The article titled "A Novel Herbal Hydrogel Formulation of Moringa oleifera for Wound Healing" has been retracted by the journal Plants. Concerns were raised about overlapping figure panels in the article, specifically in Figure 2. An investigation conducted by the Editorial Office and Editorial Board confirmed the overlap and the authors were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation or verify the integrity of the image panels. As a result, the publication has been retracted in accordance with the journal's retraction policy and the Committee on Publication Ethics guidelines. Abstract

More than five decades have been invested in understanding glucose biosensors. Yet, this immensely versatile field has continued to gain attention from the scientific world to better understand and diagnose diabetes. However, such extensive work done to improve glucose sensing devices has still not yielded desirable results. Drawbacks like the necessity of the invasive finger‐pricking step and the lack of optimization of diagnostic interventions still need to be considered to improve the testing process of diabetic patients. To upgrade the glucose‐sensing devices and reduce the number of intermediary steps during glucose measurement, fourth‐generation glucose sensors (FGGS) have been introduced. These sensors, made using robust electrocatalytic copper nanostructures, improve diagnostic efficiency and cost‐effectiveness. This review aims to present the essential scientific progress in copper nanostructure‐based FGGS in the past 10 years (2010 to present). After a short introduction, we presented the working principles of these sensors. We then highlighted the importance of copper nanostructures as advanced electrode materials to develop reliable real‐time FGGS. Abstract

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring product used in the prevention and treatment of various diseases by acting as a potent defensive antioxidant. Resveratrol can be used in various fields, but the use is limited due to its poor solubility and hence low bioavailability. For overcoming this limitation, various drug delivery systems of resveratrol were developed. The aim of the novel drug delivery system (NDDS) is to provide a therapeutic amount of drug to the target site to maintain the desired drug concentration. NDDS enhances the duration of therapeutic activity, increases plasma half-life, decreases the immunogenicity, increases the stability of biopharmaceuticals, improves the solubility of low molecular weight drugs so does the bioavailability, and has a potential of targeted drug delivery. However, they have their own advantages as well as limitations. This chapter focuses on: (1) general introduction to resveratrol and its various therapeutic uses, (2) pharmacokinetic- and bioavailability-related problems of resveratrol, and (3) general about various NDDS used in resveratrol formulations.

Abstract

Background The human body is a home to thousands of microbiotas. It is defined as a community of symbiotic, commensal and pathogenic microorganisms that have existed in all exposed sites of the body, which have co-evolved with diet, lifestyle, genetic factors and immune factors. Human microbiotas have been studied for years on their effects with relation to health and diseases. Methods Relevant published studies, literature and reports were searched from accessible electronic databases and related institutional databases. We used keywords, viz; microbiome, microbiota, microbiome drug delivery and respiratory disease. Selected articles were carefully read through, clustered, segregated into subtopics and reviewed. Findings The traditional belief of sterile lungs was challenged by the emergence of culture-independent molecular techniques and the recently introduced invasive broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) sampling method. The constitution of a lung microbiome mainly depends on three main ecological factors, which include; firstly, the immigration of microbes into airways, secondly, the removal of microbes from airways and lastly, the regional growth conditions. In healthy conditions, the microbial communities that co-exist in our lungs can build significant pulmonary immunity and could act as a barrier against diseases, whereas, in an adverse way, microbiomes may interact with other pathogenic bacteriomes and viromes, acting as a cofactor in inflammation and host immune responses, which may lead to the progression of a disease. Thus, the use of microbiota as a target, and as a drug delivery system in the possible modification of a disease state, has started to gain massive attention in recent years. Abstract

Oligonucleotide-based therapies are advanced novel interventions used in the management of various respiratory diseases such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). These agents primarily act by gene silencing or RNA interference. Better methodologies and techniques are the need of the hour that can deliver these agents to tissues and cells in a target specific manner by which their maximum potential can be reached in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases. Nanoparticles play an important role in the target-specific delivery of drugs. In addition, oligonucleotides also are extensively used for gene transfer in the form of polymeric, liposomal and inorganic carrier materials. Therefore, the current review focuses on various novel dosage forms like nanoparticles, liposomes that can be used efficiently for the delivery of various oligonucleotides such as siRNA and miRNA. We also discuss the future perspectives and targets for oligonucleotides in the management of respiratory diseases.

Abstract

Aim: In this study, curcumin was encapsulated in niosomes (Nio-Curc) to increase its effectiveness for the treatment of asthma. Materials & methods: The formulation underwent various physicochemical characterization experiments, an in vitro release study, molecular simulations and was evaluated for in vitro anti-inflammatory activity. Results: Results showed that Nio-Curc had a mean particle size of 284.93 ± 14.27 nm, zeta potential of -46.93 and encapsulation efficacy of 99.62%, which demonstrates optimized physicochemical characteristics. Curcumin release in vitro could be sustained for up to 24 h. Additionally, Nio-Curc effectively reduced mRNA transcript expression of pro-inflammatory markers; IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β and TNF-α in immortalized human airway basal cell line (BCi-NS1.1). Conclusion: In this study, we have demonstrated that Nio-Curc mitigated the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory markers in an in vitro study, which could be applied to treatment of asthma with further studies. Abstract

Nanogels are functional particles that may be used to deliver bioactive molecules in targeted drug delivery systems. In the present work, we have investigated the preparation of cisplatin (CP) loaded Tragacanth Gum (TG)-lecithin (LC) nanogels by nanoemulsion process. These nanogels exhibit polygonal core-shell structure in which CP particles are embedded in the TG core of the nanogels and remain covered by LC as shell. Varying concentration of CP were added in the nanogel and the shape and size of the nanogels was investigated. Nanogels were characterized by dynamic light scattering analysis as well. Sustained release of CP from the CP-loaded nTG-LC nanogels as drug was observed in controlled manner under physiological saline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Graft polymerization of itaconic acid on tragacanth gum (TG) was carried out using potassium persulfate as initiator to develop smart hydrogels for drug delivery systems. The effect of the grafting parameters on the degree of grafting was investigated. The grafting was significantly influenced by the reaction medium, the reaction temperature and the monomer concentration. The monomer dependency of the system was found to be 1.52. The hydrogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray diffraction. The grafted TG had an amorphous nature and exhibited excellent swelling in water and strong dependence on the pH of the medium. The grafted TG showed pH‐dependent release of ciprofloxacin which offers the possibility of using these materials in colon‐specific drug targeting for human healthcare systems. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry Graft polymerization of itaconic acid on tragacanth gum leads to the development of a smart hydrogel which shows excellent pH‐dependency in aqueous systems. The swelling of the matrix showed much higher water uptake at higher pH due to dissociation of carboxyl groups that exert repulsion among the polymer chains and allow more water to penetrate. Abstract

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), the primary causative organism in corona virus disease‐19 (COVID‐19) infections, is a novel member of the human coronavirus family which was first identified in Wuhan, China, towards the end of 2019. This letter reveals new vital missing links in our current understanding of the mechanisms that lead to cell death triggered by ferroptotic stress in COVID‐19 infection. It further reveal the importance of homocysteine mediated trans‐sulfuration pathway in COVID‐19 infection. Hence, Vitamin B6, folic acid, and Vitamin B12 should be incorporated in the treatment regimen for SARS CoV‐2 infections to suppress complications, as the virus mediates altered host cell metabolism.
