Abstract

This research focuses on the evolving dynamics of the power grid, where traditional synchronous generators are being replaced by non-synchronous power electronic converter (PEC)-interfaced renewable energy sources. The non-linear dynamics must be accurately modeled to ensure the stability of future converter-dominated power systems (CDPS). However, obtaining comprehensive dynamic models becomes more complex and computationally intensive as the system grows. This study proposes a scalable and automated data-driven partitioned modeling framework for CDPS dynamics. The method constructs reduced-ordered dynamic linear transfer function models using input-output measurements from a PEC switching model. Validation experiments were conducted on single-house and multi-house scenarios, demonstrating high accuracy (over 97%) and significant computational speed improvements (6.5 times faster) compared to comprehensive models. This framework and modeling approach offers valuable insights for efficient analysis of power system dynamics, aiding in planning, operation, and dispatch.

Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber. We report searches for new physics appearing through few-keV-scale electron recoils, using the experiment's first exposure of 60 live days and a fiducial mass of 5.5t. The data are found to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, and limits are set on models for new physics including solar axion electron coupling, solar neutrino magnetic moment and millicharge, and electron couplings to galactic axion-like particles and hidden photons. Similar limits are set on weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter producing signals through ionized atomic states from the Migdal effect., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

Gravitational wave astronomy pipelines rely on template waveform models for searches and parameter estimation purposes. For coalescing binary neutron stars (BNS), such models need to accurately reproduce numerical relativity (NR) up to merger, in order to provide robust estimate of the stars' equation of state - dependent parameters. In this work we present an improved version of the Effective One Body (EOB) model $\tt TEOBResumS$ for gravitational waves from BNS systems. Building upon recent post-Newtonian calculations, we include subleading order tidal terms in the waveform multipoles and EOB metric potentials, as well as add up to 5.5PN terms in the gyro-gravitomagnetic functions entering the spin-orbit sector of the model. In order to further improve the EOB-NR agreement in the last few orbital cycles before merger, we introduce next-to-quasicircular corrections in the waveform -- informed by a large number of BNS NR simulations -- and introduce a new NR-informed parameter entering the tidal sector of our conservative dynamics. The performance of our model is then validated against 14 new eccentricity reduced simulations of unequal mass, spinning binaries with varying equation of state. A time-domain phasing analysis and mismatch computations demonstrate that the new model overall improves over the previous version of $\tt TEOBResumS$. Finally, we present a closed-form frequency domain representation of the (tidal) amplitude and phase of the new model. This representation accounts for mass-ratio, aligned spin and (resummed) spin-quadrupole effects in the tidal phase and -- within the calibration region -- it is faithful to the original model., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The new experimental measurements of beam spin asymmetry were performed for the deeply virtual exclusive $\pi^0$ production in a wide kinematic region with the photon virtualities $Q^2$ up to 8 GeV$^2$ and the Bjorken scaling variable $x_B$ in the valence regime. The data were collected by the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) at Jefferson Lab with longitudinally polarized 10.6 GeV electrons scattered on an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. Sizable asymmetry values indicate a substantial contribution from transverse virtual photon amplitudes to the polarized structure functions.The interpretation of these measurements in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) demonstrates their sensitivity to the chiral-odd GPD $\bar E_T$, which contains information on quark transverse spin densities in unpolarized and polarized nucleons and provides access to the proton's transverse anomalous magnetic moment. Abstract

Dark matter induced event rate in an Earth-based detector is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth's orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. Abstract

Mental fatigue is a leading cause of motor vehicle accidents, medical errors, loss of workplace productivity, and student disengagements in e-learning environment. Development of sensors and systems that can reliably track mental fatigue can prevent accidents, reduce errors, and help increase workplace productivity. This review provides a critical summary of theoretical models of mental fatigue, a description of key enabling sensor technologies, and a systematic review of recent studies using biosensor-based systems for tracking mental fatigue in humans. We conducted a systematic search and review of recent literature which focused on detection and tracking of mental fatigue in humans. The search yielded 57 studies (N=1082), majority of which used electroencephalography (EEG) based sensors for tracking mental fatigue. We found that EEG-based sensors can provide a moderate to good sensitivity for fatigue detection. Notably, we found no incremental benefit of using high-density EEG sensors for application in mental fatigue detection. Given the findings, we provide a critical discussion on the integration of wearable EEG and ambient sensors in the context of achieving real-world monitoring. Future work required to advance and adapt the technologies toward widespread deployment of wearable sensors and systems for fatigue monitoring in semi-autonomous and autonomous industries is examined., Comment: 19 Pages, 3 Figures

