109. Patient satisfaction with the cervical ripening balloon as a method for induction of labour: a randomised controlled trial

Abstract

INTRODUCTION Evidence has shown that balloon catheters are as effective as prostaglandins (PGE) in achieving vaginal delivery within 24 hours of the start of induction of labour (IOL), with lower rates of uterine hyperstimulation, and similar Caesarean section and infection rates. International guidelines recommend mechanical methods as a method of IOL. We designed a prospective randomised controlled study to evaluate patient acceptance of the cervical ripening balloon (CRB) for IOL. METHODS Suitable women with a singleton term pregnancy without major fetal anomaly suitable for vaginal delivery were recruited and randomised to receive the CRB or PGE on the day of IOL. Characteristics of the women, labour and birth outcomes were obtained from case notes. Pain and satisfaction scores were obtained by interviewing the women at IOL and after delivery. The main outcome measures were participant characteristics, labour and birth outcomes, pain score, satisfaction scores, and whether the participant would recommend the mode of IOL. RESULTS There was no difference in the pain score between the two groups at the start of IOL, but thereafter, pain scores were lower in the CRB group compared to the PGE group (4.5 ± 2.3 vs. 5.6 ± 2.4, p = 0.044). Women were equally satisfied with both methods and equally likely to recommend their method for IOL. CONCLUSION Patient experience of IOL with CRB or PGE was equally satisfactory, although pain during induction was lower in the CRB group. We found that both methods of IOL are acceptable to women and should be made available to provide more options.

Abstract

Transparent implantable devices have received significant attention in neuroscience and biomedical engineering by combining neural recording and optical modalities. Opaque, metal‐based electrode arrays for electrophysiology block optical imaging and cause photoelectric artifacts, making them difficult to integrate with optogenetics. Here, a photoelectric artifact‐free, highly conductive, and transparent poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) electrode array is introduced as promising neural implants. The technology which is developed in this work provides transparent neural interfaces through low‐cost, ultra‐facile method compared with other transparent materials being applied to implantable tools. The device exhibits superior optical, mechanical, and electrical characteristics to other studies, thanks to a simple ethylene glycol immersing process. The device performance is highlighted by comparing its light stimulation efficiency and photoelectric artifact extent with conventional thin gold electrodes both in vitro and in vivo. This platform can assemble transparent neural interfaces much more efficiently than any other material candidates and thus has many potential applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In order to reduce carbon emissions, which are currently a problem in the shipping and offshore plant sectors, the international community is strengthening regulations such as the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI). To cope with this, eco-friendly fuel propulsion technology is being developed, and the development of an ammonia fuel supply system is in progress. Among them, fuel valve train (FVT) technology was researched for the final supply and cutoff of fuel and purging through nitrogen for ammonia engines. In this paper, we analyzed the change in ammonia supply due to FVT opening and the change in nitrogen supply due to closure. In addition, a plan to minimize risk factors was presented by applying a control method to remove residual fuel in FVT. According to the presented FVT model, the difference in the flow rate of supplied fuel was as much as 17.8 kg/s. Additionally, by opening the gas bleed valve at intervals during the closing process and purging about 0.28 kg of nitrogen, the internal fuel could be completely discharged. This is expected to have an impact on improving the marine environment through the application of eco-friendly fuels and the development of fuel supply system technology.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze needs of convergence education on engineering and human resource development (HRD) for students in H university for increasing creative problem solving skills. To achieve the research purpose, needs analysis was conducted to students through in-depth interview about students’ project experience for graduation in H university. The research finding shows that the converged areas between engineering and HRD are: connecting technologies to social context, problem solving skills, leadership, communication skills, and teamwork skills. Based on the derived five converged areas, objectives and method of the engineering-HRD convergence education are discussed. As an effective teaching and learning method, a problem-based learning and a project method are suggested. Finally, considerations for successful implementation of the engineering-HRD convergence education are discussed.
