Background and Objectives: Implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED), including permanent pacemakers (PM), implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, has increased significantly over the past several years. However, limited data exists regarding temporal trends of CIED implantations in Asian population. This study aimed to investigate temporal trends of CIED treatment in Korea., Methods: Using the National Health Insurance Service database of the entire Korean adult population, temporal trends of CIED procedures between 2009 and 2016 were evaluated. Additionally, temporal changes in the prevalence of patients' comorbidities were evaluated., Results: A total of 35,421 CIED procedures (new implantations: 27,771, replacements: 7,650) were performed during the study period. The mean age of new CIED recipients and the prevalence of comorbidities, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, stroke, and atrial fibrillation, increased substantially with time. Compared to 2009, the number of new implantations of PM, ICD, and CRT devices increased by 2.0 (1,977 to 3,910), 3.6 (230 to 822), and 4.9 (44 to 217) times in 2016, respectively. The annual new implantation rate of CIED also increased accordingly (5.1 to 9.3 for PM, 0.6 to 1.9 for ICD, and 0.1 to 0.5 for CRT devices, per 100,000 persons)., Conclusions: The number of CIED implantation increased substantially from 2009 to 2016 in Korea. Also, the patients with CIED have been changed to be older and have more comorbidities. Background: The use of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has substantially increased in clinical laboratories worldwide. To assess the status of clinical LC-MS/MS testing in Korean laboratories, a questionnaire survey was performed by the Clinical Mass Spectrometry Research Committee of the Korean Society of Clinical Chemistry., Methods: The questionnaire was distributed to 19 clinical laboratories performing clinical LC-MS/MS from April to May 2018. It asked about general characteristics of the laboratory and commonly utilized clinical LC-MS/MS tests: newborn screening, tacrolimus test, vitamin D test, and plasma metanephrine test. Frequency analysis and other statistical analyses were performed., Results: A total of 17 laboratories responded. The median number of LC-MS/MS instruments, laboratory medicine physicians, and technicians in each laboratory was three, one, and two, respectively. Nine laboratory directors had >10 years of experience with clinical LC-MS/MS. For each LC-MS/MS test, at least two concentrations of QC materials were measured every 24 hours during clinical testing, and all laboratories used QC acceptability criteria based on their established QC means and SDs. All laboratories participated in an external quality assessment program. However, there was inter-laboratory variability in sample preparation methods, instruments, reagents, internal standards, and calibrators., Conclusions: LC-MS/MS has been successfully introduced in Korean clinical laboratories and is used within a quality framework. The heart continuously and cyclically communicates with the brain. Beyond homeostatic regulation and sensing, recent neuroscience research has started to shed light on brain-heart interactions in diverse cognitive and emotional processes. In particular, neural responses to heartbeats, as measured with the so-called heartbeat-evoked potential, have been shown to be useful for investigating cortical activity processing cardiac signals. In this review, we first overview and discuss the basic properties of the HEP such as underlying physiological pathways, brain regions, and neural mechanisms. We then provide a systematic review of the mental processes associated with cortical HEP activations, notably heartbeat perception, emotional feelings, perceptual awareness, and self-consciousness, in healthy subjects and clinical populations. Finally, we discuss methodological issues regarding the experimental design and data analysis for separating genuine HEP components from physiological artifacts (e.g., cardiac field artifact, pulse artifact) or other neural activities that are not specifically associated with the heartbeat. Findings from this review suggest that when intrinsic limitations (e.g., artifacts) are carefully controlled, the HEP could provide a reliable neural measure for investigating brain-viscera interactions in diverse mental processes., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Background and Objectives: There are limited published data on the incidence and cost associated with cardiac implantable electrical device (CIED) infection for Asian patients. We analyzed the infection burden associated with the implantation of CIEDs in Korea., Methods: In the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service (HIRA) database during the period from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016, we identified 16,908 patients with CIED implantation. CIED infection was defined as either: 1) Infection-related diagnosis code by the Korean Standard Classification of Diseases after any CIED procedure; or 2) CIED removal along with systemic infection., Results: The proportions of first implantation and replacement were 77.6% and 22.4%, respectively. During the follow-up period of 17.1±10.6 months, a total of 462 patients had CIED infection with incidence of 1.95 per 100 person-years with higher infection rate in replacement than first implantation (3.97 vs. 1.4 per 100 person-years, p<0.001). The average cost per person was US$ 16,584 (pacemaker, $13,736; implantable cardioverter defibrillator, $28,402; cardiac resynchronization therapy, $29,674). The risk factors of CIED infection were generator replacement (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 3.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.60-3.78), diabetes mellitus (aHR, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.58-2.38), and congestive heart failure (aHR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.51-2.28)., Conclusions: The rate of CIED infection in Korea was 1.95 per 100 person-years with average cost of US$ 16,584. The most important risk factor was generator replacement. Background: Protein induced by vitamin K antagonist-II (PIVKA-II), in addition to alpha-fetoprotein, is a useful tumor marker for diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We evaluated the analytical performance of the HISCL-5000 analyzer (Sysmex Corporation) in the measurement of serum PIVKA-II., Methods: We evaluated the precision and linearity of PIVKA-II assays using the HISCL-5000 analyzer. Methods using HISCL-5000, LUMIPULSE G1200 (Fujirebio Diagnostics), and ARCHITECT i2000 (Abbott Diagnostics) were compared according to the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. A total of 501 subjects (median age 59 years, age range 24-90 years) were enrolled. Among them, 335 were HCC patients, 46 were patients with non-HCC liver disease, and 120 were healthy individuals. Non-HCC liver disease included liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, HBV or HCV carrier, hepatic adenoma, and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma., Results: Repeatability (%CV) in low- and high-level controls and pooled serum was 2.81%-10.30%, and within-laboratory precision was 4.24%-8.86%. In a linearity test, the coefficient of determination (R 2 ) was 0.9957, ranging from 11 to 69 897 mAU/mL. In comparison, the coefficient of correlation (r) was 0.9561-0.9644, agreement was 93.4%-97.6%, and the κ value was 0.855-0.945 among the three analyzers. About 99.2% of healthy individuals and 84.8% of non-HCC liver disease patients were below the cutoff value (40 mAU/mL) on HISCL-5000., Conclusions: A PIVKA-II assay using HISCL-5000 showed acceptable analytical performance including precision, linearity, and method comparison. Numerous studies on poly γ-d-glutamicacid (γ-PGA) production have investigated terrestrial renewable sources for reducing production costs, but there are no studies using waste marine resources so far. We aimed to develop a cost-effective production method of γ-d-PGA by Bacillus sp. SJ-10 using green macroalgae (Ulva sp.) as a major substrate without hydrolysis pretreatment. The SJ-10 was shown to not only cause immediate tissue degradation of the Ulva membrane but also grew well as a sole substrate. The γ-d-PGA yield was 6.29 ± 0.34 g/L under optimized conditions via the response surface method, and the produced γ-d-PGA had a thermal decomposition temperature of 310°C and molecular weight of 250-1780 kDa. The calculated cost efficiency for the final yield was 32% when compared with complex media. Therefore, the present study provided a strategy for promoting an ecofriendly and cost-effective means to produce γ-d-PGA via a marine renewable resource., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The antimicrobial properties of graphene-based membranes such as single-layer graphene oxide (GO) and modified graphene oxide (rGO) on top of cellulose ester membrane are reported in this study. rGO membranes are made from GO by hydriodic acid (HI) vapor treatment. The antibacterial properties are tested after 3 h contact time with selected model bacteria. Complete bacterial cell inactivation is found only after contact with rGO membranes, while no significant bacterial inactivation is found for the control i) GO membrane, ii) the mixed cellulose ester support, and the iii) rGO membrane after additional washing that removes the remaining HI. This indicates that the antimicrobial effect is neither caused by the graphene nor the membrane support. The antimicrobial effect is found to be conclusively linked to the HI eliminating microbial growth, at concentrations from 0.005%. We examined the effects of light conditions on plant growth and production of defense compounds in the toxic species Datura inoxia and D. stramonium. Specifically, we investigated morphological and physiological traits, including the contents of nitrogen-based tropane alkaloids (atropine and scopolamine) as defense compounds, under three light conditions: 100%, 80%, and 50% of full sunlight. Both species showed similar morphological and physiological responses to exposure to different intensities of light. Although the total plant mass decreased under lower light conditions, the total leaf area per plant increased. The reason being that the leaf mass per plant did not decrease, while the leaf mass per unit area decreased. Leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll concentrations and the chlorophyll/nitrogen ratio increased under lower light conditions, whereas the chlorophyll a/b ratio decreased. These morphological and physiological changes may be seen as ways to increase light acquisition under low light conditions. Leaf atropine and scopolamine concentrations did not differ among the three light conditions for both species. In conclusion, both Datura species underwent morphological and physiological changes under low light conditions, enabling them to use carbon and nitrogen to increase light acquisition while maintaining their chemical defense capability.

