Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is a common disorder that puts patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. To our knowledge, there is no published study in Pub Med which evaluated both lifestyle and metabolic syndrome in hemodialysis patients. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and investigate the potential risk factors in hemodialysis patients. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 204 patients enrolled conveniently. National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria considered for Metabolic Syndrome. Demographics, lifestyle, and disease characteristics were gathered. The relationship between metabolic syndrome and its severity with independent variables was investigated through multivariable multivariate logistic and linear regressions. Results: The mean (SD) age was 55 (14) years and 42% were women. 42.6% had metabolic syndrome. Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL), high fasting blood sugar, high blood pressure (BP), increased waist circumference (WC), and high triglyceride were observed in decreasing order of frequency in 54.4%, 44.1%, 38.7%, 33.3% 28.9% of patients, respectively. The logistic regression model revealed significant associations between metabolic syndrome and physical activity (OR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.74-0.97), mood (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.002-1.078), age (OR = 1.023, 95% CI: 1.001-1.046), and missed work (OR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.76-0.97). The linear regression model revealed significant associations between metabolic syndrome severity score and physical activity (B = -0.12, 95% CI: -0.21-0.02) and sleep quality (B = 0.017, 95% CI: 0.001-0.033). Conclusion: Poorer sleep quality, lower physical activity, lower mood status, and older age were associated with higher odds of metabolic syndrome/metabolic syndrome severity score in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a Spanish rural population and assess differences in prevalence according to loneliness level, social isolation, and social support. This is a cross-sectional study of 310 patients. MetS was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program–Third Adult Treatment Panel. The UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Loneliness Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Social Support, and Lubben Social Network Scale were used to assess loneliness, perceived social support, and social isolation. Almost half of the participants fulfilled MetS diagnosis criteria. Subjects with MetS showed significantly higher levels of loneliness, less social support, and greater social isolation. Systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in socially isolated rural adults. Environmental factors may play a key role in the prevalence of MetS, so specific screening and prevention programs could help health professionals prevent the increasing rates of MetS in rural populations under these socially specific conditions of vulnerability. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic interval training and resistance training on anti-inflammatory adipokines, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, and clinical outcomes in sedentary men with metabolic syndrome. Methods: A total of 33 sedentary men with metabolic syndrome (age: 46.2 ± 4.6 years; body mass index: 35.4 ± 1.9 kg.m2) were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups: aerobic interval training (n = 12), resistance training (n = 10), or control (n = 11). Participants in the exercise groups completed a 12-week training program, 3 sessions per week, while those in the control group maintained their sedentary lifestyle. The levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), omentin-1, adiponectin, lipid profiles, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, body composition, and peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) were measured at baseline and after the intervention. Results: Both aerobic interval training and resistance training significantly improved the levels of omentin-1 and adiponectin, as well as reduced inflammation, as indicated by a decrease in hs-CRP levels. Exercise training also led to significant improvements in lipid profiles, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, and body composition. Specifically, the aerobic interval training group had significantly greater increases in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and VO2peak, as well as greater reductions in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and total cholesterol compared to the resistance training group. Conclusion: Exercise training, particularly aerobic interval training and resistance training, can be an effective non-pharmacological intervention for managing inflammation and improving cardiovascular health in metabolic syndrome patients. Purpose: A combination of physical and psychosocial risk factors put adolescents at risk for poor cardiometabolic health and chronic disease burden, often recognized as metabolic syndrome. The purposes of this study were to (1) identify the prevalence of metabolic syndrome risk among adolescents, utilizing the metabolic syndrome severity index, and (2) determine the relationship between metabolic syndrome risk and behavioral health, food insecurity, and physical inactivity among adolescents. Methods and Design: A cross‐sectional, descriptive, correlational design was deployed in an inner‐city high school in the Deep South. An 8‐month recruitment and enrollment period yielded a sample of 55 adolescents. A battery of measures included assessment of demographic data, anthropometric, cardiovascular, and psychosocial data. Utilizing these data elements, a progressive methodological approach was used to identify metabolic severity risk as a continuous variable for use in the adolescent population. Results: All participants identified as African American/Black. Among them, 71% (N = 39) were female and an average age of 16 (SD = 1.3) years old, with 67.3% (N = 37) of the sample at risk for metabolic syndrome. There was not a statistically significant relationship between metabolic syndrome severity score and behavioral health risk, food insecurity, and physical inactivity in this sample. Practice Implications: Future use of the continuous metabolic syndrome severity score may guide practice by utilizing longitudinal data to assess the trends of metabolic syndrome severity scores in relation to disease outcomes in adolescents. This may promote the identification of psychosocial and physical interrelationships with metabolic syndrome, thus improving overall health through the development of age‐appropriate interventions. Meat is not only a source of several nutrients but also a proposed risk factor for several non-communicable diseases. Here, we describe the totality of evidence for the role of meat intake for chronic disease outcomes, discuss potential mechanistic pathways, knowledge gaps, and limitations of the literature. Use of the scoping review is based on a de novo systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis on the association between poultry intake and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), qualified SRs (as defined in the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023 project) on meat intake and cancer by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and a systematic literature search of SRs and meta-analyses. The quality of the SRs was evaluated using a modified AMSTAR 2 tool, and the strength of evidence was evaluated based on a predefined criteria developed by the WCRF. The quality of the SRs was on average critically low. Our findings indicate that the evidence is too limited for conclusions for most of the chronic disease outcomes. However, findings from qualified SRs indicate strong evidence that processed meat increases the risk of colorectal cancer and probable evidence that red meat (unprocessed, processed, or both) increases the risk. The evidence suggests that both unprocessed red meat and processed meat (also including processed poultry meat) are probable risk factors for CVD mortality and stroke, and that total red meat and processed meat are risk factors for CHD. We found no sufficient evidence suggesting that unprocessed red meat, processed red meat, total red meat, or processed meat (including red and white meat) would be protective of any chronic disease. There was also no sufficient evidence to conclude on protective effect of poultry on any chronic diseases; effects on the risk of CVD, stroke, and T2D, to any direction, were regarded as unlikely. Background: The prevalence of short sleep duration is rising and is linked to chronic comorbidities, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS). Sleep extension interventions in adults with MetS comorbidities and short sleep duration are limited and vary widely in terms of approach and duration. Objectives: This pilot study aimed to test the feasibility and acceptability of a personalized 12-week systematic sleep time extension intervention on post-intervention sleep outcomes in middle-aged adults at risk forMetSwith actigraphy-estimated short sleep duration. Methods: A single-arm, 12-week, 12-session systematic sleep time extension intervention was delivered weekly via videoconferencing. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed using retention rates and mean sleep diary completions. Sleep was estimated for 14 consecutive days prior to and immediately following the 12-week intervention using wrist actigraphy. Daytime sleepiness was assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Paired sample t-tests modeled changes in study outcomes. Results: Study participants (N = 41) had a mean age of 52 years and were mostly female and White; 86% attended >80% of sessions, and mean sleep diary completion was 6.7 diaries/week. Significant improvements in sleep from pre- to post-intervention included increased total sleep time, earlier sleep onsets, more regular sleep onsets, a higher sleep regularity index, and reduced daytime sleepiness. Extending sleep, as well as improving sleep timing and regularity in middle-aged adults with actigraphy-estimated short sleep duration and at risk for MetS, is feasible and acceptable. Discussion: Behavioral sleep characteristics may be modifiable and present a novel behavioral paradigm for mitigating MetS risk. This pilot study provides a proof of concept for the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a systematic sleep time extension for middle-aged adults at risk for MetS with actigraphy-estimated short sleep duration. Aim: To examine the effect of periodontitis on the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and MetS components. Materials and Methods: This study included 4761 participants aged 30–74 years who underwent health examinations at both baseline and 8‐year follow‐up. The Japanese MetS criteria were used for diagnosis. The Community Periodontal Index was used to assess periodontal status. The association between periodontal status and MetS incidence was examined by Poisson regression analysis. Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that individuals with a ≥6 mm periodontal pocket had a significantly higher relative risk (RR) for MetS onset, as compared to individuals without deep periodontal pockets (adjusted RR 1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01–1.67). Compared to individuals without a deep periodontal pocket, individuals with a ≥6 mm periodontal pocket had significantly higher RRs for developing two components of MetS; the RRs were 1.25 (95% CI: 1.01–1.56) for abdominal obesity and 1.39 (95% CI: 1.03–1.86) for hyperglycaemia. Conclusions: Individuals with periodontitis had a significantly higher risk of MetS onset, possibly due to the influence of periodontitis on abdominal obesity and hyperglycaemia. OBJECTIVES: Certain studies have reported that handgrip strength (HGS) is associated with metabolic health risks in children and adolescents, and some studies have suggested HGS thresholds for identifying poor metabolic health. Therefore, we aimed to determine the HGS thresholds associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in children and adolescents through a systematic review. METHODS: We searched 3 electronic databases from their inception until October 2023 to identify original papers that focused on children and adolescents and assessed their risks of MetS according to specific HGS values. Studies were selected for inclusion through a planned screening process based on specific criteria. The Quality Assessment Tool for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies version 2 (QUADAS-2) was used to evaluate quality, and a meta-analysis was performed using the diagmeta R package to suggest the optimal thresholds. RESULTS: From the search, 8 studies were selected for this systematic review. For detecting MetS risk, the optimal threshold for HGS (defined as relative HGS by adjusting for body mass) was found to be 0.422, with a sensitivity of 76.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], 64.0 to 85.8) and a specificity of 62.9% (95% CI, 56.9 to 68.5). The stratification analysis by sex resulted in optimal thresholds of 0.416 for boys and 0.376 for girls. Additionally, when the data were stratified by age, the thresholds were 0.356 for children and 0.416 for adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide practical information for detecting high-risk groups and encouraging strength-related activities that may reduce the risk of MetS in children and adolescents. Background Despite acknowledging the influence of various lifestyle and metabolic risk factors on hypertension, it remains uncertain to identify the primary contributors and differentiate which modifiable risk factors mediate the causal effects of hypertension. We aimed to examine the hierarchical association of eight prominent lifestyle and metabolic risk factors, along with demographic variables, with hypertension in adults and to explore the mediating effects of modifiable metabolic risk factors on hypertension. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 46 low- and middle-income countries using the World Health Organization (WHO) STEPwise approach to non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance from 2002 to 2020. In a sample of 179535 non-pregnant adults, we assessed the weighted population-attributable risk percentages (PAR%) for hypertension associated with eight risk factors. Additionally, we investigated the mediating role of metabolic risk factors on the effects of lifestyle risk factors on hypertension. Results After adjusting for the sample weight in each country, 26.7% of participants had hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension was highest in those aged ≥65 years, with obesity-associated hypertension (45.7%) exceeding the rates for overweight (32.2%) and non-overweight individuals (18.2%). These eight risk factors collectively explain 83.7% of the PAR% associated with hypertension adjusted for the communal variance. Among the modifiable factors, obesity contributed to a weighted PAR% of 38.2%, while sedentary behaviour and low physical activity combined accounted for a weighted PAR% of 3.1%. Overweight/obesity played a predominant mediating role in the correlation between lifestyle risk factors and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with the indirect effect accounting for approximately 25–64% and 13–80% of the total effect, respectively. Conclusions These findings offer new insights into the modified risk factors associated with hypertension in adults in low- and middle-income countries, highlighting the crucial role of maintaining a normal body weight for the effective prevention and management of hypertension. Background Compliance with guidelines regarding monitoring of metabolic adverse effects induced by antipsychotics has been consistently low. We characterised and evaluated the quality of institutional quality improvement (QI) interventions designed to address disparities between guidelines and real-world practices. Furthermore, we assessed the impact of these interventions on the screening and management of metabolic risks for inpatients receiving treatment with antipsychotic medications. Methods We conducted a meta-analysis of institutional QI intervention studies aimed at improving antipsychotic-associated metabolic risk monitoring in hospitalised mental disease patients. Relevant studies were identified through searches conducted in the Embase and PubMed databases, as well as by reviewing previous reviews and meta-analyses. Quantitative analyses were performed, calculating odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the impact of QI programmes on guideline adherence in clinical practice. Results We identified 12 intervention studies (n=10128 and n=2667 patients in the preand post-intervention groups, respectively) and included them in our meta-analysis. QI interventions demonstrated effectiveness in bridging the guideline-practice gap in monitoring antipsychotic-induced metabolic adverse effects, as supported by the ORs and 95% CIs for post-intervention monitoring of plasma glucose, lipids, and blood pressure (BP) vs the pre-intervention period being OR=6.90 (95% CI=1.51–31.48), OR=5.39 (95% CI=4.01–7.24), and OR=4.81 (95% CI=1.23–18.79), respectively. Only 33.3% (4/12) of studies reported screening rates for all four metabolic parameters (plasma glucose, lipids, weight/body mass index (BMI), and BP). The median rates for metabolic screening of plasma glucose, lipids, and BP increased from 51.0–80.0%, 28.7–66.7%, and 91.7–95.8%, respectively. Up to 66.7% (8/12) of intervention studies lacked follow-up measures to treat or manage identified risks in hospitalised psychiatric patients, such as patient referrals, prescription of medications, and switching of antipsychotics. The odds of monitoring weight/BMI and glucose were greatest when QI programmes involved the participation of multidisciplinary health care professionals and patients, yielding OR=3.35 (95% CI=2.45–4.59) and OR=57.51 (95% CI=24.11–137.21), respectively. Conclusions Institutional QI interventions were effective in enhancing monitoring practices in alignment with established guidelines for metabolic risk screening among hospitalised patients with mental disorders maintained on antipsychotic medications. Future institutional QI programmes should incorporate multidisciplinary strategies involving patient engagement and extend their focus beyond screening to incorporate follow-up risk management strategies once risks have been identified. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a prevalent health condition in Taiwan that places individuals at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. Therefore, the identification of risk factors associated with MetS is crucial. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of uric acid and MetS in a Taiwanese community with a middle-aged and elderly population. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled residents aged 50–90 years living in one community. All of the subjects received a standardized personal interview, including a structured questionnaire, anthropometric measurements, and blood samples were collected for laboratory testing. MetS was defined as excess waist circumference, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high serum triglycerides, and low serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate uric acid tertiles associated with MetS. Results: A total of 400 subjects were enrolled in the analysis. The overall prevalence of MetS was 35.8%. The prevalence of MetS increased gradually with increasing serum uric acid levels (p value < 0.001). A significant association between uric acid and cardiometabolic risk factors was confirmed, with a Pearson's correlation coefficient for waist circumference of 0.30 (p < 0.001), a coefficient for systolic blood pressure of 0.13 (p = 0.01), a coefficient for triglycerides of 0.33 (p < 0.001), and a coefficient for high-density lipoprotein of −0.30 (p < 0.001). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of the high uric acid tertile level for MetS was 2.48 (95% CI = 1.31–4.71, p = 0.01). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for uric acid in predicting MetS was 0.621 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of MetS in our study population is high. High serum uric acid levels are independently associated with the presence of MetS among the middle-aged and elderly Taiwanese population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Several studies have highlighted the possible role of advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) in promotion of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, due to inconsistencies in this field, we aimed to quantitatively summarize the results of studies that evaluated the association between AOPPs, with MetS indices among adult population. Methods: In a systematic search from PubMed, Embase, and Scopus electronic databases until 15 August 2022 without language restriction, a total of 1225 articles were obtained. Finally, after duplicate removal of 632 articles and removing of 537 articles according to title/abstract, seven article was included in final meta-analysis. These articles all had observational design, were performed in adults aged more than 18 years old, and evaluated the association between circulating AOPPs and MetS. Results: In our meta-analysis, circulating AOPPs was 17.51 µmol/L higher in individuals with MetS versus individuals without MetS (WMD: 17.512; CI: 12.084, 22.939; p = 0.001). Gender, age, and sample size were recognized as possible heterogeneity sources in subgrouping and meta-regression. No evidence of publication bias was reported. Conclusion: According to the results of the current meta-analysis, higher circulating AOPPs concentrations might be associated with MetS risk among adults. Background: Metabolic syndrome represents aggregation of risk factors associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Assessing its incidence is an effective way for estimating the future burden of DM and ASCVD and understanding their secular trends and effect of public health measures on halting the evolution of risk factors. The present study aimed to estimate the incidence of metabolic syndrome and its predictors using a population-based cohort. Methods: A subset of Chandigarh Urban Diabetes Study cohort (n = 1023) without diabetes or metabolic syndrome was prospectively evaluated after a mean of 10.7 years. Metabolic syndrome was defined as per International Diabetes Federation criteria and diabetes as per American Diabetes Association standards. The incidence was calculated in 1000 person years, and multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the strength of association between incident metabolic syndrome and risk factors. Results: In the followed-up individuals (n = 303), incidence of metabolic syndrome was 32.1 per 1000 person years (95% CI 26.3–38.7 per 1000 person years). Amongst those developing metabolic syndrome, ≥4 components were present in 52% individuals, with low HDL-C being the most common abnormality. Those with metabolic syndrome had a five-time higher risk of diabetes (OR: 4.94; 95% CI: 2.27–9.96; p < 0.001) and a threefold higher risk of hypertension (OR: 2.67; 95% CI: 1.30–5.48; p = 0.006). Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a prevalent metabolic disorder with increasing prevalence attributed to extended life expectancy. This study aims to investigate MetS prevalence and its determinants in the East-Azerbaijan population. Methods: Conducted as a cross-sectional study within the East Azerbaijan region, this research is based on a major Lifestyle Promotion Project. The study encompasses 700 participants aged 15 to 65 years, representing the general population and selected using probability proportional to size multistage stratified cluster sampling. MetS diagnoses were conducted using the adult Panel III criteria. Data on socio-demographics, smoking status, and physical activity levels were collected through questionnaires. Results: Among participants, the mean age was 42.4 ± 12.38 years, and the mean body mass index was 27.69 ± 4.94 kg/m2. The MetS group exhibited higher mean age and body mass index compared to the non-MetS group (P < 0.001). The prevalence of MetS in the population was 34.2%, with higher rates in females (37.1%) compared to males (30.5%), though this difference wasn't statistically significant (P = 0.11). Notably, a substantial distinction was observed between the two groups regarding education levels (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The study reveals a significant association between increasing age and higher prevalence of MetS. Furthermore, lower educational levels were linked to an elevated prevalence of MetS. While other socio-demographic factors didn't demonstrate statistically significant relationships, these findings emphasize the importance of targeted interventions and education in mitigating MetS risks. Reaven or Metabolic syndrome has many well-recognized cardiovascular disease risk (CVD) factors. Choosing which one of these is primarily responsible for the accelerated atherogenesis that characterizes this syndrome is a complex task. The problem is further compounded by a need for more understanding of the cellular and molecular changes resulting from insulin resistance. We aim to revisit the current understanding of Reaven syndrome or Metabolic syndrome in light of the lifestyle transition. The growing burden of metabolic syndrome is associated with rising exposure to behavioural, dietary and metabolic risk factors. These risks are, in turn, linked to a caloriedense diet, physical inactivity, sedentary time, tobacco use and alcohol consumption. Moreover, the altered lifestyle has increased the risk of metabolic syndrome associated with CVD in the younger as well as non-obese population. This growing risk could be attributed to the increased insulin resistance due to lifestyle changes probably associated with technological advances reducing the physically active time. The study aims to analyze the relationship between central obesity and the risk of hypertension in obese adolescents, including both male and female subjects. The study was a retrospective observational study that utilized medical record data from a previous research project entitled "Polimorfisme Gen Adiponectin ADIPOQ +45 T>G, ADIPOQ – 11377 C>G with Adiponectin Levels in Obese Adolescents and Risk of Metabolic Syndrome." This data was obtained from research conducted on obese adolescents aged 13-18 years in junior and senior high schools in Surabaya and Sidoarjo who met the criteria. The sample comprised 140 obese adolescents, who were then categorized into two groups: those without central obesity and those with central obesity. Statistical data were analyzed using SPSS with the Chi Square test. There is a very strong and significant relationship between central obesity and the risk of hypertension in obese adolescents (p = 0.000; r = 0.373); central obesity and the risk of hypertension in obese male adolescents (p = 0.001; r = 0.587); and central obesity and the risk of hypertension in obese female adolescents (p = 0.003; r = 0.300). The study found a significant relationship between central obesity and hypertension risk in obese adolescents. Adolescents with central obesity were 3.6 times more likely to develop hypertension than those without. Male adolescents with central obesity were 6.5 times more likely to develop hypertension than those without. Purpose: To investigate the association between muscular strength and metabolic syndrome (MetS), with a specific focus on the role of weight status, using a nationally representative sample of US youth. Methods: The analysis included 409 boys and 415 girls from the 2011 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 12 and 18 years of age. The prevalence of MetS was defined using age- and sex-specific criteria for abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, blood pressure, fasting glucose, and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Strength was assessed via handgrip dynamometer and expressed as age- and sex-specific z scores of relative strength. Low strength was defined as a relative strength below the 25th percentile. Analyses controlled for age, sex, race/ethnicity, physical activity, and weight status. Results: The sample prevalence of MetS was approximately 5.3%. However, MetS prevalence was 18.5% in overweight/obese youth with low strength. The adjusted odds of MetS were 3.1 (95% confidence interval, 1.5–6.3, P <.001) times higher for overweight/obese youth with low strength versus sufficient strength. Conclusion: Muscular strength is predictive of adolescent MetS, specifically in those with unhealthy weight status. Approximately one in 5 overweight/obese youth with low strength had MetS. To investigate the metabolomic mechanisms by which changes in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels affect metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors and to provide a theoretical basis for the improvement of body