• A patient had acquired aganglionosis after Soave's procedure for Hirschsprung's disease. Vascular compromise of the sigmoid pull-through at the time of the operation was the probable cause. Posterior myomectomy of the pull-through segment was curative.(Arch Surg 1982;117:1346-1347)

Most foreign bodies may be extracted from the gastrointestinal tract with flexible fiber-optic endoscopes. Endoscopic overtubes (flexible conduits inserted over the fiberoptic endoscope) permit safe extraction of sharp or pointed objects. We report a technique of foreign body removal for use in infants and small children in whom a standard pediatric gastroscope and overtube is too large.

The fourth edition of Pediatric Surgery lives up to the high standards established by the first three editions. This two-volume text is the most comprehensive work currently published in pediatric surgery. The book was edited by five highly respected, actively practicing pediatric surgeons, with chapter contributions from 149 authors, most of whom are experts in their fields. Almost all the chapters are inclusive monographs. They begin with a historic perspective, go on to cover technical details, and finish with future directions. Thirty-three new chapters have been added, eg, on teratology, prenatal diagnosis, and respiratory support. Some chapters are simple overviews and are too brief to give more than a smattering of knowledge of the field. However, all chapters include extensive references if further background is required. To make room, the book has been streamlined. It was improved by reductions in its previously heavy contributions in cardiac surgery; orthopedics; ophthalmology; neurosurgery;