107. Retrocaval ureter presenting with hydronephrosis: A case report of rare entity in Nepal

Abstract

Hydronephrosis, characterized by the dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces, often results from obstructive uropathy, commonly due to ureterolithiasis. However, rare congenital anomalies, such as a retrocaval ureter (RCU)-where the ureter passes behind the inferior vena cava- can also cause hydronephrosis. This case report describes an 11-year-old male presenting with right-sided flank pain and hematuria. Initial ultrasonography and noncontrast CT revealed right hydronephrosis without ureteral stones. Subsequently, contrast-enhanced CT urography found an abnormality in the course of the right ureter behind the inferior vena cava. He was diagnosed with right retrocaval ureter with hydronephrosis, and managed by surgical resection of the retrocaval segment and uretero-ureteral anastomosis. The postoperative course was uneventful. RCU usually presents in the third or fourth decade of life, however, it should be in the differential diagnosis of hydronephrosis in the pediatric population. The diagnosis of RCU is often delayed and missed till advanced imaging like CT urography is sought for unexplained hydronephrosis. If left untreated, it may lead to chronic renal failure. Therefore, emphasis should be placed on timely diagnosis and management of retrocaval ureter.

Abstract

Cysticercosis, a major health issue in developing countries, is caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium. Disseminated cysticercosis (DCC), which is characterized by widespread cysticerci in various tissues, is rare and often asymptomatic. Here, we report the case of a 50-year-old man from rural Nepal with distal cholangiocarcinoma and DCC involving the skin, brain, orbit, tongue, soft palate, heart, and abdominal organs. Despite the presence of abdominal pain, obstructive jaundice, anemia, and significant weight loss—symptoms indicative of biliary malignancy—there were no symptoms typical of DCC. Diagnostic imaging confirmed DCC and stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. Histopathological examination of the periampullary mass revealed distal cholangiocarcinoma. Postsurgical treatment for DCC included steroids, carbamazepine, and antiparasitic therapy with albendazole. The coexistence of cysticercosis and neoplasia, though uncommon, necessitates thorough diagnostic evaluation. This case underscores the clinical complexity and highlights the need for comprehensive management of concurrent conditions.

Abstract

Rapid and efficient tendon fixation to a bone following trauma or in response to degenerative processes can be facilitated using a tendon anchoring device. Osteomimetic biomaterials, and in particular, bio-resorbable polymer composites designed to match the mineral phase content of native bone, have been shown to exhibit osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties in vivo and have been used in bone fixation for the past 2 decades. In this study, a resorbable, bioactive, and mechanically robust citrate-based composite formulated from poly(octamethylene citrate) (POC) and hydroxyapatite (HA) (POC-HA) was investigated as a potential tendon-fixation biomaterial. In vitro analysis with human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hMSCs) indicated that POC-HA composite materials supported cell adhesion, growth, and proliferation and increased calcium deposition, alkaline phosphatase production, the expression of osteogenic specific genes, and activation of canonical pathways leading to osteoinduction and osteoconduction. Further, in vivo evaluation of a POC-HA tendon fixation device in a sheep metaphyseal model indicates the regenerative and remodeling potential of this citrate-based composite material. Together, this study presents a comprehensive in vitro and in vivo analysis of the functional response to a citrate-derived composite tendon anchor and indicates that citrate-based HA composites offer improved mechanical and osteogenic properties relative to commonly used resorbable tendon anchor devices formulated from poly(L-co-D, l-lactic acid) and tricalcium phosphate PLDLA-TCP.

