- Abstract
Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

- Abstract
Turkey's orchid flora is one of the richest in the Mediterranean region, but is also under threat from intensification of agriculture, land-use change, habitat loss, overgrazing and salep harvesting (tuber collection). With this study, we would like to draw attention to the importance of economic poplar plantations as orchid habitats. In six of the eight plantations surveyed in five provinces of Turkey, altogether 12 orchid species (Anacamptis elegans, A. fr agrans, A. pyramidalis, Cephalanthera longifolia, C. damasonium, Epipactis helleborine, E. persica, Himantoglossum jankae, Ophrys apifera, O. oestrifera, Ophrys sp., Serapias feldwegiana) were found. In the plantations with an average area of only 0.27 ± 0.21 hectares, the presence of 0-5 orchid species was recorded (mean ± SD = 1.88 ± 1.80). The density of orchid populations varied from 0 to 355.6 specimens per hectare. Both tuberous and rhizomatous orchids were encountered in the studied plantations, but the former ones were dominant: 8 species (67%) and 232 specimens (94%) of the studied orchids were tuberous. The average trunk diameter in poplar plantations harboring orchids ranged from 16.7 to 21.8 cm. In the surveyed plantations, there were no traces of tuber harvesting or overgrazing, which may contribute to their suitability as habitat for orchids. Considering the recent extent of poplar plantations and their expected further increase in Turkey, studying their role in orchid conservation seems important and timely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jelen közleményünk annak a sorozatnak a harmadik része, melynek célja a Magyarország edényes növényfajainak elterjedési atlasza térképeinek kiegészítése, főként aktuális előfordulási adatokkal.

Himantoglossum adriaticum is a rare and in many countries endangered orchid species. It grows on calcareous soils in natural and semi-natural, dry and mesophilic grasslands or open woodlands and is restricted to a small region along the Adriatic coast and within Central and Southeastern Europe. We compiled phytosociological relevés (n = 84) covering the whole distribution range to investigate its habitat preferences and collected soil samples from 41 relevés to determine various soil parameters. We then used a phytocoenological approach and ecological indicator values to characterize the vegetation. Our study revealed that H. adriaticum is growing in two major habitat types, significantly differing in herb and shrub cover. Beside its preference for semi-natural grasslands, H. adriaticum occurs in man-made secondary habitats, such as the roadsides and temporary habitats during secondary succession after land-use abandonment. Himantoglossum adriaticum is most frequently growing in grasslands which can be characterized as the secondary succession state of the Festuco-Brometea vegetation class. Based on these findings, we developed mean indicator values for H. adriaticum, which were missing for its whole distribution range.

Despite huge habitat losses caused by agricultural intensification, dry grasslands still represent one of the most diverse ecosystems in Europe. Their highly fragmented remnants are often pre-served in man-made or human-influenced habitats (e.g., kurgans, roadside verges or cemeteries). In recent decades the significance of cemeteries as suitable habitats for preserving native and rare spe-cies has been repeatedly emphasized. However, the effect of modern management practices on long-term persistence of grassland species has remained largely unexplored. Sternbergia colchiciflora Waldst. & Kit. is one of the very few threatened dry grassland specialists whose occurrence in the cemeteries of the Pannonian Basin has been known for more than a century. This hysteranthous, myrmecochorous geophyte is considered rare or sporadic within its whole distribution range. In a systematic botanical survey we investigated 154 cemeteries in the Pannonian part of its distribution area. Despite modern management of cemeteries, characterised by frequent and intensive motorised lawn mowing, we found populations of S. colchiciflora at 27 Hungarian localities and confirmed three formerly known occurrences in Serbia. To study the effect of regular mowing on the long-term survival prospects of S. colchiciflora populations, we quantified the species’ seed production (cap-sular seed number) in 9 mown and 15 unmown sites (290 and 235 specimens, respectively). The difference in seed number between the two groups was statistically insignificant (13.6±5.6 and 14.7±5.0, respectively). This result is probably due to the peculiar phenology and small stature of this species. Firstly, its annual life cycle above ground (from September to May) is out of the main mowing season. Secondly, its 3–7 cm tall flowers and fruits have a high chance of surviving the damaging effect of motorised mowing. Thirdly, it seems likely that the loss of leaf tips, i.e. a part of the assimilation surface, of this short-leaved (5–13 cm) species by mowing doesn’t affect the general condition of the damaged individuals. Our study emphasizes the role of Central European cemeteries (even if mown intensively) in preservation of characteristic dry grassland plant species.

