The metabolites in the plasma serve as potential biomarkers of disease. We previously established an early-onset diabetes mouse model, Ins2 +/Q104del Kuma mice, under a severe immune-deficient (Rag-2 / Jak3 double-deficient in BALB/c) background. Here, we revealed the differences in plasma amino acid profiles between Kuma and the wild-type mice. We observed an early reduction in glucogenic and ketogenic amino acids, a late increase in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and succinyl CoA-related amino acids, and a trend of increasing ketogenic amino acids in Kuma mice than in the wild-type mice. Kuma mice exhibited hyperglucagonemia at high blood glucose, leading to perturbations in plasma amino acid profiles. The reversal of blood glucose by islet transplantation normalized the increases of the BCAAs and several aspects of the altered metabolic profiles in Kuma mice. Background: Ascending to high altitude can induce a range of physiological and molecular alterations, rendering a proportion of lowlanders unacclimatized. The prediction of acute mountain sickness (AMS) prior to ascent to high altitude remains elusive. Methods: A total of 40 participants were enrolled for our study in the discovery cohort, and plasma samples were collected from all individuals. The subjects were divided into severe AMS-susceptible (sAMS) group, moderate AMSsusceptible (mAMS) group and non-AMS group based on the Lake Louise Score (LLS) at both 5000m and 3700m. Proteomic analysis was conducted on a cohort of 40 individuals to elucidate differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and associated pathways between AMS-susceptible group and AMS-resistant group at low altitude (1400m) and middle high-altitude (3700m). Subsequently, a validation cohort consisting of 118 individuals was enrolled. The plasma concentration of selected DEPs were quantified using ELISA. Comparative analyses of DEPs among different groups in validation cohort were performed, followed by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis to evaluate the predictive efficiency of DEPs for the occurrence of AMS. Results: The occurrence of the AMS symptoms and LLS differed significantly among the three groups in the discovery cohort (p<0.05), as well as in the validation cohort. Comparison of plasma protein profiles using GO analysis revealed that DEPs were primarily enriched in granulocyte activation, neutrophil mediated immunity, and humoral immune response. The comparison of potential biomarkers between the sAMS group and non-AMS group at low altitude revealed statistically higher levels of AAT, SAP and LTF in sAMS group (p=0.01), with a combined area under the curve(AUC) of 0.965. Compared to the mAMS group at low altitude, both SAP and LTF were found to be significantly elevated in the sAMS group, with a combined AUC of 0.887. HSP90-a and SAP exhibited statistically higher levels in the mAMS group compared to the non-AMS group at low altitude, with a combined AUC of 0.874. Conclusion: Inflammatory and immune related biological processes were significantly different between AMS-susceptible and AMS-resistant groups at low altitude and middle high-altitude. Hollow cathodes are widely used in electric thrusters due to their high emission electron density and low maintained voltage. The hollow cathode performance may significantly change under different keeper working conditions. In this study, a series of ground experiments were carried out to study the effects of the keeper current and the distance between keeper and cathode top on the emission characteristics and plume structure of the hollow cathode. The experimental results show that the working state of the keeper electronic circuit is less likely to be disturbed by the anode electronic circuit when the ratio of keeper current to anode current rises up. The plasma potential does not always rise up with the emission current in the far-field (>6 cm) when the keeper current is not high (<3 A). The extend of the distance between keeper and cathode top forms a high obstacle to the anode electronic circuit, this obstacle not only causes an increase of anode voltage, but also leads to a significant discharge instability of hollow cathode. In this case, a higher keeper current and xenon flow rate are required to keep a stable working state of hollow cathodes. Fluorescence lifetime measurements of blood or plasma offer valuable insights into the microenvironment and molecular interactions of fluorophores, particularly concerning albumin. Neutrophil- and hypoxia-induced oxidative stress in COVID-19 pneumonia patients leads to hyperinflammation, various oxidative modifications of blood proteins, and potential alterations in the fluorescence lifetime of tryptophan-containing proteins, especially albumin. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy of blood and plasma as a prompt diagnostic tool for the early diagnosis and severity assessment of COVID-19-associated pneumonia. This study examined a cohort of sixty COVID-19 patients with respiratory symptoms. To investigate whether oxidative stress is the underlying cause of the change in fluorescence lifetime, human serum albumin was treated with chloramine T. The time-resolved spectrometer Life Spec II (Edinburgh Instruments Ltd., Livingston, UK), equipped with a sub-nanosecond pulsed 280 nm diode, was used to measure the fluorescence lifetime of blood and plasma. The findings revealed a significant reduction in the fluorescence lifetime of blood (diluted 200 times) and plasma (diluted 20 times) at 360 nm in COVID-19 pneumonia patients compared with their respective values recorded six months post-infection and those of healthy individuals. Significant negative correlations were observed between the mean fluorescence lifetime of blood and plasma at 360 nm and several severity biomarkers and advanced oxidation protein products, while a positive correlation was found with albumin and the albumin–globulin ratio. The time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy method demonstrates the potential to be used as a preliminary screening technique for identifying patients who are at risk of developing severe complications. Optimization of negative ion sources operated with deuterium may be limited by the lack of data on fundamental processes. Insight can be obtained from studies focusing on a direct comparison of H 2 and D 2 plasmas. Herein, the ECR volume negative ion source 'Prometheus I' operates with both H 2 and D 2 gases and the properties of the generated plasmas are probed by means of electrostatic probe and laser induced photo-detachment. A parametric study, involving pressure and microwave (2.45 GHz) power variation, reveals similar qualitative trends for most of the plasma properties in both gases. However, quantitively, differences do exist for the plasma potential, the electron density and temperature, and the negative ion to electron density ratio. Electron energy distribution functions are thus isotope dependent. Overall, nearly the same maximal H − and D − negative ion densities are achieved (i.e. 4 × 1 0 9 c m − 3 ). Heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) is a unique plasma diagnostics that makes it possible to measure the electric potential φ of high-temperature plasma and its fluctuations , as well as the density and poloidal magnetic field fluctuations. Position of the point of performing measurements in the plasma vertical cross-section depends on the beam energy and angle of its entrance into the plasma. The variation of these two parameters makes it possible to construct a two-dimensional (2D) detector grid, which covers the domain of possible measurements. The measurement results obtained in the detector grid points provide for constructing 2D distributions of plasma parameters. For the OH and ECRH stages of the T-10 tokamak shots, 2D distributions of the plasma electric potential are presented for the regime with the on-axis magnetic field of Bt = 2.2 T, plasma current of Ipl = 230 kA, line-average density of ≈ 1.1 × 1019 m–3 and off-axis ECRH power of