Lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) is anuncommon, benign, cutaneous disorder thatinvolves lymphatic dilatation to cause vesicularand papular lesions on the trunk, extremities, andanogenital areas. It may be a diagnostic challengewhen appearing in the anogenital region andoften is misdiagnosed and mistreated as infectiousetiologies, which include molluscum contagiosumand condylomata accuminata. We report a healthy40-year-old man with a six-month history of aneruption of multiple, asymptomatic, scrotal papulesthat were diagnosed as lymphangiomas. Awarenessof scrotal LC in adult men without prior disease orsymptoms is necessary for proper diagnosis andavoidance of unnecessary treatment.

Objectives: Head and neck lymphatic malformation is a rare benign tumor, mainly affecting children under 1 year of age. Total resection is often difficult, and recurrence is frequent. Functional and esthetic sequelae are a major issue., Materials and Methods: A single-center retrospective study recruited patients with head and neck lymphatic malformation managed surgically, with or without associated sclerosis by alcohol, bleomycin or aetoxisclerol, between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2013. Local control, recurrence and complications rates were analyzed, as were swallowing disorder, tracheostomy and impaired phonation., Results: Twenty-three patients, with a mean age of 15.80 years, were included. Location was suprahyoid in 17 cases (73.91%) and infrahyoid in 6 (26.09%). There were 11 macrocysts (47.82%), 2 microcysts (8.70%) and 10 mixed lesions (43.48%). Three patients showed spontaneous resolution; 12 patients (52.17%) underwent a single surgical procedure, 2 (8.7%) multiple procedures, 2 (8.7%) 1 surgical procedure and 1 sclerosis, 2 (8.7%) 1 surgical procedure and multiple scleroses, and 2 (8.7%) multiple procedures and multiple scleroses. The local control rate was 69.56%. There were 8 recurrences (34.78%), all in suprahyoid microcystic or mixed lesions. There were 2 complications (8.7%): 1 severe upper cervical edema following sclerosis of the floor of the mouth, and 1 postsurgical palsy of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. In 1 case (4.35%), a nasogastric tube was required for 6 days, without tracheostomy., Conclusion: Recurrence was frequent, with non-negligible functional and esthetic impact, especially in case of suprahyoid and microcystic lesion., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. We describe a 21-year-old woman who presented with chest pain and dyspnea on exertion and who was found to have a large pericardial mass. Multimodality imaging was instrumental in narrowing the differential diagnosis and planning surgical treatment, which included coronary artery bypass and right-sided heart reconstruction. The final pathologic diagnosis was lymphohemangioma; to our knowledge, this was the largest cardiac/pericardial vascular tumor ever to be reported in the literature., Competing Interests: none, (Copyright © 2016 Canadian Cardiovascular Society. Background Context: Cavernous lymphangioma is a rare slow-growing tumor that can cause neurologic compromise when it involves the central nervous system. Involvement of the spinal column is rare but may involve the osseous structures or the epidural space of the spinal column., Purpose: We report the first case of an intradural, extramedullary cavernous lymphangioma involving the thoracic spinal cord., Methods: An 83-year-old woman presented with progressive gait ataxia, bilateral lower extremity weakness, and a band-like sensation in the middle and lower thoracic dermatomes. Magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spinal cord revealed hyperintensity on T2 and enhancement of an intradural cystic mass along the dorsal aspect of the T5-T8 levels with significant compression of the spinal cord., Results: Complete surgical resection was difficult owing to the adherence of the tumor to the pial surface and microvasculature of the thoracic spinal cord. Recurrence of the mass was ultimately treated with cystic fluid diversion into the peritoneum. At her follow-up visit after 28 months, the patient was able to ambulate with minimal assistance. A comparative literature review is presented. There are no reports of intradural thoracic spinal cord involvement in the literature., Conclusions: Intradural cavernous lymphangioma of the spine poses a unique surgical challenge for complete resection. Purpose To describe clinical, computed tomographic (CT), and positron emission tomographic (PET) features, correlation of CT and pathologic results, and survival of patients with pulmonary intravascular lymphomatosis. Materials and Methods The institutional review board approved this retrospective study with waiver of patient consent. Forty-two patients with pulmonary intravascular lymphomatosis were identified, 11 (26%) of whom showed lung involvement. CT features were correlated with histopathologic results. Clinical and survival outcomes were compared between patients with and those without pulmonary involvement by adopting the χ(2), Student t, or Kaplan-Meier analysis with log-rank tests. Results At clinical presentation, all 11 patients showed B symptoms (systemic symptoms of fever, night sweats, and weight loss), 10 had respiratory and four had neurologic symptoms, and two had skin lesions. Patients received cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone chemotherapy with (n = 5) or without (n = 6) rituximab, and seven (64%) patients died. Patients with lung involvement showed reduced overall and recurrence-free survival (median; 10.8 and 18.9 months, respectively) compared with those without lung involvement (median, 18.4 and 31.0 months, respectively) (P = .338 and .065, respectively). The most common CT abnormality was bilateral ground-glass opacity (GGO, n = 10), with increased fluorodeoxyglucose uptake at PET/CT (seven of seven patients). GGO correlated histopathologically with the expanded alveolar septal vasculatures and perivascular spaces filled with neoplastic lymphoid cells. Conclusion Pulmonary intravascular lymphomatosis appeared as bilateral GGO on CT images, with increased fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on PET/CT images. GGO on CT images correlated with the area of expanded alveolar septae because of distended vessels filled with neoplastic lymphoid cells. Lymphangioma circumscriptum of the vulva occurs in patients who have undergone radical hysterectomy, lymph node dissection, or radiation therapy for management of advanced uterine cancer. Since vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum typically presents as multiple, grossly verrucous vesicles of various sizes, it may be impossible to clinically distinguish vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum from other vulvoperineal cutaneous diseases. In the present study, 16 (1.6%) out of the 1,024 vulvar biopsy or excision specimens were diagnosed as lymphangioma circumscriptum. In two (12.5%) out of the 16 cases, unusual histopathological findings were observed. Both patients had previously undergone radical hysterectomy with lymph node dissection and postoperative radiation therapy or concurrent chemoradiation therapy for advanced cervical cancer. Microscopic examination revealed high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, which were located immediately adjacent to the normal squamous epithelium covering the dilated subepithelial lymphatic vessels. Further, human papillomavirus genotyping confirmed that both patients were infected with high-risk human papillomavirus. High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion cannot be grossly distinguished from vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum because the multiple, verrucous vesicles that constitute the characteristic gross appearance of vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum hinder its distinction. In this regard, our cases of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, located adjacent to vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum, support the notion that active surgical excision is necessary for the treatment of vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest.

