102. Atom Interferometers: Beyond Complementarity Principles

Abstract

Complementarity lies at the heart of conceptual foundation of orthodox quantum mechanics. The wave-particle duality makes it impossible to tell which slit each particle passes through and still observe an interference pattern in a Young's double-slit experiment. In this paper, this duality is appraised under the standard formulation of quantum mechanics for atom interferometers. It is found that the internal freedoms like electronic states of an atom can be used to detect the which-path information of each atom while uphold the interference pattern of atoms when the center-of-mass motion of atoms is detected., Comment: 4 pages in revtex format, no figures

103. Local Realistic Model for Two-Particle Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Pairs

Abstract

A local realistic model for quantum mechanics of two-particle Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pairs is proposed. In this model, it is the strict obedience of conservation laws in each event at the quantum level that uphold the perfect correlation of two spatially-separated particles, instead of nonlocality in the orthodox formulation of quantum mechanics. Therefore, one can conclude that all components of the spin of two particles, and the position and momentum of a particle can be measured simultaneously. The proposed model yields the same statistical prediction on an ensemble of individual particles as the orthodox formulation does. This suggests that the wave function is not a complete description of individual particle as assumed in the orthodox formulation, but only a statistical description of an ensemble of particles., Comment: 4 pages, prepared in REVTEX format; 1 postscript figure

108. Focal mechanics and disaster characteristics of the 2024 M7.6 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, Japan

Abstract

On January 1, 2024, a devastating M7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, resulting in significant casualties and property damage. Utilizing information from the first six days after the earthquake, this article analyzes the seismic source characteristics, disaster situation, and emergency response of this earthquake. The results show: 1) The earthquake rupture was of the thrust type, with aftershock distribution showing a north-east-oriented belt-like feature of 150 km. 2) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), observations detected significant westward to north-westward co-seismic displacement near the epicenter, with the maximum horizontal displacement reaching 1.2 m and the vertical uplift displacement reaching 4 m. A two-segment fault inversion model fits the observational data well. 3) Near the epicenter, large Peak Ground Velocity (PGV) and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) were observed, with the maxima reaching 145 cm/s and 2681 gal, respectively, and the intensity reached the highest level 7 on the Japanese (Japan Meteorological Agency, JMA) intensity standard, which is higher than level 10 of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) standard. 4) The observation of the very rare multiple strong pulse-like ground motion (PLGM) waveform poses a topic worthy of research in the field of earthquake engineering. 5) As of January 7, the earthquake had left 128 deaths and 560 injuries in Ishikawa Prefecture, with 1305 buildings completely or partially destroyed, and had triggered a chain of disasters including tsunamis, fires, slope failures, and road damage. Finally, this paper summarizes the emergency rescue, information dissemination, and other disaster response and management measures taken in response to this earthquake. This work provides a reference case for carrying out effective responses, and offers lessons for handling similar events in the future.

Abstract

We establish an effective and efficient theoretical approach called the spatial–temporal broadband nonlinear coupled wave theory (ST-BNCWT) to evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution behaviors of femtosecond laser pulse second harmonic generation (SHG) in a nonlinear medium. In this method, all the frequency components comprising the fundamental-wave laser pulse participate in a series of complicated three-wave mixing nonlinear coupling, including sum-frequency generation, difference-frequency generation, and the usual SHG, to create a second harmonic wave pulse. The contribution from each three-wave mixing process is strongly influenced by the corresponding phase matching or mismatching. We have used this method to analyze systematical transmission evolution characteristics of ultrashort laser pulses in a β-barium borate crystal and disclose the variation of a number of critical physical quantities. Our ST-BNCWT methodology can greatly facilitate the deep understanding of the SHG and various pulse transmission characteristics of ultrashort laser pulses and provide great support and guidance for experimental prediction. Moreover, our scheme opens up a promising path to explore and visualize novel nonlinear optical interactions in solid-state materials spanning the spatial and temporal domain, which are very helpful for building versatile ultrafast lasers in various spectral windows via powerful nonlinear frequency conversion technology against a basic high-performance ultrafast laser such as a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. 135. miR-373 Suppresses Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis via Regulation of SIRT1/PGC-1α/NRF2 Axis in Pancreatic Cancer

Abstract

Objective: Our study aimed to investigate function and mechanism of miR-373 in proliferation and apoptosis of pancreatic cancer (PC) cells by regulating NAD+-dependent histone deacetylase sirtulin 1 (SIRT1). Materials and Methods: This experimental study included two PC cell lines AsPC-1 and PANC-1 in which expression levels of miR-373 and SIRT1 were manipulated. The level of miR-373 was detected by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) method. Expression levels of SIRT1, BCL-2, BAX, cleaved CASPASE-8/9/3, PARP, PGC-1α, NRF2, eNOS and iNOS were examined via RT-qPCR and western blotting, respectively. The binding sites of miR-373 on the SIRT1 were examined via dual-luciferase assay. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were examined by MTT assay, colony formation assay, Annexin-V/PI staining and TUNEL assay. The oxidative metabolic changes were monitored by reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) detection. Results: miR-373 could specifically target the 3’-UTR of SIRT1 and reduce its expression in PC cells. Either elevated expression of miR-373 or partial loss of SIRT1 inhibited cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis. Accumulation of BAX and cleaved CASPASE-8/9/3, inhibition of PGC-1α/NRF2 pathway, increase oxidative stress and reduction of BCL-2 as well as uncleaved PARP were found in the presence of miR-373 or the absence of SIRT1. Overexpression of SIRT1 could reduce anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects of miR-373. Conclusion: Overall, this study concluded that miR-373-dependent SIRT1 inhibition displays anti-proliferative and proapoptotic roles in PC cells via PGC-1α/NRF2 pathway, which highlights miR-373 as a potential target for PC treatment.

Abstract

With the increasing economic development and gradual opening of China’s aviation market, the Chinese aviation industry is experiencing rapid growth and is facing some problems at the same time. Many scholars have assessed the profitability of the Chinese aviation industry using a single assessment approach. Both theory and methods in assessing the profitability of the airlines need to be developed and improved. This article presents a new integrated approach – a combination of factor analysis, principal component analysis, and gray relational analysis. Based on the theory of decision making and data mining, this more reasonable and effective model overcomes the one-sidedness and limitations of the individual methods and has significant impact in theory and practice.
