Abstract

Huanglongbing (HLB), a deadly citrus disease which has significantly downsized the entire industry worldwide. The intractable and incurable disease has brought the citriculture an enormous loss of productivity. With no resistant varieties available, failure of chemical treatments despite repeated applications, and hazardous consequences to environmental health, have led to large-scale research to find a sustainable cure. Inside plants, the key determinants of health and safety, live the endophytic microbes. Endophytes possess unrivaled plant benefiting properties. The progression of HLB is known to cause disturbance in endophytic bacterial communities. Given the importance of the plant endophytic microbiome in disease progression, the notion of engineering microbiomes through indigenous endophytes is attracting scientific attention which is considered revolutionary as it precludes the incompatibility concerns associated with the use of alien (microbes from other plant species) endophytes. In this review, we briefly discuss the transformation of the plant-pathogen-environment to the plant-pathogen-microbial system in a disease triangle. We also argue the employment of indigenous endophytes isolated from a healthy state to engineer the diseased citrus endophytic microbiomes that can provide sustainable solution for vascular pathogens. We evaluated the plethora of microbiomes responses to the re-introduction of endophytes which leads to disease resistance in the citrus host. The idea is not merely confined to citrus-HLB, but it is globally applicable for tailoring a customized cure for general plant-pathogen systems particularly for the diseases caused by the vascular system-restricted pathogens. 103. Exercise reduces arterial pressure augmentation through vasodilation of muscular arteries in humans

Abstract

Exercise markedly influences pulse wave morphology, but the mechanism is unknown. We investigated whether effects of exercise on the arterial pulse result from alterations in stroke volume or pulse wave velocity (PWV)/large artery stiffness or reduction of pressure wave reflection. Healthy subjects (n = 25) performed bicycle ergometry, with workload increasing from 25 to 150 W for 12 min. Digital arterial pressure waveforms were recorded using a servo-controlled finger cuff. Radial arterial pressure waveforms and carotid-femoral PWV were determined by applanation tonometry. Stroke volume was measured by echocardiography, and brachial and femoral artery blood flows and diameters were measured by ultrasound. Digital waveforms were recorded continuously. Other measurements were made before and after exercise. Exercise markedly reduced late systolic and diastolic augmentation of the peripheral pressure pulse. At 15 min into recovery, stroke volume and PWV were similar to baseline values, but changes in pulse wave morphology persisted. Late systolic augmentation index (radial pulse) was reduced from 54 [+ or -] 3.9% at baseline to 42 [+ or -] 3.7% (P < 0.01), and diastolic augmentation index (radial pulse) was reduced from 37 [+ or -] 1.8% to 25 [+ or -] 2.9% (P < 0.001). These changes were accompanied by an increase in femoral blood flow (from 409 [+ or -] 44 to 773 [+ or -] 48 ml/min, P < 0.05) and an increase in femoral artery diameter (from 8.2 [+ or -] 0.4 to 8.6 [+ or -] 0.4 mm, P < 0.05). Abstract

We study a spin-ice Kondo lattice model on a breathing pyrochlore lattice with classical localized spins. The highly efficient kernel polynomial expansion method, together with a classical Monte Carlo method, is employed in order to study the magnetic phase diagram at four representative values of the number density of itinerant electrons. We tune the breathing mode by varying the hopping ratio -- the ratio of hopping parameters for itinerant electrons along inequivalent paths. Several interesting magnetic phases are stabilized in the phase diagram parameterized by the hopping ratio, Kondo coupling, and electronic filling fraction, including an "all-in/all-out" ordered spin configuration phase, spin-ice, ordered phases containing $16$ and $32$ spin sites in the magnetic unit cell, as well as a disordered phase at small values of the hopping ratio., 9 pages and 9 figures. 122. Cangrelor versus ticagrelor in patients treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention: impact on platelet activity, myocardial microvascular function and infarct size: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Background: Oral P2Y12 inhibitors take more than 2 hours to achieve full effect in healthy subjects and this action is further delayed in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Intravenous P2Y12 inhibition might lead to more timely and potent anti-platelet effect in the context of emergency primary angioplasty, improving myocardial recovery. Objectives: This article compares the efficacy of intravenous cangrelor versus ticagrelor in a ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) population treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). Materials and Methods: In an open-label, prospective, randomized controlled trial, 100 subjects with STEMI were assigned 1:1 to intravenous cangrelor or oral ticagrelor. The co-primary endpoints were platelet P2Y12 inhibition at infarct vessel balloon inflation time, 4 and 24 hours. Secondary endpoints included indices of coronary microcirculatory function: index of microvascular resistance (IMR), initial infarct size (troponin at 24 hours) and final infarct size at 12 weeks (cardiac magnetic resonance). Secondary endpoints included indices of coronary microcirculatory function (index of microvascular resistance [IMR]), initial infarct size (troponin at 24 hours), final infarct size at 12 weeks (cardiac magnetic resonance), corrected thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) frame count, TIMI flow grade, myocardial perfusion grade, and ST-segment resolution (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02733341). Results: P2Y12 inhibition at first balloon inflation time was significantly greater in cangrelor-treated patients (cangrelor P2Y12 reaction unit [PRU] 145.2 ± 50.6 vs. ticagrelor 248.3 ± 55.1). There was no difference in mean PRU at 4 and 24 to 36 hours post-dosing. IMR, final infarct size, angiographic and electrocardiographic measures of reperfusion were all similar between groups. Conclusion: Cangrelor produces more potent P2Y12 inhibition at the time of first coronary balloon inflation time compared with ticagrelor. Despite this enhanced P2Y12 inhibition, coronary microvascular function and final infarct size did not differ between groups.