110. Differential flood insurance participation and housing market trajectories under future coastal flooding in the United States

Abstract

Abstract Communities respond to flooding events based upon risk perceptions and available adaptive behaviors (e.g., emigrating, purchasing insurance, constructing levees). Across the United States, sea level rise, intensifying storm-surges, and extreme rainfall may alter human-flood dynamics. Here, we use calibrated Socio-Environmental models of contiguous US coastal census tracts and two shared socio-economic pathways (SSP245 and SSP585). We project that by 2100, total flood insurance claims will increase by +25% to +130% under low (SSP245) and high (SSP585) emissions scenarios, respectively. The increase in flood insurance claims will impact mainly socially vulnerable communities. Further, we project that active NFIP policies will increase from +30% under low emission scenario to +60% under high emission scenario. Our finding also suggests the growing debt of the National Flood Insurance Program under higher emissions. Raising the water elevation threshold for coastal flooding by +1 meter via levees may reduce future surge-related losses by 95% and 40% under low and high emission scenarios and stabilize housing markets. Our future projections of flood insurance claims, policy coverage, and the impact of water elevation serve as credible hypotheses for the evolution of human flood dynamics under climate change. They can inform national flood policy and future research.

Abstract Background Loneliness has been identified as a significant independent predictor of depression among older adults. Social support has been reported to play a protective role against both loneliness and depression in older adults. However, few studies to date have investigated the three constructs concurrently and the mediating role of Perceived Social Support (PSS) on the relationship between loneliness and depression in this age group. The current study aimed to assess the relationship between loneliness and depression among community-dwelling Nepalese older adults based on the mediating role of PSS. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional research study included 367 community-dwelling older adults from a randomly selected ward in Kathmandu, Nepal. The University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were used. Abstract

This study investigates the effect of academic factors and student service on student satisfaction among business students with a specific focus on teacher attributes, program features, physical amenities, and administrative service. This study is one of the first attempts to identify crucial determinants of student satisfaction by combining data from business students from India and Nepal. For this purpose, a survey using the HEdPERF scale was conducted to collect data from 659 respondents using convenience sampling from North Eastern Hill University in India and Pokhara University in Nepal. PLS-SEM was used to assess the proposed links between the latent constructs. The findings indicated that program features and administrative services positively influence student satisfaction. However, teacher attributes and physical amenities were found to have no effect on student satisfaction. These findings demonstrate that universities should prioritize improving the quality of their programs and the efficiency of their administrative services in order to enhance student satisfaction. This study contributes to existing body of knowledge by delivering valuable insights into the factors that influence student satisfaction in the higher education institutions. It also provides practical recommendations for university administrators and education policymakers who are interested in improving educational experiences and outcomes.

Abstract

The term "computer-mediated communication" (CMC) describes the transmission of messages and information using computer technology. With the extensive use of email, instant messaging, social media, and other digital platforms in Nepal in recent years, this style of communication has grown in popularity. The article examines how computer-mediated communication (CMC) and artificial intelligence (AI) have grown in significance in Nepal's undergrad English education. This article allows students to collaborate on projects and tasks, which improves their learning experience, by examining the potential of AI and CMC. The facts of Nepal's education have been examined using the four different basic literature reviews. Despite the need for further literature on artificial intelligence and computer-mediated communication in Nepal's English classes for undergrads between 2018 and 2023, the studies reviewed shed light on the possibilities of technology and AI in language acquisition. Undergraduate class observation, self-administered text analysis, social information processing theory and experimental research, which involves adjusting variables to see how they affect learning results, were used to gather data. The study's findings also demonstrate how using CMC platforms encourages students to practice their digital literacy. They gain knowledge on how to move through online spaces, efficiently communicate with a variety of digital tools, and assess the reliability of information sources. Students can communicate with their teachers outside of the classroom via video conferencing software and online discussion boards. This may result in more in-depth discussions and debates as well as greater student engagement.

