133. Variational Coherent Quantum Annealing

Abstract

We present a hybrid classical-quantum computing paradigm where the quantum part strictly runs within the coherence time of a quantum annealer, a method we call variational coherent quantum annealing (VCQA). It involves optimizing the schedule functions governing the quantum dynamics by employing a piecewise family of tailored functions. We also introduce auxiliary Hamiltonians that vanish at the beginning and end of the evolution to increase the energy gap during the process, subsequently reducing the algorithm times. We develop numerical tests using z-local terms as the auxiliary Hamiltonian while considering linear, cyclic, and star connectivity. Moreover, we test our algorithm for a non-stoquastic Hamiltonian such as a Heisenberg chain, showing the potential of the VCQA proposal in different scenarios. In this manner, we achieve a substantial reduction in the ground-state error with just six variational parameters and a duration within the device coherence times. Therefore, the proposed VCQA paradigm offers exciting prospects for current quantum annealers., Comment: 7+1 pages and 6 figures

Abstract

Some properties and relations satisfied by the polynomial solutions of a bispectral problem are studied. Given a finite order differential operator, under certain restrictions, its polynomial eigenfunctions are explicitly obtained, as well as the corresponding eigenvalues. Also, some linear transformations are applied to sequences of eigenfunctions and a necessary condition for this to be a sequence of eigenfunctions of a new differential operator is obtained. These results are applied to the particular case of classical Hermite polynomials.

Abstract

Interfacial instabilities are common phenomena observed during adhesion measurements involving viscoelastic polymers or fluids. Typical probe-tack adhesion measurements with soft adhesives are conducted with rigid probes. However, in many settings, such as for medical applications, adhesives make and break contact from soft surfaces such as skin. Here we study how detachment from soft probes alters the debonding mechanism of a model viscoelastic polymer film. We demonstrate that detachment from a soft probe suppresses Saffman-Taylor instabilities commonly encountered in adhesion. We suggest the mechanism for interface stabilization is elastohydrodynamic deformation of the probe and propose a scaling for the onset of stabilization., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

137. Digital-analog quantum computing of fermion-boson models in superconducting circuits

Abstract

We propose a digital-analog quantum algorithm for simulating the Hubbard-Holstein model, describing strongly-correlated fermion-boson interactions, in a suitable architecture with superconducting circuits. It comprises a linear chain of qubits connected by resonators, emulating electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-p) interactions, as well as fermion tunneling. Our approach is adequate for a digital-analog quantum computing (DAQC) of fermion-boson models including those described by the Hubbard-Holstein model. We show the reduction in the circuit depth of the DAQC algorithm, a sequence of digital steps and analog blocks, outperforming the purely digital approach. We exemplify the quantum simulation of a half-filling two-site Hubbard-Holstein model. In such example we obtain fidelities larger than 0.98, showing that our proposal is suitable to study the dynamical behavior of solid-state systems. Abstract

The forces acting on bridge structural elements caused by live loads are computed by live load models defined in design codes. In most cases, such live load models are defined by studies performed on girder bridges, where extreme values of shear forces and bending moment are intended to be predicted. This paper shows that when code live load models are applied to truss bridges, the estimated forces in some structural elements may not be representative of those caused by actual traffic. Three WIM (weigh-in-motion) databases, which are recorded on roads in Mexico, are used as real traffic data. The results suggest that current code live load models are not entirely adequate to estimate forces in structural elements of truss bridges.

140. Cytomegalovirus Retinitis in an Eye with Unilateral Retinoblastoma: A Case Report.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in the setting of pediatric retinoblastoma is exceedingly unusual. Here, we present the first reported case of CMV retinitis in an enucleated eye with retinoblastoma after chemotherapy in the western hemisphere. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-year-old Hispanic male without a family history of retinoblastoma presented with a 3-month history of right eye exotropia and squinting. Clinical examination revealed dense white vitreous opacities in the right eye. Ocular oncology evaluation unveiled an exudative retinal detachment with vitreous seeds, subretinal seeding, and a tumor emanating from the retina in the superonasal quadrant of the right eye. The patient was diagnosed with unilateral Group D retinoblastoma, and RB1 sequencing revealed a pathogenic variant with mosaicism. Treatment involved systemic chemotherapy, intravitreal chemotherapy, and cryotherapy. However, the patient developed a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with diffuse vitreous hemorrhage and ultimately underwent right eye enucleation. Interestingly, histopathological analysis of the enucleated eye revealed concomitant CMV retinitis alongside retinoblastoma. After consultation with infectious disease, antiviral treatment was not initiated as the patient remained asymptomatic and maintained a recovered immune system. Repeat CMV PCR confirmed viral clearance. The patient received a prosthetic eye and continues to be monitored for retinoblastoma recurrence. CONCLUSION: Clinicians should be aware of the potential for CMV retinitis to develop in retinoblastoma patients receiving chemotherapy, which may complicate clinical decision-making and management. Timely identification of CMV retinitis in this setting may improve patient ocular outcomes and overall prognosis.

