The International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) was established by the community at the ninth "International Workshop on Neutrino Factories, super-beams, and beta- beams" which was held in Okayama in August 2007. The IDS-NF mandate is to deliver the Reference Design Report (RDR) for the facility on the timescale of 2012/13. In addition, the mandate for the study [3] requires an Interim Design Report to be delivered midway through the project as a step on the way to the RDR. This document, the IDR, has two functions: it marks the point in the IDS-NF at which the emphasis turns to the engineering studies required to deliver the RDR and it documents baseline concepts for the accelerator complex, the neutrino detectors, and the instrumentation systems. The IDS-NF is, in essence, a site-independent study. Example sites, CERN, FNAL, and RAL, have been identified to allow site-specific issues to be addressed in the cost analysis that will be presented in the RDR. The choice of example sites should not be interpreted as implying a preferred choice of site for the facility.

A man with known pulmonary sarcoidosis presented with paraplegia and a rod-shaped increase in T2 signal intensity in his cervical and upper thoracic spine. Initial treatment efforts using oral doses of 40 mg of methyl-prednisolone were futile, but intravenous bolus therapy (500 mg of methyl-prednisolone daily for 1 week) led to long-lasting improvement of his neurological status and to normalization of MRI findings.

International audience; Two designs considered by the International Scoping Study (ISS) for the final stage of the neutrino factory are the triangle and bow-tie muon decay rings. Unlike the racetrack design, these geometries enable two detectors to be targeted from one storage ring. A beam dynamics study of both rings is carried out using the Zgoubi tracking code. In particular the operating point in tune space is optimised. Results of muon spin tracking are presented.

Introducción Los tics son el trastorno del movimiento más frecuente en la edad pediátrica. Es común la existencia de historia familiar de tics y de antecedentes familiares y personales de trastornos neurocomportamentales. Los tics pueden comprometer de modo importante las actividades de la vida diaria del individuo. Objetivo Estudio de las características de los tics de niños y adolescentes de la Consulta de Neuropediatría del Hospital Geral de Santo António. Materiales y métodos Análisis retrospectivo de los casos de tics usando la información recogida de las respectivas historias clínicas. Se utilizaron los criterios del Manual diagnóstico y estadístico de los trastornos mentales en su cuarta revisión de textos (DSM-IV-TR) de 2000, de la Asociación Americana de Psiquiatría. Resultados Fueron analizadas las historias clínicas de 78 individuos, 84,6 % de los cuales eran del sexo masculino. Más de un tercio de los casos pertenecía al grupo etario de los 4 a los 8 años de edad. En el 5,1% los tics se iniciaron antes de los 2 años. Historia familiar de tics, depresión y trazos de enfermedad obsesivo-compulsiva ocurrieron en aproximadamente un 30 % de los casos. La comorbilidad más frecuente fue el trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad (TDAH) (67,9%). Se verificó la posible ocurrencia de trastorno neuropsiquiátrico autoinmune pediátrico (PANDAS) en 5 casos. Los tics motores precedieron a los vocales en todos los casos. En más de dos tercios los tics eran simples. En el 59,0 % de los casos los tics eran crónicos, y el 45,7 % de éstos cumplían criterios de trastorno de Gilles de la Tourette. El 43,1 % de los individuos con tics crónicos habían sido medicados, la mayoría con risperidona. Conclusiones De un modo general los resultados de este estudio son concordantes con los descritos en la literatura especializada, subrayándose la necesidad de considerar el diagnóstico en edades precoces, y señalándose la importancia de identificación y terapéutica adecuada de las comorbilidades.Introduction Tics are the most frequent abnormal movement in children. A familial history of tics and a personal and familial history of neurobehavioral disturbances are common in children with this abnormality. Tics may seriously compromise daily activities in affected individuals. Objective To identify the characteristics of tics in children and adolescents followed-up in the Neuropediatric Unit of the Hospital Geral de Santo António. Materials and methods We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with tics based on information collected from medical records. The diagnostic criteria of the DSM IV-TR 2000 of the American Psychiatric Association were used. Results The medical records of 78 children were analyzed, 84.6% of whom were boys. More than one third of the patients were aged 4 to 8 years old. In 5.1% of the patients tics developed before the age of 2 years. A familial history of tics, depression and obsessive disorder traits was found in approximately 30 % of patients. The most frequent comorbidity was attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (67.9 %). The occurrence of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcus infection (PANDAS) was suggested in five patients. In all patients, motor tics occurred before vocal tics. In more than two thirds of the patients, tics were simple. In 59.0% of the patients, tics were chronic, and in 45.7% of these met the criteria for Tourette’s syndrome. A total of 43.1% of the patients with chronic tics received pharmacotherapy, risperidone being the most frequently used drug. Conclusions In general the results of the present study are in agreement with those of previous studies, underlining the need to consider a diagnosis of tics in young children and highlighting the importance of identification and appropriate treatment of comorbidities.

