This is the very first technical guideline on the European level for the fire safe use of timber structures and wood products in buildings. It aims at providing the highest scientific knowledge and covers the extended use of European design codes and standards, practical guidance, examples for fire safe design and principles of performance based design. The guideline presents information for architects, engineers, educators, regulatory authorities and building industry. The guideline is focusing on structural fire design by providing the latest detailed guidance on separating and load-bearing functions of timber structures under standard fire exposure. Reference is made to the Fire Part of Eurocode 5 and, where new knowledge is available, to other references. Depending on national regulations, some of the new design methods may need agreement by the competent authority. This new information will be potential input to the next revision of the Fire Part of Eurocode 5. The guideline also includes information on reaction to the fire performance of wood products according to the European classification system. The importance of proper detailing in building design is stressed by practical examples. Active measures of fire protection and quality of construction workmanship and inspection at building sites are presented as important means for fulfilling the fire safety objectives. The guideline has been developed within the European research project FireInTimber (Fire Resistance of Innovative Timber structures). Leading experts and researchers from nine European countries have been participating and guarantee its quality and relevance. The project has been initiated by the European initiative BWW Building With Wood under the umbrella of the European Wood Industries CEI Bois. It is sponsored by the European wood industry in cooperation with national funding organisations within the WoodWisdom-Net Research Programme.

Några stora träbyggnadsobjekt som byggts inom ramen för den Nationella träbyggnadsstrategin har studerats i detalj vad gäller både byggteknik, planering och genomförande. Arbetet har bedrivits under namnet Fortbildningsprogrammet. Tekniska aspekter sammanfattas i denna Kontenta.

This report is a summary and analysis of the knowledge gained from the activities carried out 2006 - 2008 within "Nationella träbyggnadsstrategins fortbildningsprogram". Expert knowledge and results are also included from the many corresponding R&D programs, aimed to support and develop timber housing construction, which was run parallel to "Nationella träbyggnadsstrategin"."Fortbildningsprogrammet" - the program for further education of actors in the housing industry was a cooperative effort between: Luleå university of technology, Vaxjö university, Dalarna university and the institute SP Trätek.The chapters of the report are written by different authors from the universities and institute.The report describes: The building technique and competence development that have taken place within the Swedish timber housing industry (viewed in a wide context). - Three types of structural systems exist on the market today (column-beam systems, massive wood elements and timber frame systems). These are combined and erected using three different types of construction methods (on-site construction, prefabricated elements and prefabricated volume elements).- During the program, seminars, workshops and study tours were attended by approximately 750 people representing construction clients, architects, designers and construction companies. In depth case results are presented and analysed from 15 different building projects that give valuable information for other projects and it is also estimated that more than 10 other projects was initiated as an effect of the program.As an important by-effect, it is noted that the undertaking and existence of the program gave additional support to the development of research groups with focus on timber housing construction.In-depth case descriptions of timber house projects with a focus on those in Växjö, Falun och Skellefteå. - Detailed descriptions and analyses regarding: Design aspects, architectural limitations, descriptions of technical solutions for adequate fire, acoustics and horizontal stabilising. The basis for a new generation of innovative wood products has been developed in the InnoFireWood project. The main characteristics of such products are substantial improvements in fire performance with maintained eco-efficiency, durability, and other properties of the original wood product. Industrial relevance, sustainable production, and end-use applications were in main focus. This type of products will increase the competitiveness of wood products in relation to other building products. A new Nordic system with classes for the Durability of the Reaction to Fire performance (DRF classes) at interior and exterior building applications has been implemented in order to assess the overall sustainable performance of the new products. The project was conducted in close co-operation between Sweden and Finland. In addition to research institutes, industry was represented by several companies producing wood products or fire retardants.

Träteks kartläggning av brandbestämmelser i 23 länder i Europa samt Australien, Nya Zeeland, Kanada, USA och Japan har uppmärksammats bl a i Dagens Industri. Skillnaderna mellan länderna är stora, t ex vad gäller tillåtet antal våningar med bärande trästomme och möjligheterna att använda synligt trä i väggar, tak och fasader. Norge, Sverige, Storbritannien, Irland, Nederländerna, Spanien, Slovenien och Grekland tillåter femvåningshus eller högre med träfasad förutsatt att sprinklersystem för brandskydd finns.

Brandmotstånd hos träkonstruktioner efterfrågas alltmer, särskilt för större och högre hus, som nu får byggas med trästomme i större utsträckning till följd av att mer funktionsbaserade byggregler införs i allt fler länder.Tillgängliga data över brandmotstånd hos träkonstruktioner (väggar och bjälklag) har därför sammanställts och baseras på befintlig dokumentation i fjorton europeiska och fyra utomeuropeiska länder (Australien, Kanada, Nya Zeeland och USA). Både lätta sammansatta och massiva träkonstruktioner för bärande och/eller avskiljande väggar och för bjälklag ingår i översikten.

