The neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet–lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP)-albumin ratio (hsCAR), and systemic immune-inflammatory (SII) index are promising systemic inflammation (SI) biomarkers in coronary artery diseases. Abstract

3‐Deoxy‐d‐manno‐oct‐2‐ulosonic acid (Kdo) is an eight‐carbon monosaccharide found widely in bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) and capsule polysaccharides (CPSs). We developed an indirect method for the stereoselective synthesis of α‐Kdo glycosides with a C3‐p‐tolylthio‐substituted Kdo phosphite donor. The presence of the p‐tolylthio group enhanced the reactivity, suppressed the formation of elimination by‐products (2,3‐enes), and provided complete α‐stereocontrol. A variety of Kdo α‐glycosides were synthesized by our method in excellent yields (up to 98 %). After glycosylation, the p‐tolylthio group can be efficiently removed by free‐radical reduction. Subsequently, the orthogonality of the phosphite donor and thioglycoside donor was demonstrated by the one‐pot synthesis of a trisaccharide in Helicobacter pylori and Neisseria meningitidis LPS. Moreover, an efficient total synthesis route to the challenging 4,5‐branched Kdo trisaccharide in LPSs from several A. baumannii strains was highlighted. To demonstrate the high reactivity of our approach further, the highly crowded 4,5,7,8‐branched Kdo pentasaccharide was synthesized as a model molecule for the first time. 114. An Explanation for a Paradox in a Fluid-Discharging Cantilevered Pipe Attached With an End-Mass

Abstract

For a fluid-discharging cantilevered pipe attached with an end-mass, there are two methods to account for the end-mass effect. The first is that the end-mass is considered in the boundary conditions. The second is that the end-mass is included in the equation of motion via a Dirac delta function. As the analytical solution of the linear free vibration model is not available due to the presence of Coriolis force, the eigenfunctions of a beam, which satisfy the same boundary conditions, are commonly employed in the Galerkin method. It has been found the first method is incorrect for natural frequency calculation when the internal flow velocity is nonzero. However, the intrinsic mechanism remains to be clarified. This study has demonstrated the eigenfunctions in the first method depend on the end-mass and the orthogonality relations are quite different from that of typical simple beams, based on which a new model is proposed and the prediction compares well with that in the second method. For further validation, the critical internal flow velocity, the onset flutter frequency, and the dynamic responses of suspended pipes under gravity are computed, which compare well with experimental observations. This study can provide a workbench for fluid-conveying pipes with various boundary conditions.

128. The role of political connections in rapid internationalisation: A study among Chinese international new ventures.

Abstract

Drawing upon the attention-based view, we examine whether political connections facilitate or hinder the speed of new venture internationalisation. Given the limited managerial attention and information-processing capacities of decision-makers, international new ventures (INVs) need to make a trade-off between domestic business activities and rapid foreign expansion. We hypothesise that INVs with political connections, being embedded in political networks in their home market, tend to focus their attention on domestic business activities rather than rapid internationalisation. We also hypothesise that a high level of subnational trade openness mitigates the baseline negative relationship. Analyses based on the longitudinal data of INVs publicly listed in China support the hypotheses. Our study contributes to the literature by unveiling the dilemma of INVs which are developing board political connections at home and seeking rapid internationalisation abroad. Abstract

Ustilaginoidea virens is the causal agent of rice false smut, which can be a highly destructive disease of rice. The plasma membrane phosphatase Psr1 proteins, which act as a regulator of the salinity stress response in yeast, are widely distributed across fungi, but their functional characterization is sketchy. In this study, we characterized the functions of Psr1 protein, UvPsr1, in U. virens. Analyses of the ΔUvpsr1 and its complementation strain showed that UvPsr1 is required for normal mycelial growth, conidiation and tolerance to oxidative, osmotic and cell wall stresses. When rice panicles were inoculated with the ΔUvpsr1 strains, no symptoms of false smut disease developed, showing that UvPSR1 also contributes to the pathogenicity of the fungus. The deletion mutant of UvPSR1 also appeared to produce a smaller titer of toxic compounds able to inhibit elongation of the germinated seeds. In conclusion, our results indicated that UvPsr1 is a new pathogenic factor of U. virens.

Abstract

The catalytic performance is highly related to the catalyst structure. Herein, a series of Ni nanoparticles supported on Y2O3 with different morphologies were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal process screening different pH environments. These Ni/Y2O3 catalysts were applied to efficiently produce COx-free H2 through ammonia decomposition. We identify a significant impact of Y2O3 supports on nickel nanoclusters sizes and dispersion. The experimental results show that Ni/Y11 catalyst achieves 100% ammonia decomposition conversion under a gas hour space velocity (GHSV) of 12,000 ml·h−1·gcat−1 and temperature of 650 °C. Such a high level of activity over Ni/Y11 catalyst was attributed to a large specific surface area, appropriate alkalinity, and small Ni nanoparticles diameter with high dispersion.
