Properly chosen soil management practices can stabilize the nutrient regime in the soil, including the mobility and bioavailability of hazardous elements. This study aimed to identify the optimal soil management practices in a productive vineyard on Rendzic Leptosol in the Nitra wine region (Slovakia). Soil samples were collected each spring from two depths, 0–30 cm, and 30–60 cm, with the following treatments: T—soil tillage, P + FYM—plowed farmyard manure, G—grass strips, G + NPK1—first-level fertilization, and G + NPK2—second-level fertilization, from 2019 to 2023. The results indicated that more pronounced changes in soil properties occurred in the 0–30 cm layer. Higher NPK rates significantly affected soil sorption capacity and decreased soil pH when compared to other treatments. While G + NPK2 showed the highest storage of total N, S, P, K, and available P and K, it exhibited the lowest levels of total and available Ca. The T treatment displayed the lowest storage of C, N, S, P, and available K. In terms of hazardous metals (Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) none exceeded the limiting values in any of the soil management practices. However, in the 0–30 cm layer, Cu concentrations exceeded the limits set by Slovak Republic regulations in the T, P + FYM, G, G + NPK1, and G + NPK2 treatments by 62.6, 73.7, 70.2, 82.1, and 102.9 mg kg−1, respectively. Additionally, as total C increased, Cr concentration was observed to decrease with correlation (r = −0.46). Pulp and paper production is one of the largest global industries producing annually 400 million metric tons of pulp and paper products and 6 million tons of pulp and paper biosludge (PPBS). From a resource efficiency and sustainability perspective, there is a need for improving PPBS management. This study assessed fermentation of PPBS as pretreatment to improve PPBS feasibility as feed for black soldier fly larvae. The impact of temperature, pH, and inoculum on the concentration of soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) was assessed. An initial pH of 10 and the addition of inoculum from an anaerobic digester substantially increased the concentration of sCOD. The obtained concentration of VFA was low compared to the VFA concentration needed to improve the growth of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). The PPBS is recalcitrant to fermentation because of the high content of lignocellulose. Fermentation as done in this study does not convert PPBS to a feasible feed for black soldier fly larvae; thus, further research on improved fermentation is needed. However, fermentation at alkaline pH and addition of inoculum do increase the final pH of PPBS which improves its feasibility as feed for BSFL. Future studies should explore pH > 10 and temperatures > 55 °C to increase sCOD and improving generation of VFA by removal of inhibiting substances, testing other types of inoculum (rumen microorganisms) and co-fermentation. Objective To our knowledge, there are few studies on the correlation between internal structure of fermented products and nutrient delivery from by-products from coffee processing in the ruminant system. The objective of this project was to use advanced mid-infrared vibrational spectroscopic technique (ATR-FT/IR) to reveal interactive correlation between protein internal structure and ruminant-relevant protein and energy metabolic profiles of by-products from coffee processing affected by added-microorganism fermentation duration. Methods The by-products from coffee processing were fermented using commercial fermentation product, called Saus Burger Pakan, consisting of various microorganisms: cellulolytic, lactic acid, amylolytic, proteolytic, and xylanolytic microbes, for 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Protein chemical profiles, Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System crude protein and CHO subfractions, and ruminal degradation and intestinal digestion of protein were evaluated. The attenuated total reflectance-Ft/IR (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was used to study protein structural features of spectra that were affected by added microorganism fermentation duration. The molecular spectral analyses were carried using OMNIC software. Molecular spectral analysis parameters in fermented and non-fermented by-products from coffee processing included: Amide I area (AIA), Amide II (AIIA) area, Amide I heigh (AIH), Amide II height (AIIH), α-helix height (αH), β-sheet height (βH), AIA to AIIA ratio, AIH to AIIH ratio, and αH to βH ratio. Biochar is the carbon-rich product obtained when biomass is anaerobically heated. In this study, different materials (corn straw and peanut shell) and pyrolysis temperatures (350, 450 and 550 °C) affect the elemental composition, surface structure, and biochar properties. The results showed that the carbon (C) content in biochar increased as the temperature increased, but hydrogen (H) and nitrogen (N) did not change. The alkane overpressure of corn straw and peanut shell increased first and then decreased with the increased temperature; the fatty alkyl chain disappeared, but the ash content increased at 550 °C. At high temperatures, the aromaticity (H/C ratio) and hydrophobicity (O/C ratio) of biochar become "carbon-rich particles", while the polarity (O + N)/C decreases significantly. The pore wall of biochar became thinner with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, the internal pore structure became larger, and a large number of micropores appeared in biochar. Biochar pyrolysed at 550 °C has much higher C, ash content, pore, and stronger buffering capacity, and thus is more promising to improve soil health.

While some studies regarding the effect of biofertilizers on plants, including their yield and quality, less is known about how they affect the soil properties, especially the microbial and enzymatic properties. Biofertilizers are promising for enhancing the nutrient availability in agricultural soils and reducing the reliance on inorganic fertilizers. The aim of this four-year-long field experiment was to assess the influence of the use of UGmax biofertilizer, which contains bacterial strains enhancing the soil phosphorus availability, e.g., the Pseudomonas spp. strains from Azotobacter and Penicillium genera, on the soil P forms and acid and alkaline phosphatase activity (AcP, AlP) in the surface soil horizon (Ap). Winter wheat was cultivated in 2005, 2006, and 2008, while winter rapeseed was cultivated in 2007 in a research area (2 hectare) that was selected for the investigation. These plants were selected because they are the main agricultural crops in Poland. UGmax was applied in three successive years after the plants had been harvested. One dose of the biofertilizer (0.7 L per hectare) was applied after the harvesting of wheat had been harvested (2005–2007), while the second dose (0.3 L per hectare) was applied as a top dressing in the spring, when the plants were beginning to grow (2006–2008). Forty soil samples were taken in 2005 (the control year without the application of UGmax). In the following years (2006–2008), 20 soil samples were taken from the area after the UGmax had been applied in the previous year, as well as 20 soil samples from the control area. A grid soil sampling technique (40 m × 25 m) was used to assess the changes in the soil properties across both of the studied areas. The soil samples were taken from the surface (Ap) horizon. Only at the end of the experiment (2008) did the application of UGmax remarkably increase the organic carbon (Corg) and total nitrogen (Nt) content, while the microbial biomass carbon (MBC) content was notably higher in the field with UGmax than in the control. The available P content (Pavail) was significantly higher in the field with UGmax compared to these without the biofertilizer in 2006 and 2008, while no considerable relation was noted for the total phosphorus (Ptot) and water soluble P (Pwater) content in any of the study years. Over the entire period of the experiment, the AcP and AlP were notably lower in the soil samples that were collected from the UGmax field compared to that of the control soil. It was concluded that the application of UGmax exhibited a phosphate-solubilizing activity that could be an encouraging attitude for increasing P bioavailability in arable fields and that further studies ought to be carried out under different soil and climatic conditions in order to confirm such a phenomenon. Kenaf, also known as Deccan hemp (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is the one of the most important, hardy and economic bast fiber industrial crops. Sulfur plays a significant role in determining yield and quality of fiber crops. However, the effect of sulfur application on yield, nutrient uptake in kenaf varieties, agronomic efficiency, apparent S recovery, and nutrient availability and sulfur fractions is still unclear. Thus, the present investigation was carried out to study the effect of sulfur (S) fertilization (S0= Control, S15=15kg S ha−1, S30=30kg S ha−1, S45=45kg S ha−1) on fiber yield, nutrient uptake, nutrient availability and S fractions of experimental soil and to screen the kenaf varieties ('JBM-2004-D', 'MT-150', 'AMC-108' and 'HC-583') for higher S use efficiency and increased productivity. Compared to control (S0), S45 treatment significantly increased fiber yield of kenaf by 37%. MT-150 produced the highest fiber yield (2.61 t ha−1). Among the S levels, S45 exhibited lowest value of agronomic efficiency (16.5 kg kg−1 S), apparent S recovery (18.7%) and highest value of nutrient uptake in kenaf. Results also revealed that nutrient availability (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) increased with increase in S levels at all soil depths and the nutrient status decreased with depth. Sulfur fractions (total S, organic S, adsorbed S, plant available S) increased with increasing S levels and followed the order as organic S > non-sulfate S > adsorbed S > plant available S. In addition, organic sulfur contributed 63–74% of total sulfur. Thus, the results suggest that by selecting appropriate variety and level of sulfur (@ 30 kg ha−1) for kenaf cultivation farmers can obtain higher fiber yield for sustainable crop production. Soil plays a vital role in agriculture by providing essential nutrients, water, and support for crop growth. Therefore, the maintenance of healthy soil is imperative for the sustainability of agriculture and the assurance of food security. However, soil quality has been undermined by a range of factors, encompassing adverse environmental conditions, the impact of climate change, and inappropriate human activities. To address these issues, soil conditioners have been used to remedy soil quality. Alginate, a polysaccharide derived from brown algae, emerges as a promising soil conditioner due to its attributes of being biodegradable, non-toxic, cost-effective, easy to handle, and capable of forming gels with ease. When employed as soil conditioners, both alginate and its derivatives have demonstrated the capacity to enhance water retention in soil, augment nutrient availability, improve soil structure, and offer effective mulch films. This review aims to provide a comprehensive discussion on the utilization of alginate as a soil conditioner, covering alginate's properties, mechanisms of action, and diverse applications to enhancing soil quality and agricultural productivity. Background: Plant-beneficial bacterial inoculants are of great interest in agriculture as they have the potential to promote plant growth and health. However, the inoculation of the rhizosphere microbiome often results in a suboptimal or transient colonization, which is due to a variety of factors that influence the fate of the inoculant. To better understand the fate of plant-beneficial inoculants in complex rhizosphere microbiomes, composed by hundreds of genotypes and multifactorial selection mechanisms, controlled studies with high-complexity soil microbiomes are needed. Results: We analysed early compositional changes in a taxa-rich natural soil bacterial community under both exponential nutrient-rich and stationary nutrient-limited growth conditions (i.e. growing and stable communities, respectively) following inoculation with the plant-beneficial bacterium Pseudomonas protegens in a bulk soil or a wheat rhizosphere environment. P. protegens successfully established under all conditions tested and was more abundant in the rhizosphere of the stable community. Nutrient availability was a major factor driving microbiome composition and structure as well as the underlying assembly processes. While access to nutrients resulted in communities assembled mainly by homogeneous selection, stochastic processes dominated under the nutrient-deprived conditions. We also observed an increased rhizosphere selection effect under nutrient-limited conditions, resulting in a higher number of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) whose relative abundance was enriched. The inoculation with P. protegens produced discrete changes, some of which involved other Pseudomonas. Direct competition between Pseudomonas strains partially failed to replicate the observed differences in the microbiome and pointed to a more complex interaction network. Conclusions: The results of this study show that nutrient availability is a major driving force of microbiome composition, structure and diversity in both the bulk soil and the wheat rhizosphere and determines the assembly processes that govern early microbiome development. The successful establishment of the inoculant was facilitated by the wheat rhizosphere and produced discrete changes among other members of the microbiome. Introduction: The evolution and maintenance of plant polymorphism have always received much attention. Gender diphasy is a rare sexual system. Plant individuals with gender diphasy can adjust the resource allocation of different functional organs according to the changes of environmental conditions to regulate the sex expression of individuals, and the sex expression can be converted between years. However, our understanding of sex expression in plants is still very insufficient. In this study, we explored whether the perennial plant Lilium concolor var. megalanthum has a gender diphasy system and whether environmental resource availability affects its resource allocation and sex expression. Method: By collecting the bulbs of two sexual phenotypes (male and hermaphrodite) in the field and simulating the application of different levels of nutrients under the same habitat conditions, the growth and reproduction indexes and sex expression of plants in two years (2021 and 2022) were measured to evaluate the resource allocation strategy and sex expression pattern of Lilium concolor var. megalanthum. Results: We found that the sex expression of Lilium concolor var. megalanthum was variable in continuous years. Under limited resources, Lilium concolor var. megalanthum increases the biomass resources of the leaves and has a longer flowering period. Resource availability regulates the growth, reproduction and sex expression of Lilium concolor var. megalanthum. Bulb size is the main factor affecting its growth, reproduction and sex expression after accumulating sufficient resources. Discussion: This study confirms that Lilium concolor var. megalanthum has gender diphasy system. There is a strong trade-off between growth and reproduction under limited resources. Nutrient levels can regulate the reproduction and sex expression process of Lilium concolor var. megalanthum. Soil acidity is a major problem of agriculture in many parts of the world. Soil acidity causes multiple problems such as nutrient deficiency, elemental toxicity and adverse effects on biological characteristics of soil, resulting in decreased crop yields and productivity. Although a number of conventional strategies including liming and use of organic and inorganic fertilizers are suggested for managing soil acidity but cost-effective and sustainable amendments are not available to address this problem. Currently, there is increasing interest in using biochar, a form of biomass derived pyrogenic carbon, for managing acidity while improving soil health and fertility. However, biochar varies in properties due to the use of wide diversity of biomass, variable production conditions and, therefore, its application to different soils can result in positive, neutral and or negative effects requiring an in-depth understanding of biochar-acid soil interactions to achieve the best possible outcomes. Here, we present a comprehensive synthesis of the current literature on soil acidity management using biochar. Synthesis of literature showed that biochars, enriched with minerals (i.e., usually produced at higher temperatures), are the most effective at increasing soil pH, basic cation retention and promoting plant growth and yield. Moreover, the mechanism of soil acidity amelioration with biochar amendments varies biochar types, i.e., high temperature biochars with