Background: Many studies have evaluated the usefulness of creatinine- (eGFRcr) and cystatin C-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFRcys) at specific time points in predicting renal outcome. This study compared the performance of both eGFR changing slopes in identifying patients at high risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD)., Methods: From 2012 to 2017, patients with more than three simultaneous measurements of serum creatinine and cystatin C for 1 year were identified. Rapid progression was defined as eGFR slope < - 5 mL/min/1.73 m 2 /year. The primary outcome was progression to ESRD., Results: Overall, 1323 patients were included. The baseline eGFRcr and eGFRcys were 39 (27-48) and 38 (27-50) mL/min/1.73 m 2 , respectively. Over 2.9 years (range, 2.0-3.8 years) of follow-up, 134 subjects (10%) progressed to ESRD. Both the eGFRcr and eGFRcys slopes were associated with a higher risk of ESRD, independently of baseline eGFR (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.986 [0.982-0.991] and HR = 0.988 [0.983-0.993], respectively; all p <  0.001). The creatinine- and cystatin C-based rapid progressions were associated with increased risk of ESRD (HR = 2.22 [1.57-3.13], HR = 2.03 [1.44-2.86], respectively; all p <  0.001). In the subgroup analyses, the rapid progression group, defined on the basis of creatinine levels (n = 503), showed no association between the eGFRcys slope and ESRD risk (p = 0.31), whereas the eGFRcr slope contributed to further discriminating higher ESRD risk in the subjects with rapid progression based on eGFRcys slopes (n = 463; p = 0.003)., Conclusions: Both eGFR slopes were associated with future ESRD risk. The eGFRcr slope was comparable with the eGFRcys slope in predicting kidney outcome.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship among dynamic membrane (DM) formation, metabolic flux, and microbial community population in dark fermentative hydrogen production. A continuously stirred tank reactor was equipped with an external submerged polyester screen mesh and inoculated with heat-treated anaerobic sludge without immobilization. DM was successfully developed on the polyester mesh and provided high-rate hydrogen production at 60.5 L H 2 /L.d and 2.39 mol H 2 /mol glucose added . DM formation was along with tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances. Flux balance analysis revealed that formation of DM altered the metabolic pathways for acetic acid production from homoacetogenesis to hydrogenesis. Bacterial community analysis suggested that Sporolactobacillaceae would contributed to this metabolic pathway shift. The immunomodulatory effects of Monascus-fermented Saccharina japonica extract on anti- and pro-inflammatory cytokines gene expression of THP-1 cells were evaluated. Extracts of fermented samples showed higher phenolic, flavonoid, protein, and reducing sugar contents than unfermented one. Fermented samples were rich in many bioactive compounds determined by GC-MS analyses and showed cell viability greater than 85% in MTS assay. Regarding the anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory activities of the different samples, Q-PCR analyses revealed that IL-10 gene expression in THP-1 cells was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in cells treated with the SjMp or SjMk sample than those treated with the unfermented sample. Cells treated with the SjMp extract or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher relative gene expression of IL-4 cytokine than cells treated with SjMk or SjU extracts. The relative gene expression of IFN-α was higher in cells treated with SjMp followed by LPS, SjMk, and SjU. TGF-β expression was higher in LPS-stimulated cells followed by SjMk and other samples. Cells treated with SjMp exhibited significantly higher pro-inflammatory (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and NF-κB) cytokine gene expression than cells treated with SjU. These results revealed that extracts from S. japonica fermented with Monascus spp. regulate cytokine gene expression. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Purpose: Pompe disease (PD) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of acid alphaglucosidase resulting from pathogenic GAA variants. This study describes the clinical features, genotypes, changes before and after enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), and long-term outcomes in patients with infantile-onset PD (IOPD) and late-onset PD (LOPD) at a tertiary medical center., Methods: The medical records of 5 Korean patients (2 male, 3 female patients) diagnosed with PD between 2002 and 2013 at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea were retrospectively reviewed for data, including clinical and genetic characteristics at diagnosis and clinical course after ERT., Results: Common initial symptoms included hypotonia, cyanosis, and tachycardia in patients with IOPD and limb girdle weakness in patients with LOPD. Electrocardiography at diagnosis revealed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in all patients with IOPD who showed a stable disease course during a median follow-up period of 10 years. Patients with LOPD showed improved hepatomegaly and liver transaminase level after ERT., Conclusion: As ERT is effective for treatment of PD, early identification of this disease is very important. Thus, patients with IOPD should be considered candidates for clinical trials of new drugs in the future.