114. Rethinking Household Size and Children's Language Environment

Abstract

The number of U.S. children living in households with extended families has greatly increased in the last 4 decades. This demographic shift calls for a reevaluation of the impact of household size on children's development. Household density (HHD), measured as the ratio of people to bedrooms in a home, has been shown to negatively relate to children's language. Here, we propose that while greater HHD may result in poorer language abilities, more adults in relation to the number of children in the home may have a positive impact on children's language. To test this hypothesis, we studied relations between HHD and adult-to-child ratio with children's vocabulary scores, as well as whether maternal education and household chaos accounted for these associations. Participants included families from a range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds (N = 275; M[subscript age] = 10.85; 51% female; 51% Hispanic; annual income range less than $10,000-over $100,000). In general, higher HHD was related to lower child vocabulary scores. Conversely, higher adult-to-child ratio was related to higher child vocabulary and lower household chaos. These patterns were primarily driven by effects in Hispanic families. Our results suggest that a reevaluation of household size is needed, as more adults in the home can be protective for children's language development in larger families, an effect that may vary by culture.

115. Importance of Alternative Pathways to STEM through Analysis of Longitudinal Student Dataset

Abstract

Using a longitudinal national educational dataset, data science methods were applied to explain students' educational trajectories and determine the most predictive variables in STEM degree attainment. Challenging the notion of the STEM pipeline, an Alternative Pathways to STEM (APS) model was proposed. Using a foundation of Social Cognitive Career Theory, academic, demographic, and economic variables were selected for analysis and Imbalanced dataset and random forest data analytic techniques were implemented. Results supported the consideration of the Alternate Pathways to STEM model given the varied educational pathways identified throughout STEM matriculation. Additionally, multiple academic variables, except for career interest, were found to be most predictive of STEM graduation, while demographic and economic variables were not significant. These findings have important implications for recruiting STEM students and increasing STEM graduation rates. Additional research is recommended using these data extraction and analysis methodologies on other datasets to further test the efficacy of the Alternative Pathways to STEM model.

116. Countering English-Prioritised Monolingual Ideologies in Content Assessment through Translanguaging Practices in Higher Education

Abstract

This paper presents the use of translanguaging in the assessment of content subjects in the context of Nepal's higher education. Since its proposition in the 1990s, translanguaging has been receiving much scholarly attention in multilingual educational contexts. In such contexts, individuals' language practices show a shift from the understanding of languages as separate autonomous systems to the recognition of integrated and heteroglossic practices. Drawing on the analysis of relevant policy documents and examinees' answer sheets of formative assessment, and interviews with eight purposively selected teacher educators teaching at the master's level at a university in Nepal, this paper reports that examinees' translanguaging practices in responding to assessment questions exhibit their translanguaging instinct resisting unplanned English-prioritised monolingual policies. It also reveals fluidity and simultaneity in examinees' use of diverse linguistic resources defying demarcated language boundaries as aspired by the institution's English-prioritised policies. The study further reports layered translanguaging exercised by examinees which educators acknowledged as an attempt to enhance efficacy in content communication. Examinees' translanguaging practices and educators' acknowledgment of translanguaged writing indicate collective resistance from the bottom-up countering monoglossic ideologies in assessment systems. This implies consideration of examinees' and educators' roles in promoting translanguaging for future language policy changes to facilitate effective assessment.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of parental involvement on school readiness, focusing on the mediating role of preschoolers' self-efficacy. The research utilized a cross-sectional survey design with 1,000 preschool children from seven public kindergartens in Beijing, China. Structural equation modelling was employed for data analysis. The findings indicate that parental involvement, including its sub-dimensions of home-preschool conferencing, preschool-based involvement, and home-based involvement, significantly enhances preschoolers' self-efficacy and school readiness. This encompasses various readiness aspects such as physical and psychological, life, social, and learning readiness. Furthermore, a bootstrap test indicated that preschoolers' self-efficacy fully mediated the relationship between parental involvement and physical and psychological readiness, and school readiness.

