102. Asymmetric Reinforcements of a Quasi-Isotropic Graphite Epoxy Plate Containing a Circular Hole.

Abstract

The response to uniaxial loading of a graphite epoxy panel containing a one-inch diameter hole was analyzed by finite element analysis and tested experimentally. The analysis modeled the basic unreinforced panel and six different asymmetric reinforcements consisting of additional layers of the same material of circular shape on one side of the panel laminate. The reinforcement configurations varied the volume of the reinforcement from 94% to 162% of the volume of the material removed by the hole, the number of reinforcing layers (1 to 4) and the outer radius of the reinforcement layers from 0.75 inches to 1.5 inches. The orientation of the reinforcing layers was either 45 deg or 0 deg to the load direction. Results of the computational analysis indicated that the reduction of maximum strain (in the direction of the load at a point at the edge of the hole 90 deg from the load direction) by the reinforcements was at most 12%, with apparent dependence on the number of layers used and the volume of the reinforcement.

109. {delta}-Aminolevulinic acid biosynthesis in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis involves formation of glutamyl-tRNA

Abstract

Cell-free extracts of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis catalyzed the tRNA-dependent, RNase A-sensitive formation of δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) from glutamate. Cell extracts prepared from cultures of E. coli grown under aerobic or anaerobic conditions had similar levels of ALA biosynthetic activity. Both the tRNA-stimulated conversion of glutamate to ALA and the conversion of glutamate-1-semialdehyde to ALA were inhibited by gabaculin. However, gabaculin had no effect on the growth of either E. coli or B. subtilis. The tRNA-dependent transformation of glutamate to ALA in E. coli and B. subtilis thus appears to be very similar to the pathway found in cyanobacteria, certain obligate anaerobic eubacteria, archaebacteria and in the chloroplasts of algae and higher plant species.

Abstract

The intent of the study was to investigate the motivational effects on English learning for English as a foreign language (EFL) grade 12 students in public schools in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). To achieve this intent, 363 students' scores on the Common English Proficiency Assessment (CEPA) were related to the students' state of satisfaction, willingness to communicate with people from other cultures, integrative orientation, instrumental orientation, extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, and willingness to spend time learning English as measured by a selfreport questionnaire. The study showed that there were significant positive correlations (p<.05) between English language achievement and willingness to communicate with people from other cultures, integrative orientation, intrinsic motivation, and willingness to spend time on learning English. However, there was a significant negative correlation (p<.05) between language attainment and extrinsic motivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
