Natural gas extraction (NGE) has expanded rapidly in the United States in recent years. Despite concerns, there is little information about the effects of NGE on air quality or personal exposures of people living or working nearby. Recent research suggests NGE emits polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into air. This study used low-density polyethylene passive samplers to measure concentrations of PAHs in air near active (n = 3) and proposed (n = 2) NGE sites. At each site, two concentric rings of air samplers were placed around the active or proposed well pad location. Silicone wristbands were used to assess personal PAH exposures of participants (n = 19) living or working near the sampling sites. All samples were analyzed for 62 PAHs using GC-MS/MS, and point sources were estimated using the fluoranthene/pyrene isomer ratio. ∑PAH was significantly higher in air at active NGE sites (Wilcoxon rank sum test, p < 0.01). PAHs in air were also more petrogenic (petroleum-derived) at active NGE sites. This suggests that PAH mixtures at active NGE sites may have been affected by direct emissions from petroleum sources at these sites. ∑PAH was also significantly higher in wristbands from participants who had active NGE wells on their properties than from participants who did not (Wilcoxon rank sum test, p < 0.005). There was a significant positive correlation between ∑PAH in participants' wristbands and ∑PAH in air measured closest to participants’ homes or workplaces (simple linear regression, p < 0.0001). These findings suggest that living or working near an active NGE well may increase personal PAH exposure. Hollow porous Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 /graphite carbon (Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 /GC) nanocube heterojunction was designed and constructed as advanced catalytic material by calcining CoSn(OH) 6 precursors followed an immersion carbon coating (using the recyclable napkin as graphite carbon source) and calcinations treatment. The design methods focus on forming intimate interfacial contacts among Co 2 SnO 4 , SnO 2 and GC (in situ hybridization of the composite). The obtained Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 /GC exhibits remarkable dual catalytic behavior including the high catalytic efficiency for photocatalytic (under visible light) degradation of chlorotetracycline (CTC)/tetracycline (TC) and catalytic reduction of p -nitrophenol ( p -NP). Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 /GC could be recycled more than four times, preserving its activity and stability based on graphite carbon protective layer on the surface of catalysts. Owing to multiple heterojunctions structure features and the synergistic effects of different junctions, greatly enhance the charge carrier generation and suppress the charge recombination of electron-hole pairs, which would be beneficial to improve its catalytic activity. The possible mechanisms for the dual-functional catalytic reactions for organic contaminants over Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 /GC were made a thorough inquiry. This study not only shows a possibility for the utilization of low cost the recyclable napkin as a substitute for graphene but also provides a new insight into the design and construction of new heterojunction catalysts for enhancing catalytic activity. Abstract: The effects of changing hydrodynamic conditions and changing temperatures on polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) sampling rates (Rs) were investigated for 12 crop protection chemicals. Exposure concentration was held constant in each laboratory experiment, and flow velocities were calculated from measured mass transfer coefficients of the water boundary layer near the surface of POCIS devices. At a given temperature Rs generally increased by a factor of 2 to 5 between a stagnant condition and higher flow velocities (6–21 cm/s), but Rs for most compounds was essentially constant between the higher flow velocities. When temperature was varied between 8 and 39 °C for a given flow condition, Rs increased linearly. In general, Rs increased by a factor of 2 to 4 and 2 to 8 over this temperature range under flow and stagnant conditions, respectively. An Arrhenius model was used to describe the dependence of POCIS sampling rates on temperature. Adjustments of Rs for temperature did not fully explain observed differences between time‐weighted average concentrations of atrazine determined from POCIS and from composite water sampling in a field setting, suggesting that the effects of other competing factors still need to be evaluated. Abstract: A key success factor for the performance of passive samplers is the proper calibration of sampling rates. Sampling rates for a wide range of polar organic compounds are available for Chemcatchers and polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS), but the mechanistic models that are needed to understand the effects of exposure conditions on sampling rates need improvement. Literature data on atrazine sampling rates by these samplers were reviewed with the aim of assessing what can be learned from literature reports of this well‐studied compound and identifying knowledge gaps related to the effects of flow and temperature. The flow dependency of sampling rates could be