110. Orbital pacing and secular evolution of lake-level changes reconstructed by sedimentary noise modeling during the Early Jurassic icehouses-(super)greenhouses

Abstract

Lake-level changes can significantly affect paleoenvironmental evolution, resource occurrence, terrestrial carbon budget, and biodiversity in continental basins. Climate is one of the most critical factors controlling lake-level changes. Paleoclimate of the Early Jurassic has been evidenced by oscillating icehouses to (super) greenhouses with interrupted intermittent extreme climatic events (hyperthermal and cooling), e.g., the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (~183 Ma) and the late Pliensbachian cooling event (~185 Ma). Lake-level evolution and hydrologic cycling on Earth’s surface during the Early Jurassic icehouses-to-(super)greenhouses are thus far poorly understood due to a lack of continuous high-resolution nonmarine evidence. Here we present a super-long nonmarine lake level record for this pivotal interval from the early Pliensbachian to Toarcian by sedimentary noise modeling, and construct a 16.7-Myr-long astronomical time scale (174.2 Ma to 190.9 Ma) based on cyclostratigraphy analysis of rock color datasets (CIE b*) of the Qaidam Basin. Our results document lake-level oscillations on a 5-to 10-million-year (Myr) scale which shows a pronounced correlation with long-term climate variation and extreme climatic events, and 1- to 2.5-Myr-scale lake-level changes that are prominently paced by the 2.4-Myr long-eccentricity forcing and the 1.2-Myr obliquity forcing. At the Pliensbachian Stage, the 1.2-Myr-scale lake-level changes are in phase with the coeval sea-level variations. Orbitally forced growth and decay of the ephemeral or permanent ice sheets in polar regions are interpreted to control the synchronous ups-and-downs of continental lake level and global sea level. However, during the Toarcian ice-free greenhouses to (super)greenhouses, the 1.2-Myr-scale lake-level variations show an anti-phase relationship with global sea level, indicating a ‘seesaw’ interaction between continental reservoirs (lakes and groundwater) and global oceans. The 2.4-Myr long-eccentricity cycles mainly regulate variations of lake level and sea level by controlling the growth and decay of small-scale continental ice sheets, which is especially notable during the Pliensbachian Stage. These findings indicate a remarkable transition of hydrological cycling pattern during the Pliensbachian-Toarcian icehouses to (super)greenhouses, which provides new perspectives and evidence for investigating the hypothesis of global sea-level changes (e.g., glacio-eustasy and aquifer-eustasy) and long-period astronomical forcing in nonmarine stratigraphy.

Abstract

A novel energetic microsphere with multicore hollow structure and uniform particle size is prepared by an improved suspension polymerization-thermal expansion method with methyl methacrylate, azodicarbonamide (AC) and TiH2 powder as monomer, blowing agent and core material, respectively. The energetic hollow microspheres (EHMs) can play double roles as sensitizers and energetic additives in emulsion explosive, and experimental results show that the EHMs could increase the power of emulsion explosive without affecting its safety. This method provides a completely new idea for the development of high energy emulsion explosive.

Abstract

The effect of particle size polydispersity (σD) on coal dust explosibility was studied using a 20-L spherical explosion test apparatus. Four kinds of blends with a fixed median diameter (D50) of 95 μm but varying σD of 1.18, 1.70, 1.96 and 2.40, were prepared by mixing original coal samples with relative low σD. Experimental results showed that the values of maximum pressure rise (Pex) and maximum rate of pressure rise ((dP/dt)ex·V1/3) of coal blends with the same D50 of 95 μm varied largely with different σD, and bigger σD produced larger Pex and (dP/dt)ex·V1/3 values. The Sauter mean diameter (D3,2) presented the best correlation between particle size and the explosion parameters for the blended coal samples. Risk assessment evaluation of coal dust should be reported in terms of D3,2 and σD to avoid serious underestimation.

Abstract

The flame propagation through TiH2 dust cloud at near constant pressure condition is studied in a series of experiments using an apparatus with transparent latex balloons. The influential factors for the combustion performance of TiH2 dust cloud, including dust concentration, particle size, scale of isobaric space and oxygen content are investigated. Results show that the burning velocity increases with dust concentration in the fuel-lean mixtures, and then plateaus after crossing the stoichiometric condition, while the trend of flame speed changing with dust concentration varies for different mean particle sizes (D50) of 48 and 106 μm. The flame propagation speed of dust cloud is positively correlated to the isobaric space scale and oxygen content. The burning mechanism of TiH2 dust is thought to be mainly controlled by diffusion regime, the appearance of hydrogen gas accelerates the combustion rate of TiH2 particles and also makes the TiH2 dust changed from a discrete media to a continuum, which may account for the phenomenon that the flame speed in dust cloud of TiH2 is larger than that of Ti at the same concentration no matter in air or oxygen atmosphere.

Abstract

Although chlorobromoisocyanuric acid has been widely used in agriculture, its deleterious toxicity on aquatic organisms remains rare. In this study, zebrafish were exposed to chlorobromoisocyanuric acid (0, 30, 40, and 50 mg/L) from 10 to 96 h post‐fertilization (hpf). We found a significant reduction in immune cell numbers (neutrophils and macrophages) and the area of thymus at 96 hpf. The expression of immune‐related genes and pro‐inflammatory cytokines genes were upregulated. Besides, chlorobromoisocyanuric acid triggered neutrophils cell apoptosis. The mRNA and protein levels of pro‐apoptotic p53 pathway and the Bax/Bcl‐2 ratio further indicated the underlying mechanism. Furthermore, the oxidative stress was observed that the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde significantly increased. Subsequently, the antioxidant agent astaxanthin significantly attenuated the level of oxidative stress and the dysregulation of inflammatory response. In summary, our results showed that chlorobromoisocyanuric acid induced developmental defects and immunotoxicity of zebrafish, partly owing to oxidative stress and cell apoptosis. Abstract

When the traditional dark channel prior (DCP) algorithm is used for image defogging, it faces some problems such as unsatisfactory restoration of the target edge details, distortion in large‐scale and high‐brightness sky regions. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an improved dark channel defogging algorithm based on the HSI colour space, named the IDCP algorithm. First, an asymmetric mean filter window is used to obtain the modified dark channel image to improve the grey value mutation in the traditional dark channel image. Based on this work, an improved global atmospheric transmittance calculation method is proposed, which effectively improves the inapplicability of the dark channel prior in large‐scale and high‐brightness sky regions. Finally, the Laplacian operator is used to sharpen the image to enhance the target edge information. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively solve the distortion phenomenon caused by the traditional DCP algorithm when handling large‐scale and high‐brightness sky regions, improve the target edge details, and restore the true colour of the image scene.