Pancreatic cytology can make a real difference to the management of patients. However it is a challenge in those cases where a definitive diagnosis of malignancy cannot be made with confidence. This creates the need for a unified terminology and nomenclature system that provides intra- and interdepartmental guidance for diagnosis. Hemolymphangioma is a rare vascular developmental error. It comprises malformed venous and lymphatic component in various proportion. To the best of our knowledge, only a few cases have been reported in the literature so far. Here, we report a case of huge intraperitoneal cystic mass in a 3-year-old boy that was presented to hospital with intractable abdominal pain. On examination, he had fever along with associated symptoms like cough and sputum. Abdomen was distended with no tenderness or rebound tenderness. On computed tomography scan, huge cystic mass was seen and was diagnosed as intraperitoneal benign cystic lesion. Excisional surgery of the lesion was planned. On surgery, lesion was found to be originated from greater omentum and no adhesion was seen in surrounding tissue. Complete excision of the lesion was done. Histopathological specimen after surgery suggested it to be hemolymphangioma. Follow-up for 6 months showed no recurrence.Hemolymphangioma of the greater omentum is benign tumor and accurate diagnosis before surgery is still a challenge. Presentation of disease may vary from simple well-defined cystic lesion to aggressive ill-defined lesion mimicking malignancy. We report a case of an axillary lymphangioma in a fetus delivered at 30 weeks' gestation with suspected intralesional hemorrhage based on the ultrasonic findings. In the ultrasonic examination at 15 weeks' gestation, the fetus was found to have a multilocular mass spreading from the axilla to the chest wall, which was diagnosed as an axillary lymphangioma. Chromosome analysis by amniocentesis showed a normal karyotype, and no other malformations were observed. At 29 weeks, the mass had increased in size, and color Doppler ultrasound examination revealed that the middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA-PSV) reached 80.2 cm/s [1.86 MoM (multiples of the median)]. Intralesional bleeding was suspected because of the multiple images of hemorrhage in which sites of blood spouting in a pulsatile fashion were detected within the mass. Cordocentesis at 30 weeks revealed that fetal hemoglobin concentration was 5.1 g/dL. An emergency Cesarean section was performed. A female weighing 2810 g, including the mass, was delivered, and the blood hemoglobin level was 5.9 g/dL at birth. Blood transfusion, fine-needle aspiration of the fluid in the mass, intralesional injection of OK-432, and partial excision of the lymphangioma were performed after birth. Ultrasonic examination proved useful in the diagnosis of intralesional bleeding in this lymphangioma.

