107. Extravagant Passing: Spanish Masquerade in the American Literary Imagination

Abstract

The dissertation discusses the figure and narrative of Spanish masquerade in the history of passing in American literature and culture, beginning with Spanish historias and English histories in the 16th and 17th centuries that provide a frame for the study of 19th century Chicana/o and African American literature. In the works by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá, John Smith, Herman Melville, Ellen Craft and William Craft, and María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, the manuscript provides literary readings, cultural history, and archival research, also making use of queer theory, post-colonial theory, and theories of mestiza consciousness in order to connect these particular case studies to a broader field of inquiry concerning boundary crossing and its representational practices. Whereas most critical readings on the history of passing concentrate on black-to-white performances of mobility, this dissertation introduces a new kind of passing that changes how we think about the traditional genre in order to explore how the variable of disability and illness cross-racially intervenes into the figure of the Spanish decadent colonial. Through readings of social moblity in these authors’ works, I generate a theory of extravagance, or surplus signification, in the performance of passing. A specific integer of extravagance’s operation and which the dissertation is interested is “Spanishness” as an added problem to extravagant passing. I thus situate the content of this study in the context of the traditional genre and recent theoretical discussions. The dissertation ultimately argues that by studying this confounding borderland figure what emerges is the missing historia in the history of passing, a ghosting of Spanishness in the American literary imagination, and a plural mode of subjectivity deployed by racial subjects, including la mestiza, where the dissertation uncovers a poetics of extravagance in la conciencia de la mestiza.

Abstract

Como parte de uma pesquisa de âmbito internacional, com o fim de compreender processos de inovação educativa já consolidados em práticas de docentes, este trabalho analisa as vivências de um grupo de professores considerados inovadores. Coletaram-se narrativas de seis sujeitos que atuam ou que realizaram formação continuada na Escola Pedagógica Experimental (EPE) da cidade de Bogotá (Colômbia). Da Análise Textual Discursiva emergiram três categorias: história e trajetória profissional; concepções e prática docente; inovação permanente. Defende-se que a constituição de professores inovadores ocorre pela conjugação de fatores relativos aos contextos escolares e formativos, aliados a características intrínsecas aos sujeitos e que a sustentabilidade da inovação é garantida pela reflexão e transformação contínua da prática docente. As part of an international research that aims to understand some processes of innovative education, this research analyzes the experiences of a group of teachers considered innovators. We gathered narratives of six teachers that work or have performed in-service teacher education programs in EPE - Experimental Pedagogic School of Bogota (Colombia). The Discursive Textual Analysis method has generated three categories: history and professional path; teaching conceptions and practice; permanent innovation. It is argued that innovative teachers are formed with the help of a conjugation of factors related with scholar and formative contexts, allied to characteristics inherent to the subjects. The sustainability of innovation would be guaranteed by reflection and continuous transformation of the teaching practice.

