Abstract

We report on the development of an induction based low temperature high frequency ac susceptometer capable of measuring at frequencies up to 3.5 MHz and at temperatures between 2 K and 300 K. Careful balancing of the detection coils and calibration have allowed a sample magnetic moment resolution of $5\times10^{-10} Am^2$ at 1 MHz. We will discuss the design and characterization of the susceptometer, and explain the calibration process. We also include some example measurements on the spin ice material CdEr$_2$S$_4$ and iron oxide based nanoparticles to illustrate functionality.

Abstract

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) are new paradigms in the move towards open software and network hardware. While NFV aims to virtualize network functions and deploy them into general purpose hardware, SDN makes networks programmable by separating the control and data planes. NFV and SDN are complementary technologies capable of providing one network solution. SDN can provide connectivity between Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in a flexible and automated way, whereas NFV can use SDN as part of a service function chain. There are many studies designing NFV/SDN architectures in different environments. Researchers have been trying to address reliability, performance, and scalability problems using different architectural designs. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) focuses on integrated NFV/SDN architectures, with the following goals: i) to investigate and provide an in-depth review of the state-of-the-art of NFV/SDN architectures, ii) to synthesize their architectural designs, and iii) to identify areas for further improvements. Broadly, this SLR will encourage researchers to advance the current stage of development (i.e., the state-of-the-practice) of integrated NFV/SDN architectures, and shed some light on future research efforts and the challenges faced., Comment: Accepted for publication at ACM Computing Surveys

113. Integrating glacier dynamics into hydrological modelling : a climate change impact assessment of the data-scarce headwaters of the Tarim River, Central Asia

Abstract

This thesis addresses the complexities of conducting hydrological climate change impact assessments in mountainous, highly glacierised catchments by developing and validating a glacier dynamics module for the hydrological model SWIM. It provides the first integrated climate change impact assessment for the five headwaters of the Tarim River, NW China/Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia, overcoming the region’s severe data-scarcity. The region’s heterogeneity and limited data availability is characterised, with a focus on the quality of precipitation datasets. After using the original SWIM model for an analysis of observed glacial lake outburst floods and highlighting the model’s insufficiencies for long-term assessments, a new glacier dynamics model of intermediate complexity is developed, bridging catchment and glacier scales. This new model implements all major glacier processes, including ice movement, avalanching, sublimation and sub-debris melting. It is validated in one of the data-scarce Tarim River headwater catchments as well as the data-abundant Upper Rhone catchment, Switzerland. The model is then implemented in all five Tarim headwaters and calibrated to discharge, glacier hypsometry and mass balance, using an automatic multi-objective approach. The model provides a correction of the high mountain precipitation, a driving variable shown to be highly uncertain. It is then used to assess three IPCC climate change scenarios for the 21st century using an ensemble of eight global and one regional climate model. Impacts on glacier area and volume as well as discharge are explored, including their climate model and calibration parameter uncertainties. Results show current catchment precipitation to be 1.4–4.3 times greater than observation datasets suggest, a finding in-line with climate model simulations and remote sensing based datasets. Under a generally warmer and wetter climate, glacier cover is expected to recede and discharge may experience large increases as a consequence, especially in the near future. Uncertainties are large, however, mainly owing to climate model variability.

115. Microservices Patterns Recommendation based on Information Retrieval.

Abstract

Software developers encounter recurring problems during software development, which can be solved using proven solutions known as design patterns. Microservices architecture, a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) variant, presents common communication, deployment, and service definition challenges. However, selecting the appropriate design pattern from a vast pool of patterns to solve a problem is difficult for novice and experienced developers. This paper proposes a recommendation tool based on Information Retrieval (IR) to assist developers in choosing the suitable microservices pattern to solve a given problem. The tool leverages textual descriptions given by developers to provide relevant indications of microservices patterns. It has been evaluated using both toy and industrial problems, demonstrating promising results. The results showed that the tool was able to solve 60% of toy design problems, indicating that it can provide valuable and accurate recommendations. Furthermore, tests with industrial problems revealed that over 70% of the recommended patterns helped to address the problems at hand. Interviews with developers who work in the software industry corroborated the recommendation tool's effectiveness and practicality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We study the dispersion relation for parallel propagating ion-cyclotron (IC) waves in a dusty plasma, considering situations where the velocity dispersion along perpendicular direction is greater than along the parallel direction, and considering the use of product-bi-kappa (PBK) velocity distributions for the plasma particles. The results obtained by numerical solution of the dispersion relation, in a case with isotropic Maxwellian distributions for electrons and PBK distribution for ions, show the occurrence of the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron instability (EMIC), and show that the decrease in the kappa indexes of the PBK ion distribution leads to significant increase in the magnitude of the growth rates and in the range of wavenumber for which the instability occurs. On the other hand, for anisotropic Maxwellian distribution for ions and PBK distribution for electrons, the decrease of the kappa index in the PBK electron distribution contributes to reduce the growth rate of the EMIC instability, but the reduction effect is less pronounced than the increase obtained with ion PBK distribution with the same $\kappa$ index. The results obtained also show that, as a general rule, the presence of a dust population contributes to reduce the instability in magnitude of the growth rates and range, but that in the case of PBK ion distribution with small kappa indexes the instability may continue to occur for dust populations which would eliminate completely the instability in the case of bi-Maxwellian ion distributions. It has also been seen that the anisotropy due to the kappa indexes in the ion PBK distribution is not so efficient in producing the EMIC instability as the ratio of perpendicular and parallel ion temperatures, for equivalent value of the effective temperature., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

Abstract

We demonstrate the alignment-preserving transfer of parallel graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) onto insulating substrates. The photophysics of such samples is characterized by polarized Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The Raman scattered light and the PL are polarized along the GNR axis. The Raman cross section as a function of excitation energy has distinct excitonic peaks associated with transitions between the one-dimensional parabolic subbands. We find that the PL of GNRs is intrinsically low but can be strongly enhanced by blue laser irradiation in ambient conditions or hydrogenation in ultrahigh vacuum. These functionalization routes cause the formation of sp3 defects in GNRs. We demonstrate the laser writing of luminescent patterns in GNR films for maskless lithography by the controlled generation of defects. Our findings set the stage for further exploration of the optical properties of GNRs on insulating substrates and in device geometries.
