Rapid, accurate, and convenient diagnosis is essential for effective disease management. Various detection methods, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, have been extensively used, with lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) recently emerging as a major diagnostic tool. Nanoparticles (NPs) with characteristic optical properties are used as probes for LFIA, and researchers have presented various types of optical NPs with modified optical properties. Abstract

WaterHCI (Water-Human-Computer Interaction) is a field of study and practice focusing on the design and creation of interactive devices, systems, and experiences at the intersection of water, humans, and technology. It is a relatively new field that originated in Ontario, Canada, in the 1960s, and was further developed at University of Toronto through a series of annual (de)conferences from 1998 to present. This year, at our 24th annual WaterHCI (de)conference, we focus our attention on ideas for creating spaces and places (e.g. Ontario-Placemaking\tma) that combine fun and frolic with health and wellbeing, nature and spirituality, research and teaching, and innovation, where we can touch and be touched by water.

We provide taxonomies of the various kinds of water-human interaction, identify important past, present, and future contributions and trends in WaterHCI from around the world, and identify grand challenges of this new discipline.

140. Optimizing the replacement ratio of ion exchange resins in polishing plants by characterization and cost evaluation

Abstract

An ion exchange process in a power plant was investigated to provide a means to lower operating costs by optimizing exchange ratios of used resins. Ion exchange resins were obtained and tested according to ASTM standards to find the difference of capacity after long term use. Moreover, we used Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) methods to identify the adsorbed impurities and exhausted functional groups. The cation and anion exchange resins showed a drop of 0.39 and 0.53 eq/L in total capacity, respectively, also corresponding to the drop and increase of peaks found through FT-IR. Finally, a cost analysis was conducted to optimize the performance of ion exchange resins with the lowest cost possible. Our results showed that ion exchange processes are heavily related to operation costs. A proposed total cost of ownership model will help stakeholders decide on cost-effective ion exchange processes while being able to maintain ultrapure quality. Moreover, results conducted through standardized tests will be able to compare with the results provided.