Abstract

Background: Healthcare outcomes are influenced by both the effectiveness of healthcare delivery and the health literacy of patients. Patient education materials (PEMs) play a crucial role in disseminating health information to the patients. PEMs need to be at the level of grade six for optimal comprehension across diverse populations. However, that has not been the case in prior studies in healthcare-related fields. We aimed to evaluate the readability status of online PEMs of active adult and pediatric liver transplant institutions. Methods: We used standardized tools to calculate indices, namely Flesch Reading Ease (FRE), Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Gunning–Fog Score (GFS), Coleman–Liau Index (CLI), and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook for readability assessment. These indices use various measures, like average sentence length, average syllable per word, polysyllable count, and/or average number of letters per 100 words, to determine grade level. Results: The mean reading level of the PEMs was grade 10.73 ± 3.07, corresponding to grade 7 to 14. One-way ANOVA showed no statistically significant difference between these indices (p-value < 0.05). Conclusions: The readability of liver transplant centers’ PEMs exceeded the recommended level, hindering their generalizability to the broader population. This highlights the importance of optimizing the readability of PEMs to improve outcomes for equitable healthcare services.

Abstract

BackgroundSystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients are prone to frequent emergency department (ED) visits. This study explores the epidemiology and outcomes of ED visits by patients with SLE utilizing the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS).MethodsUsing NEDS (2019), SLE ED visits identified using ICD-10 codes (M32. xx) were compared with non-SLE ED visits in terms of demographic and clinical features and primary diagnoses associated with the ED visits. Factors associated with inpatient admission were analyzed using logistic regression. Variations in ED visits by age and race were assessed.ResultsWe identified 414,139 (0.35%) ED visits for adults ≥ 18 years with SLE. ED visits with SLE comprised more women, Black patients, ages 31-50 years, Medicare as the primary payer, and had higher comorbidity burden. A greater proportion of Black and Hispanic SLE patients who visited the ED were in the youngest age category of 18-30 years (around 20%) compared to White patients (less than 10%). Non-White patients had higher Medicaid utilization (27%-32% vs 19% in White patients). Comorbidity patterns varied based on race, with more White patients having higher rates of hyperlipidemia and ischemic heart disease (IHD) and more Black patients having chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertension, and heart failure. Categorizing by race, SLE/connective tissue disease (CTD) and infection were the most prevalent primary ED diagnosis in non-White and White patients, respectively. Age ≥ 65 years, male sex, and comorbidities were linked to a higher risk of admission. Black race (OR 0.86, p = .01) and lowest income quartile (OR 0.78, p = .003) had lower odds of inpatient admission.ConclusionInfection and SLE/CTD were among the top diagnoses associated with ED visits and inpatient admission. Despite comprising a significant proportion of SLE ED visits, Black patients had lower odds of admission. While the higher prevalence of older age groups, hyperlipidemia, and IHD among White patients may partly explain the disparate results, and further study is needed to understand the role of other factors including reliance on the ED for routine care compared among Black patients, differences in insurance coverage, and potential socioeconomic biases among healthcare providers.

Abstract

Computer-assisted treatment has emerged as a viable application of medical imaging, owing to the efficacy of deep learning models. Real-time inference speed remains a key requirement for such applications to help medical personnel. Even though there generally exists a trade-off between performance and model size, impressive efforts have been made to retain near-original performance by compromising model size. Neural network pruning has emerged as an exciting area that aims to eliminate redundant parameters to make the inference faster. In this study, we show an application of neural network pruning in polyp segmentation. We compute the importance score of convolutional filters and remove the filters having the least scores, which to some value of pruning does not degrade the performance. For computing the importance score, we use the Taylor First Order (TaylorFO) approximation of the change in network output for the removal of certain filters. Specifically, we employ a gradient-normalized backpropagation for the computation of the importance score. Through experiments in the polyp datasets, we validate that our approach can significantly reduce the parameter count and FLOPs retaining similar performance.

Abstract

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. 146. Can ChatGPT Enable ITS? The Case of Mixed Traffic Control via Reinforcement Learning

Abstract

The surge in Reinforcement Learning (RL) applications in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has contributed to its growth as well as highlighted key challenges. However, defining objectives of RL agents in traffic control and management tasks, as well as aligning policies with these goals through an effective formulation of Markov Decision Process (MDP), can be challenging and often require domain experts in both RL and ITS. Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 highlight their broad general knowledge, reasoning capabilities, and commonsense priors across various domains. In this work, we conduct a large-scale user study involving 70 participants to investigate whether novices can leverage ChatGPT to solve complex mixed traffic control problems. Three environments are tested, including ring road, bottleneck, and intersection. We find ChatGPT has mixed results. For intersection and bottleneck, ChatGPT increases number of successful policies by 150% and 136% compared to solely beginner capabilities, with some of them even outperforming experts. However, ChatGPT does not provide consistent improvements across all scenarios.