Abstract

We study the classical Heisenberg model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland (SS) lattice with additional Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of an external magnetic field. We show that several noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic phases, such as the flux, all-in/all-out, 3in-1out/3out-1in, and canted-flux phases are stabilized over wide ranges of parameters in the presence of the DM interaction. We discuss the role of DM interaction in stabilizing these complex magnetic phases. When coupled to these noncoplanar magnetic phases, itinerant electrons experience a finite Berry phase, which manifests in the form of topological Hall effect, whereby a non-zero transverse conductivity is observed even in the absence of a magnetic field. We study this anomalous magneto-transport by calculating the electron band structure and transverse conductivity for a wide range of parameter values, and demonstrate the existence of topological Hall effect in the SS lattice. We explore the role of the strength of itinerant electron-local moment coupling on electron transport and show that the topological Hall features evolve significantly from strong to intermediate values of the coupling strength, and are accompanied by the appearance of a finite spin Hall conductivity., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We investigate the necessary conditions for the emergence of complex, noncoplanar magnetic configurations in a Kondo lattice model with classical local moments on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice and their evolution in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that topologically nontrivial spin textures, including a new canted flux state, with nonzero scalar chirality arise dynamically from realistic short-range interactions. Our results establish that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is necessary for the emergence of these novel magnetic states when the system is at half filling, for which the ground state is insulating. We identify the minimal set of DM vectors that are necessary for the stabilization of chiral magnetic phases. The noncoplanarity of such structures can be tuned continually by applying an external magnetic field. This is the first part in a series of two papers; in the following paper the effects of frustration, thermal fluctuations, and magnetic field on the emergence of novel noncollinear states at metallic filling of itinerant electrons are discussed. Abstract

We study the Kondo lattice Shastry-Sutherland model with additional Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya(DM) interactions, exploring the possible magnetic phases in its multi-dimensional parameter space. Treating the local moments as classical spins and using a variational ansatz, we identify the parameter ranges over which various common magnetic orderings are potentially stabilized. Our results reveal that the competing interactions result in a heightened susceptibility towards a wide range of spin configurations including longitudinal ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order, coplanar flux configurations and most interestingly, multiple non-coplanar configurations including a novel canted-Flux state as the different Hamiltonian parameters like electron density, interaction strengths and degree of frustration are varied., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We explore the magnetic phases in a Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice at metallic electron densities, searching for noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures. Motivated by experimental observations in many rare-earth-based frustrated metallic magnets, we treat the local moments as classical spins and set the coupling between the itinerant electrons and local moments as the largest energy scale in the problem. Our results show that a noncollinear flux state is stabilized over an extended range of Hamiltonian parameters. These spin states can be quenched efficiently by external fields like temperature and magnetic field as well as by varying the degree of frustration in the electronic itinerancy and exchange coupling between local moments. Interestingly, unlike insulating electron densities that we discussed in paper I of this sequence, a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the local moments is not essential for the emergence of their noncollinear ordering., 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Strongly correlated electron systems in which there exists a subtle interplay between spin and charge degrees of freedom give rise to many novel and exotic phases. In these spin-charge coupled systems the itinerant electrons and localized moments affect each other in a self-consistent way. The magnetic interaction between the spins is mediated by the motion of electrons; on the other hand, the transport of these electrons is affected by the underlying spin textures. These systems when arranged on geometrically frustrated lattices stabilize topologically non-trivial chiral configurations of localized spins that drive unconventional transport phenomenon such as topological or geometrical Hall effect. The Shastry-Sutherland model with appropriate generalization is an excellent framework to study the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom on a frustrated geometry. Furthermore, such a model is directly relevant in understanding the transport of rare earth tetraborides – a family of metallic quantum magnets with underlying magnetic Shastry-Sutherland lattice. We investigate Shastry-Sutherland Kondo lattice model (SS-KLM) extensively in different parameter regimes for the ground state phases with unique topological properties using a suite of numerical methods. To reduce finite-size effects we have implemented two approximate methods truncated polynomial expansion method and traveling cluster approximation – the CPU time for both these methods scales linearly with the system size making it possible to explore larger lattice sizes. We present results for integer quantum Hall effect on Shastry-Sutherland lattice in the presence of longitudinal magnetic field. The strong frustration results in decreasing the width of plateaus in Hall conductivity while strong disorder leads to the disappearance of higher plateaus. The rise in temperature smooths out the steps in Hall conductivity making longitudinal conductivity non-zero over the whole range of Fermi energy. We establish the existence of several non-coplanar ground states in the phase diagram of SS-KLM using variational ansatz at T = 0. The previously unknown canted-Flux state is shown to be stabilized over wide range of parametric space in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Using unbiased Monte Carlo method we show that this complex ground state can be generated dynamically starting from random spin configurations even at non-zero but a finite value of temperature at half filling of itinerant electrons. Moreover, the non-coplanarity of such topologically non-trivial spin textures can be tuned using magnetic field. We also demonstrate that non-coplanar ground states are stabilized for n e = 1/4 and 3/4 against thermal fluctuations. Tuning the strength of frustration is shown to drive the system from canted Flux state through different intermediate topologically non-trivial states to topologically trivial anti ferromagnetic ground state. We show that the ground states with different topological character can be stabilized with the help of magnetic field. Our results are crucial in understanding the emergence of complex spin textures in metallic magnets and will be important in explaining the magnetic and electronic properties of the rare earth tetraboride family of frustrated metallic magnets. ​Doctor of Philosophy (SPMS)