In this work, the effects of granular activated carbon (GAC) supplementation on hydrogen fermentation were investigated in Clostridium butyricum. Maximum hydrogen production rate and ultimate hydrogen volume increased up to 1.7 and 1.9 fold, respectively, with 1 g/L GAC supplementation. Indicators of stable hydrogen production, such as acetate and butyrate formation increased with increasing GAC concentration. To identify the factors for hydrogen production enhancement, transcriptome analysis was conducted. Functional genes related to hydrogen production increased by GAC supplementation (1.75 fold for pfor and 1.48 fold for oxct). On the other hand, functional genes related to hydrogen consumption decreased (1.78 fold for ldh, 0.67 fold for adh, 1.64 fold for hbd, 2.4 fold for crt, and 0.71 fold for buk). Background: Type II diabetes mellitus causes many complications, and its prevalence continues to increase in Korea. Accurate measurement of glycated Hb (HbA1c) is important because of its usefulness in diagnosis, follow-up, and prediction of prognosis. We tested the analytical performance of the HLC-723 G11 Variant Mode (G11vr; Tosoh Bioscience, Inc., Tokyo, Japan), recently introduced to Korea, in detecting HbA1c., Methods: We evaluated precision, linearity, carry-over, and turnaround time. Using 208 samples, including 108 flagged samples, we compared HbA1c concentrations from four analyzers through correlation analysis: G11vr, HLC-723 G8 Variant Mode (G8vr, Tosoh Bioscience), HLC-723 G11 Standard Mode (G11st, Tosoh Bioscience), and HLC-723 G8 Standard Mode (G8st, Tosoh Bioscience). We used HPLC mass spectrometry (MS) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) to confirm the HbA1c concentrations of 15 additional known Hb variant samples., Results: Repeatability (% CV) in measuring low- and high-concentration controls was 0.57% and 0.35%, respectively; within-laboratory precision was 0.86% and 0.69%, respectively. In a linearity test, the coefficient of determination was 0.9999 (measurement range: 3.64% to 18.59%) for HbA1c. The correlations between G11vr and other analyzers were weaker for flagged samples than for non-flagged samples. The carry-over effect was less than 0.4%. Turnaround time for a single sample was lower in G11vr (one minute) than in G8vr (1.6 minutes). Singlet oxygen produced by irradiating photosensitizers (PSs) can be used to kill pathogens during water treatment. Chemical immobilization of the PSs on surfaces can maintain their disinfection function long-term. In this study, two model PSs (rose bengal (RB) and hematoporphyrin (HP)) were immobilized on a glass surface using a silane coupling agent with an epoxide group, and their antibacterial properties were analyzed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that a covalent bond formed between the epoxide group and hydroxyl group in the PSs. A large proportion of the immobilized PSs (approximately 50%) was active in singlet oxygen production, which was evidenced by a comparative analysis with free PSs. RB was more effective at producing singlet oxygen than HP. The immobilized PSs were durable in terms of repeated use. On the other hand, singlet oxygen produced by the PSs was effective at killing bacteria, mostly for Gram-positive bacteria (> 90% death for 2 h of irradiation), by damaging the cell membrane. The preferable antibacterial property against Gram-positive bacteria compared with that against Gram-negative bacteria suggested efficient penetrability of singlet oxygen across the cell membrane, which led to cell death. Taken together, it was concluded that immobilization of PSs on surfaces using the silane coupling agent proposed in this study was effective at killing Gram-positive bacteria by forming singlet oxygen., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung diseases are an emerging cause of pulmonary infection, becoming more common in the clinical setting as incidence of NTM lung diseases steadily increases worldwide. Trace elements are essential micronutrients and are known to play many important roles in infectious diseases. We investigated the concentrations of trace elements in patients with NTM lung disease and compared these values to patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and healthy controls. A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the serum trace element concentrations in 95 patients with NTM lung disease, 97 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, and 99 healthy control subjects. The serum concentrations of 7 trace elements (cobalt, copper, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc) were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We also analyzed demographic data, clinical outcomes, and other biochemical parameters. The median serum concentrations of copper and molybdenum were higher in patients with NTM lung disease (109 vs. 91 μg/dL, p < 0.001 and 1.70 vs. 0.96 μg/L, p < 0.001). In contrast, the median serum concentrations of selenium and zinc were significantly lower in patients with NTM lung disease than in healthy controls (105 vs. 115 μg/L, p < 0.001 and 94 vs. 102 μg/dL, p < 0.001). Compared to patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, the serum concentrations of molybdenum and zinc were higher in patients with NTM lung disease, while cobalt and copper concentrations were lower (p < 0.001). Correlations among trace element concentrations were observed (copper and zinc, r = -0.367; cobalt and molybdenum, r = -0.360; selenium and zinc, r = 0.335; and manganese and zinc, r = 0.327, respectively). None of the 7 trace elements were associated with treatment outcomes. Patients with NTM lung disease showed different serum trace element concentrations. Our study indicates that altered trace element status is associated with mycobacterial disease. Background: Screening for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) using immunoassays for 17α-hydroxyprogesterone generates many false-positive results. We developed and validated a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assay for simultaneous quantification of nine steroid hormones in dried blood spot (DBS) samples, and established reference intervals for these hormones., Methods: We examined our method for linearity, precision, accuracy, extraction recovery, and matrix effects and determined the reference intervals of cortisol, 17α-hydroxyproges-terone, 11-deoxycortisol, 21-deoxycortisol, androstenedione, corticosterone, 11-deoxycorticosterone, testosterone, and progesterone in 1,146 DBS samples (from 272 preterm and 874 full-term neonates). Immunoassay and LC-MS/MS methods were compared for 17α-hydroxyprogesterone. Fourteen additional samples were tested to validate the clinical applicability of the LC-MS/MS method., Results: The linearity range was 2.8-828.0 nmol/L for cortisol and 0.9-40.0 nmol/L for the other steroids (R²>0.99). Intra-day and inter-day precision CVs were 2.52-12.26% and 3.53-17.12%, respectively. Accuracy was 80.81-99.94%, and extraction recovery and matrix effects were 88.0-125.4% and 61.7-74.2%, respectively. There was a negative bias, with higher values measured by immunoassay compared with LC-MS/MS ( r =0.8104, P <0.0001). The LC-MS/MS method was successfully applied to the analysis of nine steroids in DBS for screening and diagnosis of CAH using the 14 additional samples., Conclusions: Our method enables highly sensitive and specific assessment of nine steroids from DBS and is a promising tool for clinical analysis of CAH., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (© The Korean Society for Laboratory Medicine.)