PECRH = 1.7 MW. This paper investigates the impact of an axial magnetic field on several plasma parameters of hollow electrode argon abnormal glow discharge. The discharge is generated by applying a DC voltage ranging from 0-6KV. By varying the pressure and magnetic field strength (0-25mT), the plasma potential, frequency, and degree of ionization were measured. The plasma potential, frequency, and degree of ionization were evaluated using spectroscopic measurements of the electron temperature and density. The results of the experiment show that the plasma potential decreases as the magnetic field strength increases, while the plasma frequency increases for lower pressure but reaches a constant value for higher pressure due to the increasing number of excitation collisions among the plasma-charged particles. The degree of ionization, determined using the ideal gas law, shows a near-linear relationship with the axial magnetic field at both low and high pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reports on the synthesis and characterization of MoB 2 /MoB ceramic particulate reinforced W-1 wt % Ni matrix (W1Ni) composites for their potential usage as plasma facing materials. A powder metallurgical route consisting of mechanical alloying (MA), cold pressing (CP), cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and pressureless sintering (PS) was applied for the production of MoB 2 /MoB particulate reinforced W1Ni composites. Different percentages of MoB 2 /MoB (x = 1, 2, 5 and 10 wt %) were incorporated into W1Ni pre-alloy. MA was performed in a planetary ball mill for different times as 24, 48 and 72 h. After compaction using CP and CIP, green bodies were pressureless sintered at 1400 °C for 1 h under Ar/H 2 gas flow. According to the results of XRD characterization, and lattice strain, crystallite size and particle size analyses performed on the powders, MA time was determined as 72 h with an average lattice strain of 2.37% and crystallite size of 7.40 nm. Sintered samples characterized in terms of compositional, microstructural, wear, density and microhardness properties exhibited that W1Ni-10 wt % MoB 2 /MoB composite has the highest hardness value of ∼6.74 GPa and the lowest wear volume loss of 2.08 × 10-4 mm3, as compared to those of other samples. Sintered samples exposed to 20 eV He+ ion irradiation with a flux of 1.102 × 1021 ions/(m2s), irradiation fluence of 1.32 × 1024 ions/m2 for 20 min had a degraded wave-shaped structure (wavy erosion layers) on their surfaces. However, W1Ni-2 wt % MoB 2 /MoB composite showed relatively more resistant to ion irradiation attributed to its higher densification rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

If the gravitational lens is surrounded by non-homogeneous plasma, in addition to the vacuum gravitational deflection, chromatic refraction occurs. Also, the speed of signal propagation decreases compared to a vacuum. In this article, we investigate analytically the time delay in the case of gravitational lensing in plasma, focusing on strong lens systems. We take into account the following contributions: geometric delay due to trajectory bending in the presence of both gravity and plasma; potential delay of the ray in the gravitational field of the lens; dispersion delay in the plasma due to decrease in the speed of light signal in the medium. We consider the singular isothermal sphere as a model of a gravitational lens and the arbitrary spherically symmetric distribution of surrounding plasma. A noninvasive method was developed to measure the electrical potential in an atmospheric pressure plasma jet. The spatiotemporal evolution of electrical potential was measured by a wire electrode in experiment and simulated by a two-dimensional self-consistent numerical model, which demonstrates that the electrical potential along with the traveling ionization wave outside the discharge tube in ambient air plays a significant role on the propagation of ionization wave. It furtherly shows that the enhancement and restriction of ionization wave propagation are dependent on the amplitude of electrical potential on the auxiliary electrode, which proposes the way to manipulate the propagation of ionization wave in atmospheric pulsed discharge plasma jet. Simple Summary: Procoagulant extracellular vesicle (EV) concentrations have been found to increase in several diseases, but the relative contribution of small (sEVs) and large (lEVs) EVs to plasma prothrombotic potential is poorly defined. Our study shows for the first time that the concentration of tissue factor (TF)pos sEVs is significantly higher than that of lEVs. Despite this, the TF-dependent procoagulant potential is primarily sustained by lEVs, although sEVs may also contribute to factor Xa generation when TF pathway inhibitor (TFPI) activity is reduced. Also, in thromboinflammatory conditions, such as COVID-19, the enhanced procoagulant potential that characterizes the infection is predominantly supported by lEVs, although both TFpos-sEVs and -lEVs increase during the acute phase of the disease and return to normal levels with infection remission. Therefore, circulating large EVs, instead of small ones, may be identified as a promising target for a future strategy aiming at reducing the procoagulant potential of blood. The relative contribution of small (sEVs) and large extracellular vesicles (lEVs) to the total plasma procoagulant potential is not yet well defined. Thus, we compared total and TFpos-sEVs and -lEVs isolated from healthy subjects and COVID-19 patients during the acute phase of the infection and after symptom remission in terms of (1) vesicle enumeration using nanoparticle tracking assay, imaging flow cytometry, and TF immunofluorescence localization in a single-vesicle analysis using microarrays; (2) cellular origin; and (3) TF-dependent Xa generation capacity, as well as assessing the contribution of the TF inhibitor, TFPI. In healthy subjects, the plasma concentration of CD9/CD63/CD81pos sEVs was 30 times greater than that of calceinpos lEVs, and both were mainly released by platelets. Compared to lEVs, the levels of TFpos-sEVs were 2-fold higher. The TF-dependent Xa generation capacity of lEVs was three times greater than that of sEVs, with the latter being hindered by TFPI. Compared to HSs, the amounts of total and TFpos-sEVs and -lEVs were significantly greater in acute COVID-19 patients, which reverted to the physiological values at the 6-month follow-up. Interestingly, the FXa generation of lEVs only significantly increased during acute infection, with that of sEV being similar to that of HSs. The understanding of ion dynamics in plasma applications has received significant attention. In this study, we examined these effects between He and Ar species, focusing on the Ar ion flux on the substrate. To control heterogeneous collisions, we varied the He addition rate at fixed chamber pressure and the chamber pressure at fixed Ar/He ratio in an inductively coupled Ar/He plasma source. Throughout the experiments, we maintained an electron density in the bulk plasma and plasma potential as a constant value by adjusting the RF power and applying an additional DC bias to eliminate any disturbances caused by the plasma. Our findings revealed that the addition of He enhances the Ar ion flux, despite a decrease in the Ar ion density at the plasma–sheath boundary due to the presence of He ions. Moreover, we found that this enhancement becomes more prominent with increasing pressure at a fixed He addition rate. These results suggest that the heterogeneous charge transfer collision between Ar atoms and He ions in the sheath region creates additional Ar ions, ultimately leading to an increased Ar ion flux on the substrate. This finding highlights the potential of utilizing heterogeneous charge transfer collisions to enhance ion flux in plasma processing, without the employment of additional equipment. Background: The accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn), an essential step in PD development and progression, is observed not only in neurons