112. Comportamiento del mercado de los peces ornamentales continentales en Colombia

Abstract

This paper addresses a review of scientific literature on the commercial importance of ornamental fish (PO) in Colombia. As the main results, it was found that this market is still a global exchange activity for exotic species that generates great profits and that it has been sustained with the trade of more than one billion species each year. Most of the POs are extracted from natural populations and end up in aquariums worldwide distributed, generating depletion of the resource associated with overfishing and extraction activities. Capture and handling practices and high mortality rates represent a significant welfare problem as well as a significant economic and environmental cost for the industry. South America is still the largest species supplier, mainly the biodiverse countries with an export tradition such as Colombia, where it is constituted as a commercial or subsistence resource of great importance for the fishing and indigenous populations. A list of 522 species of PO confirmed, grouped in 13 Orders, 49 Families and 213 genera whose most desirable species are Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Osteoglossum ferreirai, Paracheirodon axelrodi, Pterophyllum altum, Panaque nigrolineatus and Callichthyidae Callichthyidae. The problems associated with the few studies carried out in PO, the limited legislation that regulates and protects ecosystems and their biodiversity, added to bad practices and incentives for cultivation, abandonment of fishing communities that depend on this resource, have limited the growth of the sector. It is urgent to consider sustainable alternatives for reducing fishing pressure on the species, which include health, nutritional and efficient use of the water resource in order to allow the use and conservation of PO species, in this way this trade would grow much more trade and its contribution to the country's economy would also be grater., Este artículo hace una revisión de literatura científica sobre la importancia comercial de los peces ornamentales (PO) en Colombia. Entre los principales resultados se encuentra que este mercado continúa siendo una actividad de intercambio mundial de especies exóticas que genera grandes ganancias y que se ha sostenido con el comercio de más de mil millones de especies cada año. La mayoría de los PO son extraídos de las poblaciones naturales y terminan su destino en acuarios distribuidos en el mundo, lo que genera agotamiento del recurso asociado a la sobrepesca y las actividades de extracción. Las prácticas de captura, manejo y las tasas elevadas de mortalidad representan un importante problema de bienestar, además de un costo económico y ambiental significativo para la industria. Suramérica sigue siendo el mayor proveedor de especies, principalmente los países biodiversos y de tradición exportadora como Colombia, donde es considerado como un recurso comercial o de subsistencia de gran importancia para las poblaciones de pescadores e indígenas. Se confirmó un listado de 522 especies de PO, agrupadas en 13 órdenes, 49 familias y 213 géneros cuyas especies más apetecidas son: Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Osteoglossum ferreirai, Paracheirodon axelrodi, Pterophyllum altum, Panaque nigrolineatus y Callichthyidae Callichthyidae. Las problemáticas asociadas a los pocos estudios realizados en PO, la limitada legislación que regule y proteja los ecosistemas y su biodiversidad, sumado a las malas prácticas y al incentivo al cultivo, el abandono de las comunidades pesqueras que dependen de este recurso, han limitado el crecimiento del sector. 113. Investigating the mechanisms behind moth declines : Plants, land-use and climate

Abstract

Moth populations have declined across large areas of north-western Europe since the mid-20th century, mirroring similar declines in other insect groups. The mechanisms behind these declines are likely manifold, but it is believed that agricultural intensification is a key factor. There were two aims of this thesis: (1) to elucidate the mechanisms behind moth decline in the UK, and (2) to determine ways in which farmland habitats could be improved for moths. Counter to expectations, between 1968 and 2016, the declines in total moth abundance were least severe in the most agriculturally intensive areas and were most severe in semi-natural habitats, as well as in urban environments. Species richness, while remaining stable at the national level, declined in only one habitat type: broadleaf woodland. No evidence was found to support the hypotheses that habitat loss, shading of the understory by canopy-closure, or overgrazing by deer had driven these declines within broadleaf woodland. Evidence was found that warm winters negatively impacted moth abundance, but this effect was consistent across all habitats. Although declines were least severe in improved grassland and arable land, the declines in total abundance were significant and ongoing, despite widespread and increasing adoption of agri-environment schemes (AES) since the early 1990s. In this thesis, the role of nectar resources and larval hostplants were explored within AES field margins on arable land, with the aim of determining how these small areas of habitat could be best managed to enhance moth abundance and diversity. It was found that the diversity of moths was greatly increased, and abundance moderately so, when margins were sown with a wide range of wildflowers and grasses, in comparison to only grasses. The evidence suggested that this was due primarily to the provision of larval hostplants, with nectar resources playing a secondary role. Abstract

The computed tomography (CT) scan of a 19-year-old man who died from an occipito-frontal gunshot wound presented an impressive radiating fracture line where the entire sagittal suture burst due to the high intracranial pressure that arose from a near-contact shot from a 9 mm bullet fired from a Glock 17 pistol. Photorealistic depictions of the radiating fracture lines along the cranial bones were created using three-dimensional reconstruction methods, such as the novel cinematic rendering technique that simulates the propagation and interaction of light when it passes through volumetric data. Since the brain had collapsed, depiction of soft tissue was insufficient on CT images. An additional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination was performed, which enabled the diagnostic assessment of cerebral injuries.