Although recent studies on self-consciousness emphasized the importance of bodily processing and multisensory integration, such research has focused solely on bodily signals originating from the outside of the body (i.e., exteroceptive bodily signals) or internal bodily signals from visceral organs (i.e., interoceptive bodily signals) and how each system contributes to self-consciousness, without much interaction between the two approaches. Reviewing the latest evidence on interoceptive bodily processing and the combination of exteroceptive and interoceptive bodily signals for self-consciousness, we propose an integrated neural system reconciling these two largely separated views and delineate how it accounts for fundamental aspects of self-consciousness such as self-identification and self-location, as well as its experienced global unity and temporal continuity., (Copyright © 2019. Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used for treatment of severe Gram-positive bacterial infection. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of teicoplanin and to review our clinical experience. We established an LC-MS/MS method to analyze serum concentration of teicoplanin using simple protein precipitation with a 5 min run time for each sample. The linearity, lower limit of quantitation, detection accuracy, precision, carryover, matrix effect, and extraction recovery were evaluated. From September 2014 to June 2017, a total of 421 serum teicoplanin concentrations was measured in 223 patients. We collected demographic and clinical data, medication history, and laboratory findings through retrospective review of medical records. The LC-MS/MS method was linear for serum teicoplanin concentrations in the range of 12.0-89.0 μg/mL. The intra- and inter-assay precisions were below CV 7.5%. The accuracy was less than ±10% bias. The lower limit of quantification was 0.2 μg/mL. The extraction recovery ranged from 88.8% to 96.6%. Of 421 measurements, 87 (20.7%) were subtherapeutic (< 10 μg/mL), and four (0.9%) were above the toxic threshold (≥ 60 μg/mL). Serum teicoplanin concentration was measured once in 140 patients (63%), and multiple measurements were completed for the others (83 patients, 37%). Intra-patient variability in teicoplanin concentration was found (CV 33%, range 2-94%). Our simple and rapid LC-MS/MS method was successfully applied in TDM of teicoplanin in clinical practice. Objective: To investigate duration of the treatment effect of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on spasticity levels measured with Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) regardless of the patient group (stroke, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy) and evaluate its spasticity-reducing effect depending on the number of shocks and site of application., Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Scopus were searched from database inception to February 2018. Randomized controlled trials and cross-over trials were included. All participants had spasticity regardless of cause. ESWT was the main intervention and MAS score was the primary outcome. Among 122 screened articles, 9 trials met the inclusion criteria., Results: The estimate of effect size showed statistically significant MAS grade reduction immediately after treatment (standardized mean difference [SMD]=-0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], -1.00 to -0.13; p=0.012), 1 week after (SMD=-1.81; 95% CI, -3.07 to -0.55; p=0.005), 4 weeks after (SMD=-2.35; 95% CI, -3.66 to -1.05; p<0.001), and 12 weeks after (SMD=-1.07; 95% CI, -2.04 to -0.10; p=0.03). Meta-regression and subgroup analysis were performed for the 'immediately after ESWT application' group. The prediction equation obtained from metaregression was -1.0824+0.0002* (number of shocks), which was not statistically significant. Difference in MAS grade reduction depending on site of application was not statistically significant either in subgroup analysis (knee and ankle joints vs. elbow, wrist, and finger joints)., Conclusion: ESWT effectively reduced spasticity levels measured with MAS regardless of patient group. Its effect maintained for 12 weeks. The number of shocks or site of application had no significant influence on the therapeutic effect of ESWT in reducing spasticity. Ongoing trials with ESWT are needed to address optimal parameters of shock wave to reduce spasticity regarding intensity, frequency, and numbers.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global health problem that is associated with various metabolic disorders. Telmisartan is a potential treatment for NAFLD due to its ability to improve insulin sensitivity and decrease hepatic fat accumulation via modulation of PPARγ, and to suppress hepatic fibrosis by blocking angiotensin II receptors. However, the underlying mechanisms of action of telmisartan have yet to be fully elucidated. In the present study, diabetic nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) mice (STAM mice) received daily administrations of telmisartan for 6 weeks to assess the improvements in NASH. Hepatic transcriptome analyses revealed that the amelioration of NASH likely occurred through the regulation of inflammatory- and fibrosis-related gene responses. An integrated network analysis including transcriptional and non-transcriptional genes regulated by telmisartan showed that the NAFLD pathway is interconnected with the dysregulated RAS-PPAR-NFκB pathways. The downstream targets of PPARα, PPARδ, and RELA in this network significantly overlapped with telmisartan-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs), which were verified in palmitate-treated Hepa1c1c7 cell line. This transcriptome approach accompanied with cell-based molecular analyses provided the opportunity to understand the fundamental molecular mechanisms underpinning the therapeutic effects of telmisartan, and will contribute to the establishment of a novel pharmacological treatment for NASH patients.

