Rapid reconnaissance flyby missions are highly desirable for planetary defense due to their ability to quickly characterize a potentially hazardous asteroid. However, traditional flybys lack the ability to measure some of the most important characteristics of an asteroid: mass, density, and porosity. These highly related features are needed to estimate potential damage to Earth and to plan mitigation strategies. Using standard Earth-based ranging and Doppler tracking of the spacecraft as it flies by is not sufficient for the smaller asteroids that are of most concern for planetary defense. In this study, we apply a new technique, Doppler Gravimetry (DopGrav), to the 2023 Planetary Defense Conference hypothetical impact scenario. DopGrav supplements traditional Earth-based tracking of the flyby spacecraft with Doppler and optical measurements from the spacecraft to one or more test-masses that can pass much closer to the asteroid. We augmented the scenario reconnaissance flyby mission with a 6U CubeSat test mass, and use a similar concept of operations to what was demonstrated by LICIACube and DART. We show that with this addition, it would be possible to measure the mass of the hypothetical asteroid to better than 3% 1 σ. Initial definitions of sarcopenia included the age-associated loss of skeletal muscle mass that was presumed to be associated with late-life reduced functional capacity, disability and loss of independence. Because no method for determination of muscle mass was available for large cohort studies of aging men and women, lean body mass determined by dual X-ray absorptiometry or bioelectrical impedance was used as a surrogate measure of muscle mass. The data from these studies showed either no or a poor relationship between LBM and functional capacity and health related outcomes, leading to the conclusion of many that the amount of muscle may not be associated with these age-associated outcomes. It was assumed that some undefined index of muscle quality is the critical contributor. These studies also consistently showed that muscle strength is lost more quickly than lean mass. Total body muscle mass can now be measured directly, accurately and non-invasively using the D3creatine (D3Cr) dilution method. D3Cr muscle mass, but not DXA derived LBM, is strongly associated with functional capacity, falls and insulin resistance in older men and women. In addition, D3Cr muscle mass is associated with risk of disability, hip fracture and mortality. A 54-year-long series of continuous instrumental measurements of mass balance and its main components has already been accumulated at the Djankuat Glacier, which is representative of the Caucasus and the most studied glacier in Russia. The anomalies of these indicators in 2017/2018–2020/2021 were evaluated against an analysis of meteorological reasons that predetermined them. Each of the four balance years under consideration represents a particular anomaly of varying severity. As for conditions of mass income, three years saw accumulation higher than average, and in one year (2018/2019) it approached the norm. As for summer ablation conditions, similarly, in one season (2019) the melting differed from the average only slightly, but in the other three it was much higher. Consequently, in one year (2020/2021) the state of the glacier was close to normal, in another (2017/2018) the budget situation was much more favorable for Djankuat, and in the other two the final losses significantly exceeded the average annual mass loss rate. At the same time, in 2019/2020, an absolute record of ablation since the beginning of monitoring in 1967/1968 was recorded (4360 mm w.e.). Nevertheless, although negative mass balance values continue to be recorded annually, signs of an inevitable slowdown in the rate of glacier degradation in the Caucasus have appeared in the last 4-year-long period: the continued growth of winter snow accumulation overlaps the ongoing intensification of summer melting. The growth of debris cover in terms of area and thickness also affects this mass loss slowdown to some extent. This inhibits ablation, exerting a heat-insulating effect. Because of this, the congruence of mass balance parameters vs. altitude curves is distorted. Also, a tendency toward increasing annual glacier mass turnover was revealed for the last half-century. This fact gradually increases the energy of glaciation and indirectly indicates a weakening of continentality in the climate of the Caucasian highlands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Evaluating bone density and body composition by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and analyzing their relationships among young anorexic women in comparison with normal-lean matched controls. Materials and Methods: In this observational cohort study, 98 normal-underweight young females were enrolled (aged more than 16 and less than 24 years). The study group included 68 anorexic patients and 30 healthy age-matched controls. The patients underwent a DXA examination to evaluate bone mineral density and body composition. Several indexes of body composition were used: the FMI (Fat Mass Index), the TLMI (Total Lean Mass Index) and the SMI (Skeletal Muscle mass Index) the last one as a marker of sarcopenia. Results: According to the ISCD (International Society for Clinical Densitometry) criteria, a significantly higher percentage of anorexic patients were found to be below the expected range for age as compared to controls (P < 0.01). According to WHO criteria, 20% of the anorexic patients presented an osteoporotic T-score index at the lumbar level and 18% presented an osteoporotic T-score at the femoral level. As regards the lean body characteristics, the SMI and TLMI were significantly lower in the anorexic population (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively) and 24% of the anorexic patients presented SMI values that are indicative of pre-sarcopenia. In addition, only the SMI significantly correlated with both the lumbar and the femoral BMD values. Conclusion: Anorexic patients have a very high risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Bone density is influenced by fat body mass and also significantly by lean body mass. Special consideration should be given to the sarcopenic condition since it is a worsening factor of bone health. [Display omitted] Microfluidics has recently been proposed as a viable method for producing bulk nanobubbles for use in various applications. The portability, compact size, and capacity to precisely control fluids on a small scale are a few of the benefits of microfluidics that may be exploited to create customized bulk nanobubbles. However, despite the potential of microfluidic nanobubble generation, low throughput and limited nanobubble concentration remain challenging for microfluidics. Here, we integrate a microporous silicon membrane into a polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic chip to generate bulk nanobubbles in the 100–140 nm diameter range with a concentration of up to 108 mL−1. We investigate the nanobubble size and morphology using several characterisation techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, resonance mass measurement, dynamic light scattering, and the Tyndall effect. This new nanobubble generation technique can increase nanobubble concentration by ∼ 23 times compared to earlier microfluidic nanobubble generation platforms, which should increase the feasibility of translation to medical applications. When feeding dairy cows, there is a need for precise dosing of concentrate feed. The quality of the feed dosing process is influenced by the physical properties of the feed material and the accuracy of the feeder calibration. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of the accuracy of calibration of the spiral feeder and the type of granulated feed on the precision of dosing feed material at the feeding station. The study used a feeding station intended for feeding cattle, equipped with a spiral feeder with a feed rates of up to 1 kg min-1. Three types of feed material with different granule diameters were used for the tests. The characteristics of the feed pellets included their bulk density, diameter and length of the pellets. In the study, the accuracy of the feeder calibration was related to the number of feed mass measurements obtained in the calibration procedure. Options for three and six mass measurements were included. The tests were performed for two feed rates, i.e. 0.3 and 0.4 kg min-1. In order to determine the accuracy of feed dosing by the spiral feeder, the dosing accuracy index was calculated. The research results were subjected to statistical analysis. A statistically significant impact of calibration on the accuracy of feed dosing was found. Background: Twenty-four-hour urinary free cortisol (UFC) measurement is the initial diagnostic test for Cushing's syndrome (CS). We compared UFC determination by both direct and extraction immunoassays using Abbott Architect, Siemens Atellica Solution, and Beckman DxI800 with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In addition, we evaluated the value of 24-hr UFC measured by six methods for diagnosing CS. Methods: Residual 24-hr urine samples of 94 CS and 246 non-CS patients were collected. A laboratory-developed LC-MS/MS method was used as reference. UFC was measured by direct assays (D) using Abbott, Siemens, and Beckman platforms and by extraction assays (E) using Siemens and Beckman platforms. Method was compared using Passing-Bablok regression and Bland-Altman plot analyses. Cut-off values for the six assays and corresponding sensitivities and specificities were calculated by ROC analysis. Results: Abbott-D, Beckman-E, Siemens-E, and Siemens-D showed strong correlations with LC-MS/MS (Spearman coefficient r=0.965, 0.922, 0.922, and 0.897, respectively), while Beckman-D showed weaker correlation (r=0.755). All immunoassays showed proportionally positive bias. The areas under the curve were 0.975 for Abbott-D, 0.972 for LCMS/MS, 0.966 for Siemens-E, 0.948 for Siemens-D, 0.955 for Beckman-E, and 0.877 for Beckman-D. The cut-off values varied significantly (154.8-1,321.5 nmol/24 hrs). Assay sensitivity and specificity ranged from 76.1% to 93.2% and from 93.0% to 97.1%, respectively. Conclusions: Commercially available immunoassays for measuring UFC show different levels of analytical consistency compared to LC-MS/MS. In order to achieve the accurate spatial mass distribution density of powder stream for laser additive manufacturing with co-axial four powder injection nozzle, this paper established the full parametric mathematical model of spatial mass distribution density of powder stream, and proposed a simple experimental detection method. The results of theoretical calculations and experimental tests show that the calculated results are in complete agreement with the trend of the experimental results, and the calculated results are in high agreement (almost 100%) with the experimental results in the case of DL = 0, which verifies the accuracy and validity of the proposed model. Site-specific measurements of the crop yield during harvesting are essential for successfully implementing precision management techniques. This study aimed to estimate the mass of radish tubers using the impact principle under simulated vibration and sloped-field harvesting conditions with a laboratory test bench. These conditions included the conveyor speed (CS), impact plate layout (IP), falling height onto the impact plate (FH), the plate angle relative to the horizontal (PH), the field slope, and the vibration of the harvesting machine. Two layouts of impact-type sensors were fabricated and tested, one with a single load cell (SL) and the other with two load cells (DL). An adjustable slope platform and a vibration table equipped with vibration blades were utilized to simulate the slope and vibration effects, respectively. Calibrations were conducted to verify the accuracy of the sensor outputs, processed with the finite impulse response and moving average filters. Radish mass was estimated using an asymmetrically trimmed mean method. The relative percentage error (RE), standard error (SE), coefficient of determination (R²), and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to assess the impact plate performance. The results indicated that the SE for both impact plates was less than 4 g in the absence of vibration and slope conditions. The R2 for the single and double impact plates ranged from 0.58 to 0.89 and 0.69 to 0.81, respectively. The FH had no significant impact, while the PH significantly affected the mass measurements for both impact plates. On the other hand, the CS significantly affected the plate performance, except for the double-load-cell impact plate. Both vibration and slope affected the mass measurements, with RE values of 9.89% and 13.92%, respectively. The RE for filtered radish signals was reduced from 9.13% to 5.42%. The tests demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing the impact principle to assess the mass of radishes, opening up possibilities for the development of yield-monitoring systems for crops harvested in a similar manner. Short-term variability in body mass is a common, everyday phenomenon; however, data on body mass variability are scarce. While the physiological variability of body mass is negligible in healthy individuals, it could have implications for therapy in patients with impaired volume homeostasis, for example, patients with kidney failure undergoing kidney replacement therapy. We analyzed a long-term dataset comprising 9521 days of standardized body mass measurements from one healthy male individual and assessed the variability in body mass as a positive or negative relative difference in body mass measured on subsequent days. The average and median relative differences were zero, with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.53% for the one-day interval, increasing to 0.69% for the 7-day interval, and this variability was constant throughout the observation period. A body mass variability of approximately 0.6% (±450 mL in a 75-kg patient) should be taken into consideration when weight-dependent treatment prescriptions, e.g. the ultrafiltration rates in patients on hemodialysis, are being set. As the earliest relics of star formation episodes of the Universe, the most massive galaxies are the key to our understanding of the stellar population, cosmic structure, and supermassive black hole (SMBH) evolution. However, the details of their formation histories remain uncertain. We address these problems by planning a large survey sample of 101 ultramassive galaxies (z ≤ 0.3, |δ + 24°| < 45°, | b | > 8°), including 76 per cent ellipticals, 17 per cent lenticulars, and 7 per cent spirals brighter than MK ≤ −27 mag (stellar mass 2 × 1012 ≲ M ⋆ ≲ 5 × 1012 M⊙) with ELT/HARMONI. Our sample comprises diverse galaxy environments ranging from isolated to dense-cluster galaxies. The primary goals of the