Considerações finais:AAtenção Primária à Saúde desempenha importante papel na relação entre serviço de saúde e usuário, consideradas suas características de integralidade e longitudinalidade do cuidado. Assim, o uso de tecnologias digitais pode contribuir, além do atendimento a certas necessidades e demandas de forma mais ágil, para promover maior autonomia e segurança a idosos e mais tranquilidade a seus familiares em relação aos cuidados com saúde. La Atención Primaria de Salud ha sido desafiada por la pandemia de COVID-19, especialmente en la atención a los adultos mayores. Así, las nuevas formas de abordaje de la atención, utilizando tecnologías digitales, se han vuelto imprescindibles. Objetivo: Contextualizar las estrategias basadas en la tecnología digital en el cuidado del adulto mayor y sus familias en la Atención Primaria en Salud. Desarrollo del tema: los adultos mayores, en comparación con los adultos más jóvenes, tienen menos acceso y menos habilidades para usar dispositivos de tecnología digital para comunicarse; sin embargo, el uso de tecnología digital ha contribuido al acceso de los adultos mayores a los servicios de salud en el contexto de la pandemia. Se presentarán los principales conceptos y políticas públicas relacionadas con la temática, además de experiencias latinoamericanas en el uso de tecnología digital por parte de los adultos mayores, cuidadores y profesionales de la salud. Consideraciones finales: La Atención Primaria de Salud tiene un papel importante en la relación entre el servicio de salud y el usuario, considerando su característica de atención integral y longitudinal. Digital, La resolución de situaciones matemáticos ha venido siendo un dilema que se presenta en diferentes niveles educativos y en diversas instituciones de formación de cualquier índole; en este trabajo se analizan las competencias digitales docentes implementando actividades interactivas a través del diseño de situaciones matemáticas contextualizadas para el desarrollo del pensamiento numérico y la competencia resolución de problemas en el grado quinto de primaria del Colegio Técnico Agropecuario del municipio de Encino Santander. La investigación desarrolla enfoque cualitativo con los principios metodológicos de la investigación acción-participación. Debido a las limitaciones presentadas por la pandemia que enfrenta el mundo, la población consta de ocho estudiantes. A través de la observación detallada y entrevista se observa que el uso de las TIC es indispensable para una educación de calidad e innovadora. Además se comprueba que las etapas de Polya son eficaces para resolver problemas matemáticos. Abstract

The objective is to know the gender gaps in the life of rural elderly people and their impact on old age. The methodology is qualitative, the study analyzes the life stories of 15 rural elderly people (9 women and 6 men), in Mexico. The results show that from an early age there are gender differences resulting in interdependent gaps and inequalities that affect the entire course of life, with accentuated effects on old age. El objetivo es conocer las brechas género en el curso de vida de las personas mayores rurales y sus repercusiones en la vejez. La metodología es de corte cualitativo, en el estudio se analizan las historias de vida de 15 personas mayores rurales (9 mujeres y 6 hombres), en México. Los resultados muestran que, desde edades tempranas, existen diferencias de género que se traducen en brechas y desigualdades interdependientes que afectan todo el curso de vida, con efectos acentuados en la vejez.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Since it is currently not possible to eradicate hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection with existing treatments, research continues to uncover new therapeutic strategies. HBV core protein, encoded by the HBV core gene (HBC), intervenes in both structural and functional processes, and is a key protein in the HBV life cycle. For this reason, both the protein and the gene could be valuable targets for new therapeutic and diagnostic strategies. Moreover, alterations in the protein sequence could serve as potential markers of disease progression. AIM To detect, by next-generation sequencing, HBC hyper-conserved regions that could potentially be prognostic factors and targets for new therapies. METHODS Thirty-eight of 45 patients with chronic HBV initially selected were included and grouped according to liver disease stage [chronic hepatitis B infection without liver damage (CHB, n = 16), liver cirrhosis (LC, n = 5), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, n = 17)]. HBV DNA was extracted from patients' plasma. A region between nucleotide (nt) 1863 and 2483, which includes HBC, was amplified and analyzed by next-generation sequencing (Illumina MiSeq platform). Sequences were genotyped by distance-based discriminant analysis. General and intergroup nt and amino acid (aa) conservation was determined by sliding window analysis. The presence of nt insertion and deletions and/or aa substitutions in the different groups was determined by aligning the sequences with genotype-specific consensus sequences. RESULTS Three nt (nt 1900-1929, 2249-2284, 2364-2398) and 2 aa (aa 117-120, 159-167) hyper-conserved regions were shared by all the clinical groups. All groups showed a similar pattern of conservation, except for five nt regions (nt 1946-1992, 2060-2095, 2145-2175, 2230-2250, 2270-2293) and one aa region (aa 140-160), where CHB and LC, respectively, were less conserved (P < 0.05). Some group-specific conserved regions were also observed at both nt (2306-2334 in CHB and 1935-1976 and 2402-2435 in LC) and aa (between aa 98-103 in CHB and 28-30 and 51-54 in LC) levels. No differences in insertion and deletions frequencies were observed. An aa substitution (P79Q) was observed in the HCC group with a median (interquartile range) frequency of 15.82 (0-78.88) vs 0 (0-0) in the other groups (P < 0.05 vs CHB group). CONCLUSION The differentially conserved HBC and HBV core protein regions and the P79Q substitution could be involved in disease progression. The hyper-conserved regions detected could be targets for future therapeutic and diagnostic strategies.

