However, poor biocompatibility can elicit capsule formation, usually resulting in prosthesis contracture and displacement in long-term usage. To overcome this problem, this study investigated the properties of silicone rubber materials with or without a microgroove-patterned surface and with or without carbon (C)-ion implantation. Materials and methods: Atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and a water contact angle test were used to characterize surface morphology and physicochemical properties. Cytocompatibility was investigated by a cell adhesion experiment, immunofluorescence staining, a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, and scanning electron microscopy in vitro. Histocompatibility was evaluated by studying the inflammatory response and fiber capsule formation that developed after subcutaneous implantation in rats for 7days, 15days, and 30days in vivo. Results: Parallel microgrooves were found on the surfaces of patterned silicone rubber (P-SR) and patterned C-ion-implanted silicone rubber (PC-SR). Irregular larger peaks and deeper valleys were present on the surface of silicone rubber implanted with C ions (C-SR). The silicone rubber surfaces with microgroove patterns had stable physical and chemical properties and exhibited moderate hydrophobicity. PC-SR exhibited moderately increased dermal fibroblast cell adhesion and growth, and its surface microstructure promoted orderly cell growth. Histocompatibility experiments on animals showed that both the anti-inflammatory and antifibrosis properties of PC-SR were slightly better than those of the other materials, and there was also a lower capsular contracture rate and less collagen deposition around implants made from PC-SR. Conclusion: Although the surface chemical properties, dermal fibroblast cell growth, and cell adhesion were not changed by microgroove pattern modification, a more orderly cell arrangement was obtained, leading to enhanced biocompatibility and reduced capsule formation. Thus, this approach to the modification of silicone rubber, in combination with C-ion implantation, should be considered for further investigation and application. The Am(III) adsorption isotherms on natural hematite, on a red earth and on three kinds of treated red earth samples were determined and compared. The treatment was performed to remove iron oxides, organic matter (OM) and both. The batch technique and aqueous Am(III) solutions with molarities less than 3 . 10-9 mol/l were used. A very high adsorbability of Am(III) on hematite was found, and in order to decrease the adsorption percentage, stable Eu3+ as a hold back carrier was added to the aqueous solution. All the isotherms were found to be linear. The strong effects of pH, ionic strength and fulvic acid (FA) on the Am(III) adsorption on natural hematite were demonstrated. A positive contribution of OM and an unexpectedly high negative influence of iron oxides on the Am(III) adsorption by the untreated red earth were found too. The average distribution coefficients of Am(III) adsorption on natural hematite, on red earth and on three kinds of treated red earth samples were determined, respectively, from these linear isotherms. The very high adsorbability of Am(III) on hematite and the very strong negative influence of iron oxides on the Am(III) adsorption on untreated red earth were distinctly demonstrated as well. It appears that the adsorbability of composed natural materials cannot be predicted from the adsorbabilities of each of the mineral components alone, due to possible interactions between the mineral components and the different characteristics of the composite.

The adsorption and desorption of Am(III) on a calcareous soil (sierozem) and its parent material (loess) were studied by batch technique. The molarities of the Am(III) aqueous solutions were less than 5 . 10-9 mol/l. High adsorbability was found of Am(III) on the calcareous soil and its parent material. In order to decrease the adsorption and, hence, to investigate the adsorption characteristics properly, stable Eu3+ as hold back carrier and analogue was added to the aqueous solution. The relative contributions of CaCO3, organic matter (OM) to the Am(III) adsorption on calcareous soil and its parent material were investigated. The adsorption and desorption isotherms of Am(III) on untreated soil and loess and the three kinds of treated soils and three kinds of treated loesses to remove CaCO3, OM and both CaCO3 and OM were determined, respectively. It was found that all isotherms were linear, the average distribution coefficients (K-d) for the untreated soil and for the untreated loess were almost equal, while there was an obvious difference between the values of the average distribution coefficients (K-d) for the treated soil and the treated loess to remove CaCO3 or OM. The adsorption-desorption hysteresis on the untreated and treated soils and loesses actually occurred and there was an obvious difference between the hysteresis coefficients on both the corresponding treated soil and loess. It can be concluded that the adsorbability of Am(III) on calcareous soil is similar to that on its parent material, and that the contributions of CaCO3 and OM to the Am(III) adsorption by the untreated soil are different from those by the untreated parent material.