liming effects and low temperature biochars with proton consumption on their functional groups. We also provide the mechanistic interactions between biochar, plant and soils. The connection between soil nitrogen availability, leaf nitrogen, and photosynthetic capacity is not perfectly understood. Because these three components tend to be positively related over large spatial scales, some posit that soil nitrogen positively drives leaf nitrogen, which positively drives photosynthetic capacity. Alternatively, others posit that photosynthetic capacity is primarily driven by above-ground conditions. Here, we examined the physiological responses of a non-nitrogen-fixing plant (Gossypium hirsutum) and a nitrogen-fixing plant (Glycine max) in a fully factorial combination of light by soil nitrogen availability to help reconcile these competing hypotheses. Soil nitrogen stimulated leaf nitrogen in both species, but the relative proportion of leaf nitrogen used for photosynthetic processes was reduced under elevated soil nitrogen in all light availability treatments due to greater increases in leaf nitrogen content than chlorophyll and leaf biochemical process rates. Leaf nitrogen content and biochemical process rates in G. hirsutum were more responsive to changes in soil nitrogen than those in G. max , probably due to strong G. max investments in root nodulation under low soil nitrogen. Nonetheless, whole-plant growth was significantly enhanced by increased soil nitrogen in both species. Light availability consistently increased relative leaf nitrogen allocation to leaf photosynthesis and whole-plant growth, a pattern that was similar between species. These results suggest that the leaf nitrogen–photosynthesis relationship varies under different soil nitrogen levels and that these species preferentially allocated more nitrogen to plant growth and non-photosynthetic leaf processes, rather than photosynthesis, as soil nitrogen increased. An incubation experiment was conducted in laboratory conditions for 60 days to observe the impact of different Magnesium fertilizers on soil chemical properties, i.e. pH, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and DTPA extractable micronutrient cations. A complete factorial complete randomized block design (FCRD)with two replications and six levels was selected as the experimental layout. The levels included were (L0) Absolute control (L1) soil + Mg @ 10 kg ha-1, (L2) soil + Mg @ 20 kg ha-1, (L3) soil + 30 kg ha-1, (L4) soil + 40 kg ha-1, (L5) soil + 50 kg ha-1. Findings revealed that applying magnesium fertilizers to soil significantly (p ≤ 0.05) affects soil parameters. The impacts of magnesium fertilization on soil pH altered with sources and incubation period. The application of CaMg(CO3)2 @ 50 kg ha-1 recorded significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher soil pH (5.67) as compared to MgCO3 @ 50 kg ha-1 that increased the pH up to 5.57 due to the impact of carbonate ion whereas MgSO4.7H2O decreased the soil up to 4.80 because of dissolution of SO42- ions to the soil solution. Applying CaMg(CO3)2 significantly (p ≤ 0.05) influenced soil available N, P, K, Fe, Mn, and Cu content which is due to the decrease in acidity, which indirectly enhanced the nutrient availability. The positive effects persisted throughout the experimental duration, indicating the potential long-term benefits of magnesium fertilization in acid soil management. This study contributes to the current body of knowledge by providing novel insights into applying magnesium fertilizers as an effective strategy for addressing soil acidity and improving nutrient availability in acid soil. Root exudation fulfills fundamental roles in regulating carbon (C)-nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems, yet the main ecological drivers of root exudation and underlying mechanisms in forests under natural gradients remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the intraspecific variation of root exudation rates in two alpine coniferous forests (Abies faxoniana Rehder et Wilson and Abies georgei Orr) along two elevation gradients on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Meanwhile, the fine root traits and associated climate and soil parameters were assessed to examine the effects of elevation-dependent changes in climatic and soil nutrient conditions on root exudation. Results showed that root exudation rates decreased with increasing elevation and were positively correlated with mean air temperature. However, the relationships of root exudation with soil moisture and soil nitrogen availability were not significant. The structural equation model (SEM) further revealed that air temperature affected root exudation both directly and indirectly through the effects on fine root morphology and biomass, implying that the adaption of root C allocation and fine root morphological traits to low temperatures primarily resulted in declined root exudation at higher elevations. These results highlight the perceived importance of temperature in determining the elevational variation of root exudation in alpine coniferous forests, which has foreseeably great implications for the exudate-mediated ecosystem C and nutrient processes in the face of drastic warming on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Increasing use of saline water resources for irrigation of agricultural lands, especially in arid and semi-arid areas, in addition to the accumulation of salts in the soil, has caused the loss of various properties of the soil and reduced the yield of agricultural products. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) by producing different compounds can improve soil properties and reduce the negative effects of salinity stress on soil and plants function. In this study, the effect of PGPR [Control (PGPR0), Pseudomonas sp. 1 (PGPR1) and Pseudomonas sp. 2 (PGPR2)] and different levels of irrigation water salinity (0, 5 and 10 dS.m-1) on some soil properties in the rhizosphere of pistachio seedlings was investigated. The results showed that with the increase in irrigation water salinity, the amount of electrical conductivity (EC), soluble forms of sodium (Nas) and magnesium (Mgs), sodium absorption ratio (SAR), HCO3 and soil moisture content (Өm) increased by 3.8 times, 5.2 times, 2.5 times, 2.3 times, 23% and 59%, respectively, but the amount of pH, available phosphorus (AP) and organic matter (OM) decreased by 2%, 25% and 20%, respectively. However, treatment with PGPRs increased the content of AP (35-78%), available potassium (10-18%), OM (18-29%) and Өm (48%) and decreased the content of Nas (12-14%), ECe (10-12%), pH (3%) and SAR (14%) in different irrigation water salinity levels. Regarding to the presented result, using salt-tolerant bacteria in agricultural lands with saline water and soil can mitigate the negative effects of salinity stress on soil properties. Climate change is increasing the frequency and magnitude of temperature anomalies that cause coral bleaching, leading to widespread mortality of stony corals that can fundamentally alter reef structure and function. However, bleaching often is spatially variable for a given heat stress event, and drivers of this heterogeneity are not well resolved. While small-scale experiments have shown that excess nitrogen can increase the susceptibility of a coral colony to bleaching, we lack evidence that heterogeneity in nitrogen pollution can shape spatial patterns of coral bleaching across a seascape. Using island-wide surveys of coral bleaching and nitrogen availability within a Bayesian hierarchical modeling framework, we tested the hypothesis that excess nitrogen interacts with temperature anomalies to alter coral bleaching for the two dominant genera of branching corals in Moorea, French Polynesia. For both coral genera, Pocillopora and Acropora, heat stress primarily drove bleaching prevalence (i.e., the proportion of colonies on a reef that bleached). In contrast, the severity of bleaching (i.e., the proportion of an individual colony that bleached) was positively associated with both heat stress and nitrogen availability for both genera. Importantly, nitrogen interacted with heat stress to increase bleaching severity up to twofold when nitrogen was high and heat stress was relatively low. Our finding that excess nitrogen can trigger severe bleaching even under relatively low heat stress implies that mitigating nutrient pollution may enhance the resilience of coral communities in the face of mounting stresses from global climate change.

