104. Prediction of metabolic syndrome with impaired glucose tolerance in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cohort study.

Abstract

Objective To investigate the predictive role of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). Methods This study was a retrospective cohort study. A total of 1 989 participants who underwent medical examination in PLA Rocket Force Characteristic Medical Center from June 2012 to September 2019 were enrolled. The participants were equal or more than 40 years old and without previous T2DM. The general information, physical examination data, and laboratory indexes were analyzed, and the occurrence of T2DM was followed up as the research outcome. According to occurrence of T2DM, the subjects were divided into T2DM group and non-T2DM group. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to assess the risk of T2DM in people with MS and (or) IGT, and the population attribution score (PAF) was calculated to express the proportion of T2DM attributed to MS and IGT. Results The average follow-up time of the study was 5.1 years. During the follow-up period, a total of 291 people (14.6%) were diagnosed with T2DM. Compared with those without T2DM, individuals with T2DM were older and had higher waist circumference, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and oral glucose tolerance test 2-hours plasma glucose (P<0.01). Participants with a family history of diabetes and a history of smoking were more likely to develop T2DM (P<0.05). After adjusting for baseline age, gender, smoking, drinking, exercise, and family history of diabetes, participants with MC at baseline had a higher risk of developing T2DM (HR=2.84, 95%CI 1.20-6.69) and PAF (PAF=18.70%, 95%CI 11.82%-25.60%) than participants with non-MC. The risk of T2DM with IGT (HR=3.17, 95%CI 1.88-5.34) and PAF (PAF=21.63%, 95%CI 10.07%-35.53%) were higher than those with non-IGT. Participants with non-MC and IGT (PAF=11.50%, 95%CI 10.71%-19.83%) was more related to the incidence of T2DM than participants with MC and normal glucose tolerance (PAF=0.69%, 95%CI -5.75%-11.47%). Patients with MC who have IGT among the metabolic components have the highest risk of T2DM (HR=4.39, 95%CI 2.40-8.04) and the highest PAF (PAF=21.87%, 95%CI 10.63%-37.34%). Abstract

In this paper, a pre-anodized carbon paste electrode (PACPE) is fabricated by a simple electrochemical pretreatment method, which can be used for the simultaneous determination of uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). The influencing mechanism of the acidity on the size of oxidation peak current (ip,a) of UA and AA is discussed in detail. According to the results, in different pH conditions, the intensity of hydrogen bonding between UA, AA and the surface of PACPE, the degree of reduction reaction at the auxiliary electrode, and the structural configurations of UA and AA with different species in reaction system have evident influence on the size of oxidation peak current. In pH 7.00 phosphate buffer solution, the calibration curves for UA and AA are obtained in the range of 5.0 x 10-7–5.0 x 10-5 mol/L and 3.0 x 10-5–5.0 x 10-3 mol/L, respectively. The detection limits for UA and AA are found to be 2.0 x 10-8 mol/L and 1.2 x 10-6 mol/L, respectively. This proposed method has been successfully applied to determine UA and AA in human urine simultaneously with satisfactory results.

This book explores the changes to native senses of place, the conception of border - simultaneously as limitations and opportunities - and what the authors call "affective boundaries," "livelihood reconstruction," and "trans-Himalayan modernities." Abstract

Objects: To examine how vascular endothelia (VE)-cadherin plasma levels are correlated with parameters associated with endothelial function such as endothelin-1, nitric oxide, nitric oxide synthase and HbA1c in type 2 diabetic patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: VE-cadherin levels were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Spearman’s correlation and multiple stepwise regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between plasma VE-cadherin and other factors. Results: By univariate correlation analysis, plasma VE-cadherin levels were significantly associated with age, total cholesterol, triglyceride, hemoglobin A1c, and endothelin-1. Multiple regression analysis (adjusted for age, total cholesterol, and triglyceride) showed that plasma VE-cadherin levels were independently and significantly associated with HbA1c and ET-1. Plasma VE-cadherin levels were significantly highest in patients with diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease. While patients with diabetes mellitus had higher levels of VE-cadherin compared with healthy subjects. Conclusions: This study found that VE-cadherin levels might be a biomarker for some endothelial dysfunction associated with coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

De’ang 德昂people are an ethnic minority officially-recognized in China who are tea planters and tea drinkers mainly living in the upland areas of southwest Yunnan on the border between China and Myanmar. This paper demonstrates that how De’ang use tea as a gift in gift giving with outsiders and insiders to produce their social relationships in their lives, and from the viewpoint of anthropology argues that tea giving among the De’ang not only can reflect the basic principle of reciprocity in gift exchange, but also can reveal their identity both inside and outside their own community through different social relationships.

