The third generation sources of soft X-rays, ALS and ELETTRA, have been producing data in surface and interface science for over two years. The impact of their ultrahigh brightness is quite evident, particularly as far as photoemission techniques are concerned. We illustrate this point with a short review of very recent examples from ELETTRA, in the specific domains of time resolution, high lateral resolution and high energy resolution.

Abstract

New materials based on metal-oxygen clusters are promising stages of development in nano/micro electronic applications that can lead to the emergence of a new technology. Molecules containing several transition metal ions can exhibit properties similar to nanoscale magnetic particles. Our approach in this field is the study of the electronic structure of these materials by means of spectroscopic investigations in combination with theoretical calculations. The electronic structure of magnetic molecules of the type [Fe(FeL2)3]*4CHCl3 where L=CH3N(CH2CH2O)^2-_2 NO2 has been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, soft X-ray emission spectroscopy as well as theoretical density-functional-based methods. Experimental XPS results are in a good agreement to the calculated tDOS, also the partial DOS agrees very well with the XES results. The Fe core level spectra indicate that Fe is in the Fe 2+ state, which is in a good agreement with the calculated magnetic moment of 4 muB/f.u. The neighbouring atoms primarily oxygen and nitrogen exhibit a magnetic polarisation yielding effective spin S=5/2 per iron atom. Due to antiparallel orientation of the magnetic moments of the central Fe ion relatively to three peripheric Fe, the total resulting spin per molecule in the ground state amounts to S=5.

Abstract

We have investigated for the first time the orbital ordering in a three dimensional colossal magneto resistance manganite, namely La7/8Sr1/8MnO3, by applying soft x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) to the Mn L edge [1]. We found that the cooperative Jahn Teller distorted orthorhombic phase, which is present at a temperature of 240 K, is probably accompanied by a predominantly cross type (x2−z2)/(y2−z2) orbital ordering. This result is discussed in the light of previous results obtained by means of resonant x-ray scattering at the Mn K edge and different exchange interaction models. [1] K. Kuepper et al., J. Phys. Abstract

We have investigated the electronic structure of Sr2FeMoO6. In order to probe the partial densities of states we applied soft x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to the Fe L, the Mo M and the O K edges. We discuss the results in the light of complementary measurements of the valence band by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and first-principles generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and LDA + U band structure calculations [1]. Abstract

Seeded free electron lasers theoretically have the intensity, tunability, and resolution required for multiphoton spectroscopy of atomic and molecular species. Using the seeded free electron laser FERMI and a novel detection scheme, we have revealed the two-photon excitation spectra of dipole-forbidden doubly excited states in helium. The spectral profiles of the lowest (-1,0)^{+1} ^{1}S^{e} and (0,1)^{0} ^{1}D^{e} resonances display energy shifts in the meV range that depend on the pulse intensity. The results are explained by an effective two-level model based on calculated Rabi frequencies and decay rates.

Abstract

We have investigated nonlinear processes in small molecules by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy using the Linac Coherent Light Source free electron laser, and by simulations. The main focus of the experiments was the formation of the two-site double core-hole (tsDCH) states in the molecules CO2, N2O and N-2. These experiments are described in detail and the results are compared with simulations of the photoelectron spectra. The double core-hole states, and in particular the tsDCH states, have been predicted to be highly sensitive to the chemical environment. The theory behind this chemical sensitivity is validated by the experiments. Furthermore, our simulations of the relative integrated intensities of the peaks associated with the nonlinear processes show that this type of simulation, in combination with experimental data, provides a useful tool for estimating the duration of ultra-short x-ray pulses.

Abstract

We report on a detailed investigation into the electron emission processes of Ne atoms exposed to intense femtosecond x-ray pulses, provided by the Linac Coherent Light Source Free Electron Laser (FEL) at Stanford. The covariance mapping technique is applied to analyse the data, and the capability of this approach to disentangle both linear and nonlinear correlation features which may be hidden on coincidence maps of the same data set is demonstrated. Different correction techniques which enable improvements on the quality of the spectral features extracted from the covariance maps are explored. Finally, a method for deriving characteristics of the x-ray FEL pulses based on covariance mapping in combination with model simulations is presented.

Abstract

When exposed to ultraintense x-radiation sources such as free electron lasers (FELs) the innermost electronic shell can efficiently be emptied, creating a transient hollow atom or molecule. Understanding the femtosecond dynamics of such systems is fundamental to achieving atomic resolution in flash diffraction imaging of noncrystallized complex biological samples. We demonstrate the capacity of a correlation method called "partial covariance mapping'' to probe the electron dynamics of neon atoms exposed to intense 8 fs pulses of 1062 eV photons. A complete picture of ionization processes competing in hollow atom formation and decay is visualized with unprecedented ease and the map reveals hitherto unobserved nonlinear sequences of photoionization and Auger events. The technique is particularly well suited to the high counting rate inherent in FEL experiments.

