Abstract

Ventures are often hesitant to accept corporate venture capital due to concerns of intellectual property misappropriation. This is likely to be especially true with startup stage ventures operating in weak intellectual property rights regimes. Drawing on transaction costs economics and game theory, we examine how corporate investors might alleviate concerns of misappropriation by establishing credible commitments to their corporate venture capital program, which discourages opportunistic behavior. We submit that corporate investors can demonstrate credible commitments through prior investment quantity and prior investment continuity, therefore increasing the chances of forming a corporate venture capital–venture investment relationship. Our findings—using data from 11,136 ventures, 300 corporate venture capital investors, and 1782 investments across 18 years—demonstrate that ventures are more likely to pair with corporate venture capital investors that have made a credible commitment to their corporate venture capital program. Also, we find evidence that both quantity and continuity possess an enhanced effect on alleviating fears of misappropriation when a startup venture operates in the same industry as a potential corporate venture capital partner; this is because the corporate venture capital investor possesses both the absorptive capacity to understand the venture's intellectual property and complementary capabilities to beat them to market. Abstract

A 1D hybrid simulation model incorporating one of the Zakharov equations for the high-frequency waves and a particle-in-cell simulation of the ions is described and applied to ionospheric heating using realistic parameters. Results from the hybrid simulation are compared with a Zakharov simulation that incorporates a phenomenological model of ion damping. Both the hybrid and Zakharov simulations predict the formation of solitonlike waves. The early time behavior of the two simulations is different due to the high noise level in the hybrid simulation, but the late time behavior is quite similar.

125. Differences in Ionospheric O+and H+Outflow During Storms With and Without Sawtooth Oscillations

Abstract

Previous simulations have suggested that O+outflow plays a role in driving the sawtooth oscillations. This study investigates the role of O+by identifying the differences in ionospheric outflow between sawtooth and non‐sawtooth storms using 11 years of FAST/Time of flight Energy Angle Mass Spectrograph (TEAMS) ion composition data from 1996 through 2007 during storms driven by coronal mass ejections. We find that the storm's initial phase shows larger O+outflow during non‐sawtooth storms, and the main and recovery phases revealed differences in the location of ionospheric outflow. On the pre‐midnight sector, a larger O+outflow was observed during the main phase of sawtooth storms, while non‐sawtooth storms exhibited stronger O+outflow during the recovery phase. On the dayside, the peak outflow shifts significantly toward dawn during sawtooth storms. This strong dawnside sector outflow during sawtooth storms warrants consideration. A sawtooth event is a convection mode in Earth's magnetosphere, which transports solar wind plasma and energy into the inner magnetosphere and ionosphere. Despite three decades since their discovery, the mechanism behind sawtooth oscillations remains uncertain. One theory suggests that O+outflow induces sawtooth oscillations through an internal feedback mechanism. In line with this theory, some simulations have generated sawtooth oscillations under steady geomagnetic conditions. Furthermore, previous observations indicate that some, but not all, geomagnetic storms exhibit sawtooth oscillations. This study utilizes data from the FAST/TEAMS instrument (1996–2007) and compares O+outflow variations during geomagnetic storms with and without sawtooth oscillations. Findings indicate that during the storms' initial phase, sawtooth storms produce less O+outflow than non‐sawtooth storms. Additionally, non‐sawtooth storms exhibit higher O+outflow in the dayside during the main phase and in the pre‐midnight sector during the recovery phase, challenging the key role of O+outflow in driving the feedback mechanism. However, observing large O+outflow in the dawnside sector of sawtooth events suggests more investigation is needed. Abstract

Ionospheric heating leads to strong Langmuir turbulence including modulational instability, soliton formation, and spatial collapse. The Zakharov model usually used to describe these effects contains a low-frequency ion-acoustic wave equation which cannot be rigorously justified in the ionosphere where the electron and ion temperatures are comparable. In the present work, the low-frequency physics is described by a many-ion computer simulation. While some differences are found, the results for the most part confirm the earlier, much less difficult, Zakharov calculations.

Background Edoxaban, an oral factor Xa inhibitor, is non-inferior for prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation and is associated with less bleeding than well controlled warfarin therapy. Few safety data about edoxaban in patients undergoing electrical cardioversion are available. Methods We did a multicentre, prospective, randomised, open-label, blinded-endpoint evaluation trial in 19 countries with 239 sites comparing edoxaban 60 mg per day with enoxaparin-warfarin in patients undergoing electrical cardioversion of non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Abstract

Clozapine (CLZ), a dibenzodiazepine, is demonstrated as the optimal antipsychotic for patients suffering from treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Like many other drugs, understanding the concentration of CLZ in a patient’s blood is critical for managing the patients’ symptoms, side effects, and overall treatment efficacy. To that end, various electrochemical techniques have been adapted due to their capabilities in concentration-dependent sensing. An open question associated with electrochemical CLZ monitoring is whether drug–protein complexes (i.e., CLZ bound to native blood proteins, such as serum albumin (SA) or alpha-1 acid-glycoprotein (AAG)) contribute to electrochemical redox signals. Here, we investigate CLZ-sensing performance using fundamental electrochemical methods with respect to the impact of protein binding. Specifically, we test the activity of bound and free fractions of a mixture of CLZ and either bovine SA or human AAG. Results suggest that bound complexes do not significantly contribute to the electrochemical signal for mixtures of CLZ with AAG or SA. Moreover, the fraction of CLZ bound to protein is relatively constant at 31% (AAG) and 73% (SA) in isolation with varying concentrations of CLZ. Thus, electrochemical sensing can enable direct monitoring of only the unbound CLZ, previously only accessible via equilibrium dialysis. The methods utilized in this work offer potential as a blueprint in developing electrochemical sensors for application to other redox-active medications with high protein binding more generally. Abstract

31st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2699-2702, The production of Domestic Hot Water (DHW) by hydronic solar thermal collectors was for many years the leading renewable energy technology in the residential sector. However, the installed cost of solar PV has fallen dramatically over the past decade and the generation of electricity by PV systems excess to the needs of the individual household now presents a challenge to the stable operation of the LV distribution network. The utilisation of this excess electricity to provide DHW, combined with the lower investment costs, may now make economic sense for the householder and deliver benefits to the energy system as a whole. As both an energy supplier and a network operator, E.ON has an interest in providing cost-effective energy solutions and optimising the integration of solar PV within the overall energy system. This paper evaluates the opportunity for simultaneously mitigating the negative network impacts of PV and improving the economic performance of residential energy systems. It draws on economic modelling, laboratory and field trials addressing the economic, environmental and practical merits, and remaining challenges of this technology.
