Among the many names violently consigned to oblivion, one cannot omit mentioning the name of Gustav Gustavovich Shpet, a scholar who made a substantial contribution to our country's philosophy, psychology, aesthetics, and linguistics. His rehabilitation in 1956 was not enough to restore his memory in public consciousness, paralyzed by the inertia and fears of the Stalinist years, and the freeze that began soon after, of the sprouts that had just been summoned to life, had its impact in an abrogation of agreements, cessation of publications, and in a number of cases removal of references to the philosopher. And the further thirty years of oblivion that followed were one more period of unjust punishment and a new ordeal in the terrible fate of the scholar and his ideas. His writings, which should have been a new word in science, should have given direction to further investigations, became effectively inaccessible to subsequent generations. References to Shpet in the works of Viach. Vs. Ivanov, Iu. M. Lotman, D. S. Likhachev, A. P. Chudakov, and others, and the article in Philosophical Encyclopedia [Filosofskaia entsiklopediia] written by V. S. Asmus aroused interest in Shpet's writings in Hungary and Germany. In the summer of 1986, an international conference on Shpet was held in Bochum, and his books are being translated. Unfortunately, in his own country the level of research on the philosopher's writings and thoughts is still almost at point zero, but we may hope that interest in Shpet's ideas will grow considerably in connection with the publication of the series From the History of Russian Philosophical Thought [Iz istorii otechestvennoi filosofskoi mysli] and a number of other publications. "The beginning of prose 1936" is written in pencil in large and sweeping letters on a double sheet of art paper folded in the form of a cover. The next page carries an alternative phrase: "Beginning of a novel about Patrik." Inside are seventy-four sheets of yellowed paper. The text had been copied by typewriter and edited by the author. The manuscript was saved by Zinaida Nikolaevna Pasternak, who knew her husband's habit of destroying unused materials and unfinished works. The year 2020 marked 15 years of the Phage Therapy Unit in Poland, the inception of which took place just one year after Poland's accession to the European Union (2004). At first sight, it is hard to find any connection between these two events, but in fact joining the European Union entailed the need to adapt the regulatory provisions concerning experimental treatment in humans to those that were in force in the European Union. These changes were a solid foundation for the first phage therapy center in the European Union to start its activity. As the number of centers conducting phage therapy in Europe and in the world constantly and rapidly grows, we want to grasp the opportunity to take a closer look at the over 15-year operation of our site by analyzing its origins, legal aspects at the local and international levels and the impressive number and diversity of cases that have been investigated and treated during this time. This article is a continuation of our work published in 2020 summarizing a 100-year history of the development of phage research in Poland.