As microbiological diagnostic techniques improve and the frequency of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) infection increases worldwide, NTM-PD is becoming increasingly important to clinicians and researchers. Vitamin activity has been associated with the host immune response in tuberculosis; however, such information is very limited in NTM-PD. We performed a case-control study in 150 patients with NTM-PD and 150 healthy controls to investigate serum vitamin status. We measured concentrations of vitamins A, D, and E along with homocysteine and methylmalonic acid (MMA) as indicators of vitamin B 12 deficiency, using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry. The serum concentrations of vitamins A and E were significantly lower in patients with NTM-PD than in healthy controls (1.5 vs. 2.1 µmol/L, p < 0.01 for vitamin A; and 27.3 vs. 33.1 µmol/L, p < 0.01 for vitamin E). In contrast, the serum concentrations of vitamin D and homocysteine were not significantly different between the two groups. Vitamin A deficiency (< 1.05 µmol/L) was significantly more prevalent in patients with NTM-PD than in healthy controls ( p < 0.01) and was associated with an 11-fold increase in risk of NTM-PD. Multiple vitamin deficiencies were only observed in patients with NTM-PD (7.3% of all NTM-PD patients). Positive correlations were observed among vitamins (vitamins A and D; r = 0.200, p < 0.05; vitamins D and E, r = 0.238, p < 0.05; vitamins A and E, r = 0.352, p < 0.05). Serum vitamin status, demographic variables, and biochemical indicators were not associated with treatment outcomes. Vitamin A deficiency was strongly associated with patients with NTM-PD. Our study suggests that altered vitamin status is associated with mycobacterial disease. Future well-designed prospective studies with large patient cohorts addressing these issues are needed to clarify the significance of vitamins in NTM-PD.

A total of 512 yeasts, including 422 non-Saccharomyces yeasts, were isolated from various fruits including apple, aronia, Muscat Bailey A grapes, and persimmon. These were used to prepare persimmon wine and apple cider starters that produced high levels of aromatic compounds, which contribute to high-quality fermented products. Environmental tolerance testing with 20% glucose and 8% EtOH, alongside a sniffing test, led to the selection of Wickerhamomyces anomalus (Synonym Pichia anomala) SJ20, Meyerozyma caribbica (Synonym Pichia caribbica) YP1, Pichia kluyveri CD34, Hanseniaspora uvarum SJ69 (for persimmon wine), W. anomalus CS7-16 (for apple cider), and Starmerella bacillaris (Synonym Candida zemplinina) CD80 (for both wines) as wine starters. These strains had high environmental stress tolerance and the highest sniffing test scores. Persimmon wine and apple cider were fermented using these strains in single- or mixed-culture with S. cerevisiae W-3 to determine the improved effect on wine aroma. In accordance with the results of volatile ester compounds and sensory evaluation, W. anomalus SJ20, H. uvarum SJ69, and W. anomalus CS7-16 had an excellent potential as persimmon wine and apple cider starters. Moreover, other strains also showed a good potential for a distinctive persimmon wine and apple cider because of the different compositions of the various volatile ester compounds. Six types of sugars (fructose, glucose, maltose, sucrose, raffinose, sucrose, and trehalose), four types of rehydration solutions (distilled water, 1× phosphate buffered saline, 0.85% NaCl, and 1% peptone water), and two types of antioxidants (l-ascorbic acid and glutathione) were examined to improve the survival rate of air-blast dried non-Saccharomyces yeast cells. Optimal sugar and rehydration conditions for each strain were validated, and scanning electron microscopy showed that each cell was surrounded by protectants, including sugar, skim milk, and lactomil. Storability assessment of air-blast dried yeast cells maintained at 4 °C for two months indicated that at least one condition in each strain had a higher survival rate than the control, regardless of the concentration or type of antioxidant treatment, except for M. caribbica YP1. The somatic marker hypothesis proposes that the cortical representation of visceral signals is a crucial component of emotional processing. No previous study has investigated the information flow among brain regions that process visceral information during emotional perception. In this magnetoencephalography study of 32 healthy subjects of either sex, heartbeat-evoked responses (HERs), which reflect the cortical processing of heartbeats, were modulated by the perception of a sad face. The modulation effect was localized to the prefrontal cortices, the globus pallidus, and an interoceptive network including the right anterior insula (RAI) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (RdACC). Importantly, our Granger causality analysis provides the first evidence for the increased flow of heartbeat information from the RAI to the RdACC during sad face perception. Moreover, using a surrogate R-peak analysis, we have shown that this HER modulation effect was time-locked to heartbeats. These findings advance the understanding of brain-body interactions during emotional processing.