† Background and Aims Lizard orchids of the genus Himantoglossum include many of Eurasia’s most spectacular orchids, producing substantial spikes of showy flowers. However, until recently the genus had received only limited, and entirely traditional, systematic study. The aim of the current work was to provide a more robust molecular phylogeny in order to better understand the evolutionary relationships among species of particular conservation concern. † Methods All putative species of Himantoglossum s.l. were sampled across its geographical range. A large subsample of the 153 populations studied contributed to an initial survey of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) ribotypes. Smaller subsets were then sequenced for four plastid regions and the first intron of the low-copy-number nuclear gene LEAFY. Rooted using Steveniella as outgroup, phylogenetic trees were generated using parsimony and Bayesian methods from each of the three datasets, supplemented with a ribotype network. † Key Results The resulting trees collectively determined the order of branching of the early divergent taxa as Himantoglossum comperianum . H. robertianum group . H. formosum, events that also involved significant morphological divergence. Relaxed molecular clock dating suggested that these divergences preceded the Pleistocene glaciations (the origin of the H. robertianum group may have coincided with the Messinian salinity crisis) and occurred in Asia Minor and/or the Caucasus. Among more controversial taxa of the H. hircinum-jankae clade, which are only subtly morphologically divergent, topological resolution was poorer and topological incongruence between datasets was consequently greater. † Conclusions Plastid sequence divergence is broadly consistent with prior, morphologically circumscribed taxa and indicates a division between H. hircinum–adriaticum to the west of the Carpathians and H. jankae–caprinum ( plus local endemics) to the east, a distinction also suggested by nrITS ribotypes. LEAFY phylogenies are less congruent with prior taxonomic arrangements and include one likely example of paralogy. Himantoglossum metlesicsianum fully merits its IUCN Endangered status. Potentially significant genetic variation was detected within Steveniella satyrioides, H. robertianum and H. hircinum. However, confident circumscription of the more derived species of Himantoglossum s.s., including local endemics of hybrid origin, must await future morphometric and populationgenetic analyses.

Epipactis albensis Novakova et Rydlo (Orchidaceae), a species previously undocumented in the flora of Ukraine, was found in three localities in this country (in vicinity of Chetfalva, Fanchykovo and Drotyntsi, Zakarpattia district) in 2012. The species (originally described from the Czech Republic) recently has only been known to exist in seven Central European countries. The three Ukrainian populations described here stretch within the floodplain of river Tisza. Based on measurements in 14 localities in Hungary, Ukraine and Romania the species has a considerably wide soil reaction tolerance (from 3.6 to 7.2 pHKCl). The fruit set of this strictly autogamous species is reasonably high (78%). The mean±SD thousand seed weight of the species was 0.0030±0.0005 grams, therefore E. albenis is classified into the hypermeichor seed-weight class. Recent discoveries of the species in Romania and Ukraine raise the possibility of its occurrence in further European countries.

