Abstract

Spatially random lithium nucleation and sluggish lithium diffusion across the electrode/electrolyte interface lead to uncontrollable lithium deposition and the growth of lithium dendrite on metallic lithium surface, causing severe safety problems. Herein, a functional rapid‐ion‐diffusion alloy layer on the metallic lithium surface (RIDAL‐Li) is designed through a simple chemical reduction reaction. Such a layer efficiently reduces energy barriers for lithium transport and thus significantly homogenizes the lithium atom flux for lateral deposition, which are confirmed by electrochemical tests, theoretical simulations, and spectroscopic analysis. Furthermore, the as‐prepared RIDAL layer also displays a much higher corrosion resistance to moisture and oxygen. As a result, in ether‐based and carbonate‐based electrolytes, the pretreated RIDAL‐Li anode can achieve a long stripping/plating lifespan of 900 h and a high Coulombic efficiency of 99% without dendrite growth. Even after being exposed to the ambient environment with relative humidity of 51% for 60 min, the RIDAL‐Li can survive for stripping/plating 400 h and exhibit a low overpotential of 18 mV, displaying the superiority for ambient atmosphere battery assembly. Matched with LiFePO4 or sulfur cathode, the full cells exhibit remarkably improved stability and capacity retention, showing its suitability for applications in lithium metal batteries. Abstract

Metallic lithium electrode with high capacity of 3860 mA h g−1 is the most promising candidate for rechargeable batteries. However, some inherent problems such as dendrite growth, uneven solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and high manufacturing risk restraint its practical application. Herein, distinct from the conventional mosaic structure, a facile fabrication of in situ self‐assembled organic/inorganic hybrid SEI with ordered dual‐layer structure on the lithium surface to suppress dendrite formation is proposed. With the aid of moderate active fluoric‐containing ionic liquid, the as‐formed lithium fluoride and robust ordered organic moieties are in situ self‐assembled on the metallic lithium surface. The evolution process of the dual‐layered structure is revealed by X‐ray spectroscopy, in situ sum frequency generation spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The formed "double protection" ordered hybrid interphase layer also exhibits the surprising ability against the corrosion of carbonate electrolyte or dry air. As a consequence, the pretreated metallic lithium electrode represents excellent stripping/plating reversibility of ≈99% and a long lifespan up to 1200 h without formation of dendrite, and remains high performance at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is much higher than most reports, showing the facilitating promising to the future utilization. Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) perovskites have been demonstrated as an effective strategy to achieve efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at high brightness. However, most 3D perovskite LEDs still suffer from serious efficiency roll-off. Here, using FAPbI3as a model system, we find that the main reason for efficiency droop and degradation in 3D perovskite LEDs is defects and the ion migration under electrical stress. By introducing bifunctional-molecule 3-chlorobenzylamine additive into the perovskite precursor solution, the detrimental effects can be significantly suppressed through the growth of high crystalline perovskites and defect passivation. This approach leads to bright near-infrared perovskite LEDs with a peak external quantum efficiency of 16.6%, which sustains 80% of its peak value at a high current density of 460 mA cm–2, corresponding to a high brightness of 300 W sr–1m–2. Moreover, the device exhibits a record half-lifetime of 49 h under a constant current density of 100 mA cm–2.

Abstract

Clear understanding of the complicated interfacial effect of luminescent nanoparticles is of vital importance for their practical applications. Here, combined in situspectroscopies based on sum-frequency generation and photoluminescence characterization of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles are established to distinguish the interfacial quenching effects from ligands and solvents. We provide clear spectroscopic evidence to demonstrate that the ligand conformation significantly influences the extent of luminescence quenching from both the ligands and solvents. Moreover, the ligand disordering induced by an enlarged surface curvature is proved to be one of the major reasons for the notorious size-dependent luminescence quenching of the upconversion nanoparticles. Finally, a conformational entropy-driven strategy is provided to increase the luminescence intensity of the upconversion nanoparticles viacapping with mixed layers of oleic and dodecanoic acids. Our findings may open up new avenues for clarifying the complex interfacial photophysical issues regarding inorganic luminescent nanoparticles and promoting their practical applications.

Abstract

The use of nitrogen fertilizers has been estimated to have supported 27% of the world’s population over the past century. Urea (CO(NH2)2) is conventionally synthesized through two consecutive industrial processes, N2+ H2→ NH3followed by NH3+ CO2→ urea. Both reactions operate under harsh conditions and consume more than 2% of the world’s energy. Urea synthesis consumes approximately 80% of the NH3produced globally. Here we directly coupled N2and CO2in H2O to produce urea under ambient conditions. The process was carried out using an electrocatalyst consisting of PdCu alloy nanoparticles on TiO2nanosheets. This coupling reaction occurs through the formation of C–N bonds via the thermodynamically spontaneous reaction between *N=N* and CO. Products were identified and quantified using isotope labelling and the mechanism investigated using isotope-labelled operando synchrotron-radiation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. A high rate of urea formation of 3.36 mmol g–1h–1and corresponding Faradic efficiency of 8.92% were measured at –0.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode.