Intensive land use in the long term can cause land degradation, affecting soil fertility, especially on Vertic Endoaquepts in Pati that have been managed as rainfed rice fields. The characteristics of rainfed rice fields are low nutrient availability and rice yields. This study aimed to determine the effect of tillage depth management and soil ameliorants on nutrient availability, plant uptake, and rice yield in rainfed rice fields. The field experiment that was conducted at farmer’s field used a split-plot design. The main plot was the treatment of tillage depth treatments (OT), with depths of 10 cm (T1) and 20 cm (T2). The subplots were ameliorant treatments (A), consisting of A1 = sugarcane leaf compost, A2 = rice straw compost, A3 = chicken manure, and A4 = cow manure, with each dose of 5 t ha-1. The Inpari 32 rice variety was grown for 95 days. Available N, P and K of the soil were measured at 0, 62, and 94 days after transplanting (DAT). Plant N, P, and K contents, plant height, number of tillers, and rice yield were measured at 62 DAT. The results showed that the interaction of soil depth and ameliorant significantly affected soil available P and K but had no significant effect on soil available N. Ameliorant treatment of cow manure significantly increased rice yield.

Adding biochar to soil can alter soil properties and thus affect plant growth; however, the effect of biochar on biological nitrogen fixation, carbon accumulation and water-use efficiency of chickpea in tropical soils is not fully understood. Therefore, this study assessed the efficacy of biochar derived from poultry litter (denoted as PLB) and acacia (denoted as ACB) feedstocks on biological nitrogen fixation, carbon accumulation and water-use efficiency (δ13C) of chickpea grown in three contrasting soils of Fernwood (Arenosol) and Griffin (Helvic Acrisol) and Pinedene (Gleyic Acrisol). The biochars were applied at the rate of 0.5%, 1% and 2% (w/w) with control (0%) and replicated four times. Chickpeas grown in PLB treatments in Griffin and Pinedene soils investigated accumulated more N and C, for greater biomass production, resulting in an average total N-fixed of 77 and 52 mg N/plant, respectively. Nitrogen fixation and carbon accumulation of chickpea increased by the addition of 0.5% PLB and ACB in the Fernwood soil. The findings of this study demonstrate the potential of improving N inputs through biological nitrogen fixation with poultry litter biochar application in soils with varying nutrient status and texture, which is important in arid environments with limited N inputs.

Introduction: Clonal integration of connected ramets within clones is an important ecological advantage. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the effects of clonal integration on performance of donor and recipient ramets when one resource is heterogeneous can be influenced by the availability of another resource of donor ramets. Methods: We conducted a greenhouse experiment on the widespread, perennial herb Glechoma longituba. Clonal fragments consisting of pairs of connected ramets were grown for seven weeks. The younger, apical ramets were exposed under 30% or 100% light condition and the older, basal ramets were treated with three levels of nutrients. The connections between ramets were either severed or left intact. 30% light condition negatively affected the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. Results: Clonal integration significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, but decreased the growth of the basal ramets. Medium and high level nutrient availability of basal ramets significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. At the high nutrient level, the reduction in growth of basal ramets from clonal integration was decreased, but the growth responses of apical ramets and the whole fragments to clonal integration were not influenced by nutrient availability. Conclusion: The results suggested that clonal integration was benefit to the growth of apical ramets of Glechoma longituba but at the cost of reducing the growth of basal ramets. Although the high nutrient level could reduce the cost that clonal integration brought to the unshaded basal ramets, but could not increase the benefit that clonal integration brought to the shaded apical ramets and whole fragment. Quantifying the importance of pollination intensity and nutrient availability in influencing phenotypic selection on floral traits is an essential step to understanding floral evolutionary responses in complex environments. We quantified phenotypic selection on four floral traits (flowering start date, angle between adjacent flowers, corolla size and number of flowers) in Spiranthes sinensis by manipulating both pollination intensity and N–P–K nutrient availability under a factorial design: pollination intensity (low, medium and high levels, by manipulating the number of days the flowers were open to insect pollination) × N–P–K nutrient addition (low and high, representing natural nutrient levels and nutrient addition, respectively). There was an interactive effect of pollination intensity and nutrient availability on directional selection on corolla size. Selection for larger corolla size through female fitness was observed at medium and low pollination intensities. Selection for larger corolla size through pollen removal was observed in the treatment combining of low level of pollination intensity and natural nutrient levels. Selection for a greater number of flowers was observed in all treatment combinations through both female fitness and pollen removal functions. The results demonstrated that pollination intensity and nutrient availability influenced the opportunity for selection. The opportunity for selection increased in the low level of pollination intensity treatment, but high nutrient addition treatment reduced it. Our study suggests the context-dependence of natural selection in driving floral evolution and emphasizes the need for more studies with a combined focus on abiotic and biotic factors. ABSTRACT The nucleolus has emerged as a central hub for nuclear functions in eukaryotes. Studies in mammals and the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that the nucleolus is pivotal to nuclear functions other than ribosome biogenesis. Importantly, rDNA transcription and ribosome assembly were shown to positively correlate with the size of the nucleolus. However, little is known about the nucleolus of filamentous fungi. Here, we investigated how the size and shape of nucleolus in the plant pathogenic filamentous fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, respond to nutrient conditions and infection-related development by monitoring the nucleolar marker protein, MoNOP1 tagged with red fluorescent protein (MoNOP1-RFP). Our work revealed that in the hyphae of M. oryzae, the nucleolar size is decoupled from the nucleolar activity under low nutrient condition. A complete lack of carbon or nitrogen did not cause such decoupling. In conidia, no or faint RFP signals were initially observed, hinting at the absence of functional nucleoli. RFP signals only started to become visible in conidia within 2 hours of germination when the germ tube tip began to differentiate a specialized infection structure, the appressorium. RFP signals diminished thereafter. In contrast, in the appressorium, signals became concentrated after 6 hours as the appressorium matured. We propose that such nucleolar dynamics may reflect the strategy of filamentous fungi under low nutrient availability to forage for food resources as well as the roles of the nucleolus during fungal development. IMPORTANCE The nucleolus is a dynamic subnuclear structure that is involved in many fundamental processes of the nucleus. In higher eukaryotic cells, the size and shape of nucleoli correlate with nucleolar activities. For fungi, knowledge of the nucleolus and its functions is primarily gleaned from budding yeast. Whether such correlation is conserved and how nucleolar functions are regulated in filamentous fungi including important human and crop pathogens are largely unknown. Our observations reveal that the dynamics of nucleolus in a model plant pathogenic fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, is distinct from those of animal and yeast nucleoli under low nutrient availability and during pathogenic development. Our data not only provide new insight into the nucleoli in filamentous fungi but also highlight the need for investigating how nucleolar dynamics is regulated in comparison to other eukaryotes.