Nightmares are characterized by the experience of strong negative emotions occurring mainly during REM sleep. Some people suffer from nightmare disorder, which is defined by the repeated occurrence of nightmares and by significant distress in wakefulness. Yet, whether frequent nightmares relate to a general increase in emotional reactivity or arousal during sleep remains unclear. To address this question, we recorded heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEPs) during wakefulness, NREM and REM sleep in patients with nightmare disorder and healthy participants. The HEP represents a cortical (EEG) response to the heartbeat and indexes brain-body interactions, such as interoceptive processing and intrinsic levels of arousal. HEP amplitude is typically increased during states of high emotional arousal and motivation, and is decreased in depression. Here we compared the amplitude of HEPs between nightmare patients and healthy controls separately during AWAKE, NREM, REM periods, and found higher HEP amplitude in nightmare patients compared to healthy controls over a cluster of frontal regions only during REM sleep. This effect was not paralleled by any group difference in cardiac control measures (e.g. heart rate variability, interbeat interval). These findings corroborate the notion that nightmares are essentially a REM pathology and suggest that increased emotional arousal during REM sleep, as measured by HEP, is a physiological condition responsible for frequent nightmares. Background: Measurement of insulin and C-peptide concentrations is important for deciding whether insulin treatment is required in diabetic patients. We aimed to investigate the analytical performance of insulin and C-peptide assays using the Lumipulse G1200 system (Fujirebio Inc., Tokyo, Japan)., Methods: We examined the precision, linearity, and cross-reactivity of insulin and C-peptide using five insulin analogues and purified proinsulin. A method comparison was conducted between the Lumipulse G1200 and Roche E170 (Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany) systems in 200 diabetic patients on insulin treatment. Reference intervals for insulin and C-peptide concentrations were determined in 279 healthy individuals., Results: For insulin and C-peptide assays, within-laboratory precision (% CV) was 3.78-4.14 and 2.89-3.35%, respectively. The linearity of the insulin assay in the range of 0-2,778 pmol/L was R²=0.9997, and that of the C-peptide assay in the range of 0-10 nmol/L was R²=0.9996. The correlation coefficient (r) between the Roche E170 and Lumipulse G1200 results was 0.943 (P<0.001) for insulin and 0.996 (P<0.001) for C-peptide. The mean differences in insulin and C-peptide between Lumipulse G1200 and the Roche E170 were 19.4 pmol/L and 0.2 nmol/L, respectively. None of the insulin analogues or proinsulin showed significant cross-reactivity with the Lumipulse G1200. Mucolipidosis III alpha/beta (ML III alpha/beta) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphotransferase (GlcNAc-phosphotransferase) deficiency. It is characterized by coarse facial features, developmental delay, short stature, and skeletal deformities. Its cardiovascular symptoms include valvular thickening or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A 32-year-old female patient received heart transplantation due to end-stage heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). We performed whole exome sequencing to determine the etiology of DCM and/or skeletal deformities. The test revealed c.2715+1G>A and c.3173C>G mutations in the GNPTAB gene encoding the alpha and beta subunits of GlcNAc-phosphotransferase. Finally, she was diagnosed with ML III alpha/beta. This report describes a rare case of ML III alpha/beta associated with DCM. Our findings expand the clinical spectrum of ML III alpha/beta., (© 2018 by the Association of Clinical Scientists, Inc.)

Biofilm formation influences the most energy-demanding process in the waste water treatment cycle. Biofilm growth on the surface of wastewater aeration diffusers in water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) can increase the energy requirements up to 50% in less than 2 years. The impact of biofilms in aeration diffusers was quantified and assessed for first time using molecular tools (i.e., Energy-dispersive X-ray, Ra and RMS and Pyrosequencing) and state-of-the-art techniques (i.e., EPS quantification, Hydrophobicity and DNA quantification). To provide a better understanding and quantitative connections between biological activity and aeration energy efficiency, two replicates of the most common diffusers were installed and tested in two different operational conditions (higher and lower organic loading rate processes) during 15 months. Different scenarios and conditions provided for first time comprehensive understanding of the major factors contributing to diffuser fouling. The array of analysis suggested that higher loading conditions can promote specialized microbial populations to halve aeration efficiency parameters (i.e., αF) in comparison to lower loading conditions. Biofilms adapted to certain operational conditions can trigger changes in diffuser membrane properties (i.e., biological enhanced roughness and hydrophobicity) and enhance EPS growth rates. IgG consists of four subclasses: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4. Changes in the serum concentration of each subclass reflect different clinical situations, and quantification of each subclass is important to assess patients' clinical states. Herein, we evaluated the analytical performance of the SPAPLUS turbidimetric analyzer (The Binding Site, Birmingham, UK) for IgG subclass. Precision, linearity, comparison with the BNII system (Siemens Healthineers, Erlangen, Germany), and reference interval were assessed according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. The repeatability and within-laboratory precision were within 5% for all IgG subclasses. The coefficient of determination (R 2 ) was higher than 0.99 for the analytical measurement range in all IgG subclasses. Comparison between SPAPLUS and BNII revealed significant differences in IgG1, IgG3, and IgG4 (p < .0001). IgG1 and IgG4 values were lower in SPAPLUS than BNII. On the other hand, IgG3 values were higher in SPAPLUS than BNII. The SPAPLUS turbidimetric analyzer exhibited good analytical performance for quantification of four IgG subclasses. Because of the differences between SPAPLUS and BNII, follow-up test for disease monitoring should be performed with same instrument.

Pseudomonas sp. FB15 producing phytase with a high activity at low temperature was isolated from foreshore soil. The phytase gene was cloned and sequenced. Molecular modeling predictions using its amino acid sequence indicated that it belongs to the group of beta-propeller phytases (BPPs). However, it differs from the conventional structure of BPPs in the number of propeller-shaped domains. Most BPPs have a propeller with six blades that consist of four or five beta-sheets. However, the BPP from the isolated strain contained a C-terminal domain containing a conserved BPP sequence and also an N-terminal domain consisting of an additional 275 amino acids. The characterization of recombinant BPP from Pseudomonas sp. FB15 (PSphy) revealed the highest activity to be at pH 6 and 40 °C. Additionally, it showed that more than 80% of optimal activity was retained at a relatively low temperature of 25 °C. In addition, CaCl 2 was required for activity, and the optimal concentration of CaCl 2 was 4 mM. The activity at low temperature was reduced in a recombinant protein from which the N-terminal domain was removed, as was catalytic efficiency. Sphingosinicella microcystinivorans strain B-9 has the ability to degrade cyanobacterial hepatotoxic cyclic peptides, microcystins, and nodularins. This is the first report of the complete genome sequence of the microcystin-degrading bacterium.