The effects of ionic strength on the adsorption behaviors of the monovalent cation NpO2+, the divalent cations UO22+, Zn2+, Sr2+, the trivalent cations Yb3+, AM(3+) onto Al2O3, SiO2 and Fe2O3 from aqueous solutions were investigated. It was found that depending on the adsorption system and solution condition, the ionic strength effects are promotive, reductive and insensitive to increasing ionic strength. Based on the comparison among the various effects of ionic strength on the various adsorption systems and the theoretical considerations, it may be concluded that the factors of ionic strength effect on cation adsorption are very complicated, that there are various effects on a certain adsorption system in the different pH ranges and different concentration ranges of background electrolyte, that the speciation of metals in aqueous solutions plays an important role in the cation adsorption, that the coulombic interaction and the chemical reaction could be directed towards the various ionic strength effects and that the satisfactory interpretation of various effects of ionic strength is very difficult to access and that ionic strength effect on cation adsorption is an open question and worthy of further study, because of the great practical importance and theoretical interest. The sorption and desorption isotherms of untreated calcareous soil and three treated soils to remove CaCO3, organic matter (OM) and both CaCO3 and OM were determined and analyzed with the Freundlich equation at pH 7.8, moderate concentrations of NpO2 + (~10-5mol/l), in the presence of 0.01 mol/l CaCl2 and under ambient aerobic conditions. The relative contribution of CaCO3 and OM to the neptunium(V) sorption on calcareous soil and the sorption/desorption hysteresis is discussed. The effects of adding fulvic acid (FA) and carbonate in to the solution on the sorption of neptunium(V) on the soils were also studied. The sorption and desorption characteristics of NpO2 +, Zn2+, Sr2+ and Cs+ on the soils are compared.

Summary The sorption and desorption isotherms and the corresponding distribution coefficients (K d, mL/g) of Np(V) for untreated loess and three kinds of treated loesses were determined by using the batch technique at moderate concentrations (∼10-5mol/L) under ambient aerobic conditions in the presence of 0.01mol/L CaCl2. For the treated loesses, selective extraction methods were used to remove CaCO3 and organic matter (OM) from the loess. The isotherms were analyzed with the Freundlich equation. The relative contributions of OM and CaCO3 to the Np(V) sorption on the loess were investigated from the parameters of the Freundlich equation. The effects of adding fulvic acid (FA) from the loess and the carbonate in solution on the sorption of neptunium(V) on the loess were studied. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) and displacement curves (DPCs) of Np(V) on the untreated loess column and on the treated loess columns were determined under ambient aerobic conditions at moderate concentration (1.1×10-4mol/L) in the presence of 0.01mol/L CaCl2. The results of column experiments are in accord with the results of batch experiments. It was found that (1) Np(V) in the loess under the present experimental conditions was relatively mobile and the distribution coefficients were relatively low at moderate concentrations, (2) the sorption/desorption hysteresis of Np(V) on the loess occurs, (3) the sorption of Np(V) on the loess was mainly determined by the clay minerals, (4) the addition of FA or carbonate in the aqueous solutions had an obvious positive effect on the Np(V) sorption on the loess, (5) the retardation of Np(V) migration in the loess at moderate concentrations was inconsiderable.

The conditional stability constants for tracer concentrations of Tb(III), Yb(II), and Gd(III) with three soil humic acids, three soil fulvic acids and a fulvic acid from weathered coal were determined at pH 9.0-9.1 (these values are similar to those in calcareous soils) in the presence of NaHCO3 by using the anion exchange method. It was found that 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were simultaneously formed in the weakly alkaline conditions. The conditional stability constants of these 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were calculated from the distribution coefficients of rare earth elements at various concentrations of humate or fulvate. The stability constants indicate the very high stability of trivalent Tb3+, Yb3+ and Gd3+ complexes with humic substances in weakly alkaline conditions. The key parameters necessary for the experimental determination of the conditional stability constants of metal ions with humic substances in the presence of NaHCO3 by using an anion exchange method were discussed. The conditional stability constants of these 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were compared in this paper. It was found that stabilities of Tb3+ 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with humic acid are greater than the corresponding ones with fulvic acid from the same soil. In addition, the effect of the presence of Ca2+ as a competitor on the stabilities of 1:1 and 1:2 complexes of Yb was examined and no pronounced change of stabilities of 1:1 complex was found, even though Ca2+ is in a 10(3) excess to Yb3+.