but also in glia, including astrocytes. The mechanisms regulating astrocytic α-syn level and aggregation remain unclear. More recently, it has been demonstrated that a part of α-syn spreading occurs through extracellular vesicles (EVs), although it is unknown whether this process is involved in astrocytes of PD. It is known, however, that EVs derived from the central nervous system exist in the blood and are extensively explored as biomarkers for PD and other neurodegenerative disorders. Methods: Primary astrocytes were transfected with A53T α-syn plasmid or exposed to α-syn aggregates. The level of astrocyte-derived EVs (AEVs) was assessed by nanoparticle tracking analysis and immunofluorescence. The lysosomal function was evaluated by Cathepsin assays, immunofluorescence for levels of Lamp1 and Lamp2, and LysoTracker Red staining. The Apogee assays were optimized to measure the GLT-1+ AEVs in clinical cohorts of 106 PD, 47 multiple system atrophy (MSA), and 103 healthy control (HC) to test the potential of plasma AEVs as a biomarker to differentiate PD from other forms of parkinsonism. Results: The number of AEVs significantly increased in primary astrocytes with α-syn deposition. The mechanism of increased AEVs was partially attributed to lysosomal dysfunction. The number of α-syn-carrying AEVs was significantly higher in patients with PD than in HC and MSA. The integrative model combining AEVs with total and aggregated α-syn exhibited efficient diagnostic power in differentiating PD from HC with an AUC of 0.915, and from MSA with an AUC of 0.877. Conclusions: Pathological α-syn deposition could increase the astrocytic secretion of EVs, possibly through α-syn-induced lysosomal dysfunction. Background: Previous research demonstrated the association between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to Kawasaki disease (KD). This study aims to detect the plasma concentration of COX-2 in different phases of KD patients and evaluate the relationship between COX-2 level and coronary artery lesion formation, therapeutic response to intravenous immunoglobulin. Methods: Plasma COX-2 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in KD patients during the acute (a-KD, n = 52), subacute (s-KD, n = 46), and convalescent (c-KD, n = 43) phase. Results: The concentration of COX-2 in the a-KD group was significantly higher than that in the s-KD, c-KD, healthy control or febrile control group, respectively. There was no difference in the levels of COX-2 between the KD with or without coronary artery lesion subgroups, intravenous immunoglobulin resistant, and sensitive subgroups in the a-KD group, respectively. Background and Objectives: Plasma radiation is a widely used technique for sterilization or decontamination in various industries, as well as in some healthcare settings such as dentistry. The primary aim of this study was to assess the potential of plasma radiation to create a new population of Staphylococcus aureus cells with distinct characteristics that could lead to novel healthcare challenges. Materials and Methods: A homemade non-thermal plasma apparatus was applied and the effects of plasma treatment on S. aureus ATCC25923 was assessed. Plasma radiation was applied under controlled conditions to ensure that some bacterial cells remained viable. The treatment was repeated 10 times, with each round followed by a recovery phase to collect any surviving bacterial cells. To assess the potential changes in the bacterial population, we examined the antibiotic susceptibility pattern, micro-structural characteristics using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and total protein profile using the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) technique. Results: The experimental results revealed slight variations in the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of certain cell wall agents (imipenem, cephalothin, and cefepime), as well as in the MALDI-TOF spectra. However, no changes were observed in the SEM images. Conclusion: The insufficient application of non-thermal plasma in bacterial decontamination may lead to physiological changes that could enrich or select certain subpopulations of S. aureus. Atomic layer etching (ALE) has emerged as a promising technique for the precise and controlled removal of materials in nanoscale devices. ALE processes have gained significant attention due to their ability to achieve high material selectivity, etch uniformity, and atomic-scale resolution. This article provides a perspective of the important role of plasma in ALE including thermal ALE for nanometer-scale device manufacturing. Advantages as well as challenges of ALE are discussed in contrast to classic reactive ion etching. A tally-up of known plasma-based ALE processes is listed, and novel thermal ALE processes are described that are based on the so-called ligand addition mechanism. We explain the potential of using plasma for increasing wafer throughput in a manufacturing environment, its use when it comes to anisotropy tuning, the benefits in enabling a wider range of pre-cursors in thermal ALE, and the advantages it may bring for thermal ALE of crystalline materials. The benefits and challenges of different plasma sources in ALE are discussed, and an outlook for future development is provided. The interaction of high-contrast high-intensity laser radiation with solids allows us to create hot or warm plasma of solid or even over-solid density, such as in the case of inertial fusion particularly. The multicharged ions contained in it can no longer be considered isolated. As a result, this leads to a decrease in the ionization potentials and to the disappearance of a number of bound ionic states. To describe the ionization potential depression, two major approaches are now used predominantly, where the key parameter is either average interelectronic or interionic distance. Since neither of the approaches can be substantiated purely theoretically, their applicability can only be established by comparison with experimental results. In recent experiments with X-ray free-electron lasers, it was concluded that the ionization potential depression rather depends on the interelectronic distance. However, when measuring ionization potentials, it was assumed that the main role in ionization processes is played by the direct photoionization of the ion ground state. In the present paper, we show that stepwise photoionization processes should play a significant role in dense plasma, disrupting a straight correspondence between the threshold in direct photoionization by X-ray laser photons and the actual ionization potential of multicharged ions. It means that the measurement results mentioned above are not correct, and the main conclusion about the importance of the interelectronic distance for depression of the ionization potential is not correct. IL-21 is a multifunctional cytokine linked with the pathophysiology of several autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes. In this study, our aim was to examine plasma IL-21 levels in individuals at different stages of type 1 diabetes progression. We measured plasma IL-21 levels, as well as levels of other key pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-17A, TNF-α and IL-6), from 37 adults with established type 1 diabetes and 46 healthy age-matched adult controls, as well as from 53 children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, 48 at-risk children positive for type 1 diabetes-associated autoantibodies and 123 healthy age-matched pediatric controls using the ultrasensitive Quanterix SiMoA technology. Adults with established type 1 diabetes had higher plasma IL-21 levels compared to healthy controls. However, the plasma IL-21 levels showed no statistically significant correlation with clinical variables, such as BMI, C-peptide, HbA1c, or hsCRP levels, evaluated in parallel. In children, plasma IL-21 levels were almost ten times higher than in adults. However, no significant differences in plasma IL-21 levels were detected between healthy children, autoantibody-positive