described by a mass transfer resistance model with 1 (POCIS) or 2 (Chemcatcher) adjustable parameters. Literature data were insufficient to evaluate the temperature effect on the sampling rates. An evaluation of reported sampler configurations showed that standardization of sampler design can be improved: for POCIS with respect to surface area and sorbent mass, and for Chemcatcher with respect to housing design. Several reports on atrazine sampling could not be used because the experimental setups were insufficiently described with respect to flow conditions. This evaluation was aimed at the determination of organic contaminants in water bodies in Ugwueme and Lokpanta in Enugu, Nigeria. The analytical study involved the sampling of water bodies both from both locations in order to conduct a comparative and qualitative study of the organic pollutants of the area..The points of sampling include; Oguta river, Lokpanta, Ugwueme spring, Seepage point at Ugwueme, Ugwueme stream and Obilagu river. The obtained result showed in mg/L; phenol (137.93 to 168.58), COD (4.07 to 9.95), BOD (11.89 to 23.99), synthetic detergent (59.6 to 74), grease (0.02 to 0.08%), pH (6.4 to 6.8), Cl (7.81 to 8.56), Br (0.19 to 0.2), asphalthene (133.2 to 178.4), ethylene (125.8 to 180.3), benzene (15.15 to 36.34), tetramethylene (77.3 to 159.1) and naphthene (10.7 to 17.2). The spread flow varied with respect to distance and altitude from the oil seep. The result revealed that the oil seep migration does not flow only at the seen point but gradually soaks into the Owelli from other parts of the contact. The close range of the organic parameter investigation confirms that the seep affects the entire mapped area, thus affecting the waters in the study area adversely showing polluted water. Organic contaminants can be oxidized rapidly in permanganate/bisulfite (PM/BS) process due to generation of Mn(III) aq . However, the influence of O 2 and its role in contaminants degradation in PM/BS process are poorly understood. Thus, the influence of O 2 concentration on phenol removal was quantified and isotopic oxygen tracers ( 18 O-labeled water and 18 O 2 ) were employed to further unravel the mechanisms of PM/BS process. The introduction of O 2 to PM/BS process appreciably improved phenol oxidation. Under oxic conditions the oxidation products of bisulfite included SO 4 2− and HSO 5 − while SO 4 2− was the single stable oxidation product under anaerobic conditions. The oxygen isotope labeling experiments confirmed that HSO 5 − originated from the oxidation of SO 3 − by O 2 to SO 5 − and the following reduction of SO 5 − by HSO 3 − . Incorporation of oxygen isotope from H 2 18 O to MnO 2 due to the disproportionation of Mn(III) aq was observed, which verified the generation of Mn(III) aq in PM/BS process. The critical influence of O 2 on PM/BS process was mainly associated with rapid oxidation of SO 3 − by O 2 to SO 5 − , which otherwise competed with target contaminants for Mn(III) aq . Mangrove forests are exposed to diverse ocean-sourced and land-based contaminants, yet mangrove contamination research lags. We synthesize existing data and identify major gaps in research on five classes of mangrove contaminants: trace metals, persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microplastics, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Research is concentrated in Asia, neglected in Africa and the Americas; higher concentrations are correlated with waste water treatment plants, industry, and urbanized landscapes. Trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, frequently at concentrations below regulatory thresholds, may bioconcentrate in fauna, whereas persistent organic pollutants were at levels potentially harmful to biota through short- or long-term exposure. Microplastics were at variable levels, yet lack regulatory and ecotoxicological thresholds. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products received minimal research despite biological activity at small concentrations. The structure especially the active site manipulation of Fenton-like catalysts was essential for the efficient removal of organic contaminants in the aquatic environment. In this study, the carbonized bacterial cellulose/FeMn oxide composite (CBC@FeMnO x) were synthetized and modified by hydrogen (H 2) reduction to obtain the carbonized bacterial cellulose/FeMn composite (CBC@FeMn), with emphasis on the processes and mechanisms for atrazine (ATZ) attenuation. The results showed that H 2 reduction did not change the microscopic morphology of the composites but destroy the Fe–O and Mn–O structures. Compared with the CBC@FeMnO x composite, the H 2 reduction could promote the removal efficiency from 62% to 100% for CBC@FeMn, as well as the enhancement of degradation rate from 0.021 min−1 to 0.085 min−1. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) displayed that the hydroxyl radicals (•OH) was the major contributor for ATZ degradation. The investigation for Fe and Mn species indicated that H 2 reduction could increase the content of Fe(II) and Mn(III) in the catalyst, thus improving the generation of •OH and accelerating the cycle process between Fe(III)/Fe(II). Owing to the excellent reusability and stability, it was indicated that the H 2 reduction can be considered as an efficient way to regulate the chemical valence of the catalyst, thus enhancing the removal efficiency of aquatic contaminants. Organic contaminants (OCs), such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, flame retardants, and plasticisers, are societally ubiquitous, environmentally hazardous, and structurally diverse chemical compounds whose recalcitrance to conventional wastewater treatment necessitates the development of more effective remedial alternatives. The engineered application of ligninolytic oxidoreductase fungal enzymes, principally white-rot laccase, lignin peroxidase, and manganese peroxidase, has been identified as a particularly promising approach for OC remediation due to their strong oxidative power, broad substrate specificity, low energy consumption, environmental benignity, and cultivability from lignocellulosic waste. By applying an understanding of the mechanisms by which substrate properties influence enzyme activity, a set of semi-quantitative physicochemical criteria (redox potential, hydrophobicity, steric bulk and pKa) was formulated, against which the oxidoreductase degradation susceptibility of twenty-five representative OCs was assessed. Ionisable, compact, and electron donating group (EDG) rich pharmaceuticals and antibiotics were judged the most susceptible, whilst hydrophilic, bulky, and electron withdrawing group (EWG) rich polyhalogenated compounds were judged the least susceptible. OC susceptibility scores were in general agreement with the removal rates reported for experimental oxidoreductase treatments (R2 = 0.60). Based on this fundamental knowledge, and recent developments in enzyme immobilisation techniques, microbiological enzymic treatment strategies are proposed to formulate a new generation of biological wastewater treatment processes for the biodegradation of environmentally challenging OC compounds.

Quantifying the transfer of organic chemicals from the environment into terrestrial plants is essential for assessing human and ecological risks, using plants as environmental contamination biomonitors, and predicting phytoremediation effectiveness. Experimental data describing chemical uptake by plants are often expressed as ratios of chemical concentrations in the plant compartments of interest (e.g., leaves, shoots, roots, xylem sap) to those in the exposure medium (e.g., soil, soil porewater, hydroponic solution, air). These ratios are generally referred to as 'bioconcentration factors' but have also been named for the specific plant compartment sampled, such as 'root concentration factors,' 'leaf concentration factors,' or 'transpiration stream (xylem sap) concentrations factors.' We reviewed over 350 articles to develop a database with 7049 entries of measured bioaccumulation data for 310 organic chemicals and 112 terrestrial plant species. Various experimental approaches have been used; therefore, interstudy comparisons and data-quality evaluations are difficult. Key exposure and plant growth conditions were often missing, and units were often unclear or not reported. The lack of comparable high-confidence data also limits model evaluation and development. Standard test protocols or, at a minimum, standard reporting guidelines for the measurement of plant uptake data are recommended to generate comparable, high-quality data that will improve mechanistic understanding of organic chemical uptake by plants. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent pollutants present in the environment with known mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. In the present study the effects of exposure to single or multiple doses of benzo[ a]anthracene (BaA), pyrene (Pyr), and 3 halogenated derivatives of these compounds (1-chloropyrene, 1-bromopyrene [1-BrPyr], and 7-chlorobenzo[ a]anthracene [7-ClBaA]) were evaluated in a liver-derived human cell line (HepG2). Cytotoxicity as assessed by the classic 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and neutral red assays showed a mild toxic effect in response to single or multiple dose exposure for up to 72 h, except for multiple dose exposure to BaA and 7-ClBaA (1 μM/d for 4 d) and single exposure to 10 μM BaA. Furthermore, selective mitochondrial and lysosomal toxicity was observed for Pyr and BaA series, respectively. To understand the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for this effect, reactive oxygen species production, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, lysosomal pH, DNA fragmentation, and early and late apoptosis mediators were evaluated after exposure to single doses of the compounds. All compounds were able to trigger oxidative stress after 24 h as measured by catalase activity, and a good correlation was found between mitochondrial membrane depolarization, lysosomal pH increase, and MTT and neutral red assays. Evaluation of cell death mediators showed that caspase-3/7, but not annexin-V, pathways were involved in toxicity triggered by the studied compounds. Ethyl carbamate was quantified in cachaça using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection during the production process and during storage in different types of wooden casks and glass containers, with and without the presence of light. According to the physicochemical analysis, the head and tail fractions are unacceptable for consumption. Ethyl carbamate was