It is widely accepted that phosphorus (P) limits microbial metabolic processes and thus soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition in tropical forests. Global change factors like elevated atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition can enhance P limitation, raising concerns about the fate of SOC. However, how elevated N deposition affects the soil priming effect (PE) (i.e., fresh C inputs induced changes in SOC decomposition) in tropical forests remains unclear. We incubated soils exposed to 9 years of experimental N deposition in a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest with two types of 13C‐labeled substrates of contrasting bioavailability (glucose and cellulose) with and without P amendments. We found that N deposition decreased soil total P and microbial biomass P, suggesting enhanced P limitation. In P unamended soils, N deposition significantly inhibited the PE. In contrast, adding P significantly increased the PE under N deposition and by a larger extent for the PE of cellulose (PEcellu) than the PE of glucose (PEglu). Relative to adding glucose or cellulose solely, adding P with glucose alleviated the suppression of soil microbial biomass and C‐acquiring enzymes induced by N deposition, whereas adding P with cellulose attenuated the stimulation of acid phosphatase (AP) induced by N deposition. Across treatments, the PEglu increased as C‐acquiring enzyme activity increased, whereas the PEcellu increased as AP activity decreased. This suggests that P limitation, enhanced by N deposition, inhibits the soil PE through varying mechanisms depending on substrate bioavailability; that is, P limitation regulates the PEglu by affecting soil microbial growth and investment in C acquisition, whereas regulates the PEcellu by affecting microbial investment in P acquisition. These findings provide new insights for tropical forests impacted by N loading, suggesting that expected changes in C quality and P limitation can affect the long‐term regulation of the soil PE. Shrub cover in semiarid rangelands may induce changes in soil resources and ecosystem functioning. However, it is unknown the real influence that shrub vegetation has on soil quality in rangelands used for livestock purposes. We evaluated the shrub cover effect on 12 chemical and biochemical parameters of soil quality. In a semiarid Monte rangeland of Argentina, 6 paddocks were selected and 10 m transects were placed in a patch with (Sh) and without shrubs (WSh). Then, sites with grasses (Sh‐G and WSh‐G), bare ground‐litter (Sh‐BL and WSh‐BL), and under shrub cover (Sh‐S) were selected. In spring 2017 and 2018, a composite soil sample (0–10 cm in depth) was taken at each site (n = 6). Sh‐G and Sh‐S sites presented high values of soil organic matter, soil organic nitrogen, particulate organic matter (POM), and cellulase activity (CA); WSh‐BL and Sh‐BL sites were associated with the lowest contents of these variables. For the rest of the soil quality parameters, the soil sampling sites showed similar values. These results show that woody presence should not be directly linked to soil quality loss. Although we did not detect a shrub effect in all parameters studied, in the context of appropriate grazing management, the presence of plant species of different functional groups has a positive effect on organic matter and N content of soil close to them. Moreover, in these sites, high POM values represent an important reservoir of potentially available nutrients, and promote CA necessary for fresh litter decomposition improving the soil quality of semiarid rangelands. Livestock grazing is among the most intensive land‐use activities in grasslands, and can affect plant communities directly or indirectly via grazing‐induced soil legacies. Under climate change, grasslands are threatened globally by recurrent drought. However, the extent to which drought influences grazing‐induced soil legacy effects on plant biomass production and community composition remains largely unexplored.We grew five naturally co‐occurring plant species (three dominants and two subordinates) in mixed communities in a glasshouse experiment in live and sterilized soil that had or had not been subjected to 19 years of grazing; these plant communities were then exposed to a subsequent drought. We tested the treatment effects on plant community biomass, proportional above‐ground biomass of individual species, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal root colonization, and soil nutrient availability.Under drought‐free conditions, soils from grazed plots produced significantly higher plant above‐ground and total community biomass compared to soils from ungrazed plots. In contrast, plant above‐ground and total community biomass were similar between grazed and ungrazed soils under drought conditions. Similarly, soils from grazed plots increased the proportional biomass of dominant species but decreased the proportion of subordinate species; however, the proportional biomass of dominant and subordinate species was similar between grazed and ungrazed soils under drought conditions. Soil NO3−‐N in grazed soil was significantly higher compared to ungrazed soil. Drought dramatically increased soil NO3−‐N in sterilized soil and had a more pronounced increase in grazed soil than in ungrazed soil. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal root colonization from grazed soil was lower compared to ungrazed soil. Drought significantly increased the soil available phosphorus concentration, as well as plant community AM fungal root colonization.Synthesis. Our study suggests that drought can neutralize positive grazing effects on plant community biomass production via altered plant–soil interactions. Cover crops (CC) have great potential to enhance the sustainability of agroecosystems. However, the wide range of possible rotations of CC and cash crops (CaC) means that important knowledge gaps persist on how CC affects CaC. We investigated the legacy effects of five common CC (three monocultures: vetch, melilotus, and barley, and two mixtures: barley-vetch and barley-melilotus) on two of the most important CaC, maize and wheat. A microcosm, semi-controlled experiment was established simulating warm, low-income Mediterranean conditions. After two cycles, soil physicochemical and microbial properties, as well as plant growth and nutrition variables, were measured at the CC early growth CaC stage. In maize, barley CC had the best soil microbial and nutritional legacy effects, which resulted in the highest biomass and nutrient status. In contrast, barley produced the worst results on wheat, showing the disadvantages of growing two crops from the same tribe consecutively. CC mixtures also did not offer a productive advantage over pure CC. Additionally, our findings suggest that archaea seem to play a role in increasing N and Zn content in maize shoots. Fragmentation caused by disturbance is frequent in wetlands and usually co‐occurs with increases in cadmium and nutrient availability. However, whether fragmentation can interact with nutrients and heavy metals to affect wetland invasive plants has been little studied. We conducted a greenhouse experiment to test the effects of fragmentation (initial fragment was non‐severed, was severed into two fragments, and three fragments), cadmium (low, medium, and high), and nutrient availability level (high and low) on the growth of a widespread, invasive clonal plant Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. Clonal fragmentation reduced the total mass, stolon mass, root mass, and total stolon length of A. philoxeroides and altered the biomass allocation. Increases in cadmium adversely affected the growth of A. philoxeroides. The high level of cadmium increased leaf mass ratio but decreased stolon mass ratio. Response of leaf mass ratio to fragmentation varied at different cadmium or nutrient availability levels. Fragmentation, cadmium, and nutrients had a significant interaction on leaf mass ratio. Our results suggest that fragmentation can adversely affect the growth of A. philoxeroides. Maize yields in many regions of the world have increased significantly since the 1960s. The increase is mainly attributed to technological improvements and climate change. On a regional scale and in recent decades, climate change has altered growth conditions of maize and this, in turn, has influenced changes in yield. In order to analyze the contribution of different factors to yield changes, and to obtain a model setup that could be used for further analyses of yield development, this study systematically investigated the effects of recent climate change, irrigation, cultivar selection and nutrient availability on historical yields in Northern Bavaria. Four sets of simulations were conducted with the mechanistic plant growth model PROMET, during the time period between 1997 and 2020, and the resulting yields were compared to county statistics. In addition, three