Abstract

1. Understanding which factors influence the ability of individuals to respond to changing temperatures is fundamental to species conservation under climate change. 2. We investigated how a community of butterflies responded to fine‐scale changes in air temperature, and whether species‐specific responses were predicted by ecological or morphological traits. 3. Using data collected across a UK reserve network, we investigated the ability of 29 butterfly species to buffer thoracic temperature against changes in air temperature. First, we tested whether differences were attributable to taxonomic family, morphology or habitat association. We then investigated the relative importance of two buffering mechanisms: behavioural thermoregulation versus fine‐scale microclimate selection. Finally, we tested whether species' responses to changing temperatures predicted their population trends from a UK‐wide dataset. 4. We found significant interspecific variation in buffering ability, which varied between families and increased with wing length. We also found interspecific differences in the relative importance of the two buffering mechanisms, with species relying on microclimate selection suffering larger population declines over the last 40 years than those that could alter their temperature behaviourally. 5. Our results highlight the importance of understanding how different species respond to fine‐scale temperature variation, and the value of taking microclimate into account in conservation management to ensure favourable conditions are maintained for temperature‐sensitive species.

Abstract

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) remains largely underdiagnosed despite recommendations of healthcare institutions and programmes designed to increase awareness. The objective was to analyse the trends in AATD diagnosis during the last 5 years in a Spanish AATD reference laboratory. This was a retrospective revision of all alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) determinations undertaken in our laboratory from 2015 to 2019. We analysed the number of AAT determinations performed and described the characteristics of the individuals tested, as well as the medical specialties and the reasons for requesting AAT determination. A total of 3507 determinations were performed, of which 5.5% corresponded to children. A significant increase in the number of AAT determinations was observed from 349 in 2015 to 872 in 2019. Among the samples, 57.6% carried an intermediate AATD (50-119 mg/dL) and 2.4% severe deficiency (<50 mg/dL). The most frequent phenotype in severe AATD individuals was PI*ZZ (78.5%), and aminotransferase levels were above normal in around 43% of children and 30% of adults. Respiratory specialists requested the highest number of AAT determinations (31.5%) followed by digestive diseases and internal medicine (27.5%) and primary care physicians (19.7%). The main reason for AAT determination in severe AATD adults was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (41.7%), but reasons for requesting AAT determination were not reported in up to 41.7% of adults and 58.3% of children. There is an increase in the frequency of AATD testing despite the rate of AAT determination remaining low. Awareness about AAT is probably increasing, but the reason for testing is not always clear

Abstract

Background: Primary prevention strategies for asthma are lacking. Its inception probably starts in utero and/or during the early postnatal period as the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) paradigm suggests. Objectives: The main objective of Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) cohort study is to unravel whether the following factors contribute causally to the developmental origins of asthma: (1) maternal obesity/adiposity and foetal growth; (2) maternal and child nutrition; (3) outdoor air pollution; (4) endocrine disruptors; and (5) maternal psychological stress. Maternal and offspring biological samples are used to assess changes in offspring microbiome, immune system, epigenome and volatilome as potential mechanisms influencing disease susceptibility. Population: Randomly selected pregnant women from three health areas of Murcia, a south‐eastern Mediterranean region of Spain, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were invited to participate at the time of the follow‐up visit for routine foetal anatomy scan at 19–22 weeks of gestation, at the Maternal‐Fetal Medicine Unit of the "Virgen de la Arrixaca" University Clinical Hospital over a 36‐month period, from March 2015 to April 2018. Design: Prospective, population‐based, maternal‐child, birth cohort study. Methods: Questionnaires on exposures and outcome variables were administered to mothers at 20–24 gestation week; 32–36 gestation week; and delivery. Children were surveyed at birth, 3 and 18 months of age and currently at 5 years. Furthermore, physical examinations were performed; and different measurements and biological samples were obtained at these time points. Preliminary results: Among the 1350 women invited to participate, 738 (54%) were finally enrolled in the study and 720 of their children were eligible at birth. The adherence was high with 612 children (83%) attending the 3 months' visit and 532 children (72%) attending the 18 months' visit.