detected in sugarcane juice and during fermentation. During distillation, ethyl carbamate levels ranged from the limit of detection to 17.1 μg L−1. Ethyl carbamate increased during storage in wooden casks. The presence (or absence) of light did not affect the formation of ethyl carbamate in cachaça stored in glass containers. In this study, the phosphorus (P) fertilizing effects of struvite, one thermochemical-treated sewage sludge ash (SSA) based on Ca-P (Ca-SSA) and one full sulfuric acid-digested SSA based on Al-P (Al-SSA) were analysed in comparison to triple superphosphate (TSP) and a control treatment (CON) without P application in a two-year field experiment. In the field experiment, the effects of the recycling products on crop yield, P uptake and labile soil P fractions were analysed. In addition, the effect of nitrogen and magnesium contained in struvite was investigated in the second year of the experiment compared to TSP and CON. In the first year, spring barley was cultivated in the field experiment; and in the second year, it was forage rye followed by sorghum. In the second year, the relative P effectiveness (forage rye, sorghum) of the recycling products compared to TSP increased in the order: Ca-SSA (81%, 91%) ≤ Al-SSA (91%, 96%) = struvite (102%, 110%). In addition, an magnesium fertilizing effect of struvite could be demonstrated. The sorption of three organic contaminants with different structure and polarity including non-polar phenanthrene (PHEN), 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene (TeCB), and polar 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) onto original kaolinite, smectite, vermiculite, and fulvic acid (FA)/humic acid (HA)-clay complexes were investigated, and possible sorption mechanisms were inferred from sorption isotherms and characteristics of humic substances (HS) and HS-mineral complexes. Results showed smectite and vermiculite had stronger sorption ability than kaolinite, and the adsorbed amount of DCB was much higher than that of PHEN and TeCB on each clay. Due to FA/HA-facilitated hydrophobic interaction, FA/HA-clay complexes except FA-vermiculite complex showed a stronger affinity for PHEN and TeCB than the original clays, particularly for HA-clay complexes. The non-linearity parameter values of n for all the Freundlich sorption isotherms of DCB were greater than 1, indicating that clays possessed some unique sites with strong affinity and capacity to sorb DCB from aqueous solutions. FA/HA did not significantly affect the sorption of polar DCB on clays, implying sorption of DCB on clays was probably due to polar interactions between the polar group of DCB and clays. Cation-π bonding between PHEN and iron cation was directly evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and FA impeded the sorption of PHEN on vermiculite by occupation of iron cation sites. The overarching goal of this study was to ascertain the changes in intraparticle mass transport rates for organic contaminants resulting from nano-enabled hybridization of commercially available granular activated carbon (GAC). Three different nano-enabled hybrid media were fabricated by in-situ synthesizing titanium dioxide nanoparticles inside the pores of GAC sorbent, characterized, and evaluated for removal of two model organic contaminants under realistic conditions to obtain the intraparticle mass transport (pore and surface diffusion) coefficients. The results validated the two hypotheses that: (H1) the pore diffusion rates of organic contaminants linearly decrease with decrease in cumulative pore volume caused by increase in metal (hydr)oxide nanoparticle content inside the pores of the hybrid GAC sorbent; and (H2) introduction of metal (hydr)oxide nanoparticles initially increases surface diffusivity, but additional loading causes its decrease as the increase in metal (hydr)oxide nanoparticles content continues to reduce the porosity of the GAC sorbent. Nano-enabled hybridization of commercially available GAC with metal (hydr)oxides has the potential to significantly increase the intraparticle mass transport limitations for organic contaminants. Introduction of metal (hydr)oxide nanoparticles inside the pores of a pristine sorbent causes the pore diffusion rates of organic contaminants to decrease as the cumulative pore volume is reduced. The dynamics of three classes of organic contaminants, namely n -alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls, were evaluated from the settled suspended particulate matter (SPM) of two wastewater treatment plant outlets (O1 and O2) at the Marseille coast. We used a 1-m-high Plexiglas settling column filled with 7 L of seawater to determine the particles' settling rates, size distribution, and the extent of organic contaminants. Six classes of SPM (50–200 μm particles size) were obtained from 15 fractions of 500-mL successive filtering samples ranging from 30 s to 5 days, including those in the tube wall. The results of the experiment indicated that > 68% of the particles settled within 15 min, which highly correlated with the distribution of organic carbon and contaminant contents. Furthermore, we demonstrated that 9%–13% of the SPM, which contained 5%–11% of the organic contaminants, are non-settable even after 5 days. Extrapolating such behaviour in situ using molecular diagnostic indices