project are to (1) explore the stellar dynamics inside galaxy nuclei and weigh SMBHs, (2) constrain the black hole scaling relations at the highest mass, and (3) probe the late-time assembly of these most massive galaxies through the stellar population and kinematical gradients. We describe the survey, discuss the distinct demographics and environmental properties of the sample, and simulate their HARMONI Iz -, Iz + J -, and H + K -band observations by combining the inferred stellar-mass models from Pan-STARRS observations, an assumed synthetic spectrum of stars, and SMBHs with masses estimated based on different black hole scaling relations. Our simulations produce excellent state-of-the-art integral field spectrography and stellar kinematics (Δ V rms ≲ 1.5 per cent) in a relatively short exposure time. We use these stellar kinematics in combination with the Jeans anisotropic model to reconstruct the SMBH mass and its error using a Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation. Simple Summary: In the realm of livestock management, accurately estimating the weight of pigs presents a critical yet challenging task, particularly in the dynamic environment of farms. Traditional methods often struggle due to the continuous movement of pigs and fluctuating conditions such as lighting. To address these challenges, our study focuses on developing a novel method that simplifies weight estimation while adapting to the constantly changing conditions of real-world pig farms. Our solution, the moving pig weight estimate algorithm based on deep vision (MPWEADV), marks a significant step in this direction. It employs advanced imaging technology to capture both the visual appearance and depth information of moving pigs. The central idea is to combine these two types of data for more accurate weight estimates than traditional methods could provide. To validate our proposed method, we replicated two recently published methods and demonstrated through experimental results that our pig weight estimation model could rapidly and accurately determine the weight of pigs in the challenging scenarios we constructed. This model operates in an unconstrained environment, providing real-time evaluation of pigs' weight, thereby offering data support for grading and adjusting breeding plans, indicating a wide range of potential applications. In the field of livestock management, noncontact pig weight estimation has advanced considerably with the integration of computer vision and sensor technologies. However, real-world agricultural settings present substantial challenges for these estimation techniques, including the impacts of variable lighting and the complexities of measuring pigs in constant motion. To address these issues, we have developed an innovative algorithm, the moving pig weight estimate algorithm based on deep vision (MPWEADV). This algorithm effectively utilizes RGB and depth images to accurately estimate the weight of pigs on the move. The MPWEADV employs the advanced ConvNeXtV2 network for robust feature extraction and integrates a cutting-edge feature fusion module. Supported by a confidence map estimator, this module effectively merges information from both RGB and depth modalities, enhancing the algorithm's accuracy in determining pig weight. To demonstrate its efficacy, the MPWEADV achieved a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 4.082 kg and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 2.383% in our test set. Comparative analyses with models replicating the latest research show the potential of the MPWEADV in unconstrained pig weight estimation practices. Our approach enables real-time assessment of pig conditions, offering valuable data support for grading and adjusting breeding plans, and holds broad prospects for application. Previous studies have yielded widely divergent conclusions about the percentage of all mass public shootings globally that take place in the US, ranging from a low of 3% to a high of 36%. Because of documented underreporting of lower-severity attacks involving fewer than 10 victim fatalities in US cases in these studies, it is reasonable to assume that this underreporting issue also applies to their measurement of mass public shootings outside the US. To estimate the total number of mass public shootings worldwide, we use multiple assumptions and modeling approaches, including a hierarchical Bayesian model. Our estimates show the US accounted for anywhere between 16% and 26% of the world's mass public shootings during the 1976 to 2012 period. The goal of this paper has been to add an experimental data set for drying a meat product and provide a comparison with well-established thin-layer drying models. This article presented experimental investigations on the convective drying of Polish sausage slices at a temperature of 40°C. Slices have been in the thickness of 3 to 8mm. Measurements of mass loss and size change were performed. The data have been presented in the form of standard drying kinetics. Additionally, the estimation of the diffusion coefficient according to the simplified graphical approach is made. Rationale: Trimetazidine and its metabolites are prohibited substances in sports. With a growing number of adverse findings in human athletes, it is crucial to develop doping control strategies that include screening for trimetazidine in animal sports. This study aims to detect and characterize trimetazidine and its metabolites for doping control in camel racing. Methods: Camel urine and plasma samples were collected from four healthy animals following a single oral dose of trimetazidine. In vitro investigations were conducted using camel liver samples. Liquid–liquid extraction and solid‐phase extraction techniques were employed for the extraction of trimetazidine metabolites from plasma and urine matrices. The metabolites were analyzed using a Thermo Orbitrap Exploris LC‐MS system with optimized settings to achieve maximum sensitivity and accurate mass measurements. Results: Comprehensive metabolite profiling of trimetazidine in camels revealed the identification of seven phase I and five phase II metabolites. Phase I metabolites were primarily formed through dealkylation, while phase II metabolites were dominated by glucuronide conjugation of demethylated trimetazidine. The findings provided insights into the distinct metabolic pathways and biotransformation patterns of trimetazidine in camels under the experimental conditions. Conclusion: The developed method enables detection and characterization of trimetazidine and its metabolites in camels. The identified metabolites have the potential to serve as marker metabolites for trimetazidine abuse in camel racing. The complexity of aerosol particle properties and the diversity of characterizations make aerosol vertical transport flux measurements and analysis difficult. Although there are different methods, such as aerosol particle number concentration flux and aerosol mass flux based on the eddy covariance principle, and aerosol mass flux measurements based on the light-propagated large-aperture scintillation principle, there is a lack of mutual validation among the different methods. In this paper, a comparison of aerosol mass flux measurements based on the eddy covariance principle and aerosol mass flux measurements based on the light-propagated large aperture scintillation principle is carried out. The key idea of aerosol mass flux measurements based on the light-propagated large-aperture scintillation principle