Market fragmentation has resulted in a multitude of network and cloud/data center operators, each focused on different countries, regions and technologies. This makes it difficult and costly to create infrastructure services spanning multiple domains, such as virtual connectivity or compute resources. In this article, we discuss the goals and work being done within the 5GEx (5G Exchange) project in realising a Europe-wide multi-domain platform. This platform aims at enabling cross-domain orchestration of services over multiple administrations or over multi-domain single administrations in the context of emerging 5G networking. The 5GEx vision is based on introducing a unification via network function virtualisation/software-defined networking compatible multi-domain orchestration for networks, clouds and services. We describe the motivation and 5GEx vision, the adopted architecture and the next steps in terms of implementation and experimentation. Service meshes factor out code dealing with inter-micro-service communication. The overall resilience of a cloud application is improved if constituent micro-services return stale data, instead of no data at all. This paper proposes and implements application agnostic caching for micro services. While caching is widely employed for serving web service traffic, its usage in inter-micro-service communication is lacking. Micro-services responses are highly dynamic, which requires carefully choosing adaptive time-to-life caching algorithms. Our approach is application agnostic, is cloud native, and supports gRPC. We evaluate our approach and implementation using the micro-service benchmark by Google Cloud called Hipster Shop. Our approach results in caching of about 80% of requests. Results show the feasibility and efficiency of our approach, which encourages implementing caching in service meshes. Additionally, we make the code, experiments, and data publicly available.

none 6 no One of the main challenges of cloud-based service provisioning is to deploy a coordinated control of both application- and network-layer resources in order to provide adaptive service data delivery and adequate user service experiences. In this work we propose a signaling framework architecture for cross-layer resource orchestration, where service awareness provided by session control is effectively combined with the flexibility of software-defined network control. Following a hands-on approach, the proposed solution takes advantage of existing and commonly deployed technologies aiming at an incremental deployment of the software-defined control mechanisms for the purpose of cross-functional service orchestration. The signaling framework is presented and validated through experimental activities carried out on a test-bed reproducing a realistic cloud-based service scenario. Results are compared against an analytical model that allows to investigate and quantify the sensitivity of the cloud-based service performance to the most relevant system parameters. The study demonstrates that a critical role is played by the limitations of the response time of real devices such as commercial routers, and highlights how orchestration functions can mitigate the effect of such limitations while addressing scalability of the overall system. Negli ultimi anni si è diffusa, ben oltre i confini dell’ambito scientifico, la consapevolezza che il mondo si trova di fronte a sfide di portata straordinaria. Le grandi trasformazioni che stiamo vivendo hanno carattere strutturale e dimensione globale. A esse si è aggiunta una lunga fase di recessione economica che, inevitabilmente, complica lo scenario: aumenta la pressione sulla popolazione più povera, diminuiscono le risorse disponibili al credito e le occasioni offerte dai commerci e, in generale, rischiano di ridursi le opportunità per promuovere lo sviluppo. Questo sta accadendo, ovviamente con intensità diversa, a tutte le latitudini del globo, indebolendo il quadro delle capacità con le quali la comunità internazionale è chiamata a rispondere alle grandi questioni del domani. Tra queste la questione della sicurezza degli approvvigionamenti alimentari, che è al cuore dell’Esposizione Universale di Milano. Una sfida che è già oggi un’emergenza per una quota importante della popolazione mondiale, che vive soprattutto nei Paesi in via di sviluppo e in quelli cosiddetti emergenti (come Cina, Brasile e India, per citare i casi più emblematici di aree che, pur vivendo una fase di rapida crescita economica, vedono la presenza di una rilevante porzione di famiglie vivere ancora al di sotto della soglia di povertà). Il 2015 diventa un anno cruciale in tal senso non solo per la riflessione che sarà innescata dall’Expo, ma anche perché questo è l’anno target dei cosiddetti ‘obiettivi del Millennio e l’anno in cui saranno lanciati quelli dello sviluppo sostenibile.