SOCIAL attitudes , *PROFESSIONAL socialization , *MEDICAL students , *PROFESSIONALISM , *MENTAL health education - Abstract
Introduction: Medical students have been shown to experience mental health problems more frequently compared to their non-medical student peers. This can manifest in pathological levels of stress and depression, and can lead to substance abuse, reduced academic performance, or even suicide. Objectives: A credit course on professional socialization is offered for medical students at the University of Debrecen in the form of peer education. Our goal was to evaluate experiences of this course delivered in the past 5 academic years. Methods: After reviewing the relevant literature, the structure of a focus group interview was developed. The focus group consisted of 8 participants and was moderated by the course supervisor with the help of an assistant moderator. The group summarized the number of students completing the course, and narratives of teaching experiences between 2018/19 and 2022/23. They also revised relevant versions of the tutors' handbook containing the topics and methodology of the course. The duration of the interview was 90 minutes, and it was tape recorded by the assistant moderator, who also made notes in case the tape is inaudible. Results: Between 2018/19 and 2022/23 61 students finished the course with the help of 23 tutors. The course is offered for students of general medicine, dentistry and pharmacy to improve their positive professional attitudes and social skills through group work and practical exercises. The medical curriculum includes mandatory courses with practical opportunities for developing professional and social skills, but due to the limited number of contact hours and the varying levels of student interest and motivation, these skills are difficult to master. The credit course was developed using the concept of Bálint groups, offering peer-supervised opportunities for motivated students above year 2 to practice their professional skills in controlled conditions while also receiving feedback from their peer group leaders. The course complements the traditional medical curriculum and sensitizes students in a protected environment in which they can observe their own communication more consciously and recognize unfavourable behaviour patterns. Developing the ability to work in a team, learning to listen, and practicing assertiveness during study years can also reduce performance-related stress and future medical errors along with increasing job satisfaction and patient adherence. Conclusions: Based on the narrative summary of the focus group, both the experiences of participating students and peer teachers are positive, the handbook is a useful tool. The structured focus group provides a suitable method to evaluate the credit course which should be held once every academic year to evaluate the implemented course and explore options to improve future courses. Although hybridization has long been recognized as a major force driving speciation in land plants, it has not yet been evidenced in Astragalus, the largest angiosperm genus. Here, we reveal the possible contribution of hybridization to speciation in Astragalus by employing cloning of the nrDNA ITS region and sampling three plastid regions (ycf1, ndhF–rpl32, and rpl32–trnL) in taxa belonging to sect. Dissitiflori. Phylogenetic network and tree analyses uncovered various levels of intra-individual and intraspecific polymorphism of ITS in most of the taxa investigated. Two distantly related ribotype groups were found to be shared by the closely related polyploids Astragalus pallescens M.Bieb., Astragalus peterfii Jáv., and Astragalus pseudoglaucus Klokov suggesting ancient hybridization followed by incomplete lineage sorting (i.e., shared ancestral polymorphism) in nrDNA ITS. Reticulation is also invoked as an underlying evolutionary process behind the statistically highly supported incongruent placement of A. pseudoglaucus and Astragalus vesicarius subsp. pastellianus (Pollini) Arcang. in nuclear versus plastid phylogenies. The phylogenetic results also shed light on taxonomic controversies in the section, such as the false synonimization of A. peterfii under A. vesicarius s.l. Our results provide evidence for the (at least past) existence of speciation processes driven by hybridization in Astragalus.

Elatine L. contains ca. 25 small, herbaceous, annual species distributed in ephemeral waters in both hemispheres. All species are amphibious and characterized by a high degree of morphological variability. The importance of seed morphology in Elatine taxonomy has been emphasized by many authors. The degree of seed curvature and seed coat reticulation have been traditionally considered very important in recognizing individual species of this genus. Seed morphometric characteristics of 10 Elatine species, including all European native taxa, are provided on the basis of material from two or three populations of each species. A total of 24–50 seeds were studied from each population, altogether 1,260 images were used for the morphometric study. In total, six parameters were measured from SEM pictures: object surface area, profile specific perimeter (object circuit), rectangle of the object (a) length, rectangle of the object (b) width, angle of the seed curvature, and number of pits in the seed coat counted in the middle row. Our study shows that the range of morphological variation of seeds in European species of Elatine is great, both between the species and the populations. Discrimination analysis showed that all six traits significantly differentiate the populations studied (λ = 0.001, p