is the determination of the imaginary part of the atmospheric equivalent refractive index structure parameter (AERISP). In this paper, we will first compare the AERISPs measured by two different methods and then compare the aerosol mass vertical transport fluxes obtained by different methods. The experiments were conducted on the campus of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). The light propagation experiment was carried out between two tall buildings to obtain the imaginary and real parts of AERISPs for the whole path, which in turn can be used to obtain the aerosol vertical transport flux. An updated visibility meter is installed on the meteorological tower in the middle of the light path, which is utilized to obtain the single-point visibility, which is then converted to the imaginary part of the atmospheric equivalent refractive index (AERI). The imaginary parts of the AERISP were obtained using spectral analysis with visibility data. The results show that the imaginary parts of the AERISPs obtained by different methods are in good agreement. The imaginary part of the AERI measured by the visibility meter and the vertical wind speed obtained by the ultrasonic anemometer were used for covariance calculation to obtain the aerosol vertical transport flux. The trends of aerosol vertical transport fluxes obtained by different methods are consistent, and there are differences in some details, which may be caused by the inhomogeneity of the vertical transport of aerosol fluxes. The real-time automatic and accurate measurement of the mass of ultrafine particles is especially challenging due to their low concentrations and the interferences of larger particles. This work introduces a new method to estimate PM0.1 continuously. Based on the theoretical predictions of a 3-D chemical transport model, PM0.1 and N50 (number concentration of particles with a diameter above 50 nm) can have a very good correlation. This hypothesis is tested in this work by analyzing hourly measurements of size distributions, from different cities in Europe for a year. PM0.1 had a strong spatial and temporal correlation with N50 (R2 > 90%). The line passing through zero had an average slope of 0.16 ± 0.01 × 10−9 µg, for an assumed particle density equal to 1 g cm−3. This suggests that PM0.1 can be, at least in principle, measured indirectly but quite accurately and continuously by measuring N50 with a suitable condensation particle counter. NASA's Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observed X-ray emission from the pulsar PSR J0030 + 0451 in 2018. Riley et al. reported Bayesian parameter measurements of the mass and the star's radius using pulse-profile modeling of the X-ray data. This article reproduces their result using the open source software X-Ray Pulse Simulation and Inference and publicly available data within expected statistical errors. We note the challenges we faced in reproducing the results and demonstrate that the analysis can be reproduced and reused in future works by changing the prior distribution for the radius and the sampler configuration. We find no significant change in the measurement of the mass and radius, demonstrating that the original result is robust to these changes. Finally, we provide a containerized working environment that facilitates third-party reproduction of the measurements of the mass and radius of PSR J0030 + 0451 using the NICER observations. To precisely measure atomic masses and select neutron-deficient isotopes produced by fusion evaporation reactions, an MRTOF-MS (multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer) at the SHANS (Spectrometer for Heavy Atom and Nuclear Structure) is being developed. One of the key parts, an RF ion trap system with the aim to provide brilliant ion pulses with a low energy spread and narrow pulse width for ion preparation prior to injection into the MRTOF mass analyzer, has been constructed and commissioned offline successfully. The principle, construction details and test results are reported. Pulsed beams of 39 K 1 + , 85 , 87 Rb 1 + and 133 Cs 1 + ions have been tested and the amplitudes and frequencies of the RF signals, DC voltages, helium gas pressure and time parameters have been scanned. There is a general consensus that soot produced by hydrocarbon combustion consists of two components, elemental carbon associated with the graphitic nanostructure and organic carbon. Despite the relevance of evaluating their radiative properties, particularly for organic carbon, the knowledge of the spectral absorption behavior remains limited. In this work, a dual-beam five wavelengths absorption photometer is used to estimate the optical properties of particulate matter generated by a laminar premixed ethylene-air flame at different residence times along the flame. The wavelength dependence of the light absorption of aerosols collected on filters is analyzed in terms of both the optical band gap and the absorption Ångström exponent, AAE. The aerosols are then analyzed in terms of the organic and elemental carbon content by a thermal-optical OC-EC analyzer. Combining the results of light absorption and OC-EC analysis, the spectral mass absorption coefficient of both the organic carbon and elemental carbon components in soot are obtained. Neutrino masses are yet unknown. We discuss the present state of effective electron antineutrino mass from β decay experiments; effective Majorana neutrino mass from neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments; neutrino mass squared differences from neutrino oscillation: solar, atmospheric, reactor, and accelerator-based experiments; sum of neutrino masses from cosmological observations. The formation mechanism of AM CVn binary has not been well understood yet. Accurate measurements of the mass transfer rate can help us to determine the formation mechanism. But unfortunately such observation by electromagnetic means is quite challenging. One possible formation channel of AM CVn binary is a semidetached white dwarf binary. Such system emits strong gravitational wave radiation which could be measured by the future space-based detectors. We can simultaneously extract the mass transfer rate and the orbital period from the gravitational wave signal. We employ a post-Keplerian waveform model of gravitational wave and carry out a Fisher analysis to estimate the measurement accuracy of mass transfer rate through gravitational wave detection. Special attention is paid to the observed sources in Gaia Data Release 2. We found that we can accurately measure the mass transfer rate for those systems. Comparing to electromagnetic observations, gravitational wave detection improves the accuracy more than two orders of magnitude. Background: Standard guidelines for performing conventional endodontic procedures have undergone a number of modifications recently. An ideal characteristics of a root end filling materials include dimensional stability; radio-opacity; non-resorbability; compressibility, adequate working and quick setting time; biocompatibility especially in peri-radicular area; bioactivity and easy handling properties. Objectives: This study evaluated and compared different root-end filling materials by determining their solubility, sorption and fluid uptake after immersion in deionized water over a period of 28 days. Methods: Materials were mixed a per manufacturer's instructions and disc-shaped specimens were made (15mm×1mm). After 24h curing, discs were immersed in deionized water and