Primary lymphangioma arising from the ovary is a rare tumor, with only 24 cases reported to date. As it is often accompanied by ascites or recurrence, similar to a malignant tumor, an aggressive treatment approach is used for disease control. In this report, we describe a 75-year-old woman with a left ovarian lymphangioma that increased in size during the menopause period. Microscopic examination of the tumor showed thin-walled multilocular cystic spaces and immunoreactivity for D2-40, a specific marker for lymphatic endothelium, lining the cystic spaces. The patient has been doing well for 5 years postoperatively. Ovarian cystic lymphangioma should be included in the differential diagnosis of an ovarian cyst and long-term follow-up is recommended to exclude malignant behavior. We also summarize a total of 25 cases, including the case presented here.

A 14-year-old girl presented with progressively worsening intermittent orthopnea. Imaging studies showed cardiomegaly, extensive pericardial effusion, and a mediastinal tumor. By pericardial drainage, approximately 8,000-mL fluid was collected over 10 days. Left thoracoscopic pericardial fenestration and mediastinal tumor biopsy were performed, revealing lymphangiomatosis. Chylous pleural effusion developed post-surgery. Although control was attempted, her condition worsened. Eight months later, she died of sudden cardiopulmonary arrest. Autopsy revealed systemic spread of the primary lesion from the hyperplastic lymph ducts to the parietal pleura and mediastinum confirming systemic lymphangiomatosis.

Objective: To assess the clinical outcomes of surgical treatment for acquired vulvar lymphangioma circumscriptum in patients who received radical surgery and/or adjuvant radiation therapy for cervical cancer., Methods: A retrospective chart review of eight patients was performed to assess the demographic information, chief complaints, treatment modality for cervical cancer, location, and primary treatment modality for vulvar LC, postoperative changes in symptoms, and/or signs, the development of local recurrence and the outcome of patients., Results: All eight patients were previously diagnosed with cervical cancer FIGO clinical stage IA to IIA and received surgery, radiation therapy, or concurrent chemoradiation therapy. Microscopic examination revealed multiple, dilated, D2-40-positive dermal vascular channels containing eosinophilic proteinaceous material, consistent with LC. Most chief complaints showed considerable improvements on assessment at the outpatient clinic after the primary surgery. No patient showed aggravation of symptoms. Two patients developed local recurrences. One patient developed recurrence on the opposite side 13 months after local excision. We performed a second wide local excision. Another patient developed recurrence 47 months after the primary surgery. Since the lesion was very small and localized, we decided to manage it conservatively, but monitor it very closely. The remaining six patients remained free of recurrence., Conclusion: It is not easy for gynecologists to have an initial clinical diagnosis of LC, because there are a number of diseases that exhibit similar clinical manifestation to that of vulvar LC. Even if it is diagnosed correctly, local recurrence often occurs. Relevant symptoms associated with LC are not only distressing, but also affect patients' quality of life. Based on our data, we propose that surgical treatment could provide a more long-lasting answer compared to other treatment modalities, since it is beneficial in terms of clinical outcomes. In the future, a long-term follow-up investigation is required to assess the prognosis and to compare the efficacy and side effects of each modality.