Abstract

This prospective, multicentre, phase III study (NCT02104804) evaluated the efficacy and safety of saxagliptin add‐on therapy in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by insulin ± metformin. Patients with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) 7.5% to 10.5% and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) <15 mmol/L (270 mg/dL) on stable insulin therapy (20‐150 U/d) were randomized (1:1) to saxagliptin 5 mg once daily (N = 232) or placebo (N = 230) for 24 weeks, stratified by metformin use. The primary efficacy measure was change in HbA1c. Saxagliptin treatment resulted in a greater adjusted mean change in HbA1c from baseline to week 24 than placebo (−0.58%; P < .001), irrespective of metformin use, and a greater mean change in FPG (0.9 mmol/L [−15.9 mg/dL]; P < .001). More patients achieved HbA1c <7% with saxagliptin (11.4%) than with placebo (3.5%, P = .002). Adverse events and incidence of hypoglycaemia were similar in both groups. Overall, add‐on saxagliptin 5 mg once daily significantly improved glycaemic control without increasing hypoglycaemia risk and was well tolerated in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by insulin (± metformin). 129. Enhancing the High-Temperature and High-Rate Properties of Nickel Hydroxide Electrode for Nickel-Based Secondary Batteries by Using Nanoscale Ca(OH)2 and ?-CoOOH

Abstract

Nanoscale Ca(OH)2 particles as a novel cathode additive for nickel-based secondary batteries are synthesized by a homogeneous precipitation method. The influence of Ca(OH)2 additive on the electrochemical performance of two types of nickel electrode (using spherical Ni(OH)2 and g-CoOOH@Ni(OH)2) were evaluated. It is interestingly discovered that nano-Ca(OH)2 additives can efficiently improve the charge acceptance of both nickel electrodes. Especially, the charge acceptance of the 1.0 wt% nano-Ca(OH)2@g-CoOOH@Ni(OH)2 electrode at 70degC at 5C is over 90% and the discharge capacity can reach about 218 mAh g[?]1. These performance enhancements of nickel electrode mainly result from the combined coating with Ca(OH)2 and g-CoOOH. The modification of oxygen evolution reaction on the nickel electrode is primarily resulting from the use of Ca(OH)2 by increasing its potential and suppressing its rate. The observably lower charge transfer resistance of nickel electrode is mainly due to the high conductivity coating of g-CoOOH. Consequently, the proposed cathode additive is promising for the high-temperature property enhancement of nickel-based rechargeable batteries.

149. Research strategies in click chemistry: Measuring its cognitive contents and knowledge flow

Abstract

The issue about how outstanding scientists obtained innovative findings has drawn the interest of researchers in science, policy and scientometrics. Here, we attempt to address this question by using computational methods to measure the cognitive content and concepts of K. Barry Sharpless’ research and estimate the knowledge flow of his click chemistry to other fields. First, we traced Sharpless' conceptual journey over time through topic modeling approach, mapping and clustering of the epistemic network from distant reading his publications. We find that connectivity and functions, the core features of click chemistry, are embodied in his constant search for simplicity. What makes simplicity possible is his continuous work with collaborators on reactivity and reaction mechanisms. Moreover, citation and link analysis show that click chemistry had a much richer impact on other research fields than what is generally acknowledged, and drew solutions to significant and practical questions back to chemistry from biology. Together with these findings, we propose that the click chemistry philosophy follows the way that values nature's principle. Chemistry has a clear-cut epistemic domain in modeling Nature. Thus, click chemistry as a concept on doing science beyond a connective technology goes across the boundaries between disciplines and impacts many other fields.