scenarios were simulated in order to determine yield increase potentials for the highly mechanized agricultural region of Northern Bavaria. The results showed a good agreement with the observed yields (R2 = 0.76), when considering altered nutrient availability, suggesting that an increase in nutrient uptake by plants plays a key role in reproducing yield statistics and has a main contribution to the observed increasing yield trends. Moreover, other factors considered individually, such as recent climate change, irrigation and cultivar selection, could not explain the yield levels and trends shown by the statistics. The scenario simulations demonstrated potential increases in yield due to irrigation and cultivar adaptation. The yield response to irrigation shows a trend, with recent climate change progressing, of 0–25% when irrigating currently grown cultivars and 10–50% when irrigating an adapted cultivar; rainfed cultivar adaptation consistently increased the level of yields by approximately 10%. This study highlights the importance of a dynamic consideration of growth conditions in the course of climate change, rather than static assumptions of model parameters, and emphasizes the importance of the second-order effects of climate change. This study investigated the effects of inorganic trace elements (IEs) and sucrose chelated trace elements (SEs) on the growth performance, nutrients and energy utilization, antioxidant capacity, and mineral deposition in broiler chickens, and the efficiency of IEs replaced by SEs at different levels was also evaluated. A total of 448,21-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chickens with similar body weights were randomly assigned into 6 dietary treatments (8 cages/treatments) in a complete randomized design. Treatments were a basal diet including 2.0 g/kg of IE (IE-2.0) premix, and SE-2.0, SE-1.5, SE-1.0, SE-0.5, and SE-0 were basal diets in which IEs were replaced by SE premix at 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5, and 0 g/kg, respectively. In general, there was a linear and quadratic decrease in growth performance including average daily feed intake (ADFI) and average daily gain (ADG), apparent and true availability of nutrients (DM, OM, and CP), GE, trace elements (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, I, and Se), essential AA (Lys, Met, Arg, His, Phe, Thr, and Val), non-essential AA (Asp, Ser, Glu, Gly, and Cys), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and trace elements (Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn) in the liver, and an increase in feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) and liver malondialdehyde (MDA), with decreasing SE levels (p < 0.05). In conclusion, under the conditions of this experiment, using half of the sucrose chelated trace elements (Cu, Fe, Zn, and Mn) instead of inorganic trace elements did not affect the growth performance, nutrients and energy utilization, antioxidant capacity, and liver trace element deposition in broiler chickens. Purpose: Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) amendments considerably influence fungal diversity and community composition in various ecosystems. Nevertheless, how N and P additions would change arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal community and functional guilds in forest soil remains largely unclear. Materials and methods: A 5-year N and P addition experiment was conducted in a subtropical forest of southeastern China. Soil AM fungal communities were detected by the high throughput sequencing of 18S rRNA gene-fragments. We investigated the six-seasonal responses of AM fungal diversity, community assembly pattern and functional guild composition to N and/or P amendments. Results and discussion: The AM fungal Shannon index changed from a positive (3–4 years) to a nonsignificant (4–5 years) effect under P and NP additions as the duration of fertilization increased. P addition, but not N addition, changed the AM fungal community assembly pattern from stochastic- to deterministic-dominant processes. In contrast, P and NP additions significantly influenced AM fungal functional guild components, and the relative abundances of ancestral and edaphophilic guilds increased with increasing years of fertilization. Additionally, the AM fungal guild structure was significantly affected by soil P-related parameters. Conclusions: Our results emphasize the substantial impacts of P amendment on soil AM community assembly pattern and functional guild composition. Soil microbial communities are important drivers of biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, organic matter decomposition, soil organic carbon, and Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs: CO2, N2O, and CH4) and are influenced by crop and soil management practices. The knowledge on the impact of conservation agriculture (CA) on soil bacterial diversity, nutrient availability, and GHG emissions in semiarid regions under rainfed conditions is vital to develop sustainable agricultural practices, but such information has not been systemically documented. Hence, studies were conducted for 10 years in rainfed pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.)-- castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cropping system under semi-arid conditions to assess the effects of tillage and crop residue levels on the soil bacterial diversity, enzyme activity (Dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase), GHG emissions, and soil available nutrients (Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Sequencing of soil DNA through Illumina HiSeqbased 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing technology has revealed that bacterial community responded to both tillage and residue levels. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria in terms of Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTUs) at phyla, class as well as genera level was higher in CA (NTR1: No Tillage + 10 cm anchored residue and NTR2 NT + 30 cm anchored residue) over CT (conventional tillage without crop residues). CA resulted in higher enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase) and reduction in GHG emissions over CT. CA recorded 34% higher and 3% lower OC, as compared to CT, and CTR1, respectively. CA recorded 10, 34, and 26% higher available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium over CT and CTR1, respectively. NTR1 recorded 25 and 38% lower N2O emissions as compared to CTR1 and CTR2, respectively. Whereas only NT recorded 12% higher N2O emissions as compared to CT. Overall, the results of the study indicate that CA improves the relative abundance of soil bacterial communities, nutrient availability, and enzyme activities, and may help to contribute to the mitigation of climate change, and sustainability in rainfed areas. Phosphorus (P) is a fundamental mineral nutrient for crop development and essential in vital physiological processes in pulses. However P availability is restricted to crops because of various reasons. Hence developing solutions for enhancing the bioavailability of P will helps to improve the production of pulses. With this rationale, field experiments were conducted at National Pulses Research Center (NPRC), Vamban during kharif and rabi (2016 to 2018) to study the effect of phosphorus and bioresources viz, phosphobacteria and Arbuscular Mycorrhiza along with Rhizobium on growth, yield and soil nutrient status and economics of blackgram under acid soil condition. The results revealed that, soil based application of inorganic phosphorus @ 50 kg ha−1 + Rhizobium and phosphobacteria each @ 2 kg ha−1 + Arbuscular Mycorrhiza @ 50 kg ha−1 increased yield (941 kg ha−1) which is 20.29% higher than application of P2O5 @ 50 kg ha−1 + Rhizobium and phosphobacteria each @ 2 kg ha−1 (750 kg ha−1). Hence, application of both organic (Rhizobium, phosphobacteria and Arbuscular Mycorrhiza) and inorganic phosphorus resources is better for effective utilization of applied phosphorus for good pod development and yield in a sustainable way for acid soils under alfisol condition. Microbial spoilage is a major cause of food waste. Microbial spoilage is dependent on the contamination of food from the raw materials or from microbial communities residing in food processing facilities, often as bacterial biofilms. However, limited research has been conducted on the persistence of non-pathogenic spoilage communities in food processing facilities, or whether the bacterial communities differ among food commodities and vary with nutrient availability. To address these gaps, this review re-analyzed data from 39 studies from various food facilities processing cheese (n = 8), fresh meat (n = 16), seafood (n = 7), fresh produce (n = 5) and ready-to-eat products (RTE; n = 3). A core surface-associated microbiome was identified across all food commodities, including Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus, Psychrobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Serratia