Abstract

Boundaries of Walker-Wang models have been used to construct commuting projector models which realize chiral unitary modular tensor categories (UMTCs) as boundary excitations. Given a UMTC $\mathcal{A}$ representing the Witt class of an anomaly, the article [arXiv:2208.14018] gave a commuting projector model associated to an $\mathcal{A}$-enriched unitary fusion category $\mathcal{X}$ on a 2D boundary of the 3D Walker-Wang model associated to $\mathcal{A}$. That article claimed that the boundary excitations were given by the enriched center/M\"uger centralizer $Z^\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{X})$ of $\mathcal{A}$ in $Z(\mathcal{X})$. In this article, we give a rigorous treatment of this 2D boundary model, and we verify this assertion using topological quantum field theory (TQFT) techniques, including skein modules and a certain semisimple algebra whose representation category describes boundary excitations. We also use TQFT techniques to show the 3D bulk point excitations of the Walker-Wang bulk are given by the M\"uger center $Z_2(\mathcal{A})$, and we construct bulk-to-boundary hopping operators $Z_2(\mathcal{A})\to Z^{\mathcal{A}}(\mathcal{X})$ reflecting how the UMTC of boundary excitations $Z^{\mathcal{A}}(\mathcal{X})$ is symmetric-braided enriched in $Z_2(\mathcal{A})$. 148. Creating a three dimensional intrinsic electric dipole on rotated CrI$_3$ bilayers

Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are being explored as a novel multiferroic platform. One of the most studied magnetoelectric multiferroic 2D materials are antiferromagnetically-coupled (AFM) CrI$_3$ bilayers. Neglecting magnetism, those bilayers possess a crystalline point of inversion, which is only removed by the antiparallel spin configuration among its two constituent monolayers. The resultant intrinsic electric dipole on those bilayers has a magnitude no larger than 0.04 pC/m, it points out-of-plane, and it reverts direction when the--Ising-like--cromium spins are flipped (toward opposite layers {\em versus} away from opposite layers). The combined presence of antiferromagnetism and a weak intrinsic electric dipole makes this material a two-dimensional magnetoelectric multiferroic. Here, we remove the crystalline center of inversion of the bilayer by a relative $60^{\circ}$ rotation of its constituent monolayers. This process {\em enhances} the out-of-plane intrinsic electric dipole tenfold with respect to its magnitude in the non-rotated AFM bilayer and also creates an even stronger and switchable in-plane intrinsic electric dipole. The ability to create a three-dimensional electric dipole is important, because it enhances the magnetoelectric coupling on this experimentally accessible 2D material, which is explicitly calculated here as well., Comment: Accepted at PRB on May 1, 2023

149. Efficient Quality-Diversity Optimization through Diverse Quality Species

Abstract

A prevalent limitation of optimizing over a single objective is that it can be misguided, becoming trapped in local optimum. This can be rectified by Quality-Diversity (QD) algorithms, where a population of high-quality and diverse solutions to a problem is preferred. Most conventional QD approaches, for example, MAP-Elites, explicitly manage a behavioral archive where solutions are broken down into predefined niches. In this work, we show that a diverse population of solutions can be found without the limitation of needing an archive or defining the range of behaviors in advance. Instead, we break down solutions into independently evolving species and use unsupervised skill discovery to learn diverse, high-performing solutions. We show that this can be done through gradient-based mutations that take on an information theoretic perspective of jointly maximizing mutual information and performance. We propose Diverse Quality Species (DQS) as an alternative to archive-based QD algorithms. We evaluate it over several simulated robotic environments and show that it can learn a diverse set of solutions from varying species. Furthermore, our results show that DQS is more sample-efficient and performant when compared to other QD algorithms.
