Momordica charantia L. saponins (MCS) may promote wound-healing properties but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to examine the effects and mechanisms of MCS on diabetic wounds. The results have shown that higher MCS intake lowered fasting blood glucose levels, serum lipids, and lipopolysaccharides in diabetic mice. MCS-treated diabetic mice exhibited faster wound healing than the diabetic control groups. After three days, the diabetic control groups exhibited a wound area reduction of only 19.3%, while a 39.75% reduction was observed following high-dose MCS treatment. Five potential biomarkers were screened in the metabolomics study. The results revealed that MCS mainly regulated glycerophospholipid metabolism, fructose and mannose metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, pyrimidine metabolism, and the Krebs cycle, thus affecting wound healing. Overall, MCS could not only exert a hypoglycemic effect but also promote diabetic wound healing, making it a potential treatment option for diabetes-related wounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of environmentally friendly and cost-effective lubricating materials to reduce friction and wear at the macroscale is crucial for reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, thereby enhancing sustainability. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as viable alternatives to traditional lubricants due to their ease of preparation, affordability, reproducibility, and superior tribological properties. Herein, a series of natural ternary DESs (TDESs) are successfully developed by blending eco-friendly and economical D -sorbitol and ethanolamine with quaternary ammonium salts through hydrogen bond interactions that may be regarded as a new and green liquid lubricating system. The synthesized TDESs exhibit exceptional thermal stability, rheological properties, corrosion resistance, and wettability towards metallic substrates. Moreover, the experimental results combined with molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the TDESs can form a robust protective lubricating film on steel surfaces through polar adsorption and tribochemical reactions. Consequently, the synthesized TDESs demonstrate a low friction coefficient (∼0.1) and ultra-low wear rate (as low as 7.8 × 10−10 mm3 N−1 m−1), exhibiting a near-zero wear behavior on steel surfaces under high load (100 N) and multi-environment scenarios. This research not only highlights the potential applications of DESs in tribology but also provides guidance for the future generation of green and high-performance liquid lubricating materials. English-medium Instruction (EMI), that is, the use of the English language to teach academic subjects apart from English, is a growing phenomenon around the world. In view of the facilitative role of language in content learning, scholars have stressed the need to incorporate a language focus into EMI classrooms. One practical question that arises from this discussion is "How?" This study, through a telling case, intends to reveal the classroom practices of an EMI teacher who explicitly addresses different language issues during her content teaching in a psychology course in a Macau university. Drawing on multiple sources of data including field observations and interviews, the authors unearth three forms of the teacher's language-related teaching practices – (1) teaching language for content comprehension, (2) teaching language for classroom engagement, and (3) teaching language through feedback. Specific teaching techniques are further identified and discussed in relation to various personal and contextual factors surrounding the EMI classroom. Practical insights are offered to individual EMI teachers in embracing a language focus to facilitate content learning in EMI programs across geographical contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims. The variation of malolactic fermentation (MLF) behavior between Oenococcus oeni and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is crucial for wine quality. This work aimed to evaluate the fermentation kinetics of preacclimatized indigenous O. oeni (strains of SD‐2a and 144‐46) and Lp. plantarum (strains of XJ25 and XJA2), and their effect on color, polyphenols, volatile components, and sensory characteristics of wine. Methods and Results. The changes of polyphenols, color, volatile components, and sensory properties of a low‐pH Merlot wine (pH < 3.3) after MLF with indigenous O. oeni and Lp. plantarum strains were investigated and compared. O. oeni gave wine more floral and balsamic aromas and increased the proportion of co‐pigmented anthocyanins. Only strain 144‐46 of O. oeni could complete fermentation during 6‐day MLF (final concentration of L‐malic acid <0.1 g/L). However, both Lp. plantarum strains effectively and thoroughly metabolized L‐malic acid within 3 days for XJA2 and 5 days for XJ25 while maintaining a substantial population of viable cells. Lp. plantarum significantly enhanced the proportion of polymerized anthocyanins and the fruity, caramel, fatty, roasted, and herbaceous notes in wine through the modification of volatile profiles. Conclusions. Lp. plantarum after preacclimation shows more robust MLF performance compared to O. oeni. O. oeni prefers to give wine more floral and balsamic aromas, and a high proportion of co‐pigmented anthocyanins. Lp. plantarum prefers to give wine more herbal and chemical aromas and a high proportion of polymerized anthocyanins. Significance of the Study. The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-dependent Cl− channel, is closely associated with multiple pathogen infections, such as SARS-CoV-2. However, whether the function of the CFTR is involved in herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection has not been reported. To evaluate the association of CFTR activity with HSV infection, the antiviral effect of CFTR inhibitors in epithelial cells and HSV-infected mice was tested in this study. The data showed that treatment with CFTR inhibitors in different concentrations, Glyh-101 (5–20 μM), CFTRi-172 (5–20 μM) and IOWH-032 (5–20 μM), or the gene silence of the CFTR could suppress herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) replication in human HaCaT keratinocytes cells, and that a CFTR inhibitor, Glyh-101 (10–20 μM), protected mice from HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection. Intracellular Cl− concentration ([Cl−]i) was decreased after HSV infection via the activation of adenylyl cyclase (AC)-cAMP signaling pathways. CFTR inhibitors (20 μM) increased the reduced [Cl−]i caused by HSV infection in host epithelial cells. Additionally, CFTR inhibitors reduced the activity and phosphorylation of SGK1 in infected cells and tissues (from the eye and vagina). Our study found that CFTR inhibitors can effectively suppress HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection, revealing a previously unknown role of CFTR inhibitors in HSV infection and suggesting new perspectives on the mechanisms governing HSV infection in host epithelial cells, as well as leading to potential novel treatments.