Postoperative delirium is associated with accelerated cognitive decline, mortality, and high health care costs. The importance of perioperative risk identification is increasingly recognized but optimal prevention strategies are still evolving. We review the case of an at-risk 79-year-old who had 3 lumbar spine surgeries within a year, 2 of which were complicated by postoperative delirium and one which was not. We discuss how a comprehensive preoperative cognitive assessment successfully informed perioperative decision making, including anesthetic management and postoperative multimodal delirium prevention strategies by geriatric medicine. Variation in dispersal capacity may influence population genetic variation and relatedness of freshwater animals thus demonstrating how life-history traits influence patterns and processes that in turn influence biodiversity. The majority of studies have focused on the consequences of dispersal variation in taxa inhabiting riverine systems whose dendritic nature and upstream/downstream gradients facilitate characterizing populations along networks. We undertook extensive, large-scale investigations of the impacts of hydrological connectivity on population genetic variation in two freshwater bryozoan species whose dispersive propagules (statoblasts) are either attached to surfaces ( Fredericella sultana ) or are released as buoyant stages ( Cristatella mucedo ) and that live primarily in either lotic ( F. sultana ) or lentic environments ( C. mucedo ). Describing population genetic structure in multiple sites characterized by varying degrees of hydrological connectivity within each of three (or four) UK regions enabled us to test the following hypotheses: (1) genetic diversity and gene flow will be more influenced by hydrological connectivity in populations of C. mucedo (because F. sultana dispersal stages are retained); (2) populations of F. sultana will be characterized by greater genetic divergence than those of C. mucedo (reflecting their relative dispersal capacities); and (3) genetic variation will be greatest in F. sultana (reflecting a propensity for genetic divergence as a result of its low dispersal potential). We found that hydrological connectivity enhanced genetic diversity and gene flow among C. mucedo populations but not in F. sultana while higher overall measures of clonal diversity and greater genetic divergence characterized populations of F. sultana . We suggest that genetic divergence over time within F. sultana populations reflects a general constraint of releasing propagules that might eventually be swept to sea when taxa inhabit running waters. In contrast, taxa that primarily inhabit lakes and ponds may colonize across hydrologically connected regions, establishing genetically related populations. Our study contributes more nuanced views about drivers of population genetic structures in passively dispersing freshwater invertebrates as outlined by the Monopolization Hypothesis ( Acta Oecologica , 23, 2002, 121) by highlighting how a range of demographic and evolutionary processes reflect life-history attributes of benthic colonial invertebrates (bryozoans) and cyclically parthenogenetic zooplankton. In addition, growing evidence that genetic divergence may commonly characterize populations of diverse groups of riverine taxa suggests that organisms inhabiting lotic systems may be particularly challenged by environmental change. Neuropsychological assessment plays a prominent role in the evaluation and care of patients with neurodegenerative diseases throughout the dynamic course of disease. As a biomarker of disease, neuropsychological measurement can distinguish normal from pathologic aging processes. Further, neuropsychological data can help distinguish and classify underlying pathologies in dementing diseases, augmenting imaging and biofluid markers in this area. Neuropsychological data can predict increased or reduced risk for dementia conferred by multiple factors, and describe disease trajectory in affected individuals. Cognitive evaluation can also estimate and address functional outcomes that are most important to patients and their loved ones and that are clinically relevant to diagnostic staging. In informing intervention and patient care needs, areas of cognitive weakness highlight targets for support/intervention, while areas of cognitive strength can be capitalized upon to modify the clinical course of disease. These functions can be accomplished through the complementary use of brief screening tools and comprehensive test batteries. However, for neuropsychological data to serve these functions, it is critical to understand neuropsychological test properties and nondisease factors that can account for variance in test performance. Background: Psychiatric distress (depression and anxiety), sexual dysfunction, sleep disturbances, and pain are frequent comorbidities in multiple sclerosis (MS) that have the potential to interfere with functioning and quality of life. Often, patients benefit from a combination of medical and psychotherapeutic interventions. However, the literature suggests that many of these issues have been underdiagnosed or undertreated. To better understand current practices, this study aimed to gain a multidisciplinary perspective on how MS providers assess and treat these five problems. Methods: An online questionnaire was completed by 42 members of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers on their assessment procedures, treatment recommendations, and prevalence rates of these issues in their practices. Results: More than 80% of participants reported routinely assessing for depression, anxiety, sleep, and pain, but only slightly more than half ask about sexual dysfunction. Most of these health-care providers endorsed using a general question in their assessments and recommending a pharmaceutical intervention. Conclusions: Health-care providers are aware of the prevalence of these issues in their patients with MS. Promoting the use of validated screening measures and increased research on psychotherapeutic interventions for sleep and pain are two potential avenues for improving patient care.

Internally Architectured Materials (IAMs) that exhibit different friction forces for sliding in the opposite directions are proposed. This is achieved by translating deformation normal to the sliding plane into a tangential force in a manner that is akin to a toothbrush with inclined bristles. Friction asymmetry is attained by employing a layered material or a structure with parallel 'ribs' inclined to the direction of sliding. A theory of directionally asymmetric friction is presented, along with prototype IAMs designed, fabricated and tested. The friction anisotropy (the ξ-coefficient) is characterised by the ratio of the friction forces for two opposite directions of sliding. It is further demonstrated that IAM can possess very high levels of friction anisotropy, with ξ of the order of 10. Further increase in ξ is attained by modifying the shape of the ribs to provide them with directionally dependent bending stiffness. Prototype IAMs produced by 3D printing exhibit truly giant friction asymmetry, with ξ in excess of 20. A novel mechanical rectifier, which can convert oscillatory movement into unidirectional movement by virtue of directionally asymmetric friction, is proposed. Possible applications include locomotion in a constrained environment and energy harvesting from oscillatory noise and vibrations.