at-risk children, and children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. In conclusion, plasma IL-21 levels in adults with established type 1 diabetes were increased, which may be associated with autoimmunity. The physiologically high plasma IL-21 levels in children may, however, reduce the potential of IL-21 as a biomarker for autoimmunity in pediatric subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel dual-antenna micro plasma thruster (DMPT) driven by radio-frequency (rf) power supply is proposed and characterized experimentally. The Langmuir probe (LP) and the retarding potential analyzer (RPA) are applied to measure the plasma parameters. The results show that compared to the single-antenna, the dual-antenna yields higher electron density, electron temperature, and ion energy. The measurements from the rf I–V probe indicate that the power coupling efficiency for the dual-antenna is about 2.6 times higher than that for the single-antenna. The plasma potential drop in the plume of the DMPT is the reason for the formation of ion beam. The neutral gas temperature is measured by rovibrational ban matching of the first negative band system of ionic nitrogen (N 2 +) for operating powers of 20 W up to 100 W. The total thrust of the DMPT has been calculated by the sum of the ion thrust and the neutral gas thrust. The total thrust at 100 sccm argon flow rate and 100 W rf power is ∼2.23 mN, which indicates an up to 168% thrust gain compared to the cold gas thrust, and a significant 11% total thrust is attributed to the ions' electrostatic acceleration. The specific impulse and thruster efficiency at the above experimental conditions are ∼76 s and ∼0.8%, respectively. These initial results show that the dual-antenna scheme has better performance and is more promising than the traditional single-antenna design for electrodeless micro-electric propulsion. This novel and efficient micro plasma thruster is particularly useful for cubic satellites and scientific experiments in space (such as gravitational wave detection) which require gesture and orbit control of great precision. • The dual-antenna scheme can generate higher plasma density and electron temperature. • The significant phenomenon of higher energy ions was observed in DMPT. • Higher power coupling efficiency in DMPT than that in SMPT. Plasma asymmetry generation in capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) discharges provides control over vital parameters that are useful in many plasma processing applications. In this article, using the particle-in-cell simulation technique, we investigated the spatial plasma asymmetry creation by a temporally asymmetric (sawtooth) waveform by varying its number of harmonics (N). The simulation results predict a non-linear increase in the plasma density and ion flux with an increase in N, i.e., it first decreases, reaching to a minimum value for a critical value of N and then increases almost linearly with a further rise in N. The ionization asymmetry increases with N, and higher harmonics on the instantaneous sheath position are observed for higher values of N. These higher harmonics generate multiple ionization beams that are generated near the expanding sheath edge and are responsible for an enhanced plasma density. The ion energy distribution function (IEDF) depicts a bi-modal shape for different values of N. DC self-bias is observed on the powered electrode, its magnitude with respect to the plasma potential decreases with increasing N, and therefore, the corresponding ion energy on the powered electrode decreases. The results conclude that by changing N of a sawtooth waveform in a collisionless CCP system, the ion flux asymmetry is not altered, whereas sheath symmetry could be significantly affected causing a systematic variation in the ion energy asymmetry. Enhanced confinement is observed in neutral beam injector (NBI)-heated hydrogen discharges made in the stellarator TJ-II after the injection of a single cryogenic fuel pellet into the plasma core. In addition to the expected increase in electron density, ne, in the core after pellet injection (PI), the plasma diamagnetic energy content is seen to rise, with respect to similar discharges without PI, by up to 40%. Furthermore, the energy confinement time, τEdiag, as determined using a diamagnetic loop, is enhanced when compared to predictions obtained using the International Stellarator Scaling law [H. Yamada et al., Nucl. Fusion 45, 1684 (2005)] and the triple product, ne · Ti · τEdiag, exhibits a clear bifurcation point toward an improved confinement branch as compared to the branch product predicted by this scaling law. In general, once such a pellet-induced enhanced confinement (PiEC) phase has been established, it is characterized by steepened radial density gradients, by more negative plasma potential in the core, more negative radial electric fields, Er, across a broad plasma region, as well as by reductions in density and plasma potential fluctuations in the density gradient region. In addition, experimental observations show increased peaking of core radiation losses, this pointing to edge/core plasma decoupling. In parallel, neoclassical simulations of reference and PiEC plasmas predict increased particle and energy confinement times during a PiEC phase together with a more negative Er profile. Qualitative rather than quantitative agreement with experimental parameters is found, indicating that turbulence seems to play a significant role here. In summary, single cryogenic pellet injection facilitates the achievement of an enhanced operational regime that was previously not observed in NBI-heated discharges of the TJ-II. It is unknown whether Torque Teno virus (TTV) DNA load monitoring could anticipate the development of infectious events in hematological patients undergoing treatment with small molecular targeting agents. We characterized the kinetics of plasma TTV DNA in patients treated with ibrutinib or ruxolitinib and assessed whether TTV DNA load monitoring could predict the occurrence of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia or the magnitude of CMV‐specific T‐cell responses. Multicenter, retrospective, observational study, recruiting 20 patients treated with ibrutinib and 21 with ruxolitinib. Plasma TTV and CMV DNA loads were quantified by real‐time PCR at baseline and days +15, +30, +45, +60, +75, +90, +120, +150, and +180 after treatment inception. Enumeration of CMV‐specific interferon‐γ (IFN‐γ)‐producing CD8+ and CD4+ T‐cells in whole blood was performed by flow cytometry. Median TTV DNA load in ibrutinib‐treated patients increased significantly (p = 0.025) from baseline (median: 5.76 log10 copies/mL) to day +120 (median: 7.83 log10 copies/mL). A moderate inverse correlation (Rho = −0.46; p < 0.001) was found between TTV DNA load and absolute lymphocyte count. In ruxolitinib‐treated patients, TTV DNA load quantified at baseline was not significantly different from that measured after treatment inception (p ≥ 0.12). TTV DNA load was not predictive of the subsequent occurrence of CMV DNAemia in either patient group. No correlation was observed between TTV DNA loads and CMV‐specific IFN‐γ‐producing CD8+ and CD4+ T‐cell counts in either patient group. The data did not support the hypothesis that TTV DNA load monitoring in hematological patients treated with ibrutinib or ruxolitinib could be useful to predict either the occurrence of CMV DNAemia or the level of CMV‐specific T‐cell reconstitution; nevertheless, due to the small sample size, further studies involving larger cohorts are warranted to elucidate this issue. The standard model for Ca2+ oscillations in insulin-secreting pancreatic β cells centers on Ca2+ entry through voltage-activated Ca2+ channels. These work in combination with ATP-dependent K+ channels, which are the bridge between the metabolic state of the cells and plasma membrane potential. This partnership underlies the ability of the β cells to secrete insulin appropriately on a minute-to-minute time scale to control whole body plasma glucose. Though