Interactions with the environment happen within one's peripersonal space (PPS)-the space surrounding the body. Studies in monkeys and humans have highlighted a multisensory distributed cortical network representing the PPS. However, knowledge about the temporal dynamics of PPS processing around the trunk is lacking. Here, we recorded intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) in humans while administering tactile stimulation (T), approaching auditory stimuli (A), and the 2 combined (AT). To map PPS, tactile stimulation was delivered when the sound was far, intermediate, or close to the body. The 19% of the electrodes showed AT multisensory integration. Among those, 30% showed a PPS effect, a modulation of the response as a function of the distance between the sound and body. AT multisensory integration and PPS effects had similar spatiotemporal characteristics, with an early response (~50 ms) in the insular cortex, and later responses (~200 ms) in precentral and postcentral gyri. Superior temporal cortex showed a different response pattern with AT multisensory integration at ~100 ms without a PPS effect. These results, represent the first iEEG delineation of PPS processing in humans and show that PPS and multisensory integration happen at similar neural sites and time periods, suggesting that PPS representation is based on a spatial modulation of multisensory integration.

Objective: To determine whether fragment removal on in vitro fertilization (IVF) day 2 improved the subsequent development and pregnancy outcomes of fragmented embryos compared to similar-grade embryos without fragment removal., Methods: This study was a retrospective analysis involving 191 IVF cycles in which all embryos had over 10% fragmentation (grade 3 or 4) on day 2 of the IVF-embryo transfer cycle from March 2015 to December 2017. IVF cycles were divided into the fragment removal group (n=87) and the no fragment removal group (n=104) as a control cohort. Before fragment removal, embryos with fragmentation on day 2 were incubated in Ca 2+ - and Mg 2+ -free biopsy medium under paraffin oil for 30 minutes. Microsurgical fragment removal was performed with later-assisted hatching and a handmade suction micropipette that had an outer diameter of 30 µm., Results: There were no significant differences in the characteristics of the patients between the control and the fragment removal groups. After fragment removal and subsequent in vitro culture for 24 hours, the number of blastomeres (7.1±1.7 vs. 6.9±1.6) was comparable between the transferred embryos in the two groups, but the morphological grade of the embryos in the fragment removal group (1.9±0.7) was significantly higher than that of the control group (3.1±0.5, p <0.01). The clinical pregnancy (43.7%) and implantation rates (25.8%) in the fragment removal group were significantly higher than those in the control group (28.8% and 14.0%, respectively; p <0.05)., Conclusion: Early fragment removal on day 2 significantly improved the subsequent development and pregnancy outcomes of fragmented embryos., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: No potential conflict of interest relevant to this article was reported.

Industrial synthesis of succinic acid relies on hydrocarbon oxidation or biomass fermentation routes that suffer from energy-costly separation processes. Here we demonstrate an alternate route to succinic anhydrides via β-lactone carbonylation by heterogeneous bimetallic ion-pair catalysis in Co(CO) 4 - -incorporated Cr-MIL-101 (Co(CO) 4 ⊂Cr-MIL-101, Cr-MIL-101 = Cr 3 O(BDC) 3 F, H 2 BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid). Postsynthetically introduced Co(CO) 4 - facilitates CO insertion to β-lactone substrates activated by the Lewis acidic Cr(III) centers of the metal-organic framework (MOF), leading to catalytic carbonylation with activity and selectivity profiles that compare favorably to those reported for homogeneous ion-pair catalysts. Moreover, the heterogeneous nature of the MOF catalyst enables continuous production of succinic anhydride through a packed bed reactor, with room temperature β-propiolactone carbonylation activity of 1300 mol Anhydride ·mol Co -1 over 6 h on stream. Simple evaporation of the fully converted product stream yields the desired anhydride as isolated solids, highlighting the unique processing advantages conferred by this first example of heterogeneous β-lactone carbonylation pathway.

This study investigated the kinetic parameters of high-rate continuous performance and biofilm layer formation in a H 2 -producing dynamic membrane bioreactor, composed of a continuously stirred tank reactor along with an external module containing polyester mesh with a pore size of 100 µm. A maximum H 2 production rate of 48.9 L/L-day and hydrogen yield of 2.8 mol/mol glucose added were attained at a hydraulic retention time of 3 h. The maximum specific growth rate and Monod constant were estimated as 14.92 d -1 and 1.02 g COD/L, respectively. During the entire operation without backwashing, the transmembrane pressure remained below 1.7 kPa, while tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances increased as the dynamic membrane was developed. Fluorescent in situ hybridization and quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays revealed that Clostridium butyricum was dominant in all samples; however, the biofilm had a higher proportion of Prevotella spp. than the fermentation liquor., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Recent research has shown that heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEPs), brain activity in response to heartbeats, are a useful neural measure for investigating the functional role of brain-body interactions in cognitive processes including self-consciousness. In 2 experiments, using intracranial electroencephalography (EEG), we investigated (1) the neural sources of HEPs, (2) the underlying mechanisms for HEP generation, and (3) the functional role of HEPs in bodily self-consciousness. In Experiment-1, we found that shortly after the heartbeat onset, phase distributions across single trials were significantly concentrated in 10% of the recording sites, mainly in the insula and the operculum, but also in other regions including the amygdala and fronto-temporal cortex. Such phase concentration was not accompanied by increased spectral power, and did not correlate with spectral power changes, suggesting that a phase resetting, rather than an additive "evoked potential" mechanism, underlies HEP generation. In Experiment-2, we further aimed to anatomically refine previous scalp EEG data that linked HEPs with bodily self-consciousness. We found that HEP modulations in the insula reflected an experimentally induced altered sense of self-identification. Collectively, these results provide novel and solid electrophysiological evidence on the neural sources and underlying mechanisms of HEPs, and their functional role in self-consciousness.