and Microbacterium. Commodity-specific communities were additionally present in all food commodities except RTE foods. The nutrient level on food environment surfaces overall tended to impact the composition of the bacterial community, especially when comparing high-nutrient food contact surfaces to floors with an unknown nutrient level. In addition, the compositions of bacterial communities in biofilms residing in high-nutrient surfaces were significantly different from those of low-nutrient surfaces. Collectively, these findings contribute to a better understanding of the microbial ecology of food processing environments, the development of targeted antimicrobial interventions and ultimately the reduction of food waste and food insecurity and the promotion of food sustainability. A high pH, low solubility of bound plant nutrients, and negative impacts on microbial communities are common drawbacks of biomass ash (BA) vermicomposting. In this study, nutrient-rich BA mixed with cow manure was tested at three different application rates to obtain final nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) contents of 3.5%, 7.0%, and 10.0% for bio-based fertilizers via vermicomposting. The results showed that all BA blends made with cow manure increased fermentation temperatures and allowed successful worm activity during the subsequent vermicomposting phase. The order of indicator enzyme activities in all vermicomposting samples was urease (220 μg NH4 g−1 h−1) > β-glucosidase (95 μg PNP g−1 h−1) > alkaline phosphatase (91 μg PNP g−1 h−1) > arylsulfatase (83 μg PNP g−1 h−1) > acid phosphatase (60 μg PNP g−1 h−1). As an indicator of nutrient bioavailability, high correlations were observed between enzyme activities and microbial diversity in vermicompost samples. Determination coefficients (R2) obtained from multiple linear regressions between enzyme activities and bacterial population for T0, T1, T2, and T3 were determined as 0.90, 0.65, 0.73, and 0.90, respectively. According to a novel metagenome-based approach proposed within the scope of the present study, the stimulatory effects of Flavobacteriales, Burkholderiales, Saccharimonadales, and Pseudomonadales on enzyme activities for the nutrient solubility were found to be significant and positive. The findings of this study demonstrated that worm composting could be a sustainable bio-based technology for the production of slow-release fertilizer from nutrient-rich waste material. Mars exploration will foresee the design of bioregenerative life support systems (BLSSs), in which the use/recycle of in situ resources might allow the production of food crops. However, cultivation on the poorly-fertile Mars regolith will be very challenging. To pursue this goal, we grew potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants on the MMS-1 Mojave Mars regolith simulant, pure (R100) and mixed with green compost at 30% (R70C30), in a pot in a cold glasshouse with fertigation. For comparison purposes, we also grew plants on a fluvial sand, pure (S100) and amended with 30% of compost (S70C30), a volcanic soil (VS) and a red soil (RS). We studied the fertility dynamics in the substrates over time and the tuber nutritional quality. We investigated nutrient bioavailability and fertility indicators in the substrates and the quality of potato tubers. Plants completed the life cycle on R100 and produced scarce but nutritious tubers, despite many critical simulant properties. The compost supply enhanced the MMS-1 chemical/physical fertility and determined a higher tuber yield of better nutritional quality. This study demonstrated that a compost-amended Mars simulant could be a proper substrate to produce food crops in BLSSs, enabling it to provide similar ecosystem services of the studied terrestrial soils.

This study aims to examine the relationship between nutrient availability and the selfreported health of individuals in Nepal using the data from the Nepal Living Standards Survey (NLSS) and employing an ordered logit estimation. We find that an increase in the availability of proteins and fats increases the level of self-reported health of individuals in Nepal. However, micronutrient availability’s relationship with self-reported health is either mixed or insignificant. We also find that access to a greater variety of food increases self-reported health until individuals meet their basic caloric requirements. Moreover, there are perceptional differences related to the effect of proteins consumed from different food groups (meats, dairy, and lentils) on self-reported health. Finally, macronutrient availability from expensive nutrient-dense foods seems to be the main driver of improvements in self-reported health.

To achieve higher crop production in a soybean-wheat cropping system, comprehensive knowledge of soil fertility status and its variability is crucial. However, a significant gap exists between the potential and actual productivity of this system in the Vertisols of Indian semi-arid tropics. Therefore, 2 years of field research were conducted to investigate how different crop management practices affect soil fertility in this cropping system. Sandy clay loam soil in Bangkalan is a soil with a low content of nutrients, organic matter, bases, and cation exchange capacity (CEC), which inhibits the growth of maize plants. In addition, the nature of the soil causes the fertilizer to become more soluble, and the absorption of nutrients, especially potassium, is low. One of the efforts to increase potassium uptake in sandy loam soils is applying biochar and acid-activated bentonite. This study aimed to examine the effect of adding biochar and acid-activated bentonite to the nutrient uptake of maize plants in the sandy soil of Bangkalan. Biochar was prepared from maize cobs by the Kon-Tiki method; bentonite was activated by physical (200 oC) and chemical (1N H2SO4) methods. The greenhouse experiment was carried out using a completely randomized design with biochar (B) and acid-activated bentonite (T) as treatments, each with three levels, namely 0, 5, 10 t ha-1 and three replications. Soil analysis performed included pH, organic carbon, CEC and exchangeable bases, while plant tissue analysis included leaf height and area. The results showed that the combination of biochar and acid-activated bentonite significantly increased soil pH, soil exchangeable K, soil exchangeable Na, and leaf area of maize plants. A single application of biochar significantly increased soil organic C and maize plant height. The application of acid-activated bentonite significantly increased the CEC of sandy loam soils.

Soil microbial communities are important drivers of biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, organic matter decomposition, soil organic carbon, and Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs: CO2, N2O, and CH4) and are influenced by crop and soil management practices. The knowledge on the impact of conservation agriculture (CA) on soil bacterial diversity, nutrient availability, and GHG emissions in semi-arid regions under rainfed conditions is vital to develop sustainable agricultural practices, but such information has not been systemically documented. Hence, studies were conducted for 10 years in rainfed pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.)—castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cropping system under semi-arid conditions to assess the effects of tillage and crop residue levels on the soil bacterial diversity, enzyme activity (Dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase), GHG emissions, and soil available nutrients (Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Sequencing of soil DNA through Illumina HiSeq-based 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing technology has revealed that bacterial community responded to both tillage and residue levels. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria in terms of Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTUs) at phyla, class as well as genera level was higher in CA (NTR1: No Tillage + 10 cm anchored residue and NTR2 NT + 30 cm anchored residue) over CT (conventional tillage without crop residues). CA resulted in higher enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase) and reduction in GHG emissions over CT. CA recorded 34% higher and 3% lower OC, as compared to CT, and CTR1, respectively. CA recorded 10, 34, and 26% higher available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium over CT and CTR1, respectively. NTR1 recorded 25 and 38% lower N2O emissions as compared to CTR1 and CTR2, respectively. Whereas only NT recorded 12% higher N2O emissions as compared to CT. Overall, the results of the study indicate that CA improves the relative abundance of soil bacterial communities, nutrient availability, and enzyme activities, and may help to contribute to the mitigation of climate change, and sustainability in rainfed areas.