this model, developed over more than 40 years through many cycles of experimentation and mathematical modeling, has been very successful, it has been challenged by a hypothesis that calcium-induced calcium release from the endoplasmic reticulum through ryanodine or inositol trisphosphate (IP3) receptors is instead the key driver of islet oscillations. We show here that the alternative model is in fact incompatible with a large body of established experimental data and that the new observations offered in support of it can be better explained by the standard model. The Northern shoveler, Spatula clypeata, makes several migratory stopovers to reach its breeding site in the best conditions. These stopovers allow the species to replenish their reserves. Therefore, feeding efficiency at such sites is essential. Despite its importance, few studies have been conducted on the spring ecology of the shoveler, particularly on its diet at stopover sites. Therefore, this study focused on the Northern shoveler's feeding habit during its spring migratory stopover in the Marais breton (MB), a wetland situated in Vendée (France, Atlantic coast). The shoveler's plasma and potential food resources were studied using a stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis. The study showed that the shoveler feeds primarily on microcrustaceans, especially Cladocera and Copepoda; Chironomidae larvae, Corixidae, Hydrophilidae larvae, and particulate organic matter. In the process of plasma figure correction for a quartz sub-mirror, the plasma parallel removal process and ink masking layer are combined for the first time. A universal plasma figure correction method based on multiple distributed material removal functions is demonstrated, and its technological characteristics are analyzed. Through this method, the processing time is independent of the workpiece aperture, which saves time for the material removal function to scan along the trajectory. After seven iterations, the form error of the quartz element is converged from the initial figure error of ~114 nm RMS to a figure error of ~28 nm RMS, which shows the practical potential of the plasma figure correction method based on multiple distributed material removal functions in optical element manufacturing and the possibility of becoming a new stage process in the optical manufacturing chain. Breast cancer (BC) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are among the most common types of cancer, but current clinical outcomes remain unsatisfactory. Available therapies have limitations in terms of efficacy and may also cause severe side effects. Cold physical plasma is a promising approach for selectively eliminating cancer cells while avoiding genotoxic effects on non-malignant cells. In this study, we investigated the potential of cold physical plasma as a therapeutic intervention for BC and OSCC through in vitro and ex vivo studies on toxicity. For the in vitro study, T-47 BC cells and SCC-4 and SCC-9 OSCC cell lines were used, and we found cold plasma to be toxic in a treatment time-dependent manner. Moreover, we investigated the safety of physical plasma therapy and found no genotoxic potential in plasma-treated human keratinocytes in vitro. Finally, for the first time, 20 BC and OSCC patient-derived tumor tissues were punch biopsied and ex vivo-exposed to cold physical plasmas to study responses in the tumor microenvironment TME). Cold physical plasma caused significant apoptosis in patient-derived BC and OSCC tumor tissues, and decreased the number of CD163+ cells (e.g., tumor-associated macrophages, TAM) in BC tissue plasma-treated ex vivo. In high density, high temperature plasmas, the plasma sheath that develops can result in extremely high electric fields, on the order of tens to hundreds of V/nm. Under the right conditions, these electric fields can reach magnitudes that can increase the probability of electron tunneling ionization to occur, resulting in one or more electron-ion pairs. The presence of tunneling ionization can then modify the development of the plasma sheath, as well as properties such as the ion and electron densities and plasma potential. The tunnel ionization process for hydrogen atoms is demonstrated, in this work, as implemented in a Sandia National Laboratories, particle-in-cell code Aleph. Results are presented for the application of the tunnel ionization process to a one-dimensional, undriven plasma sheath. Additional results for cases that consider warm ions and neutrals, the inclusion of electron–neutral collisions, and the injection of neutral particles, as well as the application to various plasma devices, will be discussed. One of the promising applications of low-temperature plasma in crossed electric and magnetic fields is plasma mass separation. To its implementation it is necessary to create a magnetized plasma with a given spatial distribution of the plasma potential. Plasma potential distribution determines the particle trajectories during separation. One of the difficulties that lie in the way of creating an efficient separator is the oscillations of the plasma potential resulting from the development of various types of instabilities. In the present work, fluctuations of the plasma potential in a reflex discharge with a thermionic cathode are studied. An analysis of the frequencies of plasma potential oscillations for magnetic fields in the range of 1–1.4 kG is presented. The object of this study was the substances that could be used to generate arc plasma. Conventional and promising plasma media were analyzed in order to identify the most universal one in terms of a set of properties for efficient energy transfer of material. It is shown that the mean-enthalpy media have a harmonious ratio of temperature and enthalpy and could provide a change in the energy state of the processed material with maximum efficiency. It is established that the most universal set of properties is demonstrated by the medium enthalpy plasma of the N-O-C-H system. The use of mixtures of air with hydrocarbons for its generation makes it possible to reach the average mass temperature of (5...7)·10³ K and change the oxidative-reducing potential of the plasma medium over a wide range. Given this, heat treatment is possible with maximum preservation of the original composition of the material. Experimental studies of plasma flows of the N-O-C-H system confirmed the presence of reducing components capable of binding oxygen to air that is sucked into the jet. On rich mixtures, the oxygen content in the jet at a distance of 100 mm does not exceed 5 %. The positive effect of combined energy input into plasma-forming substance on the process of generation and formation of plasma jet has been proven. The use of energy of different physical nature makes it possible to maintain the local energy parameters of the plasma flow during material processing. This is due to the release of additional heat as a result of the interaction of plasma and plasma components with ambient air. Background: Cell free RNA (cfRNA) contains transcript fragments from multiple cell types, making it useful for cancer detection in clinical settings. However, the pathophysiological origins of cfRNAs in plasma from colorectal cancer (CRC) patients remain unclear. Methods: To identify the tissue-specific contributions of cfRNAs transcriptomic profile, we used a published single-cell transcriptomics profile to deconvolute cell type abundance among paired plasma samples from CRC patients who underwent tumor-ablative surgery. We further validated the differentially expressed cfRNAs in 5 pairs of CRC tumor samples and adjacent tissue samples as well as 3 additional CRC tumor samples using RNA-sequencing. Results: The transcriptomic component from intestinal secretory cells was significantly decreased in the in-house post-surgical cfRNA. The HPGD, PACS1, and TDP2 expression was consistent across cfRNA and tissue samples. Using the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) CRC datasets, we were able to classify the patients into two groups with