incubated at 37±1C. At specified time intervals, measurements for mass and volume of discs were taken to calculate fluid sorption, solubility and uptake. Results: Fluid uptake of MTA was 0.029±0.0025g at day 1 and 0.066±0.004g at day 28 whereas, for Acroseal it was 0.0006±0.0001g at day 1 and 0.006±0.001g at day 28. Fluid uptake of MTA and Acroseal increased with passage of time but for Biodentine fluid uptake decreased from day 1 (0.017±0.005g) to day 28 (0.008± 0.005g). Acroseal exhibited lowest values of fluid sorption (0.006±0.0005%) and solubility (0.0006± 0.00005%) whereas bio-dentine exhibited maximum values of fluid sorption (0.06±0.007%) and solubility (0.04±0.03%). Conclusions: Percent water solubility and sorption of Biodentine is higher than MTA and Acroseal, whereas its fluid uptake decreases over a period of 28 days in comparison to MTA and Acroseal, indicating its stability and thus making Biodentine a better root-end filling material. Laboratory experiments were conducted on the breaching of homogeneous non-cohesive sandy fluvial dikes induced by flow overtopping. Tests were conducted using a main channel, an erodible lateral dike and a floodplain. The main channel width and Froude number prior to overtopping were systematically varied. Breach discharge was deduced from water level measurements and mass conservation. High-resolution 3D reconstructions of the evolving breach geometry were obtained using a non-intrusive laser profilometry technique. The main channel width and Froude number show significant influence on the breach expansion and hydrograph. Breach hydrographs are divided into three types, depending on the Froude number and a non-dimensional main channel width. An adapted fluvial dike breaching model based on the concept of "effective breach width" is proposed. Using the laboratory data, the computed breach discharge is found extremely satisfactory, although the breach downstream expansion is not accurately reproduced by the model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Precise and accurate atomic mass data provide crucial information for applications in a wide range of fields in physics and beyond, including astrophysics, nuclear structure, particle and neutrino physics, fundamental symmetries, chemistry, and metrology. The most precise atomic mass measurements are performed on charged particles confined in a Penning trap. Here, we describe the development, status, and outlook of CHIP-TRAP: the Central Michigan University high-precision Penning trap. CHIP-TRAP aims to perform ultra-high precision (∼1 part in 10 11 fractional precision) mass measurements on stable and long-lived isotopes produced with external ion sources and transported to the Penning traps. Along the way, ions of a particular m / q are selected with a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass separator (MR-TOF-MS), with further filtering performed in a cylindrical capture trap before the ions are transported to a pair of hyperbolic measurement traps. In this paper, we report on the design and status of CHIP-TRAP and present results from the commissioning of the ion sources, MR-TOF-MS, and capture trap. The single-ion Penning trap (SIPT) at the Low-Energy Beam Ion Trapping Facility has been developed to perform precision Penning trap mass measurements of single ions, ideal for the study of exotic nuclei available only at low rates at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Single-ion signals are very weak—especially if the ion is singly charged—and the few meaningful ion signals must be disentangled from an often larger noise background. A useful approach for simulating Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance signals is outlined and shown to be equivalent to the established yet computationally intense method. Applications of supervised machine learning algorithms for classifying background signals are discussed, and their accuracies are shown to be ≈65% for the weakest signals of interest to SIPT. Additionally, a deep neural network capable of accurately predicting important characteristics of the ions observed by their image charge signal is discussed. Signal classification on an experimental noise dataset was shown to have a false-positive classification rate of 10.5%, and 3.5% following additional filtering. The application of the deep neural network to an experimental 85Rb+ dataset is presented, suggesting that SIPT is sensitive to single-ion signals. A highly sensitive nanoscale mass sensor was developed for weight measurement of single microparticles using a suspended graphene structure. The sensor is composed of an array of holes covered with suspended monolayer graphene. Based on the shift of the 2D Raman peak in graphene, originating from the elongation of carbon–carbon bonds under pressure, the mass of microparticles in suspended graphene can be measured. The results show that the sensor can detect microparticles with mass ranging from 0.1 ng to 3 ng. The peak shift ratio is −69.8 cm−1 per 1% strain for the experimental value and −72.3 cm−1 per 1% strain for the calculated value. We examine the effect of supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass scaling relation choice on the inferred SMBH mass population since redshift z ∼ 3. To make robust predictions for the gravitational wave background (GWB), we must have a solid understanding of the underlying SMBH demographics. Using the SDSS and 3D-HST + CANDELS surveys for 0 < z < 3, we evaluate the inferred SMBH masses from two SMBH–galaxy scaling relations: M BH– M bulge and M BH–σ. Our SMBH mass functions come directly from stellar mass measurements for M BH– M bulge, and indirectly from stellar mass and galaxy radius measurements along with the galaxy mass fundamental plane for M BH–σ. We find that there is a substantial difference in predictions especially for z > 1, and this difference increases out to z  = 3. In particular, we find that using velocity dispersion predicts a greater number of SMBHs with masses greater than 109 M⊙. The GWB that pulsar timing arrays find evidence for is higher in amplitude than expected from GWB predictions which rely on high-redshift extrapolations of local SMBH mass–galaxy scaling relations. The difference in SMBH demographics resulting from different scaling relations may be the origin for the mismatch between the signal amplitude and predictions. Generally, our results suggest that a deeper understanding of the potential redshift evolution of these relations is needed if we are to draw significant insight from their predictions at z > 1. Recent satellite measurements of glacier mass balance show mountain glaciers all over the world had generally negative mass balances in the first decades of the 21st century. We analyse archived data for surface mass balance and summer temperature for 37 Northern Hemisphere glaciers with data for 1961–2020. We compare mean annual balances for 1961–90 and 1991–2020, and for 25 glaciers explain the changes in annual balance by changes in winter and summer balances. Mean balances 1961–90 were already substantially negative for 19 out of the 25 glaciers. Changes in winter balances from 1961–90 to 1991–2020 average close to zero but changes in summer balance are strongly negative. Mean balance 1991–2020 is strongly correlated with change in summer balance, weakly correlated with winter balance change, and strongly correlated with mean balance 1961–90. We estimate 1991–2020 summer temperature anomalies for the 37 glaciers and confirm that summer temperature anomalies for 1991–2020 were higher for the Alps, by nearly 1.5°C, than for other areas. Substantial variations in the temperature – sensitivity of summer balances for individual glaciers of −0.2 to −1.0 m w.e. a−1°C−1 deserve further study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When introducing a nanoparticle into an optical trap, its mass and shape are not immediately apparent. We combine a charge-based mass measurement with a shape determination method based on light scattering and an analysis of the damping rate anisotropy, all on the same set of silica nanoparticles, trapped using optical tweezers in vacuum. These methods have previously only been used separately, and the mass determination method has not been applied to asymmetric particles before. We demonstrate that the combination of these classification techniques is required to distinguish particles with similar mass but different shape, and vice versa. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is a widely available, cost-effective and sensitive technique for measuring whole body and regional lean tissue mass and has been used in prior clinical trials in neuromuscular diseases. The Clinical Trial Readiness to Solve Barriers to Drug Development in FSHD (ReSolve) study is a prospective, longitudinal, observational multisite study. We obtained concurrent DEXA scans and functional outcome measurements in 185 patients with FSHD at the baseline visit. We determined the associations between lean tissue mass in the upper and lower extremities and corresponding clinical outcome measures. There were moderate correlations between upper and lower extremity lean tissue mass and their corresponding strengths and function. We measure precise orbits and dynamical masses and derive age constraints for six confirmed and one candidate Sirius-like systems, including the Hyades member HD 27483. Our orbital analysis incorporates radial velocities, relative astrometry, and Hipparcos – Gaia astrometric accelerations. We constrain the main-sequence lifetime of a white dwarf's progenitor from the remnant's dynamical mass and semi-empirical initial–final mass relations and infer the cooling age from mass and effective temperature. We present new relative astrometry of HD 27483 B from Keck/NIRC2 observations and archival Hubble Space Telescope data, and obtain the first dynamical mass of |${0.798}_{-0.041}^{+0.10}$| M⊙, and an age of |${450}_{-180}^{+570}$| Myr, consistent with previous age estimates of Hyades. We also measure precise dynamical masses for HD 114174 B (0.591 ± 0.011 M⊙) and HD 169889 B (⁠|${0.526}_{-0.037}^{+0.039}$| M⊙), but their age precisions are limited by their uncertain temperatures. For HD 27786 B, the unusually small mass of 0.443 ± 0.012 M⊙ suggests a history of rapid mass-loss, possibly due to binary interaction in its progenitor's asymtotic giant branch phase. The orbits of HD 118475 and HD 136138 from our radial velocity fitting are overall in good agreement with Gaia DR3 astrometric two-body solutions, despite moderate differences in the eccentricity and period of HD 136138. The mass of |${0.580}_{-0.039}^{+0.052}$| M⊙ for HD 118475 B and a speckle imaging non-detection confirms that the companion is a white dwarf. Our analysis shows examples of a rich number of precise WD dynamical mass measurements enabled by Gaia DR3 and later releases, which will improve empirical calibrations of the white dwarf initial–final mass relation. Soai's asymmetric autocatalysis represents a highly remarkable example for spontaneous symmetry breaking and enantioselective amplification in the enantioselective alkylation of pyrimidine‐5‐carbaldehydes to the corresponding chiral pyrimidine alcohols. Recently, zinc hemiacetalate complexes, formed from pyrimidine‐5‐carbaldehydes and the chiral product alcohol, were identified by in situ high‐resolution mass spectrometric measurements as highly active transient asymmetric catalysts in this autocatalytic transformation. To study the formation of such hemiacetals and their stereodynamic properties, we focused on the synthesis of coumarin homolog biaryl systems with carbaldehyde and alcohol substituents. Such systems are able to form hemiacetals by intramolecular cyclization. An interesting feature of the substituted biaryl backbone is that tropos and atropos systems can be obtained, enabling or disabling the intramolecular cyclization to hemiacetals. Biaryl structures with various functional groups were synthesized, and the equilibrium and stereodynamics between the closed and open structures were investigated by dynamic enantioselective HPLC (DHPLC). Much of astrophysics is fueled by nuclear physics with observables, such as energy output and elements produced, that are heavily dependent on the masses of the nuclides. A mass precision of at least 50 keV/c 2 for many rare nuclides is needed to adequately discriminate models that explain the observables. In recent decades, the development of new facilities and mass-measurement techniques has made available a wealth of precise and accurate mass data. Monitoring estradiol (E2) is important for determining the onset of pubertal development as well as in the evaluation of girls with precocious puberty. However, E2 measurement remains an analytical challenge in children, who have lower circulating levels. We developed and evaluated a simple and sensitive LC-MS/MS procedure for serum E2 quantification in pediatric populations and established age- and sex-specific pediatric reference intervals. Residual patient serum samples were used to evaluate the analytical performance of our in-house LC-MS/MS E2 assay. The evaluation included accuracy, precision, linearity, functional sensitivity (LLoQ), and method comparison. Age- and sex-specific pediatric E2 reference intervals were also established from a cohort of 405 healthy children (birth to 18 years) recruited with informed consent. Age- and sex-specific differences were assessed, and outliers were removed. Reference intervals were established using the robust method. The assay imprecision was <5.3 %. Assay linearity ranged from 13.7 to 1923.3 pmol/L. The LLoQ corresponding to a CV of 20 % was determined to be 8.9 pmol/L. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a mean bias of 29.3 pmol/L or 9.1 % between our LC-MS/MS E2 assay and an external reference laboratory measuring E2 by LC-MS/MS. Our LC-MS/MS E2 assay shows acceptable accuracy, precision, functional sensitivity (LLoQ), and linearity for E2 quantification. Our LC-MS/MS E2 assay also showed good agreement with an external reference laboratory measuring E2 by LC-MS/MS. In addition, using CALIPER samples, we established robust age- and sex-specific pediatric E2 reference intervals to improve accuracy of test result interpretation and clinical decision making. Social instability frequently arises in group-living species, but the potential costs have rarely been investigated in free-living cooperative breeders, especially across different timeframes. Using natural observations, body mass measurements and life-history data from dwarf mongooses (Helogale parvula), we determined the short- and long-term consequences of a change in one of the dominant breeding pairs. We found that a new breeder led to alterations in both collective and individual behaviours (i.e. increases in communal scent-marking, engagement in intergroup interactions, sentinel activity and within-group grooming), as well as reduced body mass gain, further demographic