metabolism via CRF in people with MetS risk factors, a comparative blood metabolomics study of individuals with varying levels of CRF and varying degrees of risk factors for MetS was conducted. Methods: Ninety subjects between the ages of 40 and 45 were enrolled, and they were categorized into low-MetS (LM ≤ two items) and high MetS (HM > three items) groups, as well as low- and high-CRF (LC, HC) and LCLM, LCLM, LCHM, and HCHM groups. Plasma was taken from the early morning abdominal venous blood. LC-MS was conducted using untargeted metabolomics technology, and the data were statistically and graphically evaluated using SPSS26.0 and R language. Results: (1) There were eight common differential metabolites in the HC vs. LC group as follows: methionine (↓), γ-aminobutyric acid (↑), 2-oxoglutatic acid (↑), arginine (↑), serine (↑), cis-aconitic acid (↑), glutamine (↓), and valine (↓); the HM vs. LM group are contrast. (2) In the HCHM vs. LCLM group, trends were observed in 2-oxoglutatic acid (↑), arginine (↑), serine (↑), cis-aconitic acid (↑), glutamine (↓), and valine (↓). (3) CRF and MetS risk factors jointly affect biological metabolic pathways such as arginine biosynthesis, TCA cycle, cysteine and methionine metabolism, glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism. Conclusion: The eight common differential metabolites can serve as potential biomarkers for distinguishing individuals with different CRF levels and varying degrees of MetS risk factors. Increasing CRF levels may potentially mitigate MetS risk factors, as higher CRF levels are associated with reduced MetS risk.

Background: The health benefits of dietary polyphenol intake (DPI) including improved lipid profiles, blood pressure, insulin resistance, and reduced systemic inflammation has revealed previously. However, the results of numerous studies are not consistent and it seems that these health effects are attributed to some of DPI. In the current research, we evaluated the health benefits of DPI on metabolic markers and glycemic markers among overweight and obese individuals. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 487 individuals with overweight and obesity were participated. Dietary intake was assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and the amount of dietary polyphenol intake were calculated based on the information derived from Phenol-Explorer database (www.phenolexplorer.eu/contents). Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to measure body composition. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured by sphygmomanometer. Biochemical assays including fasting blood sugar, insulin and serum lipids' concentrations were measured by enzymatic methods. Results: According to our results, males were more likely to be at the highest tertile of DPI (P = 0.04). Also, those at the highest tertile of DPI had higher fat free mass and physical activity level (P < 0.05). Lower TG level in highest tertile of DPI in crude model was also observed, but, it lost its significant threshold after adjustment for confounders. Subjects at the second tertile of DPI were more likely to have lower systolic blood pressure in the sex and age adjusted model [OR = 0.970; CI = 0.940-1.000; P = 0.049]. For other biochemical variables, no significant association was observed. Conclusion: In the current study, total dietary polyphenol intake was associated with lower SBP among overweight and obese individuals. Several studies have examined the association between CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism with cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to investigate the interactions between rs1761667 polymorphism and dietary patterns on the cardiometabolic risk factors and the risk of MetS in apparently healthy individuals aged 20–70 years. Food consumption data were acquired using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis. CD36 rs1761667 was genotyped by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The gene–diet interaction was detected by the general linear model or logistic regression. Significant or marginally significant interactions were observed between healthy dietary pattern (HDP) and CD36 rs1761667 on weight (P = 0·006), BMI (P = 0·009), waist circumference (P = 0·005), hip circumference (P = 0·06), body muscle percentage (P = 0·02), body fat percentage (P = 0·09), TAG-glucose index (P = 0·057), atherogenic index of plasma (P = 0·07), the risk of MetS (P = 0·02), risk of abdominal obesity (P = 0·02) and elevated blood pressure (P = 0·07). Besides, a gene–diet interaction was detected between the traditional dietary pattern and rs1761667 variants on odds of hypertriglyceridaemia (P = 0·02). The adherence to HDP was associated with a lower weight, BMI and higher odds of HDL-cholesterol only in A-allele carriers. In conclusion, adherence to HDP (a diet with high fibre, fish and dairy products) can be more effective on some cardiometabolic risk factors and risk of MetS components in the A-allele carrier than the GG genotype of rs1761667 polymorphism. Aim: To identify and map out existing nurse‐led models of care for treatment and prevention of metabolic syndrome in primary care settings. Design: A scoping review. Methods: Conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology. Data Sources: A search of the databases PubMed, CINAHL Complete, Cochrane Library, Scopus, handsearch and a grey literature search was conducted in June 2022 and updated in March 2023. Results: Title and abstract screening was performed on 926 articles resulting in 40 articles for full text screening. Full text screening yielded seven articles that met inclusion criteria. Conclusion: Additional research is needed on nursing models of care to prevent and treat metabolic syndrome. Future studies should concentrate on rigour with clearly defined objective inclusion criteria. Implications to Clinical Practice: This review contributes a synthesis of the evidence on nurse‐led models for metabolic syndrome in primary care. Impact: This scoping review addresses metabolic syndrome, the precursor to non‐communicable disease. The review mapped the evidence for nurse‐led models of care for metabolic syndrome in the primary care setting. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the severity of alopecia areata (AA) associations with metabolic syndrome, body composition evaluated by bioimpedance techniques, and arterial stiffness based on pulse-wave velocity analysis. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on patients referred to AA Clinic at Razi Hospital in 2021 and 2022. Patients with AA with the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score above 20% and receiving no systemic therapy were included. Patient demographic and clinical information, symptoms of metabolic syndrome, and bioimpedance factors were collected, and the relationship between disease severity, metabolic syndrome, and bioimpedance indicators was evaluated. Results: In this study, 59 patients were examined, with 26 (44.07%) being female and 33 (55.93%) being male. The mean age of the patients was 37.42 years (standard deviation [SD] =11.28). The severity of the disease was assessed using the SALT score, with the mean severity in terms of the percentage being 69.83% (SD = 28.57%). In the regression model, SALT score was independently related to the severity of vascular stiffness after adjusting for the effect of other variables (beta = 0.033, 95% CI = 0.009-0.057, P = 0.046). Moreover, SALT score was significantly related to metabolic syndrome after adjusting for the effect of other variables (OR = 1.035, 95% CI = 1.012-1.059, P = 0.002). Conclusion: This study found that AA severity is associated with a higher chance of having metabolic syndrome and arterial stiffness which may lead to cardiovascular diseases in patients with AA, and screening patients regarding cardiometabolic diseases is mandated. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) consists of interconnected factors responsible for increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Early identification and treatment of components of MS leads to improved cardiovascular outcomes. Aims: To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adults >18 years of age and to study the various socio-demographic and behavioral factors associated with MS. Methods and Material: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 280 adults of >18 years in a rural area of Dakshina Kannada district. Probability proportional to size and random sampling was used to select the study participants. Data was collected by interviews, anthropometry, blood investigations. Results: Prevalence of MS was 33.9% and majority were females (71.8%). The mean age was 49.35 (±15.22) years. The prevalence (raised levels/on treatment) of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia were 56.79% (systolic), 38.93% (diastolic), 38.57% (raised triglycerides), and 45% respectively. Majority of the subjects were obese (52.9%). Participants of 18–49 years age group had 2.30 times higher odds of having MS than ≥50 years age group (P value < 0.001). Female gender and low socio-economic status had 1.49- and 1.31-times higher odds of having MS respectively. Family history of diabetes and presence of co-morbidities had 1.20- and 1.02-times higher odds of developing MS. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of MS in rural areas. BACKGROUND: The food system accounts for ~40% of human-generated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Meanwhile, daily diet selection also impacts human nutrition status and health. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to use the alternate Mediterranean Diet (aMED) score to evaluate the quality of a low-GHG emission diet and the association with risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS: A total of 41,659 healthy participants without MetS 40 y of age or older were selected from the Health Examinees Study, an ongoing cohort study in South Korea from 2004. A dietary GHG emissions database was compiled following a national project and literature review. MetS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program. The participants were grouped into quintiles based on 2,000 kcal–standardized daily diet-GHG emissions (Q1: the lowest energy-adjusted diet-GHG emissions). A multivariable logistic regression model was used to analyze the risk for MetS at follow-up. The aMED score was used to assess the diet quality of the different diet-related GHG emission groups. RESULTS: Females with lower energy-adjusted diet-related GHG emissions had significantly lower risks of developing MetS (푝=0.0043) than those with the highest energy-adjusted diet-related GHG emissions. In addition, the Q1 group, in comparison with the other groups, had a higher aMED score (3.02 for males and 3.00 for females), which indicated that the participants in this group had a diet that more closely matched the Mediterranean diet. DISCUSSION: These findings provide a reference for dietary guidance and other policies aimed toward improving dietary intake and reducing diet-related GHG emissions in South Korea and worldwide. Obesity is a complex and largely preventable disease that is an enormous burden to patient health and to the healthcare system. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) patients and their healthcare providers should be aware of their personal risks and causes of weight gain and obesity. Sensitive, comprehensive, and competent LGBTQ preventive care and treatment are needed to address the needs of this population, improve patient outcomes, and reduce healthcare inequalities. Research is needed to further evaluate the confluence of obesity and metabolic risk factors in LGBTQ patients, and to develop prevention and treatment strategies to reduce the risk for obesity-related comorbidities, chronic disease, and death. Objective: To identify the determinants and risks associated with developing hypertension and metabolic syndrome in the first year postpartum in women who experienced preeclampsia. Methods: A cohort study was conducted, involving women who had experienced preeclampsia (PE) recently. The control group was women with the same characteristics but a healthy pregnancy. The variables analyzed were somatometry, disease history, pre-pregnancy body mass index (Pre-BMI), and Third Adult Treatment Panel updated (ATP III) metabolic syndrome (MS) data (blood pressure, obesity, triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins, and fasting glucose). These variables were measured at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum. Results: Women with a history of PE exhibited higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure than women without PE. The risk of developing isolated diastolic arterial hypertension at 3 and 12 months of follow-up was two to eight times greater in women with a history of PE. Factors associated with having higher blood pressure levels were preeclampsia, insulin resistance, age, and BMI. Neither the pre-BMI index nor gestational weight gain (GWG) had any effect on blood pressure in any of the three assessments. Women with preeclampsia had a 5- to 8-fold increased risk of developing MS (which could be explained not only by the history of preeclampsia but also by the history of pre-pregnancy obesity). However, PE was not identified as a risk factor at the six-month evaluation and was only explained by pre-pregnancy obesity and overweight. Conclusions: Obesity and overweight, as well as preeclampsia, were strongly associated with the development of hypertension and metabolic syndrome during the first year following childbirth. Aims. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects approximately one-third of the global population. Visit-to-visit variability of blood pressure (VVV-BP) constitutes a substantial risk factor for numerous chronic conditions. Thus, this study aimed to assess the relationship between VVV-BP and MetS and identify potential moderating factors between these. Methods. Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative study. Multiple logistic regression analyses were utilized to explore the association between VVV-BP and MetS while incorporating moderation analyses. MetS was defined according to the criteria outlined in the Joint Interim Statement. VVV-BP was expressed by the standard deviation, coefficient of variation, average real variability, and root mean square error. Results. Individuals with the highest levels of VVV of systolic blood pressure (SBP) exhibited a 70% increased risk of MetS compared to those with the lowest levels (OR = 1.70, 95% CI = 1.31–2.21). In addition, they had a 41% increased risk of VVV of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (OR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.09–1.81). Notably, weight change status significantly influenced the relationship between VVV-BP and MetS (Pinteraction = 0.01). Conclusions. VVV-BP is a significant contributor to the risk of developing MetS. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between periodontitis severity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) through systematic review, registered in PROSPERO: CRD42021232120. Selected articles were independently chosen by three reviewers from six databases, including using article reference lists, up until March 2022. Eligible studies were observational, without language limitation, and in subjects aged at least 18 years. The methodological quality of selected studies was assessed using the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale. Random effects models calculated summary measurements (odds ratio‐OR, 95% confidence interval, 95%CI). The I2 test evaluated the statistical heterogeneity of the data. Sensitivity, subgroup, and meta‐regression analyses were performed. For the reliability of evidence, the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations tool was used. A total of 2133 records were identified, and 14 studies were included comprising 24,567 participants. The summary odds ratio showed a positive association between individuals with moderate (ORadjusted = 1.26; 95%CI = 2.10–5.37; I2 = 45.85%), and severe periodontitis (ORadjusted = 1.50; 95%CI:1.28–1.71; I2 = 56.46%), and MetS. Subgroup and meta‐regression analyses showed that study effect size was influenced by year of publication, study design, and MetS diagnostic criteria, contributing to inter‐study variability. Background: The incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) dramatically increases among middle-aged and elderly populations in China, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease events and mortality. Methods: This survey was based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study baseline data in 2011 and follow-up data in 2015. 4,602 participants without MetS at baseline were included in the final analysis. The diagnosis of MetS was based on the Chinese guidelines. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to examine the association of serum uric acid quartiles, or continuous serum uric acid with the risk of incident MetS. Restricted cubic spline regression models were used to explore the dose-response relationship between serum uric acid levels and MetS incidence. Results: Serum uric acid quartiles were associated with an increased risk of MetS incidence (p for trend = 0.03), and the adjusted RRs (95% CI) were 1.17 (0.77, 1.75), 1.51 (1.01, 2.24) and 1.54 (1.01, 2.33) in quartiles 2-4, respectively. In particular, the association was more evident among women. The multivariable-adjusted RR for 1 mg/dL in serum uric acid level was 1.17 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.34) for MetS incidence. In addition, the restricted cubic splines showed that higher serum uric acid levels were dose- response associated with increased MetS incidence risk (p for linear trend < 0.001). Background and Aims: There has been no previous investigation into the relationship between serum β-Carotene levels and metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia. This research aims to explore the association between schizophrenia, metabolic syndrome, and serum β-Carotene levels. Specifically, this study addresses this knowledge gap and examines whether lower serum β-Carotene levels are associated with an increased risk for metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia. Methods and Results: The present study involved 38 patients with schizophrenia (n = 38). We collected demographic data, anthropometric measurements, blood samples for lipid panels, sugar levels, and serum β-Carotene levels, as well as participant responses to food frequency questionnaires. Results revealed the median serum β-Carotene was 0.87 (range: 0.69–1.14 μmol/L). The median metabolic syndrome Z-score using waist circumference was 0.13 (range: −1.10–2.39). Pairwise Spearman's correlation between metabolic syndrome Z-score versus β-Carotene showed a rho = −0.56, P < 0.001 for the overall sample. Linear regression between metabolic syndrome Z-score as a dependent variable and serum β-Carotene as an independent variable showed a regression coefficient of −3.11, P < 0.001. Conclusion: The findings of this study offer suggestive evidence of a statistically significant positive correlation between reduced serum β-Carotene levels in individuals with schizophrenia and a heightened global risk of developing metabolic syndrome. This preliminary study has implications for the management of schizophrenia patients, suggesting that patients' serum levels