Purpose: To present series of patients with large rare primary lesions of the adrenal glands that were operated in our department. The initial indication for surgery was decided based on their impressive similarity to other more sinister adrenal pathologies., Methods: The clinical records of the department and histopathology reports, covering the 1986-2015 period were assessed. Rare adrenal pathologies that preoperatively were clinically mimicking other adrenal tumors were included., Results: In total, 8 patients (age range 20-75 years) with rare tumors of the adrenal glands were found. Seven patients had a preoperative indication for adrenalectomy due to the possibility of malignancy. In one patient surgery was undertaken due to the possible diagnosis of adrenal hemorrhagic cyst. Among these patients 4 had a histopathologic diagnosis of hemangiomas, one of a lymphangiomatous cyst and 3 of myelolipomas., Conclusion: Rare benign tumors of the adrenal glands can present as very large lesions that can be either diagnosed incidentally or due to atypical symptoms. Though unusual, they should be considered in the differential diagnostic approach of adrenal lesions, because they share common clinical and radiological characteristics with more sinister and frequent lesions such as malignant tumors and also hematomas.

Objectives: Lymphangiomatous lesions involving the gastrointestinal (GI) tract remain incompletely characterized, and their clinical and histopathologic features have not been systematically evaluated. The distinction between a primary lymphatic malformation (lymphangioma) and a dilation of existing lymphatics (lymphangiectasia) is of clinical significance, since lymphangiectasia may occur in the setting of lymphatic obstruction due to an unsampled malignancy. We describe clinical and morphologic features of lymphangiomas of the GI tract in adult and pediatric populations and contrast them with lymphangiectasia., Methods: We performed a retrospective review of adult and pediatric lymphangiomas and lymphangiectasia involving the GI tract., Results: Thirty-six cases of lymphangioma and lymphangiectasia were retrieved, and clinical presentation and histologic features were compared. Lymphangiomas had distinct clinical presentations in adults and children, with adult lesions being more frequently asymptomatic and more frequently involving the superficial mucosal layers of the GI tract. Microscopically, lymphangiomas mostly consisted of confluent dilated spaces with a smooth muscle component. This appearance differed from lymphangiectasia, which lacked a complete distinct endothelial or smooth muscle lining and diffusely involved the mucosa and submucosa., Conclusions: Morphologic features of GI tract lymphangiomas can be reliably distinguished from lymphangiectasia by clinical and pathologic characteristics., (Copyright© by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.)

An asymptomatic 57-year-old man was referred for evaluation of a 10 mm pale pink subepithelial polypoid lesion of the distal oesophagus; the lesion was found incidentally during an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) revealed a heterogeneous, although primarily hypoechogenic, well-circumscribed lesion, located in the submucosa. Owing to the absence of endosonographic features, which would have allowed for a precise diagnosis, EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration was performed; however, the cytology was inconclusive because of the lack of cellular representation. We chose to remove it by cap-assisted endoscopic mucosal resection. However, due to its shape and deep location, complete removal was not achieved. A macrobiopsy was taken, and histological examination, of all oesophageal layers except the adventitia, revealed many irregularly dilated lymphatic vessels, beneath normal squamous epithelium. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of lymphangioma. A follow-up EUS did not reveal any changes. Objective: To describe the clinicopathological spectrum of Lymphangioma Circumscriptum (LC)., Study Design: Observational case series., Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pathology and Microbiology, AKUH, Karachi, from 2002 to 2012., Methodology: All reported cases of LC were retrieved from medical record. Clinical and pathological features were noted. Frequency percentages were determined., Results: There were 29 cases of LC predominantly males (62%). The mean age was 27.17 ±15.5 years. The commonest sites was anal/perianal region (24%) followed by extremities (17%) and tongue, (14%). Vulval LC was seen in 3 patients. Two cases were described on scrotum. The lesions were most commonly suspected as viral warts, mole or polyp (in anal region). Vesicles with erosions and bleeding and localized growth were the usual clinical presentations. Four of the patients presented with swelling since birth. All were treated with surgical excision. Microscopic examination revealed acanthotic squamous epithelium with papillomatosis. The subepithelial region had collections of lymphatic channels composed of ectatic dilated vessels with serum and inflammatory cells in their lumina. The lymphatic channels were seen in deeper layers along with lymphocytic aggregates., Conclusion: Lymphangioma circumscriptum is a malformation of abnormal lymphatic channels with feeding cisterns in subcutaneous tissue. It is a benign lesion usually occurring in anal/perianal region and confused with warts. Surgical excision is preferred mode of treatment.