changes and decreased reproductive success (i.e. fewer pups surviving to adulthood). The effects were particularly apparent when it was the female breeder who changed; new female breeders were younger than more experienced counterparts. Our findings support the idea that stability and cooperation are strongly linked and provide potential reasons for previously documented health and fitness benefits of social stability. We probed the dynamical mass profiles of ten galaxy clusters from the HIghest X-ray FLUx Galaxy Cluster Sample (HIFLUGCS) using galaxy kinematics. We numerically solved the spherical Jeans equation and parameterize the dynamical mass profile and the galaxy velocity anisotropy profile using two general functions to ensure that our results are not biased toward any specific model. The mass-velocity anisotropy degeneracy is ameliorated by using two "virial shape parameters" that depend on the fourth moment of velocity distribution. The resulting velocity anisotropy estimates consistently show a nearly isotropic distribution in the inner regions, with an increasing radial anisotropy toward large radii. We compared our derived dynamical masses with those calculated from X-ray gas data assuming hydrostatic equilibrium, finding that massive and rich relaxed clusters generally present consistent mass measurements, while unrelaxed or low-richness clusters have systematically larger total masses than hydrostatic masses by, on average, 50%. This might help alleviate current tensions in the measurement of σ8, but it also leads to cluster baryon fractions below the cosmic value. Finally, our approach probes accelerations as low as 10−11 m s−2, comparable to the outskirts of individual late-type galaxies. In this work, the carrier transport mechanism of Mg/Pt/Au Ohmic contact on p-GaN/AlGaN/GaN with a very low specific contact resistivity of 1.98 × 10−5 Ω cm2 is investigated. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurement results show that the Mg concentration near the p-GaN surface increases form 8 × 1019 to 7 × 1020/cm3 for Mg/Pt/Au contact after annealing. It indicates that Mg atoms from the Mg/Pt/Au metal stack diffuse into the p-GaN during annealing, forming a heavily Mg doped p++-GaN layer with a depth of about 3 nm. The sheet resistance Rsh depends on temperature for Mg/Pt/Au contacts on p-GaN/GaN, indicating that the influence of 2DHG on carrier transport mechanisms at the metal/p-GaN interface was eliminated. For Mg/Pt/Au contacts at ≥360 K, specific contact resistivity reasonably follows T−1, which indicates that the band conduction of Schottky theory dominates the carrier transport. For Mg/Pt/Au contacts at 200–360 K, the electrical resistivity reasonably follows T−1/4, indicating variable-range hopping (VRH) conduction through Mg-related deep-level defects (DLD). Based on the VRH conduction model, the effective barrier height (qφ) of the Mg-related DLD band is extracted as 0.265 eV, which well matches the excellent Ohmic contact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The implementation of advanced precision farming systems, which are becoming relevant due to rapid technological development, requires the invention of new approaches to the diagnostics and control of the growing process of cultivated crops. This is especially relevant for potato, as it is one of the most demanded crops in the world. In the present work, an analytic model of the dependence of potato tubers mass on carbon dioxide concentration under cultivation in a closed vegetation system is presented. The model is based on the quantitative description of starch molecule synthesis from carbon dioxide under photosynthesis. In the frame of this work, a comprehensive description of the proposed model is presented, and the verification of this model was conducted on the basis of experimental data from a closed urban vertical farm with automated climate control. The described model can serve as a basis for the non-contact non-invasive real-time measurement of potato tuber mass under growth in closed vegetation systems, such as vertical farms and greenhouses, as well as orbital and space crop production systems. Low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors continue to grow in popularity, but issues such as aerosol size-dependent sensitivity drive the need for effective calibration schemes. Here we devise a time-evolving calibration method for the Plantower PMS5003 PM2.5 mass concentration measurements. We use 2 years of measurements from the Berkeley Environmental Air-quality and CO2 Network sensors deployed in San Francisco and Los Angeles in our analysis. The calibration uses a hygroscopic growth correction factor derived from k-Köhler Theory, where the calibration parameters are determined empirically using EPA AQS reference data at co-location sites during the period from 2021–2022. The parameters are found to vary cyclically through the seasons, and the seasonal cycles match changes in sulfate and elemental carbon PM composition fractions throughout the year. In both regions, the seasonal RH dependence calibration performs better than the uncalibrated data and data calibrated with the EPA's national Plantower calibration algorithm. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the seasonal RH dependence calibration reduces the RMSE by ~40 % from the uncalibrated data and maintains a mean bias much smaller than the EPA National Calibration scheme (–0.90 vs –2.73 µg/m3). We also find that calibration parameters forecasted beyond those fit with the EPA reference data continue to outperform the uncalibrated data and EPA calibration data, enabling real-time application of the calibration scheme even in the absence of reference data. While the correction greatly improves the data accuracy, non-Gaussian distribution of the residuals suggests that other processes besides hygroscopic growth can be parameterized for future improvement of this calibration. Body condition is an important proxy for the overall health and energetic status of fishes. The classically used Fulton's condition factor requires length and mass measurements, but mass can be difficult to obtain in large species. Girth measurements can replace mass for wild pelagic sharks. However, girth‐calculated condition has not been validated against Fulton's condition factor intraspecifically, across ontogeny or reproduction, or in a controlled setting. We used the epaulette shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum), because they are amenable to captive reproduction, to track fine‐scale body condition changes across life stages, oviparous reproduction and between condition indices. We measured four girths, total length and mass of 16 captive epaulette sharks across 1 year and tracked female reproduction daily. We also collected length and mass data from an additional 72 wild‐caught sharks and 155 sharks from five previous studies and two public aquaria to examine the relationship between length and mass for this species. Even though data were derived from a variety of sources, a predictable length–mass relationship (R2 = 0.990) was achievable, indicating that combining data from a variety of sources could help overcome knowledge gaps regarding basic life history characteristics. We also found that condition factor decreased during early life stages, then increased again into adulthood, with predictable changes across the female reproductive cycle. Finally, we determined that both Fulton's and girth condition analyses were comparable. Outcomes