To provide insight into direct interspecies electron transfer via granular activated carbon (GAC), the effect of GAC supplementation on anaerobic digestion was evaluated. Compared to control samples, the GAC supplementation increased the total amount of methane production and its production rate by 31% and 72%, respectively. 16S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed a shift in the archaeal community composition; the Methanosarcina proportion decreased 17%, while the Methanosaeta proportion increased 5.6%. Metagenomic analyses based on shotgun sequencing demonstrated that the abundance of pilA and omcS genes belonging to Geobacter species decreased 69.4% and 29.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the analyses suggested a carbon dioxide reduction pathway rather than an acetate decarboxylation pathway for methane formation. Taken together, these results suggest that GAC improved methane production performance by shifting the microbial community and altering functional genes associated with direct interspecies electron transfer via conductive materials., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Select persulfate activation processes were demonstrated to initiate oxidation not reliant on sulfate radicals, although the underlying mechanism has yet to be identified. This study explored singlet oxygenation and mediated electron transfer as plausible nonradical mechanisms for organic degradation by carbon nanotube (CNT)-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The degradation of furfuryl alcohol (FFA) as a singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) indicator and the kinetic retardation of FFA oxidation in the presence of l-histidine and azide as 1 O 2 quenchers apparently supported a role of 1 O 2 in the CNT/PMS system. However, the 1 O 2 scavenging effect was ascribed to a rapid PMS depletion by l-histidine and azide. A comparison of CNT/PMS and photoexcited Rose Bengal (RB) excluded the possibility of singlet oxygenation during heterogeneous persulfate activation. In contrast to the case of excited RB, solvent exchange (H 2 O to D 2 O) did not enhance FFA degradation by CNT/PMS and the pH- and substrate-dependent reactivity of CNT/PMS did not reflect the selective nature of 1 O 2 . Alternatively, concomitant PMS reduction and trichlorophenol oxidation were achieved when PMS and trichlorophenol were physically separated in two chambers using a conductive vertically aligned CNT membrane. This result suggested that CNT-mediated electron transfer from organics to persulfate was primarily responsible for the nonradical degradative route.

In this study, a quorum-quenching (QQ) bacterium named HEMM-1 was isolated at a membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant. HEMM-1 has diplococcal morphology and 99% sequence identity to Enterococcus species. The HEMM-1 cell-free supernatant (CFS) showed higher QQ activities than the CFS of other QQ bacteria, mostly by degrading N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) with short acyl chains. Instrumental analyses revealed that HEMM-1 CFS degraded AHLs via lactonase activity. Under static, flow, and shear conditions, the HEMM-1 CFS was effective in reducing bacterial and activated-sludge biofilms formed on membrane surfaces. Most methods controlling size and shape of metal nanoparticles are chemical methods, and little work has been done using only plasma methods. Size- and shape-controlled synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) is proposed based on adjusting the gas bubble formation produced between two silver electrodes. The application of a voltage waveform with three different pulse widths during a plasma process in water can generate different gas bubble formations. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of Ag NPs synthesized using three different bubble formations reveal that spherical Ag NPs are synthesized when very tiny bubbles are generated between two electrodes or when only the grounded electrode is enveloped with large gas bubbles, but Ag nanoplates are synthesized when both electrodes are completely enveloped with large gas bubbles.

Why should a scientist whose aim is to unravel the neural mechanisms of perception consider brain-body interactions seriously? Brain-body interactions have traditionally been associated with emotion, effort, or stress, but not with the "cold" processes of perception and attention. Here, we review recent experimental evidence suggesting a different picture: the neural monitoring of bodily state, and in particular the neural monitoring of the heart, affects visual perception. The impact of spontaneous fluctuations of neural responses to heartbeats on visual detection is as large as the impact of explicit manipulations of spatial attention in perceptual tasks. However, we propose that the neural monitoring of visceral inputs plays a specific role in conscious perception, distinct from the role of attention. The neural monitoring of organs such as the heart or the gut would generate a subject-centered reference frame, from which the first-person perspective inherent to conscious perception can develop. Self-perception is scaffolded upon the integration of multisensory cues on the body, the space surrounding the body (i.e., the peri-personal space; PPS), and from within the body. We asked whether reducing information available from external space would change: PPS, interoceptive accuracy, and self-experience. Twenty participants were exposed to 15 min of audio-visual deprivation and performed: (i) a visuo-tactile interaction task measuring their PPS; (ii) a heartbeat perception task measuring interoceptive accuracy; and (iii) a series of questionnaires related to self-perception and mental illness. These tasks were carried out in two conditions: while exposed to a standard sensory environment and under a condition of audio-visual deprivation. Results suggest that while PPS becomes ill defined after audio-visual deprivation, interoceptive accuracy is unaltered at a group-level, with some participants improving and some worsening in interoceptive accuracy. Interestingly, correlational individual differences analyses revealed that changes in PPS after audio-visual deprivation were related to interoceptive accuracy and self-reports of "unusual experiences" on an individual subject basis. Taken together, the findings argue for a relationship between the malleability of PPS, interoceptive accuracy, and an inclination toward aberrant ideation often associated with mental illness., (Copyright © 2018. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a microbial process that produces renewable energy in the form of methane by treating organic waste and high-strength wastewater. Recent studies have demonstrated that conductive materials can promote direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between exoelectrogenic bacteria and methanogenic archaea. DIET via conductive materials is more effective for methane production than interspecies electron transfer using electron carriers such as hydrogen, a principal route of methane production in conventional AD. This critical review presents the current understanding of DIET via conductive materials for methane production, summarizes the relevant studies published to date, and analyzes these studies with regard to conductive materials, substrates, inocula, performance, and microorganisms. We fabricated a boron-doped diamond nanowire (BDDNW) array electrode via soft lithography and metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) of Si to provide a highly promoted effective surface area and increased mass transport during the electrochemical oxidation process. The effects of aligning the BDDNW on the electrochemical oxidation performance and the current efficiency of the electrode in phenol oxidation were examined. Although the effective surface area of the BDDNW array with an aligned nanowire configuration was smaller than that of the BDDNW with a random nanowire configuration, the BDDNW array electrode exhibited a higher mass transfer coefficient, resulting in a better performance in the removal of phenol. The enhanced mass transport exhibited by the BDDNW array electrode also greatly enhanced the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and current efficiency.
