101. Multiscale Discriminant Saliency for Visual Attention

Abstract

The bottom-up saliency, an early stage of humans' visual attention, can be considered as a binary classification problem between center and surround classes. Discriminant power of features for the classification is measured as mutual information between features and two classes distribution. The estimated discrepancy of two feature classes very much depends on considered scale levels; then, multi-scale structure and discriminant power are integrated by employing discrete wavelet features and Hidden markov tree (HMT). With wavelet coefficients and Hidden Markov Tree parameters, quad-tree like label structures are constructed and utilized in maximum a posterior probability (MAP) of hidden class variables at corresponding dyadic sub-squares. Then, saliency value for each dyadic square at each scale level is computed with discriminant power principle and the MAP. Finally, across multiple scales is integrated the final saliency map by an information maximization rule. Both standard quantitative tools such as NSS, LCC, AUC and qualitative assessments are used for evaluating the proposed multiscale discriminant saliency method (MDIS) against the well-know information-based saliency method AIM on its Bruce Database wity eye-tracking data. Abstract

Both pixel-based scale saliency (PSS) and basis project methods focus on multiscale analysis of data content and structure. Their theoretical relations and practical combination are previously discussed. However, no models have ever been proposed for calculating scale saliency on basis-projected descriptors since then. This paper extend those ideas into mathematical models and implement them in the wavelet-based scale saliency (WSS). While PSS uses pixel-value descriptors, WSS treats wavelet sub-bands as basis descriptors. The paper discusses different wavelet descriptors: discrete wavelet transform (DWT), wavelet packet transform (DWPT), quaternion wavelet transform (QWT) and best basis quaternion wavelet packet transform (QWPTBB). WSS saliency maps of different descriptors are generated and compared against other saliency methods by both quantitative and quanlitative methods. Quantitative results, ROC curves, AUC values and NSS values are collected from simulations on Bruce and Kootstra image databases with human eye-tracking data as ground-truth. 109. Blind Image Quality Assessment Based on Separate Representations and Adaptive Interaction of Content and Distortion

Abstract

The visual quality of an image mainly relies on its content and its distortions. However, the adaptability between their contributions to the image quality has not be well investigated yet. Besides, albeit of many promising efforts, lacking sufficient labeled data still hinders the robust representation of quality-related information. In this work, we first design a self-supervised architecture, named collaborative autoencoder (COAE), to separately represent the content and the distortion information, and then develop a Self-Adaptive Weighting based quAlity predictoR (SAWAR) to balance the individual representations of the content and the distortions in the prediction of image quality. Specifically, the COAE is trained with large-scale unlabeled data, consisting of a content autoencoder (CAE) and a distortion autoencoder (DAE) that work collaboratively and individually. While the CAE is a standard autoencoder for the content representation, the design of the DAE is unique. We introduce the CAE-encoded content representation as an extra input to the decoder of the DAE to learn to reconstruct distorted images, thus effectively forcing it to extract the distortion representation. The SAWAR, whose parameter number is much smaller than that of the COAE, is trained with labeled data in existing IQA datasets. It takes advantage of the interaction between the image content and the distortions to adaptively balance their contributions. Extensive experiments show that the COAE effectively extracts quality-related representations and the SAWAR achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

110. Generating Counterfactual Instances for Explainable Class-Imbalance Learning

Abstract

Existing class imbalance learning paradigms focus on lifting the importance of minority instance, aiming to improve the model in terms of certain evaluation metrics (e.g., AUC and $F_{1}$F1-measure). One drawback of these methods is that they lack enough transparency, hence, cannot be fully trusted in vital domains. To this end, this paper deal with the class imbalance learning task with counterfactual instances. Given an instance and a classifier, a counterfactual is a fake instance which, while having smallest distance to the original instance, is classified as a different class by the classifier. Therefore, the most important features for a classifier can be identified by inspecting the difference between an instance and its counterfactual. To utilize counterfactuals, a novel Explainable Generative Adversarial Network (EXGAN) is proposed. EXGAN has a unique “two generators versus multiple discriminators” architecture where the generators are used to generate effective counterfactuals and discriminators are trained for the class imbalance learning task. In addition to the architecture, an innovative ensemble loss function ensuring each discriminator complementing each other is designed to overcome the class imbalance issue. Extensive experiments prove that the counterfactuals generated by EXGAN can be used to produce effective local explanation and provide significant better class imbalance learning ability than existing competitors.

119. An investigation of neural networks for image processing applications

Abstract

This thesis investigates areas of neural networks and their application to aspects of image processing. Three neural network models, namely the backpropagation network, the Hopfield network and the competitive network, are studied. First, the learning algorithms for backpropagation networks and competitive neural networks are studied and new algorithms are developed. The applications of Hopfield neural networks to image coding, and of backpropagation networks to image data compression, are then investigated, and new techniques are presented. The learning algorithms for feed-forward neural networks are studied. A modified backpropagation algorithm is developed for accelerating the learning of backpropagation networks. Simulation results for four benchmark tasks are presented which show that the new method provides improved acceleration of learning, and global convergence characteristics. The learning algorithms for competitive neural networks are investigated. By incorporating principles of statistical mechanics into competitive learning, a new simulated annealing procedure for training competitive neural networks, the Stochastic Competitive Learning Algorithm (SCLA), is developed. Simulation results are presented which show that the SCLA is insensitive to the initial values of weight vectors, and can achieve a lower cost function value than other established competitive learning algorithms, and is therefore a valuable tool for data clustering. The computational power of Hopfield neural networks is employed for image coding applications. A new Hopfield neural network based block truncation coding (HNNBTC) technique is developed. The new HNNBTC is shown to provide improved performance over established block truncation coding techniques both in terms of mean square error performance and visual quality of the coded images. Two variations of the HNNBTC technique are also presented which are shown to provide increased compression ratios without sacrificing much of the visual quality of the coded images. The application of backpropagation networks to image data compression are investigated, and two new techniques are developed. The ceniralised MLP (CMLP) image data compression scheme is developed, which is aimed at improving the networks' generalisation capabilities, thereby enabling them to effectively compress a wide range of novel images. The learning edge patterns using MLPs (LEPMLPs) scheme, for image data compression is developed, which is aimed at improving the reconstruction of edges, thus improving the visual quality of the reconstructed images. Tabulated experimental results and example reconstructed novel images, for the original method and the new techniques, are presented, which demonstrate the improved image compression perfonnance gained using these new techniques.

Abstract

Brand logo detection is a special aspect of machine vision. However, Video logo detection benchmarks are scarce in the public domain. We exploit the power of a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and leverage established datasets related to existing applications to develop a deep-transfer active-learning (DTAL) algorithm to select the most valuable samples so that the smallest number possible needs to be labeled to achieve maximum performance improvements for video object detection model training. By exploiting the possible shared deep feature space between static and video datasets through transfer learning based on highly adaptable DCNN features, DTAL implements diversity-based active learning to select the most informative samples from a sequence of similar image frames for video object detection. We successfully apply the new DTAL algorithm to implement active learning for logo detection from live streaming sports videos as well as pedestrian and face detection from video data. We show that DTAL is a better active-learning method than state-of-the-art deep-learning-based active-learning object detection techniques. We also contribute one of the largest video-based logo resources, the Sports Match Video Logo (SMVL) dataset, to facilitate general logo detection research using transfer- and active-learning applications for video object detection.
