minimal backscatter, minimal generation of suprathermal electrons, and increased hohlraum-capsule coupling. Given these advantages, near-vacuum hohlraums are a promising choice for pursuing high neutron yield implosions. Long pulse symmetry control, though, remains a challenge, as the hohlraum volume fills with material. Two mitigation methodologies have been explored, dynamic beam phasing and increased case-to-capsule ratio (larger hohlraum size relative to capsule). Unexpectedly, experiments have demonstrated that the inner laser beam propagation is better than predicted by nominal simulations, and an enhanced beam propagation model is required to match measured hot spot symmetry. Ongoing work is focused on developing a physical model which captures this enhanced propagation and on utilizing the enhanced propagation to drive longer laser pulses than originally predicted in order to reach alpha-heating dominated neutron yields. We have developed a model for analysing x-ray Thomson scattering data from high-density, millimetre- scale inhomogeneous plasmas created during ultra-high pressure implosions at the National Ignition Facility in a spherically convergent geometry. The density weighting of the scattered signal and attenuation of the incident and scattered x-rays throughout the target are included using radial profiles of the density, opacity, ionization state, and temperature provided by radiationhydrodynamics simulations. These simulations show that the scattered signal is strongly weighted toward the bulk of the shocked plasma and the Fermi degenerate material near the ablation front. We show that the scattered signal provides a good representation of the temperature of this highly nonuniform bulk plasma and can be determined to an accuracy of ca. 15% using typical data analysis techniques with simple 0D calculations. On the other hand, the mean ionization of the carbon in the bulk is underestimated. We suggest that this discrepancy is due to the convolution of scattering profiles from different regions of the target. Subsequently, we discuss modifications to the current platform to minimise the impact of inhomogeneities, as well as opacity, and also to enable probing of conditions more strongly weighted toward the compressed core. The "High-Foot" platform manipulates the laser pulse-shape coming from the National Ignition Facility laser to create an indirect drive 3-shock implosion that is significantly more robust against instability growth involving the ablator and also modestly reduces implosion convergence ratio. This strategy gives up on theoretical high-gain in an inertial confinement fusion implosion in order to obtain better control of the implosion and bring experimental performance in-line with calculated performance, yet keeps the absolute capsule performance relatively high. In this paper, we will cover the various experimental and theoretical motivations for the high-foot drive as well as cover the experimental results that have come out of the high-foot experimental campaign. Observations of a rapid decrease in thermal temperature as a function of depth of solid targets irradiated with a short pulse, ultrahigh-intensity laser are reported. This phenomenon is investigated using the Titan short pulse laser with intensities greater than 10
20 W/cm2 interacting with buried layer targets. The longitudinal temperature profile is determined by measuring K-shell spectra from a 0.4 μm copper tracer layer placed at various depths (i.e., 0–1.5 μm) within the 2.4 μm thick target. It is observed that the line ratios (He-like K-shell lines) as a function of temperature require a consideration of at least three parameters to analyze the K-shell spectra: hot electron population, time-dependent plasma conditions, and opacity. Here, the study of the effect of these three parameters on measured spectra in the short pulse high intensity laser-matter interactions using the atomic model FLYCHK [H.-K. 17–75 keV one- and two-dimensional high-resolution (<10 μm) radiography has been developed using high-intensity short pulse lasers. High energy Kα sources are created by fluorescence from hot electrons interacting in the target material after irradiation by lasers with intensity I
L >1017 W/cm2 . High-resolution point projection one- and two-dimensional radiography has been achieved using microfoil and microwire targets attached to low-Z substrate materials. The microwire size was 10 μm×10 μm×300 μm on a 300 μm×300 μm×5 μm polystyrene substrate. The radiography experiments were performed using the Titan laser at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The results show that the resolution is dominated by the microwire target size and there is very little degradation from the plasma plume, implying that the high-energy x-ray photons are generated mostly within the microwire volume. There are enough Kα photons created with a 300 J, 1-ω, 40 ps pulse laser from these small volume targets, and that the signal-to-noise ratio is sufficiently high, for single shot radiography experiments. We present the status of optical field ionization soft X-ray lasers. The amplifying medium is generated by focusing a high-energy circularly polarized 30-fs 10-Hz