Lymphangioma is a benign vascular lesion with characteristics of subepithelial tumor which can proliferate in the lymphatic system. Lymphangioma of the small-bowel mesentery is rare, having been reported in less than 2% of all lymphangiomas. Lymphangioma does not require any specific treatment because it is absolutely a benign tumor. However, surgical exploration is rarely required for cases with disease-related symptoms or complications, or for those misdiagnosed as a malignant lesion. We recently experienced a case of mesenteric cavernous lymphangomas in a 53-year-old female who was misdiagnosed as having a liposarcoma. The final diagnosis was confirmed by a pathologic examination of the specimen that was obtained via laparoscopic exploration. Herein, we report a very rare case of mesenteric cavernous lymphangioma along with a brief review of relevant literature.

Connexins (Cxs), proteins that are vital for intercellular communication in vertebrates, have recently been shown to play a critical role in lymphatic development. However, our knowledge is currently limited regarding the functional relationships of Cxs with other proteins and signaling pathways. Cell culture studies have shown that Cx37 is necessary for coordinated activation of the transcription factor NFATc1, which cooperates with Foxc2 (another transcription factor) during lymphatic endothelial development. These data suggest that Cxs, Foxc2, and NFATc1 are part of a common developmental pathway. Here, we present a detailed characterization of Foxc2(+/-)Cx37(-/-) mice, demonstrating that lymphatic network architecture and valve formation rely on the concurrent embryonic expression and function of Foxc2 and Cx37. Foxc2(+/-)Cx37(-/-) mice have lymphedema in utero, exhibit craniofacial abnormalities, show severe dilation of intestinal lymphatics, display abnormal lacteal development, lack lymphatic valves, and typically die perinatally (outcomes not seen in Foxc2(+/-) or Cx37(-/-) mice separately). We provide a rigorous, quantitative documentation of lymphatic vascular network changes that highlight the specific structural alterations that occur in Foxc2(+/-)Cx37(-/-) mice. Lymphangioma is a rare pathology in children and even more exotic when encountered in adults. We review the current data on this subject underlining possible controversies and limitations. This is the case of an adult male who underwent a complete clinical examination and ENT performed ultrasound exam, along with contrast CT prior to complete surgical removal of the mass. The mass was 6 cm in diameter and compressed the left lobe of the thyroid gland. Pathology result confirmed the diagnosis of lymphagioma.

Surgical removal of head-neck vascular neoplasms may have severe complications, although surgery remains a very important treatment modality. One of the most important aspects is to avoid the rupture of the tumor's capsule and to minimize functional complications, especially in the excision of benign tumors. The transoral robotic surgery allows removing lesions in challenging anatomical areas. Furthermore, the current robotic instrumentation does not allow a fine dissection of the structures and capsule rupture is a potential event. Here, the authors describe a minimally invasive technique using transoral robotic surgery for removal of vascular tumors in head-neck. Particular attention was given to the description of the diagnostic work up, the preoperative assessment and the surgical steps. No complications were encountered postoperatively. Transoral robotic surgery for vascular tumors appears to be a safe and feasible technique with minimal complications.

Background/aims: To analyze our experience of segmental duodenectomy for tumors located at the third and fourth portion of the duodenum and attempt to explore the security and feasibility of this surgical procedure., Methodology: A retrospective cohort study of five patients who underwent segmental duodenectomy in our hospital, medical records were analyzed in this study., Results: The initial symptoms in five patients are not specific. Five were surgically treated by segmental resection. All patients without postoperative anastomotic leakage, the gastroparesis and anastomotic stenosis each appeared in a case and all recovered after supportive care. Pathological examination showed: 3 cases of stromal tumor, 1 :ases of lymphangioma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Postoperative gastrointestinal bleeding does not appear in the lymphangioma,two cases of high risk group of stromal tumor patients received targeting therapy with Imatinib Mesylate for 2 years after resection, the patient with lymphoma administer postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. All patients are still alive and the lymphoma patient developed postoperative local recurrence after approximately six months., Conclusions: Segmental duodenectomy is a reliable and curative option for most duodenal benign tumor and stromal tumor located at the third and fourth portion. It is also applicable to some malignant tumor.

Hemolymphangioma is a malformation of both lymphatic vessels and blood vessels. Splenic hemolymphangioma is extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of 62-year-old woman with ambiguous upper quadrant abdominal pain for two months who was found to have an occupying lesion in the spleen on computed tomography. She was eventually diagnosed with hemolymphangioma of the spleen. The patient underwent total splenectomy. Neither symptoms nor recurrence was found during the one-year follow-up period.