of β-Carotene be periodically checked and referrals made to dieticians as necessary. Preterm birth (before 37 completed weeks of gestation) is a global health problem, remaining the main reason for neonatal mortality and morbidity. Improvements in perinatal and neonatal care in recent decades have been associated with a higher survival rate of extremely preterm infants, leading to a higher risk of long-term sequelae in this population throughout life. Numerous surveillance programs for formerly premature infants continue to focus on neurodevelopmental disorders, while long-term assessment of the impact of preterm birth and low birth weight on child growth and the associated risk of cardiovascular disease in young adults is equally necessary. This review will discuss the influence of prematurity and low birth weight on childhood growth and cardiovascular risk in children, adolescents and young adults. The risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders is increased in adult preterm survivors. In early childhood, preterm infants may show elevated blood pressure, weakened vascular growth, augmented peripheral vascular resistance and cardiomyocyte remodeling. Increased weight gain during the early postnatal period may influence later body composition, promote obesity and impair cardiovascular results. These adverse metabolic alterations contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular incidents, adult hypertension and diabetes. Preterm-born children and those with fetal growth restriction (FGR) who demonstrate rapid changes in their weight percentile should remain under surveillance with blood pressure monitoring. A better understanding of lifelong health outcomes of preterm-born individuals is crucial for developing strategies to prevent cardiovascular sequelae and may be the basis for future research to provide effective interventions. Background: The predisposition of humans to metabolic syndrome is affected by many factors, including diet and lifestyle. Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) are a set of carbohydrates that are fermented by gut microbiota. In animal studies, supplementation with FODMAP-rich diets as prebiotics can alter body composition and gut microbiota. This study evaluates any relationship between FODMAP and metabolic syndrome risk factors among adults with metabolic syndrome in Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on sociodemographic information from 347 overweight and obese participants selected from outpatient clinics through public declaration. Participants body composition and anthropometric measures were also determined. A validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) with 168 questions was used to collect dietary data. Biochemical parameters, including serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting serum glucose (FSG), and insulin levels, were determined by enzymatic methods. In addition, the Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI) were calculated. Results: In moderate FODMAP and low FODMAP groups, lower waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and higher fat-free mass (FFM) were achieved in higher tertiles. In high FODMAP groups, higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) was shown in the higher tertile (P < 0.05). Higher insulin, HOMA-IR, and lower QUICKI in the second tertile of the high FODMAP group were also observed. Background: In this prospective cohort study, we aimed to evaluate the association between dietary carbohydrates, whole grains, refined grains, and simple sugar with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and assess the effect of weight change on these associations. Methods: This study was conducted within the framework of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). We included 1915 healthy participants with complete demographic, anthropometric and dietary measurements, among whom 591 developed MetS during 8.9 years of follow-up. Intake of dietary carbohydrates, whole grains, refined grains, and simple sugar was assessed with a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Multivariable adjusted Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for MetS events across tertiles of dietary variables. Using joint classification, the effect of weight change on the association between dietary variables and risk of MetS was assessed by Cox regression. Results: Carbohydrate intake was not associated with the risk of MetS in multivariable-adjusted models. Whole grains intake was inversely associated with the risk of MetS (HR: 0.78, CI: 0.63–0.98), while this association disappeared after adjustment for weight change. The risk of MetS increased by 11% (1.11, 1.09–1.14) for each 3% energy increment from simple sugar, and by 5% (1.05, 1.03–1.08) for each 1 serving/day increment in refined grains. Consumption of refined grains increased the risk of MetS; an effect modification of this association was found by weight change. Among subjects with weight loss, intake of refined grains < median intake decreased the risk of MetS (0.59, 0.41–0.87). However, consumption of refined grains ≥ median intake increased the risk of MetS in individuals with weight gain (1.47, 1.08–2.01). Simple sugar was positively associated with an increased risk of MetS, after adjustment for weight change (3.00, 2.37–3.82). In joint classification, intake of simple sugar greater than median intake increased the risk of MetS, independent of weight change. Conclusion: Our findings suggest an effect modification by weight change on the association between carbohydrates, and refined grains intake and the risk of MetS. Weight loss along with lower consumption of carbohydrates, and refined grains reduced the risk of MetS. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with a history of gestational diabetes (GDM), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and preterm birth (PTB), but it is unclear whether this association is due to the pregnancy complication(s) or prepregnancy/early pregnancy confounders. The study examines the association of GDM, HDP, and PTB with MetS 2–7 years later, independent of early pregnancy factors. Materials and Methods: Large, diverse cohort of nulliparous pregnant people with singleton gestations enrolled during their first trimester and who attended a follow-up study visit 2–7 years after delivery. The longitudinal cohort was recruited from eight medical centers across the United States. Using standardized protocols, anthropometry, biospecimens, and surveys were collected at study visits and pregnancy outcomes were abstracted from medical records. We estimated the relative risk of prevalent MetS at the follow-up study visit for participants with GDM, HDP, or PTB (vs. no complications), adjusting for early pregnancy age, body mass index, self-reported race/ethnicity, insurance type, and smoking status. Results: Of 4,402 participants, 738 (16.8%) had MetS at follow-up: 13.1% (441/3,365) among those with no complications, and 27.9% (290/1,002) among those with complications. MetS occurred in 39.0% of GDM (73/187, adjusted relative risk [aRR] = 1.75; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.42–2.16); 29.2% of HDP (176/603, aRR = 1.49; 95% CI 1.27–1.75); and 29.7% of PTB (113/380, aRR = 1.78; 95% CI 1.49–2.12). Those who had both HDP and PTB (n = 113) had an aRR = 1.95 (95% CI 1.50–2.54). Conclusions: People whose pregnancies were complicated by GDM, HDP, or PTB are at a higher risk of MetS within 2–7 years after delivery, independent of early pregnancy risk factors. Objective: Our objective was to evaluate the association of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with each component of metabolic syndrome (MS), and determine which component plays the major risk for developing BPH. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was performed on 203 male patients aged over 50, who came to the internal medicine outpatient clinics just for a check-up with/without any known disease. Forty-three of them were healthy control patients and the rest had only 1 criterion of MS. They were searched for the presence of BPH. Results: BPH prevalence ranged between 45.5-65.6% in the subgroups, there was no statistically significant difference in the presence of BPH between these groups. There was a slight positive correlation between glucose level and prostate volume. Triglyceride levels were positively correlated with Qmax and negatively correlated with the grade of hypertrophy. There was also a slight positive correlation between systolic blood pressure and prostate volumes, grade of hypertrophy, and IPSS scores. Conclusion: BPH prevalence was not different between MS components. We concluded that none of the MS components increase the occurrence of BPH by itself but when those metabolic disorders come together and form a syndrome, the prevalence of BPH increases. Background: Vitiligo is nowadays considered a systemic disease owing to its complex, multifactorial pathogenesis. A possible association of vitiligo with metabolic syndrome as well as insulin resistance has been gaining interest recently. Shared factors in pathogenesis are being proposed as the reason for this interesting association. Aim: We undertook this study to look for the association of vitiligo and its severity with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in a South Indian population. Methods: This was a single-center cross-sectional analytical study conducted among patients with vitiligo. Hundred patients with non-segmental vitiligo fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in this study after obtaining informed consent. A detailed history was elicited, and a clinical examination was done, including anthropometric measurements and the calculation of the Vitiligo Area Severity Index (VASI). Fasting blood samples were collected to test for blood glucose, lipid profile, serum insulin, and TSH. Insulin resistance was calculated using the Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index, and metabolic syndrome was diagnosed based on revised NCEP-ATP III criteria. Results: Out of the 100 patients with non-segmental vitiligo enrolled in the study, 49 had metabolic syndrome. 