for organic contaminant source apportionment indicated that these non-settable contaminant particles are exported to the sea. A sample of the Vinland Map remaining from the radiocarbon dating was analysed with the purpose of identifying the post-1950 contaminant and establishing other evidence on the material composition, identity and condition. The analyses revealed that the parchment originates from a bovid and contains hair remnants. The fibre structure was in poor condition, with fragmented collagen fibres and a low hydrothermal stability. Greenish and reddish particles were observed on the parchment. The greenish particles were identified as basic copper(II) chloride, most probably atacamite, and the reddish particles as rust; that is, various iron(III) oxides. There is an increasing focus around the world on soil contamination by organic compounds due to its harmful effect on human health. Significant efforts have been devoted to the remediation of soil contaminated by organics, leading to the development of various remediation strategies, such as physical remediation, bioremediation, and chemical remediation. Recently, an attractive advanced oxidation process (AOP), non-thermal plasma technology, has drawn increasing attention for the remediation of organic contaminated soil due to the low energy consumption, rapid start-up and shutdown of the process, as well as a low requirement for the pretreatment process of soil, etc. In this work, the current situation of soil contamination by organic pollutants and the existing soil remediation methods were introduced. The research progresses of various non-thermal plasmas for organic contaminated soil remediation were presented, such as dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), pulsed corona plasma, and non-thermal gliding arc fluidized bed. The effects of different parameters (e.g., applied voltage, soil properties, type and feed flow rate of the carrier gas, as well as the reactor configuration) on the remediation performance of non-thermal plasmas were discussed. In the rainy season, rice growing areas in Vietnam often become flooded by up to 1.5 m water. The floodwater brings contaminants from cultivated areas, farms and villages to the rice fields resulting in widespread contamination. In 2012 and 2013, the inorganic and organic contaminants in floodwater was investigated in Thanh Hoa and Hue. Water samples were taken at 16 locations in canals, paddy fields and rivers before and during the flood. In total, 940 organic micro-pollutants in the water samples were determined simultaneously by GC-MS method with automatic identification and quantification system (AIQS), while ICP-MS was used for determination of ten trace elements in the samples. The concentrations of 277 organic micro-pollutants and ten elements (As, Cu, Cd, Cr, Co, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, Al) ranged from 0.01 to 7.6 μg L and 0.1 to 3170 μg L, respectively, in the floodwater. Contaminants originated from industrial sources (e.g. PAH) were detected at low concentrations, ranged from 0.01 to 0.18 μg L, while concentrations of pollutants originated from domestic sources (e.g. sterols, pharmaceuticals and personal care products and pesticides) were ranged from 0.01 to 2.12 μg L. Isoprocarb had the highest detection frequency of 90%, followed by isoprothiolane (88%) and fenobucarb (71%). The results indicated that contaminants in floodwater come from untreated wastewater from villages, and the agricultural activities are the major sources of increased pesticides resuspended in the floodwater in this study. MOF composites with selective, eminent adsorption ability, recycling performance, low cost, and green sustainable approaches as effective environmental adsorbents, have acquired increasing attention, specifically for wastewater treatment. Organic contaminants are easily released into the water through various man-made activities such as numerous synthetic pesticides and detergents, food additives, pharmaceuticals, insecticides, dyes, natural and synthetic fibers, waste solvents, and volatile organic compounds. All of them are dangerous and resistant to different ways of degradation. Since even extremely small amounts of these contaminants in water lead to many problems in the environment and human health, water purification of these impurities has been of great interest to scientists in recent decades. Various strategies have been devised to prevent their environmental malicious effects, and in the case of wastewater purification, a lot of research is underway to find better ways for this purpose. The use of MOF composites on a commercial scale is still a long way off, but researchs clearly demonstrates their promise for treating water contaminated by organic compounds. Thus, this review focuses on studying and summarizing adsorptive and degradative removal of different organic toxic impurities such as dyes, pharmaceuticals , and organic solvents as well as organic volatile compounds by using MOFs composites. In addition, challenges in further development of MOF composites are discussed. According to this study, MOF composites play a pivotal role in the adsorption and removal of polluting agents from wastewater. Combining MOFs with other functional materials can reduce the disadvantages of individual components.