Cystic lymphangioma, a lymphatic system malformation, is usually observed in infants and children and is rarely found in adults. It most commonly occurs in the cervicofacial region, followed by the axilla. Mediastinal cystic lymphangioma is rare, accounting for 1.8% of all mediastinal cysts. Herein, we present an exceedingly rare adult case of mediastinal cystic lymphangioma that had increased in size over a 5-year period. Although fluid collection might be an alternative explanation for this increase in size, this lymphangioma might harbor a neoplastic nature related to the recently discovered PIK3CA mutation.

Lymphatic malformation or lymphangioma is a benign proliferation of the lymphatics accounting for 4% of all vascular malformations and 26% of all benign vascular tumors. There are several reports about genital lymphangiomas mimicking venereal lesions, such as genital warts. Hereby we described a case of a 24 year old man affected by multiple vesicles and warts in genital area. All hematological and biochemical parameters, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Treponema Pallidum tests, C1-Inhibitor and C1-Q values were within limits. An accurate fulguration and wide excision of bigger lesions were performed. Histological examination showed numerous dilated lymphatic vessels in the superficial dermis with infiltration of inflammatory cells, that is a histopathological picture compatible with genital lymphangioma. Considering our clinical suspicion of condylomatosis, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) Polimerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Genotyping, named INNOLiPA test, was performed, that revealed a genital infection by HPV - genotype 6. We think that our case can be considered an example of HPV infection and acquired genital lymphangioma overlap clinical syndrome. The patient presented any lesions one year after the procedure at follow-up examination.

We report a 51-year-old female patient with a solitary lymphangioma located in the upper splenic pole which was managed successfully with laparoscopic partial splenectomy. Surgery lasted 170 min and did not require blood transfusions. The patient recovered well post-operatively and was asymptomatic at the 3-mo follow-up. She had a normal platelet count and no recurrence on ultrasonography or computed tomography. Laparoscopic partial splenectomy is a safe, minimally invasive technique for the treatment of solitary splenic lymphangiomas in the splenic pole. We performed the procedure using the Habib(TM) 4X device. This laparoscopic bipolar radiofrequency device ensured a "bloodless" splenic parenchymal resection.

Lymphangiomas are congenital lymphatic malformations and cutaneous lymphangioma circumscriptum is the most common type. It is clinically characterized by clusters of translucent vesicles and the presence of dermoscopically yellow lacunae surrounded by pale septa, as well as reddish to bluish lacunae. In our case, the recently described hypopyon-like feature manifested, aiding in the sometimes difficult differential diagnosis of cutaneous lymphangioma circumscriptum with vascular lesions, further highlighting the importance of dermoscopy in what can be a diagnostic challenge.

Benign lymphangioendothelioma is a rare lesion of controversial etiology and a histopathologic mimic of Kaposi sarcoma and so-called 'well-differentiated' angiosarcoma. Its most typical clinical presentation is as a slowly expanding, erythematous patch or plaque; it rarely presents as a large mass. We report the second case of a giant benign lymphangioendothelioma, which arose as a serpiginous mass involving most of the flank of an elderly male with no prior radiation exposure and with a remote history of herpes zoster infection. A biopsy revealed numerous anastomosing vascular channels extending from the superficial dermis to the subcutis that were dilated to progressively slit-like in architecture. The endothelial cells lacked cytologic atypia, hobnailing, or significant mitotic activity, and human herpesvirus-8 expression was absent. Positivity for podoplanin (D2-40) was observed in the endothelial cells, supporting a lymphatic phenotype. Furthermore, the lesional cells lacked immunohistochemical expression of Wilms tumor 1, providing further support of a malformative - rather than neoplastic - pathogenesis., (© 2014 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Cystic lesions of the posterior triangle are a pathologic entity whose diagnosis is made in the first two years of life. Its presentation in adulthood is an incidental finding and the differential diagnosis includes cystic lymphangioma, lymphatic metastasis of thyroid cancer and branchial cyst. Often with the finding of a cervical lump, FNA is made before diagnostic imaging is performed, however, this procedure is not always advisable. We reviewed the cases of patients who came last year to our department with a cystic mass in this location and correlating the imaging findings with pathologic specimen.