The Single Burning Item, SBI, has recently been developed and adopted by the European Communities as the main test method for the identification of the so called Euroclasses which will be used for the reaction to fire performance of all building products excluding floorings. A major research programme, including SBI and the Room/Corner test, ISO 9705, was performed during 1997-98 in order to evaluate the SBI test for 30 building products. These products have now been tested in the Cone Calorimeter, which is a well-known international standard, ISO 5660, for fire testing giving basic scientific data. The test results are presented in this study. The Cone Calorimeter results show good repeatability for all products.The FIGRA and SMOGRA indices are defined and presented for the Cone Calorimeter and compared with similar indices from the Room/Corner test and from SBI test. Good agreement was found for the FIGRA index with both Room/Corner and SBI. No agreement was found for SMOGRA.The results are also compared with other results from the Room/Corner test, time to flashover, and from the SBI test, peak rate of heat release, time to ignition and smoke production.

Rapporten redogör översiktligt för resultaten av första fasen av Nordic Wood-projektet "Brandsäkra trähus". Projektets mål är att stärka träets ställning som ett ur brandsynpunkt beräkningsbart och ingenjörsmässigt byggnadsmaterial i nordiska och europeiska byggnormer med särskild inriktning på flervånings trähus. Projektet har bedrivits i fyra delprojekt; "Brandteknisk utformning av flervåningshus med trästomme", "Beräkningsmetoder för bärande konstruktionselement", "Träfasader i flervåningshus" samt "Euroklassificering av trä som ytmaterial".

The fire behaviour of different wooden floors has been evaluated according to the proposed CEN test method and compared to the Nordic requirements and to data from the Cone Calorimeter. A high local heat flux at the CEN pilot burner explains why wooden floors ignite in spite of the low maximum heat flux of 11 kW/m2 which is below the critical heat flux for ignition of wood. There is no significant difference in the fire behaviour between hardwoods and softwoods.

Ett enkelt empiriskt samband har utvecklats för att beräkna tiden till övertändning i ett rum klätt med olika vägg- och takmaterial vid fullskalig rumsbrandprovning. Det baseras på provning av 28 olika ytmaterial. Bland dessa fanns både träbaserade och oorganiska material med och utan ytskikt samt syntetiska material. The correlations are based on linear regressions between data as time to ignition and total heat release in the cone calorimeter and time to flashover in the room fire test. They are further development of an earlier approach which has been modified and extended to a wider range of surface linings. The correlations apply so far only to surface linings on both walls and ceilings. When the density of the linings is included, the correlations are improved significally.

Brandens tidiga skede är avgörande för personsäkerheten vid utrymning av ett rum, en lägenhet eller en byggnad. Kunskapen har länge varit bristfällig inom området. Därför har det varit angeläget att ta fram ny kunskap och att utveckla experimentella och teoretiska metoder som förbättrar möjligheterna att förutsäga det tidiga brandförloppet och bedöma risker i olika brandmiljöer. Sverige och Norden i övrigt bedriver internationellt uppmärksammad forskning inom området. De omfattande projekten "Brandrisker i det tidiga brandförloppet" och "Eurefic" har lett till standardiserade provningsmetoder och ytterligare standardiseringar diskuteras. New techniques based on oxygen consumption as the cone calorimerer and the room fire test have been studied and utilized. Different models which predict the full-scale behaviour from small-scale data have been developed. These models clearly show that the new technique is superior to the present national standards and thus supplies new possibilities.

Rökutvecklingen från ytmaterial på väggar och tak vid rumsbrandprovning och vid småskalig brandprovning i den s k konkalorimetern har jämförts. Totalt har 28 olika ytmaterial studerats. Om alla ytmaterialen inkluderas i analysen blir korrelationen relativt låg, men regressionslinjerna är ungefär desamma som för ytmaterial som övertänder efter 10 minuter. Dessa regressionslinjer bör därför kunna användas för samtliga ytmaterial som en första uppskattning. Den rökparameter som då bör väljas är totala rökproduktionen. Ett enkelt samband ges, som kan användas för alla ytmaterial. För ytmaterial som övertänder efter 10 minuter kan sambandet användas med större säkerhet.

Det finns flera standardiserade sätt att mäta antändligheten hos byggnadsmaterial. Här har data för samma byggnadsmaterial jämförts för de 2 vanligaste metoderna, konkalorimetern och ISOs antändlighetstest, den senare svensk standard. Analysen visar att ungefär samma värden erhålls för tid till antändning med de 2 metoderna. Konkalorimetern är att föredra som småskalig brandprovningsmetod även för bestämning av tid till antändning eftersom den också mäter flera andra parametrar samtidigt. Den bör således kunna ersätta ISOs antändlighetstest. Rapport på engelska med utförlig svensk sammanfattning.