significantly different survival outcomes. Conclusions: The three-gene signature holds promise in applying minimal residual disease (MRD) testing, which involves profiling remnants of cancer cells after or during treatment. TDP-43 intracellular aggregates are a pathogenic sign of most amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cases. Familial ALS, brought on by TARDBP gene mutations, emphasizes the relevance of this altered protein in pathophysiology. Growing evidence suggests a role for dysregulated microRNA (miRNA) in ALS disease. Furthermore, several studies showed that miRNAs are highly stable in various biological fluids (CSF, blood, plasma, and serum), and they are expressed differentially by comparing ALS patients and controls. In 2011, our research group discovered a rare mutation in a TARDBP gene (G376D) in a large ALS Apulian family with affected members exhibiting a rapidly progressing disease. To identify potential non-invasive biomarkers of preclinical and clinical progression in the TARDBP-ALS family, we assessed the expression levels of plasma microRNAs in affected patients (n = 7) and asymptomatic mutation carriers (n = 7) compared with healthy controls (n = 13). Applying qPCR, we investigate 10 miRNAs that bind TDP-43 in vitro during their biogenesis or in their mature form, and the other nine are known to be deregulated in the disease. We highlight the potential of miR-132-5p, miR-132-3p, miR-124-3p, and miR-133a-3p expression levels in plasma as biomarkers of preclinical progression for G376D-TARDBP-associated ALS. Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the potential application of plasma signal peptide‐complement C1r/C1s, Uegf and Bmp1‐epidermal growth factor domain‐containing protein 1 (SCUBE‐1) as a biomarker in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE). Methods: This cross‐sectional study enrolled 177 patients who underwent PE diagnostic test and 87 healthy controls. The results of CT pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) were used as reference standards for PE diagnosis. The levels of SCUBE‐1 and D‐dimer in participants' plasma were detected with enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay and compared among patients with confirmed PE, suspicious PE and healthy controls. The diagnostic values were analysed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. In addition, differences in plasma SCUBE‐1 levels were compared among patients with different risk stratifications. Results: The plasma SCUBE‐1 concentration levels in patients with CTPA confirmed PE (14.28 ± 7.74 ng/ml) was significantly higher than those in the suspicious patients (11.11 ± 4.48 ng/ml) and in healthy control (4.40 ± 3.23 ng/ml) (P < 0.01). ROC curve analysis showed that at the cut‐off of 7.789 ng/ml, SCUBE‐1 has significant diagnostic value in differentiating PE patients from healthy control (AUC = 0.919, sensitivity = 81.25%, specificity = 92.13%), and the performance is more accurate than D‐dimer (cut‐off 273.4 ng/ml, AUC = 0.648, sensitivity = 65.75%, specificity = 67.42%). The combination of D‐dimer with SCUBE‐1 did not further improve the diagnostic value. However, SCUBE‐1 did not show significant diagnostic value in identifying PE among suspicious patients There was no significant difference in SCUBE‐1 level among different risk groups (P > 0.05). Despite over 90 years of study on the emissive probe, a plasma diagnostic tool used to measure plasma potential, its underlying physics has yet to be fully understood. In this study, we investigated the voltages along the hot filament wire and emitting thermal electrons and proved which voltage reflects the plasma potential. Using a circuit model incorporating the floating condition, we found that the lowest potential on the plasma-exposed filament provides a close approximation of the plasma potential. This theoretical result was verified with a comparison of emissive probe measurements and Langmuir probe measurements in inductively coupled plasma. The subsonic plasma channel and water can be regarded as series resistors in the pre-breakdown stage of sub-millisecond pulsed discharge in conductive water. An improved resistance model of the positive subsonic plasma channel is proposed. The gap resistance and the morphology of the bubble cluster and the plasma channel inside it are obtained from the electrical measurement and optical observation, respectively. The resistance of the plasma channel in the strong-ionization stage is calculated using the small-current arc resistance model. The improved model of the water resistance is established by analyzing the relationship between its equivalent cross-sectional area and its length in an uneven electric field. The resistance of the plasma channel in the weak-ionization stage is calculated. The resistance, voltage, and energy in the gap are analyzed based on the improved resistance model. The plasma channel's resistance is far less than the water resistance. The low voltage drop in the plasma channel leads to a high electric potential in the plasma channel's head, which is conducive to the plasma channel's development. 97% of the total energy in the pre-breakdown stage is consumed by the water resistor. Background: Participant eligibility for the A4 Study was determined by amyloid PET imaging. Given the disadvantages of amyloid PET imaging in accessibility and cost, blood-based biomarkers may serve as a sufficient biomarker and more cost-effective screening tool for patient enrollment into preclinical AD trials. Objective: To determine if a blood-based screening test can adequately identify amyloid burden in participants screened into a preclinical AD trial. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 224 participants from the A4 Study received an amyloid PET scan (18Florbetapir) within 90 days of blood sample collection. Blood samples from all study participants were processed within 2 h after phlebotomy. Plasma amyloid measures were quantified by Shimazdu and C2 N Diagnostics using mass spectrometry-based platforms. A corresponding subset of blood samples (n = 100) was processed within 24 h after phlebotomy and analyzed by C2 N. Results: Plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 demonstrated the highest association for Aβ accumulation in the brain with an AUC 0.76 (95%CI = 0.69, 0.82) at C2 N and 0.80 (95%CI = 0.75, 0.86) at Shimadzu. Blood samples processed to plasma within 2 h after phlebotomy provided a better prediction of amyloid PET status than blood samples processed within 24 h (AUC 0.80 versus 0.64; p < 0.001). Age, sex, and APOE ɛ4 carrier status did not the diagnostic performance of plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 to predict amyloid PET positivity in A4 Study participants. Conclusion: Plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 may serve as a potential biomarker for predicting elevated amyloid in the brain. Background Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most prevalent (20%) pathological cancer among males globally. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short (19–22 nucleotide), conserved, noncoding molecules that regulate post-transcriptional processes either by repressing or degrading mRNA or by translation inhibition binding to complementary sites on mRNA. The goal of this study was to find out whether differentially expressed microRNA (DEM) could be used as a potential marker in the prognosis and diagnosis of PCa. Methodology The miRNAs profiling was done both from plasma and tissue samples of the same PCa patient (n = 3) by real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) and compared with BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) patients (n = 3) as controls and further validation of selected miRNAs. Results We found 55 significant overexpressed DEMs, 44 significant underexpressed DEMs in plasma and 6 significant overexpressed DEMs, 27 significant underexpressed DEMs in tissue compared between PCa and BPH. Furthermore, there were eight miRNAs namely miR-190b, miR-215, miR-300, miR-329, miR-504, miR-525-3p, miR-527, miR-548a-3p found to be significantly differentially expressed in plasma and tissue samples via profiling, however only three showed concordant expression. After validation, miR-190b-5p were shown to be significantly downexpressed with fold changes of 0.4177 (p value – 0.0072) and 0.7264 (p value – 0.0143) in plasma and tissue samples, respectively. The expression of miR-215-5p was shown to be significantly overexpressed with fold change of 1.820 (p – 0.0016) and 1.476 (p – 0.0407) in plasma and tissue samples, respectively. Furthermore, miR-527 was shown to be significantly downexpressed with fold changes of 0.6018 (p – 0.0095) and 0.6917 (p – 0.0155) in plasma and tissue samples, respectively. Conclusion According to our findings, plasma miR-190b-5p, miR-215-5p, miR-527 levels alteration is consistently linked with PCa tissue. A planar Langmuir probe, which can be used for both ion electric propulsion beam characteristics measurement and plasma diagnosis, was developed and applied to plume measurement and diagnosis experiments of an 8 cm Kaufman ion thruster to address the growing demand for miniaturized ion thruster plume measurement and diagnosis. The experimental results show that the plume area exhibits good symmetry along the central axis, and the beam dispersion angle of the 8 cm ion thruster is approximately 22.7°. The radial distributions of the floating potential, plasma space potential and ion density are similar, showing a high distribution in the middle and a relatively low distribution at the two ends. The miniaturized ion thruster plume measurement and diagnosis system is not only easy to manipulate, but also fast and efficient for plasma plume measurement and diagnosis, which provides more complete data support for analyzing the working state of the miniaturized ion thrusters and optimizing the design of the thruster structure. This paper mainly experimentally studies the imidacloprid degradation in an atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The effects of DBD discharge parameters, temperature and initial concentration on the degradation ratio were investigated with the help of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The analyses of HPLC-MS (mass spectrometry) and the comparison with database proved that after plasma treatment four new degradation products were generated. It shows that plasma treatment can effectively degrade imidacloprid and the degradation effect depends on the initial concentration of imidacloprid as well as discharge voltage and treatment time. Under the proper plasma parameters, the degradation ratio can be up to 98%. The increase in temperature caused by plasma discharge only affected the degradation ratio by a few percent, which is negligible compared to that by plasma itself. Nonthermal plasmas are attractive sources for nanoparticles synthesis, however, their plasma properties are notoriously difficult to assess due to the chemically reactive environment and high nanoparticle concentrations. Here, we are using a floating double probe to measure the plasma properties of a nanoparticle-forming argon:silane plasma. We demonstrate good stability of current–voltage characteristics over several minutes of operation. However, unexpectedly larger electron temperatures are measured with increasing the silane mole fraction. To test the validity of these results, we developed a zero-dimensional global model to investigate the effect of the presence of nanoparticles on the plasma properties. Using this model, we show that increasing particle concentration leads to an increasing electronegativity of the plasma, causing an increase of the reduced electric field. However, this causes only a moderate increase in mean electron energy, in contrast to the much larger increase measured by the double probe. We argue that these large electron temperatures are based on the fact that a double probe measures an 'apparent' electron temperature, which is defined by the negative inverse slope of the logarithm of the electron energy probability function (EEPF) at an energy corresponding to the probe's floating potential. As the silane mole fraction is increased, the plasma becomes more electronegative and the probe's floating potential moves closer to the plasma potential. Combined with the strong non-Maxwellian EEPF, this leads to the large apparent electron temperatures obtained by the probe. OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential use of plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) in diagnosis of acute venous thromboembolism (VTE). METHODS: Using BGISEQ-500 sequencing technology, we analyzed the miRNA profile of paired plasma samples from the acute and chronic phases of four patients with unprovoked VTE. Using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), we verified nine upregulated named miRNAs in the acute phase in the plasma samples of 54 patients with acute VTE and 39 controls. We then compared the relative expression of the 9 candidate miRNAs between the acute VTE and control group, and plotted the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of the differentially expressed miRNAs. We chose the miRNA with the greatest area under curve (AUC) to evaluate the effect of miRNA on coagulation and platelet function in the plasma samples of 5 healthy volunteers. RESULTS: The plasma levels of miR-374b-3p, miR-660-5p, miR-378a-3p, miR-425-5p, miR-3613-5p, miR-130b-3p, miR-183-5p, and miR-103b were higher in patients with acute VTE than in the controls, with AUCs of 0.6776, 0.6614, 0.6648, 0.6885, 0.8048, 0.6871, 0.7298, and 0.7498, respectively, and P values of 0.0036, 0.0081, 0.0069, 0.0020,<0.0001, 0.0022, 0.0002, and < 0.0001, respectively. There were no significant differences in miR-193b-5p level between the acute VTE group and the control group. Fibrinogen (Fib), thrombin– antithrombin complex (TAT), tissue plasminogen activator-inhibitor complex (t-PAIC), and TAT/plasmin-α2-plasmin inhibitor complex (PIC) were decreased in the miR-3613-5p group when compared with the control group (P < 0.05) and the mean platelet aggregation rate was increased in the miR-3613 group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: miRNAs can be potential biomarkers for diagnosing acute VTE, and miR-3613-5p may be involved in the formation, coagulation, and platelet functions in acute VTE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elevated TNF-α levels in serum and broncho-alveolar lavage fluid of acute lung injury patients correlate with mortality rates. We hypothesized that pharmacological plasma membrane potential (Em) hyperpolarization protects against TNF-α-induced CCL-2 and IL-6 secretion from human pulmonary endothelial cells through inhibition of inflammatory Ca2+-dependent MAPK pathways. Since the role of Ca2+ influx in TNF-α-mediated inflammation remains poorly understood, we explored the role of L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ (CaV) channels in TNF-α-induced CCL-2 and IL-6 secretion from human pulmonary endothelial cells. The CaV channel blocker, Nifedipine, decreased both CCL-2 and IL-6 secretion, suggesting that a fraction of CaV channels is open at the significantly depolarized resting Em of human microvascular pulmonary endothelial cells (−6 ± 1.9 mV), as shown by whole-cell patch-clamp measurements. To further explore the role of CaV channels in cytokine secretion, we demonstrated that the beneficial effects of Nifedipine could also be achieved by Em hyperpolarization via the pharmacological activation of large conductance K+ (BK) channels with NS1619, which elicited a similar decrease in CCL-2 but not IL-6 secretion. Using functional gene enrichment analysis tools, we predicted and validated that known Ca2+-dependent kinases, JNK-1/2 and p38, are the most likely pathways to mediate the decrease in CCL-2 secretion. The proteomic analysis of plasma holds great promise to advance precision medicine and identify biomarkers of disease. However, it is likely that many potential biomarkers circulating in plasma originate from other