31% patients had hyperglycemia, 28% had hypertension, and 28% had hyperlipidemia. Seventy-one patients had low HDL levels, and 74 had a high waist circumference. Fasting insulin levels were found to be higher than normal in 13 patients, while insulin resistance was present in 70 patients. However, there was no significant association between VASI scores and fasting insulin levels (Mann-Whitney U test, P=0.7), insulin resistance (P=0.6), or metabolic syndrome (Chi-square test, P=0.4). Also, there was no significant association between metabolic syndrome and duration of vitiligo (Mann-Whitney U test, P=0.2) or any clinical type of vitiligo (Chi-square test, P=0.6). Conclusion: In our study, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance was found to be significantly higher in vitiligo patients compared to the normal population. Background: Higher dietary quality, including increased vegetable consumption, was associated with a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, specific vegetable consumption in the development of MetS remains obscure. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between starchy and non-starchy vegetables and MetS. Methods: Secondary data analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999–2018). MetS was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult treatment Panel III (NCEP ATPIII) and dietary consumption was assessed by trained staff using two 24-h diet recall methods. Weighted logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were performed to further investigate specific vegetable subtypes and MetS. Results: This research enrolled 24,646 individuals (11,725 females and 12,921 males), with an average age of 45.84 ± 0.23 years. Approximately 15,828(64.22%) participants were defined to be with non-MetS and 8818(35.78%) were with MetS. Both total starchy vegetables and potatoes were associated with increased MetS risk, with the corresponding OR per standard deviation (SD) (95%CI, p-trend) being 1.06(1.02–1.11, p-trend = 0.028) and 1.08(1.04–1.13, p-trend = 0.011), respectively. However, an inverse correlation was found between dark-green vegetables and MetS, and the OR per SD (95%CI, p-trend) was 0.93(0.90–0.97, p-trend = 0.010). Subgroup analyses showed that the positive associations of starchy vegetables and potatoes on MetS risk were stronger in non-Hispanic White participants (p for interaction < 0.050). Conclusion: Total starchy vegetables and white potatoes were both associated with an increased risk of MetS, while consumption of dark-green vegetables was negatively associated with MetS risk. Simple Summary: The global incidence of metabolic syndrome is on the rise, and its association with various types of cancer has been established. However, research into an association between metabolic syndrome and the incidence of head and neck cancer has been relatively limited. This population-based study aimed to report on the association of metabolic syndrome with head and neck cancer and individual subtypes of cancers. The study found that participants with metabolic syndrome exhibited a higher risk of developing head and neck cancer, particularly oral cavity and laryngeal cancers. The elevated levels of fasting glucose and blood pressure present in individuals with metabolic syndrome were independently associated with an increased risk of head and neck cancer. The results of this study could assist with etiological investigations and prevention strategies. The aim of this national population-based retrospective study was to analyze the relationship between MetS and the incidence of HNC. In this Korean population-based cohort study, 9,598,085 subjects above the age of 20 were monitored from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2018. In the study population, a total of 10,732 individuals were newly diagnosed with HNC during the 10-year follow-up. The hazard ratio (HR), after adjusting for age, gender, smoking status, alcohol intake, and exercise, indicated that participants with MetS were at a 1.06-fold (95% CI: 1.01–1.10) higher risk of having HNC than those without MetS. Participants with MetS showed an increased risk of developing oral cavity cancer (HR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.03–1.23) and laryngeal cancer (HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.09–1.27). Among the components of MetS, elevated fasting glucose (HR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.00–1.08) and elevated blood pressure (HR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.04–1.13) were significantly associated with an increased HR for HNC in an adjusted multivariable model. The association between HNC and MetS remained significant even among individuals who had never smoked or were ex-smokers (HR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.04–1.15), as well as those who did not drink or were mild drinkers (HR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.02–1.12). The findings of this cohort study suggest MetS was associated with an increased risk for some types of HNCs. Background: Low-grade inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and measuring levels of inflammatory molecules, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), may indicate Mets progression. Serum uric acid (SUA) has also been identified as an independent risk factor for MetS. This study aimed to investigate the association between MetS components and levels of serum hs-CRP and SUA using representative and reliable data for the Korean population. Methods: This study used the data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016–2018, a cross-sectional and nationally representative survey performed by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results: We analysed the data of 13,454 individuals. High hs-CRP levels were observed in 1,164 (8.7%) subjects while 3,296 (24.5%) subjects had high SUA levels. Moreover, hs-CRP was negatively correlated with serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (OR, 1.703; 95% CI, 1.431–2.027). When stratified by sex, this trend remained, but the correlation was stronger in women than in men. Furthermore, high SUA levels were significantly associated with hypertension (HTN) (OR, 1.399; 95% CI, 1.210–1.616), hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 1.735; 95% CI, 1.486–2.026), and low HDL (OR, 1.257; 95% CI, 1.106–1.429), but not with diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR, 0.478; 95% CI, 0.382–0.597). When grouped by sex, this trend remained, however, all MetS components were found to be more prevalent in women with high SUA. Conclusions: Our findings showed that low HDL was more prevalent in subjects with high hs-CRP, and high SUA levels were observed in subjects with HTN, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL. North Korean Refugees (NKRs) undergo defection, and this has been shown to impact their current health status in South Korea. However, little is understood about how the defection process is related to metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study regarded the defection process to be a quasi-measurement of traumatic experience and investigated whether defection was a risk factor for MetS among NKRs living in South Korea. This cross-sectional study obtained data from the Korea University Anam Hospital in Seoul. NKRs (N = 847) voluntarily completed questionnaires and underwent at least one medical examination between October 2008 and July 2021. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate whether the number of countries transited by NKRs was associated with MetS by controlling for covariates. The prevalence of MetS among male and female NKRs in South Korea was 12.3% and 13.3%, respectively. The highest prevalence of MetS (33.4%) was among NKRs who had transited two countries. The number of months in transit countries (mean: 49.9 ± 51.7) and period of residence in South Korea (mean: 40.9 ± 40.9 months) were also considered. NKRs who transited three countries had a higher probability of MetS (odds ratio [OR] 2.660, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.161–6.097) than those who travelled directly to South Korea. NKRs who transited three countries and had only resided in South Korea for a short period had a higher probability of MetS (OR 3.424, 95% CI 1.149–10.208) than those who have lived in South Korea for a longer period. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between psychosocial work exposure and the presence of biological and imaging biomarkers of cardiovascular disease. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a sub-cohort of the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS). Psychosocial exposure was evaluated with the job demand–control model, and analysed according to the standard categorization: high strain, active, passive and low strain (reference). Biomarkers (blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, coronary artery calcification (CAC) and metabolic syndrome) were measured, or derived through measurements, from clinical examinations. Gender-specific prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with regression models and adjusted for age, education, smoking, physical activity, general life stress and body mass index (BMI). Results: The analyses included 3882 participants (52.5% women). High strain (high demands–low control) was linked to increased PR for low HDL cholesterol in women, adjusted for all covariates (PR 1.76; 95% CI 1.25–2.48). High strain was also related to moderately increased PR for metabolic syndrome in men, after adjustments for all covariates except BMI (PR 1.25; 95% CI 1.02–1.52). In addition, passive work (low demands–low control) was associated with diastolic hypertension in women (fully adjusted: PR 1.29; 95% CI 1.05–1.59). All relationships between psychosocial factors and LDL cholesterol or CAC (both genders), or hypertension (men), were non-significant. Conclusions: Poor psychosocial job conditions was associated with the presence of low HDL cholesterol and diastolic hypertension in women, and metabolic syndrome in men. This study aimed to identify body mass index (BMI) trajectories from childhood and their relationships with depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms in young adulthood. A total of 687 children aged 4–18 years were recruited from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. Throughout 18 years of follow‐up, BMI was measured every 3 years for a maximum of 6 data points. Participants completed the depression, anxiety, and stress scale in their young adulthood (aged 22–36). The group‐based trajectory modelling was applied to identify BMI patterns. The logistic regression model was used to assess the association between BMI trajectories and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms in adulthood. Two BMI trajectories were identified from childhood to young adulthood: healthy weight (HW = 69.6%) and persistent increasing overweight/obesity (PIO = 30.4%). After adjusting for potential confounders, compared with the HW group, men in the PIO group were more likely to experience higher stress levels (OR: 1.62, 95% CI: 0.99–2.63; p = 0.05). No significant association was observed between the PIO trajectory and depression and anxiety among both sexes and stress symptoms in females. Financial stress has been linked to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, yet, it remains unclear whether suboptimal sleep duration and physical inactivity are the adaptive responses to financial stress or effect modifiers in the association between financial stress and metabolic syndrome. Hence, this study aims to examine whether physical activity and sleep duration mediate or moderate the bivariate association between financial stress and metabolic syndrome. A prospective secondary analysis was conducted using data from the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study (N = 445, mean [SD] age = 64 [7] years). Baseline moderation effect was examined using subgroup analysis with model constraints; prospective mediation model was examined using bias‐corrected bootstrap confidence intervals. Results indicate that participants with higher financial stress were less likely to meet physical activity and sleep recommendations. Baseline moderation analysis indicates that meeting current recommendations of sleep duration and physical activity attenuated the association between financial stress and metabolic syndrome. In the prospective mediation analysis, weekly physical activity levels partially mediated the relationship between financial stress and metabolic syndrome, but sleep duration did not mediate this relationship. In conclusion, the joint effect of optimal sleep duration and physical activity disassociates financial stress from the risk of metabolic syndrome. Future interventions addressing metabolic risk might achieve better outcomes if clinicians and researchers factor in the behavioral adaptation of physical inactivity in financially stressed adults (Clinical Trial Registration: NCT00005557). Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a serious concern among postmenopausal women which predisposes them to cardiovascular and cognitive disorders. Healthful diet and exercise training have been essential strategies to prevent the progress of MetS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with a native potential probiotic and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for 8 weeks on retention of associative memory in rats with ovariectomy- induced metabolic syndrome. Method: Thirty-two female ovariectomized Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 8/group): Control (OVX + Veh), exercise (OVX + Exe), probiotic (OVX + Pro), exercise with probiotic (OVX + Exe + Pro). One sham surgery group was included as a control group. Animals received 8 weeks interventions, and then were tested in a step through passive avoidance learning and memory paradigm, to assess long term memory. Then serum levels of adiponectin, insulin and glucose were measured by ELISA and colorimetry respectively. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney and also One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Eight weeks of HIIT and probiotic supplementation caused an increase in step through latency and shortening of total time spent in the dark compartment in OVX + Exe + Pro group compared with OVX + Veh group. Also significant increase in serum adiponectin levels, in parallel with a reduction in glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR were achieved by the group of OVX + Exe + Pro. Conclusion: The present study indicates that HIIT combined with probiotics supplementation for 8 weeks effectively improves associative memory in MetS model of rats partly via improving insulin sensitivity and adiponectin level. Aim was to examine associations among metabolic health, weight status, and various physical fitness (PF) components in 1744 Japanese adolescents aged 13–14. Anthropometric measurements and PF tests (20 m shuttle run test [20mSRT], handgrip strength/body mass [HG], standing long jump [SLJ], and sit ups [SU]) were administered. The bottom sex-specific quintile of PF indicated "low fit". Participants were classified as non-overweight (non-OW) or overweight/obese (OW) according to the International Obesity Task Force. Clustered metabolic risk was defined as the sum of Z scores for mean arterial pressure, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and HbA1c, divided by three, and ≥ 1 SD. Combination of weight status and scores for HG or SU were additively associated with clustered metabolic risk. Compared with the non-OW-moderate-high fit group, the OW-low HG group was 3.05 (95%CI: 1.88–4.97) times more likely to have clustered metabolic risk although risk was not significantly elevated in the OW-moderate-high HG group (1.52 [95%CI: 0.88–2.62]). A similar association was observed between OW and low SU scores but not between OW and low 20mSRT or SLJ scores. Adolescents with OW and moderate-high HG or SU scores had a lower prevalence of an unfavourable metabolic state than those with OW and low HG or SU results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of adiposity-based chronic disease (ABCD) and its association with anthropometric indices in the Mexican population. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 514 adults seen at a clinical research unit. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology/AACE/ACE criteria were used to diagnose ABCD by first identifying subjects with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and those with BMI of 23–24·9 kg/m2 and waist circumference ≥ 80 cm in women or ≥ 90 cm in men. The presence of metabolic and clinical complications associated with adiposity, such as factors related to metabolic syndrome, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia and arterial hypertension, were subsequently evaluated. Anthropometric indices related to cardiometabolic risk factors were then determined. The results showed the prevalence of ABCD was 87·4 % in total, 91·5 % in men and 86 % in women. The prevalence of ABCD stage 0 was 2·4 %, stage 1 was 33·7 % and stage 2 was 51·3 %. The prevalence of obesity according to BMI was 57·6 %. The waist/hip circumference index (prevalence ratio (PR) = 7·57; 95 % CI 1·52, 37·5) and the conicity index (PR = 3·46; 95 % CI 1·34, 8·93) were better predictors of ABCD, while appendicular skeletal mass % and skeletal muscle mass % decreased the risk of developing ABCD (PR = 0·93; 95 % CI 0·90, 0·96; and PR = 0·95; 95 % CI 0·93, 0·98). In conclusion, the prevalence of ABCD in our study was 87·4 %. This prevalence increased with age. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a set of conditions that occur together and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Previous studies have linked a gluten-free diet (GFD) to obesity and MetS in some populations. However, others have suggested that weight gain is usually regulated only in underweight individuals with celiac disease (CD). Owing to the lack of sufficient data and the importance of GFD in controlling cardiovascular disease, we surveyed the prevalence of MetS and its components before and after a year of GFD in patients referred to the main celiac clinic in southern Iran. Methods: This was a repeated cross-sectional study conducted on 69 patients with a definite diagnosis of cardiovascular disease who were on follow-up and registered at the Shiraz Celiac Clinic. Demographic, anthropometric, and laboratory measurements at the time of diagnosis and one year after the GFD were extracted from their medical records. Results: The participants' mean age was 35.53, and 68.1% were women. The prevalence of MetS increased from 5.8% to 11.6% after a year of the GFD; however, this increase was not statistically significant. Waist circumference (WC) and serum triglyceride levels were significantly elevated during the study period. Conclusion: A GFD may contribute to the development of MetS in patients with cardiovascular disease; however, the rate of MetS is still lower than that in the general population.
