Is Kyoto School Philosophy of modern Japan truly original? Some answer from the critical side: it is a creative syncretism or eclecticism. In the Aristotelian scheme of potentiality and actuality, a dynamic unity of potentiality and actuality in the movement results in the full self-realization of essence in appearance, i.e., entelecheia; and in the Whiteheadian formula, a new actual entity takes place in the concrescent unity of real potentiality as the past being and pure potentiality as eternal objects or universal forms à la Plato towards the future aim in the creative advancing process. As even Hegel and Heidegger cannot avoid the Christian origin from which their speculative and metaphysical versions of the same content come out, so Kyoto School Philosophy might also be a variation of the Neo-Confucianist metaphysics in the modern context encountering and struggling with European thought in the traditional habit of thinking to integrate all other elements into a hybrid form. For Tanabe a possible unification of relativity and quantum physics or between Buddhism and Christianity is attempted from the standpoint of Absolute Nothingness, and this project may be a technical combination of the past knowledge. What is the difference between Nishida’s idea of Topos as Absolute Nothingness and Tanabe’s one of negative conversion in action within the same ambit of the Kyoto School? While Nishida’s idea of Topos stems from his own unconscious deep structure of consciousness rooted in the agricultural society based on the stable land, Tanabe’s logic of negative conversion reflects the changing time in history. Nishida takes the position of intellectual intuition or contemplation, whereas Tanabe stands by action to transform the given actuality into a formative ideality in and through self-negation. Nishida’s thought might be still static in character, despite his allegation of the formation of the historical world; on the contrary, Tanabe’s is more dynamic due to the perpetually negating activity of conversion. This might correspond to the two different standpoints of one and the same Buddhist cannon, i.e., the Lotus Sutra, which is divided into two parts: one is the standpoint of contemplation of truth, and the other the perspective of the revelation of eternity. The former pertains to the historical horizon of shadowy appearance, and the latter to the original position of eternal essence. The logical method is alternative: either everything is embraced in space, or time reveals truth in process. In the technological age human beings are self-estranged from their own authentic essence, and the paradigm shift is urgently needed for the establishment of a new era at which the last and ultimate God qua the other beginning is anticipated to arrive, as Heidegger points out. Behind the Heideggerian thought, Christian eschatology might be implicitly presupposed as its basic framework, and this insight may correspond to Buddhist eschatology as well. While western thinking is in search of Being as the origin of all entities, the eastern conception of Nothingness is regarded as the ground of being from which the universe comes. The origin of the universe is in dispute of modern astrophysics, and the relationship between Being and Nothingness is the subtle issue having been discussed since the ancient times in East and West. The contemporary Japanese philosopher Hajime Tanabe with Heidegger pursues the problem of the relation of time and eternity from the standpoint of Absolute Nothingness in confrontation with Hegel and Heidegger for advancing a synthetic unification of eastern and western traditions as the appropriate theoretical enterprise for the present world involved in the eschatological situation expecting the possible solutions for the further development of human culture in the future. In the following, a comparison between western and Buddhist thought is attempted to elucidate the relationship between eternity and history through the mediation of human individual action on the basis of the principle of Emptiness or Absolute Nothingness for a construction of the integration of eastern and western intellectual heritage mainly in terms of Tanabe’s triadic logic of dialectic, touching upon the ethical values human freedom implies and great traditions have coped with as well as from the Neo-Aristotelian perspective of the triadic unification of the opposed elements of potentiality and actuality in the dynamic movement for the attainment of a synthetic ideal in reality., В технологический век люди самоотчуждаются от своей собственной подлинной сущности, и требуется срочный сдвиг парадигмы для установления новой эры, с ожидаемым в ней появлением, как указывает Хайдеггер, последнего и окончательного Бога, который и произведет новое начало мира. In western intellectual history Plato’s eternal ideas are contrasted to the Aristotelian actual individual as substance. For Hegel, history is the self-manifesting process of God, in which essence appears and potentiality becomes actuality, arriving at the state existence, and Heidegger prepares and waits for the coming of the last God in the other beginning concealed in the depth of the first beginning. As Schleiermacher and A. Ritschl expound, Christianity has the double focus of Jesus and the Kingdom of God in prolongation to the eschatological future. The Buddhist logic of non-duality does not exclude duality as well in alteration of the Buddha qua the effect and the Bodhisattva qua the cause in history. Nishida’s notion of selfidentity of absolute contradistinction as symmetry in the vertical static dimension of the eternal present differs from Tanabe’s negative conversion in action aiming at a higher unification of the opposed, e.g. relativity and quantum theories, Christianity and Buddhism in the historical development. For Tanabe, eternity in potentiality occurs as an actual event in history through the mediation of human subjective action in the way of self-negation. The fact that the hidden eternal origin is revealed by the historical Buddha might bear a resemblance to the retroactive establishment of the eternal divinity of the human Jesus from the historical perspective. All these facts are indicative of the asymmetry of the elliptic structure of historical actuality with the double focus.