Ti: sapphire laser system in a gaseous medium. Using xenon or krypton, strong laser emission at 41.8 and 32.8 nm, respectively, has been observed. After presenting the basis of the physics, we present recent characterization of the sources as well as dramatic improvement of their performances using the waveguiding technique. Synchrotrons have for decades provided invaluable sources of soft X-rays, the application of which has led to significant progress in many areas of science and technology. But future applications of soft X-rays-in structural biology, for example-anticipate the need for pulses with much shorter duration (femtoseconds) and much higher energy (millijoules) than those delivered by synchrotrons. Soft X-ray free-electron lasers should fulfil these requirements but will be limited in number; the pressure on beamtime is therefore likely to be considerable. Laser-driven soft X-ray sources offer a comparatively inexpensive and widely available alternative, but have encountered practical bottlenecks in the quest for high intensities. Here we establish and characterize a soft X-ray laser chain that shows how these bottlenecks can in principle be overcome. By combining the high optical quality available from high-harmonic laser sources (as a seed beam) with a highly energetic soft X-ray laser plasma amplifier, we produce a tabletop soft X-ray femtosecond laser operating at 10?Hz and exhibiting full saturation, high energy, high coherence and full polarization. - Abstract
During the last ten years, the ability of high power lasers to generate high energy density shocks has made them a reliable tool to study extreme states of matter. These states of matter are relevant in many important physics areas such as astrophysics, planetology and ICF physics. Here, we present some representative studies performed by using a driven laser shock: melting of iron at pressures relevant for geophysics, developments of new techniques to measure the density of highly compressed matter and a study of a radiative shock.

International audience; High harmonic amplification is shown in an optical-field ionized X-ray laser. The 4d-4p X-ray line of Kr8+ at 32.8 nm, which has a close match to the 25th harmonic of the infrared laser, was amplified up to 200 times. The energy-extraction regime was also achieved, which depended on the level of seeding. This second-generation X-ray laser is fully polarized, has low divergence and shows a high degree of coherence. The duration is also expected to be short, fulfilling the requirements for an ultra-intense tabletop X-ray laser. Conditions for higher energy output are also suggested.

Cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) can significantly affect the energy coupling and symmetry of direct-drive implosions. We report on a series of direct-drive shots with 2.1 mm outer diameter capsules conducted on NIF for diagnostic development and calibration in which the wavelength separation (Δ λ) between the inner and outer cone beams was varied. We observe a strong improvement in performance as Δ λ is applied, with the nuclear yield increasing by up to a factor of 4 ×. Other data including the nuclear bang time and implosion symmetry suggest that increasing Δ λ suppresses CBET and improves both the energy coupling and drive symmetry. These results provide a strong and important benchmark for CBET models applicable to direct-drive ignition designs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The increased use of marginal donors highlights the importance of organ quality in transplantation and the identification of prognostic biomarkers. This experimental study investigated modulation of the hypoxia-inducible factor ( HIF) 1α pathway in kidney grafts in relation to different degrees of ischaemia. Methods In a porcine autotransplantation model, two different kidney graft protocols were compared: standard 24-h cold storage ( CS) and 24-h CS preceded by 1 h warm ischaemia ( WI + CS). The renal HIF-1α pathway and tubular dedifferentiation were analysed in the early phase of reperfusion and at 3 months. Results There was a relationship between the degree of ischaemic injury and the outcome of the kidney graft. During the first week of reperfusion, WI + CS grafts showed a higher degree of injury. The observed tubular dedifferentiation was associated with delayed HIF-1α expression, and with loss of its role in transcription. In highly injured kidneys, deregulation of the HIF-1α pathway was also observed in the chronic phase, with reduced production of vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF) A, and upregulation of VEGF receptor 1 (Flt-1) and thrombospondin 1. In addition, these kidneys displayed altered kidney histology and decreased function. Conclusion The HIF-1α pathway appears to be abolished early in response to severe ischaemia. A high degree of ischaemic injury also results in chronic activation of the HIF-1α pathway, diverting it away from the beneficial activation of angiogenesis. Further studies on the finely tuned balance of signals in this pathway may provide diagnostic biomarkers that can determine organ quality during kidney transplantation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