Abstract

We have performed x-ray two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy using the Linac Coherent Light Source x-ray free-electron laser in order to study double core-hole (DCH) states of CO2, N2O, and N2. The experiment verifies the theory behind the chemical sensitivity of two-site DCH states by comparing a set of small molecules with respect to the energy shift of the two-site DCH state and by extracting the relevant parameters from this shift.

Abstract

We use extremely intense, ultrashort soft X-Ray pulses generated by the LCLS X-Ray Free Electron Laser to investigate the production of molecular double core-hole states by sequential two-photon X-Ray absorption. The effect of critical LCLS parameters such as the number of photons per pulse, the pulse duration, and the focal spot size on the photoelectron and Auger spectra is modeled in detail and the results of these simulations are used as an aid in the interpretation of the experimental spectra obtained. The emphasis is on double core-hole formation in small polyatomic molecules such as CO2.

Abstract

The first members of dipole allowed 3 P o doubly excited series in helium have been observed in resonant photoexcitation of 1 s 2 s 3 S e metastable atoms. A good agreement measured relative photoionization cross sections is achieved when theory includes the radiation damping and, also important, the effects of spin-orbit multiplet splitting on electron angular distribution.

Abstract

Recent studies of the magnetic properties of Sr2FeMoO6, a half metallic double perovskite showing large magneto resistance effects at room temperature, by means of site specific x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) have led to very different results concerning the Fe valence state. We present a detailed study of a Sr2FeMoO6 polycrystalline sample, which has been probed by means of XAS and XMCD over several years. We find a mixed valent Fe2+, Fe3+ state, which shifts towards Fe3+ with time. An understanding of such a chemical change is of importance for potential applications of Sr2FeMoO6 and related transition metal oxides.

Abstract

The hydrogen Lyman-alpha, Balmer-alpha, and Balmer-beta emission has been measured from the H2O molecule at photon energies exceeding the 1s ionization threshold. Fluorescence emission is shown to be a sensitive probe to neutral core-hole doubly excited states and singly ionized 1s shake-up states that are embedded in the core ionization continuum. In addition, the photoabsorption spectrum of the water molecule in the energy range of the double excitations has been measured with better statistics than previously.

Abstract

We have investigated for the first time the orbital ordering in a three dimensional colossal magneto resistance manganite, namely La7/8Sr1/8MnO3, by applying soft x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) to the Mn L edge [1]. We found that the cooperative Jahn Teller distorted orthorhombic phase, which is present at a temperature of 240 K, is probably accompanied by a predominantly cross type (x2−z2)/(y2−z2) orbital ordering. This result is discussed in the light of previous results obtained by means of resonant x-ray scattering at the Mn K edge and different exchange interaction models. [1] K. Kuepper et al., J. Phys. Abstract

Photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy has been used to study the fragmentation of the water molecule at the O 1s is edge. Fluorescence emission has been observed from the neutral fragments H, O and OH as well as from the ionic fragments O+ and OH+. The extracted fluorescence yields of the H Lyman-alpha emission and O 2p(3)(S-4)3p(P-3) -> 2p(3)(S-4)3s(S-3) transitions show the same structures as the total ion yield spectrum but with different relative intensities. The most intense fluorescence emission is restricted to the region of the core excitations, while above the O 1s ionization limit the signal is much weaker (in the case of H) or below the detection limit (O, OH and OH+). The fluorescence emission is concluded to follow from the following general cascade: the core-excited states decay by resonant Auger transitions, the final states reached undergo dissociation into ionic and neutral fragments, and fluorescence occurs from excited fragments. In the case of the OH (A(2)Sigma(+) -> X-2 Pi) emission, the decay of core-excited states through soft x-ray emission may also be responsible for the observed fluorescence., QC 20100910

Abstract

The Balmer emission from atomic hydrogen has been recorded across the resonances at the oxygen K edge of the water molecule using synchrotron radiation excitation. The emission is observed to be strongest at excitations to Rydberg resonances. The observations are interpreted using a qualitative model for the dynamics of the core-to-Rydberg excited molecule. The model links the quantum state of the core-excited water molecule via resonant Auger decay and subsequent dissociation to the state of the fluorescing hydrogen atom., QC 20100910

Abstract

The electronic structure of the single molecule magnet system {M[Fe(L1)2]3}*4CHCl3, (M = Fe, Cr; L1 = CH3N(CH2CH2O)2 2-) has been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,X-ray absorption spectroscopy, soft X-ray emission spectroscopy, as well as theoretical density functional-based methods. There is good agreement between theoretical calculations and experimental data. The valence band mainly consists of three bands between 2 eV and 30 eV. Both theory and experiments show that the top of the valence band is dominated by the hybridization between Fe 3d and O 2p bands. From the shape of the Fe 2p spectra it is argued that Fe in the molecule is most likely in the 2+ charge state. Its neighboring atoms (O, N) exhibit a magnetic polarisation yielding effective spin S=5/2 per iron atom, giving a high spin state molecule with a total S=5 effective spin for the case of M = Fe.