tissues and are only present in low abundances in the plasma. Accurate detection and quantification of low abundance proteins by standard mass spectrometry approaches remain challenging. In addition, it is difficult to link low abundance plasma proteins back to their specific tissues or organs of origin with confidence. To address these challenges, we developed a mass spectrometry approach based on the use of tandem mass tags (TMT) and a tissue reference sample. By applying this approach to nonhuman primate plasma samples, we were able to identify and quantify 820 proteins by using a kidney tissue homogenate as reference. On average, 643 ± 16 proteins were identified per plasma sample. About 58% of proteins identified in replicate experiments were identified both times. A ratio of 50 μg kidney protein to 10 μg plasma protein, and the use of the TMT label with the highest molecular weight (131) for the kidney reference yielded the largest number of proteins in the analysis, and identified low abundance proteins in plasma that are prominently found in the kidney. Overall, this methodology promises efficient quantification of plasma proteins potentially released from specific tissues, thereby increasing the number of putative disease biomarkers for future study. The effect of trapped non-thermal polarization force on low-frequency solitary waves (dust acoustic solitons) is addressed in a collisionless complex plasma. For this purpose, we have firstly redefined the three-dimensional Cairns–Gurevich distribution that describes, simultaneously, the evolution of the energetic ions and those trapped in the plasma potential well, and derived the associated both density and polarization force expressions. The polarization force effects are remarkably modified due to the presence of the trapped non-thermal ions. In particular, we have found that the polarization force magnitude decreases with the increase of ion non-thermality character. Next, the modifications arising in dust-acoustic (DA) solitons and its energy due to the presence of these trapped non-thermal density and polarization force are analyzed. In particular, we have found that the presence of the polarization force leads to an increase in the amplitude and width of DA solitary wave can be propagated in different complex plasma media. Finally, a complementary study on the polarization force effects on the DA energy, associated with both space and experimental dusty plasmas, is also carried out. Long wavelength plasma non-uniformities rotating in the azimuthal direction ("rotating spokes") have been observed in a number of experiments on Hall thrusters or magnetron discharges. We use a two-dimensional (2D), axial-azimuthal particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collisions model to study the formation of instabilities in a direct current magnetron discharge under conditions close to recent experiments. Despite the simplified 2D geometry of the model, the simulations can reproduce the main features of the experimental results. At a given position above the cathode, corresponding to the spoke location, the simulations show large amplitude oscillations of the plasma density and a very sharp increase in the plasma potential and electron temperature at the leading edge of the spoke, as in time resolved probe measurements. Moreover, the simulations show that the instability evolves in time from a gradient-drift type of instability in the linear phase, to an ionization wave in the non-linear phase, with rotation in the + E × B direction in the first phase and in the − E × B direction in the second phase. The number of spokes is found to increase with pressure, as in experiments. The mechanisms of electron heating and the role of the B × ∇ B drift in electron heating and in the coherence and direction of spoke rotation are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The basic interest of studying the ion flow dynamics in a disk-shaped inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IECF) device is to achieve an explicit condition where large fusion products are possible from such a portable device, and then, it can be used for a wide range of applications. We modified the existing IECF device by introducing two external grids along with the central grid and investigated the plasma properties using the Langmuir probe technique at different operating voltages in this new configuration of the device. By taking measurements of the plasma properties throughout the chamber, the device is optimized for better ion confinement and ion flow behavior. A well-established comparison of plasma properties, such as ion density and potential in this new arrangement, has been carried out with the single-gridded IECF system. The triple grid arrangement switches to a lower working pressure region, and hence high energetic ion beams are procured. Because of the different discharge mechanisms, variations in plasma potential profile and ion confinement processes are observed when compared to the single-gridded IECF device. The major acute phase proteins (APPs) in cattle are haptoglobin (Hp) and serum amyloid A (SAA), and in swine, are Hp, SAA, C‐reactive protein (CRP), and Pig major acute phase protein (Pig‐MAP). Many methodologic assays are presently available to measure these parameters, which are still being improved to increase their specificity, sensitivity, user‐friendliness, and economic availability. In cattle, the main applications are the diagnosis and monitoring of frequent diseases such as mastitis and metritis in dairy cows and respiratory problems in young calves. In pigs, APPs are useful in the control of bacterial and viral infections, and they may be used at the slaughterhouse to monitor subclinical pathologies and improve food safety. The utility of APP in animal production must not be forgotten; optimization of protocols to improve performance, welfare, and nutrition may benefit from the use of APPs. Other sample types besides serum or plasma have potential uses; APP determination in milk is a powerful tool in the control of mastitis, saliva is a non‐invasive sample type, and meat juice is easily obtained at the slaughterhouse. Increasing our knowledge of reference intervals and the influence of variables such as age, breed, sex, and the season is important. The potential of cold plasma (CP) treatment to promote the formation of amyloid fibrils (AFs) of ovalbumin (OVA) was evaluated relative to acidic heat fibrillation condition (pH = 2, 85 °C). Results indicated CP exhibited significant potential for promoting the formation of AFs of OVA, as evidenced by higher Thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence intensity of AFs for CP-treated OVA (POVA) during the fibrillation process compared to AFs for native OVA under acidic heating conditions (NOVA). Long, curved and worm-like fibrils of CP-treated OVA with 2 min (POVA-2), which were thicker (3 nm in height) and longer (majority length ranging from 300 nm to 400 nm), were observed after 8 h of fibrillation, while irregular, short, worm-like fibrils of NOVA were detected. Unlike NOVA, which was only hydrolyzed into small peptides, the backbone of POVA-2 was cleaved into small peptide fragments, accompanied by the generation of dityrosine cross-linked aggregation/oligomer during fibrillation process, as evidenced by SDS-PAGE and dityrosine analysis. The result of hydrophobic, sulfhydryl and disulfide bonds, and dityrosine analysis showed hydrophobic interaction and dityrosine cross-links could be the main force driving the assembly and stacking of cross-β structures, leading to the formation of organized fibrillar structures for POVA-2, while only hydrophobic interaction was involved for NOVA. Additionally, analyses of emulsifying ability (EAI) and stability (ESI) of NOVA and POVA-2 displayed that both EAI and ESI of them were significantly improved, with POVA-2 exhibiting superior EAI compared to NOVA. Therefore, this study demonstrated CP is a promising technique to promote the generation of protein amyloid fibrils in a more efficient manner.