This study evaluates the use of fermentation to increase nutrient availability in pulp and paper bio-sludge (PPBS) as feed for black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). Rearing of BSFL on fermented PPBS was carried out in a climate chamber in order to assess nutrient availability and larvae survival and growth. The PPBS used came from a chemo-thermomechanical pulp/groundwood pulp mill. The PPBS was fermented at 35 °C and 55 °C, respectively, at initial pH of 10. The effects of sediment and liquid from fermented PPBS on larvae dry weight, survival rate until the prepupae stage, bioconversion, and reduction rate of PPBS were measured. The bioconversion of the liquids (4.1–6.6%) was substantially higher than for both the sediments and untreated PPBS (≤ 0.4%). The survival rate, on the other hand, was substantially lower (26.3–30.9 %) than for the sediments and untreated PPBS (49.5–52.6%). Neither the sediments nor the liquids had significant effects on the larvae weight or on the PPBS reduction rate. The sediments had no significant effect on the survival rate or the bioconversion. This study demonstrates that fermentation dissolves a part of the PPBS and that dissolved substances in the fermentation liquid readily convert to larvae biomass. However, the bulk of the lignocellulose is not dissolved, and most of PPBS nutrients remain unavailable for growth of the larvae. Further research should focus on improved pretreatment of PPBS to increase availability of nutrients and thereby improve the feasibility of BSFL as a recycling method for PPBS. Soil aggregates are the basic units of soil, which regulate soil carbon cycling and nutrient availability through the protective effect of soil aggregates on soil organic matter. It is still uncertain whether larger aggregates are more conducive to soil nutrient availability in red soil. This study explored the regulation of soil aggregates on soil nutrient availability by studying the distribution of soil aggregates, nutrient concentrations, nutrient availability and organo-mineral bonds in soil aggregates in a low-productivity Chinese fir forest, in south China. We sampled the 0–10 cm soil with nine repeated plots and analyzed the soil aggregate structure, total nutrients, available nutrients and organo-mineral bonds of soil aggregates. The results showed that the contribution of >2 mm soil aggregates to soil nutrients was highest, because the mass of >2 mm soil aggregates accounted for about 50% of the total mass of aggregates and was much higher than that of other aggregates. The availability (available nutrient/total nutrient) of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium increased with decreases in soil aggregate size, indicating that soil aggregates with a larger particle size were more averse to nutrient availability. Strong organo-mineral bonds accounted for more than 80% of the total organo-mineral bonds in the soil aggregates of each size, and the proportion of weak organo-mineral bonds in the soil aggregate increased with decreases in the soil aggregate size. There was a significant negative correlation between the size of soil aggregates and the proportion of weak organo-mineral bonds in soil aggregates. The availability of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in soil aggregates was positively correlated with the proportion of weak organo-mineral bonds. These results suggest that Fe/Al oxides may play an important role in regulating nutrient availability, especially in red soil. A higher proportion of strong organo-mineral bonds in larger soil aggregates may exert a stronger negative effect on the accessibility of microorganisms to organic matter and result in a lower nutrient availability. In conclusion, this study shows that larger-sized soil macroaggregates may exert a negative effect on nutrient availability, owing to a higher proportion of strong binding bonds, which can better prevent microorganisms from mineralizing organic matter into effective nutrients in red soil. Microalgal cell attaching and biofilm formation are critical in the application of microalgal biocathode, which severs as one of the hopeful candidates to an original cathode in bioelectrochemical systems. Many efforts have been put in biofilm formation and bioelectrochemical systems for years, but the predominant factors shaping microalgal biocathode formation are sketchy. We launched a pair of researches to investigate microalgal attachment and biofilm formation in the presence/absence of applied voltages using Chlamydomonas microsphaera as a model unicellular motile microalga. In this study, we presented how microalga attached and biofilm formed on a carbon felt surface without applied voltages and try to manifest the most important aspects in this process. Results showed that while nutrient sources did not directly regulate cell attachment onto the carbon felt, limited initial nutrient concentration nevertheless promoted cell attachment. Specifically, nutrient availability did not influence the early stage (20–60 min) of microalgal cell attachment but did significantly impact cell attachment during later stages (240–720 min). Further analysis revealed that nutrient availability-mediated chemotactic movements and zeta potential are crucial to facilitate the initial attachment and subsequent biofilm formation of C. microsphaera onto the surfaces, serving as an important factor controlling microalgal surface attachment. Our results demonstrate that nutrient availability is a dominant factor controlling microalgal surface attachment and subsequent biofilm formation processes. To understand species' responses to climate change, we must better comprehend the factors shaping physiological critical thermal limits. One factor of potential importance is nutrient availability. Carbohydrates are an energy source that can directly affect an organism's physiological state. Ants are among the most omnipresent and ecologically relevant animal groups on Earth, and many ant species consume carbohydrate‐based diets. Additionally, as ectotherms, ants are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Here, we examined the relationship between foraging temperature, carbohydrate availability, and critical thermal maximum (CTmax) in ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). First, we conducted a laboratory experiment using 3–4 colonies of two species that forage at high temperatures (Camponotus blandus Smith and Dorymyrmex thoracicus Gallardo) and two species that forage at lower temperatures (Nylanderia fulva Mayr and Dolichoderus quadridenticulatus Roger). Each colony was divided into two experimental subcolonies, which were given diets containing different carbohydrate concentrations (5 vs. 20% sucrose solutions). We then measured CTmax. We also collected ants belonging to these species in the field and measured their CTmax. We found that CTmax was highest for the two species that forage at higher temperatures. For C. blandus and D. thoracicus, workers given 20% sucrose had higher CTmax than workers given 5% sucrose. No diet‐mediated differences in CTmax were seen for N. fulva and D. quadridenticulatus workers. Additionally, the experimental ants in both treatment groups had higher CTmax than their field‐collected conspecifics, except in the case of C. blandus. If carbohydrate‐rich diets can boost heat tolerance in some species, it is possible that changes in resource availability could determine how climate change affects ants, especially species with carbohydrate‐based diets. Purpose: Improving crop yields by increasing fertilizer-use-efficiency is essential to minimizing agriculture's environmental impact. Water-dispersible carbon nanomaterials (CNM) have emerged as an innovative material to improve crop yields by increasing nutrient utilization and enhancing crop physiological processes. However, the optimum dose of CNM, performance on crop growth, and impact on soil biochemical properties remain poorly understood. Methods: A greenhouse pot experiment (55 days) was conducted to evaluate the effect of three CNM rates, applied basally as a soil drench amendment, on the growth of two lettuce varieties and soil biochemical properties. We compared three CNM rates (200, 400 & 800 mg kg−1; C200F, C400F & C800F) along with a negative control (C0F0; no fertilizer or CNM) and a positive control (C0F; fertilizer at recommended doses like CNM treatments, no CNM applied). Results: We found that nitrogen (N), phosphorus and potassium (K) accumulation by lettuce and availability in soil were enhanced with CNM application, with 31% (C200F) and 34% (C400F) increases in shoot N accumulation compared to C0F, and K accumulation peaking at C800F (230% increase over C0F). Compared to C0F, soil microbial biomass carbon was 67–180% (C200F) or 42–150% (CF400) higher, phosphatase enzyme activity was 29–32% higher with C200F, and urease enzyme activity was 37–38% higher at C400F, indicating greater soil biological activity at lower application rates. Conclusion: Overall, CNM (200–400 mgkg−1 soil) promoted lettuce growth, enhanced soil fertility and soil biological activity, elucidating that water-dispersible CNM can be an alternative soil amendment to improve crop growth and soil biochemical quality.