141. A Feasibility Study on a Portable Vision Device for Patients with Stroke and Brain Tumours.

Abstract

This prospective, single-centre cohort study aimed to evaluate the impact of a portable vision reading device, OrCam Read, on vision-related quality-of-life and independent functional status in patients with low vision due to stroke or brain tumours. Six patients with poor visual acuity or visual field defects due to a stroke or a brain tumour were enrolled at a U.S. Ophthalmology Department. Participants were trained to use OrCam Read and given a loaner device for the 1 month duration of the study. Various assessments, including daily function tests, the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25, and the 10-item neuro-ophthalmic supplement, were administered at the first and last visits. Patients experience with the device was evaluated with weekly telephone and end-of-study satisfaction surveys. The main outcome measures were the patient satisfaction with OrCam and the mean assessment scores between enrolment and final visits. The intervention with OrCam significantly improved patients ability to complete daily tasks and participants reported good satisfaction with the device. The results also show non-significant improvement with distant activities, dependency, and role difficulties. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of studying vision-related quality-of-life using a portable vision device in this patient population and pave the way for a larger study to validate the results of this study.

142. Antimicrobial resistance in food-associated Escherichia coli in Mexico and Latin America.

Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers antimicrobial resistance to be one of the critical global public health priorities to address. Escherichia coli is a commensal bacterium of the gut microbiota in humans and animals; however, some strains cause infections and are resistant to antibiotics. One of the most common ways of acquiring pathogenic E. coli strains is through food. This review analyzes multidrug-resistant E. coli isolated from food, emphasizing Latin America and Mexico, and the mobile genetic elements (MGEs) responsible for spreading antibiotic resistance determinants among bacteria in different environments and hosts. We conducted a systematic search of the literature published from 2015 to 2022 in open access databases and electronic repositories. The prevalence of 11 E. coli pathotypes was described, with diarrheagenic E. coli pathotypes being the most frequently associated with foodborne illness in different Latin American countries, highlighting the presence of different antibiotic resistance genes mostly carried by IncF-type plasmids or class 1 integrons. Although the global incidence of foodborne illness is high, there have been few studies in Mexico and Latin America, which highlights the need to generate updated epidemiological data from the One Health approach, which allows monitoring of the multidrug-resistance phenomenon in E. coli from a common perspective in the interaction of human, veterinary, and environmental health.

Abstract

PURPOSE: To guide clinicians and policymakers in three global resource-constrained settings on treating patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) when Maximal setting-guideline recommended treatment is unavailable. METHODS: A multidisciplinary, multinational panel reviewed existing ASCO guidelines and conducted modified ADAPTE and formal consensus processes. RESULTS: Four published resource-agnostic guidelines were adapted for resource-constrained settings; informing two rounds of formal consensus; recommendations received ≥75% agreement. RECOMMENDATIONS: Clinicians should recommend treatment according to menopausal status, pathological and biomarker features when quality results are available. In first-line, for hormone receptor (HR)-positive MBC, when a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor and CDK 4/6 inhibitor combination is unavailable, use hormonal therapy alone. For life-threatening disease, use single-agent chemotherapy or surgery for local control. For premenopausal patients, use ovarian suppression or ablation plus hormone therapy in Basic settings. For human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive MBC, if trastuzumab, pertuzumab, and chemotherapy are unavailable, use trastuzumab and chemotherapy; if unavailable, use chemotherapy. For HER2-positive, HR-positive MBC, use standard first-line therapy, or endocrine therapy if contraindications. For triple-negative MBC with unknown PD-L1 status, or if PD-L1-positive and immunotherapy unavailable, use single-agent chemotherapy. For germline BRCA1/2 mutation-positive MBC, if poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor is unavailable, use hormonal therapy (HR-positive MBC) and chemotherapy (HR-negative MBC). In second-line, for HR-positive MBC, Enhanced setting recommendations depend on prior treatment; for Limited, use tamoxifen or chemotherapy. For HER2-positive MBC, if trastuzumab deruxtecan is unavailable, use trastuzumab emtansine; if unavailable, capecitabine and lapatinib; if unavailable, trastuzumab and/or chemotherapy (hormonal therapy alone for HR-positive MBC).Additional information is available at www.asco.org/resource-stratified-guidelines.
