The recurrent collaterals' synaptic efficacies in the CA3 area of the hippocampus generate a cognitive graph which is formed using long-term potentiation and is stored in the synaptic efficacies. The graph is used for spatial tasks and its connections contain information about the distance between the place fields of the place cells. Rats form the cognitive graph in the absence of motivation and later use it when a goal is provided. The information stored in the graph is probably read out by destination cells which are not present in the hippocampus.

A model for the geometric determinants of the place fields of hippocampal place cells (complex spike cells) is used to identify the environmental features affecting the location and shape of the receptive fields of the place cells. The model uses the sum of gaussian tuning curves that are perpendicular to a box wall and are at a fixed distance from it. The place cells play a role in spatial memory, which is seen from their spatially localized firing in rats.

The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method uses three-dimensional simulations to analyze the impact of fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter and the resultant plume evolution. The atmosphere received most of the initial kinetic energy of the fragment and the atmospheric gas exhibited dissociation and partial ionization. Upward expansion of resulting plume led to an explosive release of energy and density gradient of the ambient atmosphere forced upward expansion of plume.

The rich body of data provided by Keeling will be of interest to immigration historians, and perhaps they can look at this from the migrant perspective once again: faced with an engagement with shipping companies, how did migrant demand and choices affect the shape of steamship companies' lines, timetables, and practices?.