Los quistes esplénicos congénitos son entidades poco frecuentes, particularmente en la edad pediátrica. En la literatura especializada existen pocos casos publicados con diagnóstico durante el período prenatal. Los autores describen 2 casos clínicos, identificados por ecografía prenatal a las 34 y 30 semanas de gestación, y su evolución posnatal hasta su resolución espontánea a los 5 meses y a los 2 años de vida, respectivamente. Se revisa la etiología, clínica y evolución de esta patología.Congenital splenic cysts are uncommon entities, especially in children. Few cases diagnosed in the prenatal period have been reported in the literature. We describe two cases that were identified by prenatal sonography at 34 and 30 gestational weeks. Their follow- up until spontaneous full regression at 5 months and 2 years, respectively, is discussed. The etiology, clinical findings, and clinical course of this entity are reviewed.

For the high brilliance LHC ultimate beam and the high intensity CNGS beam, single batch injections into the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) will be used to increase the overall machine intensity compared with the present double batch injections. Charge-exchange injection into the PS Booster with a new linac at intermediate energies is thus examined. A key parameter to consider is the energy dependence of beam incoherent tune shifts at injection. Increasing the linac energy from the present 50 MeV to 160 MeV should yield a safer tune shift. For each PS Booster ring, a charge-exchange injection scheme is envisaged inside a proper straight section, redesigned with new bends to make a local bump and using the existing fast bump magnets for horizontal phase-space painting. ACCSIM simulations for charge-exchange injection at 160 MeV have been investigated for both LHC and CNGS beams. After optimizing the parameters that are used for the space charge tracking routines, the results of the simulations agree well with expectations, signifying that the LHC ultimate and CNGS beams may be provided with single PS Booster batches within the required emittances. For assessment, simulation of injection at 50 MeV for the current LHC beam has been performed, yielding a fairly good agreement with measured performance. Concurrently, similar charge-exchange injection simulations have been carried out using an alternative programme developed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

The workshop ‘Physics with a multi-Megawatt (MMW) Proton Source' was held at CERN on 25-27 May 2004. It was organized by the ECFA/BENE working groups for future neutrino facilities in Europe and by the EURISOL nuclear physics community to explore the physics opportunities offered by a new high intensity proton accelerator. It confirmed the important synergies that exist between these communities. This document summarises the main design choices for the accelerators and experiments involved, the physics possibilities and the most critical R&D that will be necessary. A preliminary baseline road map is delineated

The Neutrino Factory is a new concept for an accelerator that produces a high-intensity, high-energy beam of electron and muon neutrinos - the ultimate tool for neutrino oscillation studies and the only machine conceived up today that could help detect CP violation of leptons. The basic concept of the Neutrino Factory is the production of neutrinos from the decay of high-energy muons. Due to their short lifetime, these muons have to be accelerated very fast. Several new accelerator techniques, like a high-intenstiy proton linac, high-power targets, ionization cooling or recirculating muon linacs are required. This paper presents a snapshot of the accelerator design at CERN. Although some aspects of this European Neutrino Factory Scheme have been optimised for the CERN site, the basic principle is site-independent.

The paper describes the CERN approach for a proton driver for a Neutrino Factory. Two main layouts are presented: the so-called CERN Reference Scenario, based on a 2.2 GeV linac and an alternative one, based on a 30 GeV synchrotron. Both produce bunches of 1 ns (r.m.s.) and a beam power of 4 MW.

An 8 Hz proton driver for a neutrino factory of 4 MW beam power and an energy of 25-30 GeV is under study at CERN, in parallel with a similar investigation using a 2.2 GeV high-energy linac and an accumulator plus a compressor ring cycling at 75 Hz. At RAL, synchrotron drivers with final energies of 5 and 15 GeV cycling at 50 and 25 Hz, respectively, are being studied. With these four scenarios, one hopes to cope with all possible constraints emerging from the studies of the pion production target and the muon rotation and cooling system. The high beam energy of this scenario requires less proton current and could inject into the SPS above transition and upgrade LHC and fixed target physics. Its 440 kW booster would upgrade ISOLDE.The main problems of the driver synchrotron are: the requirement of about 4 MV RF voltage at 10 MHz for acceleration and adiabatic bunch compression to the required r.m.s length of 1 ns; the sensitivity of the compression to the impedance of the vacuum chamber and to non-linearities of the momentum compaction of the high-gt lattice.

The proton driver for a neutrino factory must provide megawatts of beam power at a few GeV, with nonosecond long bunches each containing more than 1x1012 protons. Such beam powers are within reach of a high-energy linac, but the required time structure cannot be provided without accumulation and compression. The option of a linac-based 2.2 GeV proton driver has been studied at CERN, taking into account the space charge and stability problems which make beam accumulation and bunch compression difficult at such a low-energy. A solution featuring two rings of approximately 1 km circumference has been worked out and is described in this paper. The subjects deserving further investigation are outlined.

The injection of heavy ions into high current rings is complicated because it is impossible to use charge exchange in material foils to produce the singly charged heavy ions needed to keep space charge manageable on the one hand, and because losses need to be rigorously restricted to < 1 % on the other. With these constraints, the number of turns that may be injected by conventional multiturn injection is limited. This paper describes how the number may be increased by a two-dimensional technique of painting Lissajous-like patterns in x-y space, using an inclined or a corner septum. Simulation examples are presented showing the nature of the beam created in the accumulator and the likely effects of space charge forces.