There is an urgent need to develop a practical and reliable clinical measure of disease progression in early and mild MS. We hypothesized that a test of sound lateralization, which is exquisitely sensitive to transmission delays in auditory brainstem, could be more useful for detecting processing speed deficits in mildly impaired MS subjects than standard cognitive tasks. Objective. To develop a practical test of sound lateralization for the clinic and to compare performance of MS subjects with variable disability and healthy subjects on Sound Lateralization Test (SLT) and two speed-of-processing tasks. Design. 42 healthy controls and 90 subjects with clinically definite MS, divided into no, mild, and moderate disability strata, were administered the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and 3-second Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT). Results. All of the tests showed an overall difference in performance between controls and the three MS groups, but only the SLT measured a significant difference between controls and the no disability group. Conclusion. SLT is rapidly applied, technically simple, and superior to standard processing speed tests for discriminating between healthy controls and nondisabled MS subjects. SLT should be investigated as an outcome measure in early-phase trials and for monitoring early disease progression in the clinic.

1. Differences in spatial and temporal characteristics between polymorphous delta activity (PDA) and "standard slow complexes" (SSCS) resulting from grave cerebral hypoxia have been demonstrated by means of digital correlation analysis and on line recording of correlograms. 2. PDA observed in the human EEG and the ECoG of dogs is characterized by the absence of periodic organization (high extinction indices of auto- and crosscorrelation functions) and absence of spatial synchronization when recorded from widely separated areas of the hemispheres (low correlation coefficients, significant and variable time shifts), with bilateral symmetry of slow waves being preserved. 3. Delta waves recorded from nucleus amygdalae, nucleus caudatus, thalamus, hypothalamus and midbrain in the dog differ from cortical PDA by a more synchronous and rhythmically arranged process. 4. During the establishment of SSC activity correlograms show a synchronous process common to all cortical aand subcortical areas characteized by very high values of correlation coefficients. 5. It is suggested that the unorganized slow wave PDA process could arise under conditions of hypoxic dysfunction of distant cortico-cortical relationships, accompanied by weak subcortical pacemaker influences. The process reflects local coexcitation of relatively limited cortical areas. The particular statistical characteristics of SSCs generated during further increase in oxygen deficit can be accounted for by simultaneous generation of responses in some subcortical areas to single volleys of impulses from a hypothetical pacemaker, accompanied by a passive wave propagation towards a cortex completetly depressed by hypoxia

Synthesis of various RNA species was studied in liver, spleen, and kidney tissues of one year old Wistar rat males within 6, 12, 24 and 48 hrs after peritonitis development. RNA biosynthesis was found to be unaltered in kidney; in liver tissue it was distinctly decreased beginning from 24 hrs and lowered down to 40% of the control value within 2 days. In spleen an increase in synthesis of pro-mRNA (90%) and mRNA was observed at early steps of peritonitis, with the subsequent decrease of these patterns within 24-48 hrs as compared with the previous periods of the disease as well as with controls. The most pronounced inhibition of RNA synthesis (pro-mRNA, mRNA) coincided in time with death of the animals.

The authors examined 134 patients after different methods of surgical treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcer. Examination included determination of blood erythrocytes and hemoglobin, serum plasma, changes of body weight, coprology, ECG and EEG. Normalization of above values was earlier in patients after selective proximal vagotomy. These data should be considered in the postoperative and outpatient treatment.

The autocorrelation funtion of the electrocardiographic signal in the V1 lead is approximated by the formula of an attenuated consinusoid. Parameters are singled out (median period, attenuation factor) to characterize the atrial activity. A procedure for recording the auto correlation function is described and optimal conditions of its registration are studied. First results following clinical application of the method are reported.