from this study uniquely provide body condition changes across the complete life history, including fine‐scale female reproductive stages, and validate the use of girths as a nonlethal whole‐organism energetic assessment for fishes. The beta-decay rates of neutron-rich nuclei far from the stability are still very limited due to the lack of experimental data. In this paper, we calculated the half-lives of the exotic nuclei close to the neutron drip line by using a recent semi-empirical formula (FZh). The β-decay Q-values calculated using the finite-range droplet macroscopic (FRDM) model and taken from the AME2020 database (with and without uncertainty) were used in the calculations to investigate the impact of the mass uncertainty on the half-life predictions. We found that a deviation of 7% in the Q-value can lead to an uncertainty of 40% in the half-life and a large change, up to two orders of magnitude, in the r-process abundance. The approach combining the AME2020 Q-value and FZh model has emerged as a good tool for the half-life prediction. Background: Agatston scoring, the traditional method for measuring coronary artery calcium, is limited in its ability to accurately quantify low‐density calcifications, among other things. The inaccuracy of Agatston scoring is likely due partly to the arbitrary thresholding requirement of Agatston scoring. Purpose: A calcium quantification technique that removes the need for arbitrary thresholding and is more accurate, sensitive, reproducible, and robust is needed. Improvements to calcium scoring will likely improve patient risk stratification and outcome. Methods: The integrated Hounsfield technique was adapted for calcium scoring (integrated calcium mass). Integrated calcium mass requires no thresholding and includes all calcium information within an image. This study utilized phantom images acquired by G van Praagh et al., with calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) densities in the range of 200–800 mgHAcm−3 to measure calcium according to integrated calcium mass and Agatston scoring. The calcium mass was known, which allowed for accuracy, reproducibility, sensitivity, and robustness comparisons between integrated calcium mass and Agatston scoring. Multiple CT vendors (Canon, GE, Philips, Siemens) were used during the image acquisition phase, which provided a more robust comparison between the two calcium scoring techniques. Three calcification inserts of different diameters (1, 3, and 5 mm) and different HA densities (200, 400, and 800 mgHAcm−3) were placed within the phantom. The effect of motion was also analyzed using a dynamic phantom. All dynamic phantom calcium inserts were 5.0 ± 0.1 mm in diameter with a length of 10.0 ± 0.1 mm. The four different densities were 196 ± 3, 380 ± 2, 408 ± 2, and 800 ± 2 mgHAcm−3. Results: Integrated calcium mass was more accurate than Agatston scoring for stationary scans (RMSEIntegrated=2.87$RMS{E}_{Integrated} = 2.87$, RMSEAgatson=4.07$RMS{E}_{Agatson} = 4.07$) and motion affected scans (RMSEIntegrated=9.70$RMS{E}_{Integrated} = 9.70$, RMSEAgatson=19.98$RMS{E}_{Agatson} = 19.98$). On average, integrated calcium mass was more reproducible than Agatston scoring for two of the CT vendors. The percentage of false‐negative and false‐positive calcium scores were lower for integrated calcium mass (15.00%, 0.00%) than Agatston scoring (28.33%, 6.67%). Integrated calcium mass was more robust to changes in scan parameters than Agatston scoring. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that integrated calcium mass is more accurate, reproducible, and sensitive than Agatston scoring on a variety of different CT vendors. The substantial reduction in false‐negative scores for integrated calcium mass is likely to improve risk‐stratification for patients undergoing calcium scoring and their potential outcome. We present results of studying the sensitivity of an acoustic method for gaging the density of thermally expanded graphite (TEG) samples based on recording changes in the amplitude of a signal transmitted through the sample due to a change in density. They show that the maximum sensitivity of the method is comparable with the error of measurement of density and mass by the direct weight method, 26 kg/m3 and 0.02 g, respectively. The unevenness of the density distribution over the area of TEG samples of various thicknesses was estimated, while the deviation of the amplitude of the signal transmitted through the sample, proportional to the density deviation, reached up to 50% for some sheets, 30% for mats, and the smallest did not exceed 10%. During the scanning process, an inversely proportional dependence of the amplitude of the transmitted acoustic signal on the average sample density was revealed. Reproducibility of body fat (BF) and fat-free mass (FFM) measurements obtained by two indirect methods (bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and ultrasound scanning (US)) was performed in a group of young adults. To evaluate reproducibility, the repeated body composition measurements obtained using an ABC-02 Medas bioimpedance analyzer and BodyMetrixTM ultrasound scanner were carried out in the group of adult men and women. The study indicates the reliability of both individual and group estimates, as well as high reproducibility of measurements obtained with BIA and US. Strong positive significant correlations were found between the body composition measurements obtained with an ABC-02 Medas and BodyMetrixTM, as well as between repeated measurements of each of the devices. The analysis carried out for the ABC-02 Medas and BodyMetrixTM devices indicates good reproducibility of BF and FFM measurements in young men and women. The novel technique of mean range bunching has been developed and applied at the projectile fragment separator FRS at GSI in four experiments of the FAIR phase-0 experimental program. Using a variable degrader system at the final focal plane of the FRS, the ranges of the different nuclides can be aligned, allowing to efficiently implant a large number of different nuclides simultaneously in a gas-filled stopping cell or an implantation detector. Stopping and studying a cocktail beam overcomes the present limitations of stopped-beam experiments. The conceptual idea of mean range bunching is described and illustrated using simulations. In a single setting of the FRS, 37 different nuclides were stopped in the cryogenic stopping cell and were measured in a single setting broadband mass measurement with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer of the FRS Ion Catcher. High-resolution experiments with stored and cooled exotic nuclei have been pioneered and applied with the FRS-ESR facilities at GSI since 1991. Exotic nuclei have been produced, spatially separated in flight with the FRS and injected in the longitudinal dispersive storage ring ESR for high-resolution mass and lifetime measurements. For very short-lived nuclei, i.e., with lifetimes shorter than the cooling time, the ion-optical system of the ring has to be operated in the so-called isochronous mode. Under this condition, the inherent momentum spread of the fragments does not limit the accuracy of experiments if both the revolution time and the magnetic rigidity are simultaneously measured for the circulating ions. In this contribution, we demonstrate a novel feature for the ESR operated in the isochronous mode and the phase-space matching of FRS and ESR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