The effects of pH, ionic strength and concentration on the sorption of Th(IV) on alumina and silica were investigated and the sorption isotherms of Th(IV) on alumina and silica at different pH values were determined. It was found for both sorbents that the absorbability of silica is less than that of alumina. The relative sorption rate of silica is similar to that of alumina. The sorption edges are similar to each other, that the insensitivity of sorption to ionic strength is about the same. These similarities between the sorbents suggest that the speciation of Th(IV) in aqueous solutions plays a significant, but subtle role, in controlling the sorption process, because the charges of both sorbents are distinctly different. The mechanism of Th(IV) sorption on alumina is distinctly different from that of the sorptions of Cs+, Eu3+ and Yb3+ on alumina, and similar to that of the sorption of Co(II) on alumina.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of agonistic antibody to angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1-AA) on atherosclerosis in male ApoE-/- mice which were employed to establish the animal models of AT1-AA in two ways. In the first group, mice were injected subcutaneously with conjugated AT1 peptide at multiple sites; in the second group, mice were infused with AT1-AA prepared from rabbits that were treated with AT1 peptide intraperitoneally. Mice in each group were further randomly divided into five subgroups and treated with AT1 peptide/AT1-AA, AT1 peptide/AT1-AA plus valsartan, AT1 peptide/AT1-AA plus fenofibrate, AT1 peptide/ AT1-AA plus pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) and control vehicle, respectively. Antibodies were detected in mice (except for mice in control group). Aortic atherosclerotic lesions were assessed by oil red O staining, while plasma CRP, TNF-α, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and H2O2 were determined by ELISA. CCR2 (the receptor of MCP-1), macrophages, and smooth muscle cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. P47phox, MCP-1 and eNOS were detected by RT-PCR, while P47phox, NF-κB and MCP-1 were detected by Western blot assay. The aortic atherosclerotic lesions were significantly increased in AT1 peptide/AT1-AA treated mice, along with simultaneous increases in inflammatory parameters. However, mice treated with valsartan, fenofibrate or PDTC showed alleviated progression of atherosclerosis and reductions in inflammatory parameters. Thus, AT1-AA may accelerate aortic atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice, which is mediated, at least in part, by the inflammatory reaction involving nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase, reactive oxygen species, and NF-κB. In addition, valsartan, fenofibrate and PDTC may inhibit the AT1-AA induced atherosclerosis.

The Am(III) adsorption from very dilute aqueous solutions on polyethylene was studied as a function of the pH value, the composition of dissolved salts and the presence or absence of adsorbent SiO2. It was found that the Am(III) adsorption on polyethylene is decreased with increasing H+ concentration and dissolved salt concentrations and in the presence of SiO2 as an adsorbent. The mechanisms of Am(III) adsorption on polyethylene were discussed. Based on the observations in this paper, extreme care is necessary to minimize and correct the Am(III) adsorption on the container walls in order to improve the accuracy of Am(III) distribution coefficient (Kd) between a solid and an aqueous solution.

Surface complexation models (SCMs) have been used extensively to describe the acid-base properties and adsorption behaviors of inorganic and organic cations and anions on many single-phase adsorbents. The success of SCMs results from the conformation of adsorption to mass-action and material-balance laws and the flexibility in adjustable parameters. However, the assumptions made in the derivation of the SCMs are really not justified and the SCMs are not so thoroughly grounded in fundamental chemistry. The SCMs are really the data-fitting model, rather than the chemical model. The premises of application of SCMs are the accurate identification of surface species and the low surface coverage. Though the application of the SCMs comes into vogue, the SCMs should be applied with caution. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

Generalization ability is a principal issue in the field of machine learning. Feature selection is a method that can improve generalization ability of learning algorithm. Through measuring feature count measure (FCM) in decision table, select the feature which depended strongly on classification attribute. Based on the above, Feature count measure based bagging ensemble learning algorithm is proposed. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is effective to obtain classification rule.
