En vue d'atteindre efficacement les objectifs de la directive européenne cadre sur l'eau (DCE) concernant le suivi des tendances temporelles et spatiales des concentrations des contaminants dans les masses d'eaux, ainsi que l'application des normes de qualité environnementales (NQE) biote établies pour trois substances prioritaires (le mercure total, l'hexachlorobenzène et l'hexachlorobutadiène), il convient aujourd'hui d'harmoniser et de normaliser à la fois les méthodologies d'échantillonnage et les critères de choix des organismes sentinelles. Ce document résume les différentes études réalisées sur ce sujet. Il présente les avantages et les inconvénients dans l'utilisation des différents organismes sentinelles pour la surveillance chimique et décrit les méthodes d'échantillonnage les plus souvent pratiquées au sein des programmes de surveillance. Les mousses aquatiques sont un outil biologique bien connu en France pour le suivi temporel et spatial des métaux dans les cours d'eau. Leur inconvénient principal est la difficulté de leur application à la surveillance pour la DCE en l'absence de NQE biote pour les métaux. Les mollusques bivalves tels que la dreissène (Dreissena polymorpha) sont également bien connus et utilisés en France (ex. : PIREN Seine) et dans autres pays (ex. :Mussel Watch aux Etats-Unis) pour la surveillance des métaux et des micropolluants organiques. Néanmoins ce sont des espèces invasives, aussi il serait plus judicieux de porter le choix sur une espèce indigène (autochtone) comme l'anodonte du cygne (Anodonta cygnea) par exemple. Par contre, il existe peu d'études de surveillance réalisées avec cette espèce en vue de la valider en tant que biomoniteur. D'autres macroinvertébrés tels que les chironomes (Chironomus riparius) et les gammares (Gammarus pulex) présentent un intérêt certain pour le suivi des métaux notamment, mais les études utilisant ces organismes sont actuellement généralement limitées aux tests de toxicité et de biomarqueurs, et peu de suivis sur la bioaccumulation des contaminants chez ces espèces sont documentés. Les espèces piscicoles sont également intéressantes pour le suivi des contaminants organiques ainsi que pour les métaux. La difficulté réside ici dans le choix d'une ou de plusieurs espèces sentinelles représentatives des masses d'eaux à surveiller, ainsi que dans l'harmonisation des paramètres d'échantillonnage (ex. : le nombre d'individus par échantillon composite, la gamme de taille ou d'âge à cibler) et le choix des organes à cibler pour les analyses des contaminants.

International audience; In fall 2005, fish contamination by PCBs above the threshold for fish consumption was observed in the Rhone river, in the vicinity of Lyon (France). This incidental observation triggered a series of investigations on fish and sediments contamination all along the main stream, and is currently extending to tributaries. The data gathered during this still ongoing process should help managers to identify the main sources among the host of potential ones, provided distinct patterns can be identified in relation to these sources. PCB congener pattern analysis in sediments is challenging because weathering processes will modify the original patterns in several ways; moreover, at mid- or downstream sites the various upstream sources will provide mixed patterns. Classical multivariate analyses suffer several pitfalls for such pattern analysis, making it difficult to clearly discriminate among PCB sources. A combination of information about sources or weathering processes, and classification approaches, should nevertheless help to establish relationships between the patterns observed in sediment layers and the sources, yielding an approach helping to sort out priorities for further diagnosis or management actions. The method's development and the first results obtained will be presented.

International audience; Vineyard areas are important causes of water ecosystems contamination, especially by pesticides residues. These compounds could markedly disturb the aquatic biocenosis particularly the photosynthetic organisms that are targeted by herbicides. On the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Ardières Morcille watershed, an area impacted by Beaujolais vineyard (SE France), biofilms and diatoms were used as bioindicators for quality assessment, during the pesticide spreading period (April-May 2008). Along the increasing up- to downstream gradient of trophic (mainly orthophosphate) and pesticide pollution, biofilm communities were allowed to settle on glass slides for 4 or 8 weeks at three sites. After a 4-week colonisation some samples from the two contaminated downstream sites were transferred upstream in the clean site for four weeks and the other stayed in the same place. Periphytic communities were always dominated by brown algae. From up- to downstream, biofilm biomass and diatom species richness decreased; normalized diatom indices (including the French standard BDI) expressed quite well the increase in trophy. Species composition of the assemblages was used to discriminate between the effects of nutrients and toxicants, which increased simultaneously along the river. The biofilm samples transferred upstream recovered quite differently, depending on the location of their original site in the contamination gradient. Most of the quantitative descriptors reached a level comparable to that of the reference communities (grown for 8 weeks at the reference site), but the diatom assemblages (cell densities per colonized surface unit, taxonomic composition of the samples) varied between dates and along the gradient. These communities did not entirely recover a reference structure but the increase in diversity, associated with the settlement of sensitive species, suggested an elevated resilience potential.

National audience; Les derniers textes réglementaires traduisent l'enjeu que représente l'objectif de la restauration du bon état écologique et chimique des milieux aquatiques d'ici 2015. En collaboration avec différents partenaires publics et privés nationaux ou internationaux, et avec le soutien du ministère de l'industrie et de la recherche (ANR Precodd), le Cemagref a engagé des travaux de recherche ayant pour objectifs de développer et valider des méthodologies et des outils d'échantillonnage et d'analyse des micropolluants dans les eaux et les boues de stations d'épuration domestiques. Il s'agit des substances prioritaires (Directive 2000/60/CE), d'une sélection de substances dangereuses (Directive 76/464) et émergentes (ex : substances pharmaceutiques). Ces mesures ont permis de mesurer la composition en substances des eaux usées et traitées d'origine domestique, et de quantifier l'efficacité d'élimination de différentes filières d'épuration vis-à-vis de ces substances: boues activées, biofiltration, filtres plantés de roseaux, bioréacteurs à membranes immergées, traitement tertiaire oxydant ou filtrant (finition). Les travaux engagés ont consisté à évaluer les performances d'élimination par temps sec sur plusieurs périodes de 24 h sucessives, par des mesures en entrée et en sortie sur les fractions solides (MES) et liquides (dissous), accompagnées de mesures dans les boues. Une vue globale des potentiels d'élimination des micropolluants par les installations conventionnelles, et par des ouvrages plus innovants, a été obtenue. La recherche de quelques nanogrammes (milliardièmes de grammes) à quelques microgrammes (millièmes de grammes) de ces micropolluants est un défi pour les laboratoires d'analyses : techniques de mesures très pointues (chromatographie gazeuse ou liquide haute pression avec détection par spectrométrie de masse en tandem), difficultés induites par la présence de matière organique pour lesquelles les méthodes ne sont pas éprouvées. Des précautions indispensables ont été prises pour limiter la modification des concentrations des échantillons : utilisation d'échantillonneurs spécifiques réfrigérés et asservis au débit, équipés de flacons collecteurs en verre et de tuyaux en téflon, soumis à une procédure de nettoyage standardisée (acide puis acétone). Des blancs de prélèvements sont régulièrement réalisés pour vérifier la validité de la chaîne de prélèvement, et ainsi garantir la qualité des données générées. Ces points sont en discussion au sein d'un groupe de travail intitulé « Pratiques d'échantillonnage et de conditionnement en vue de la recherche de micropolluants en assainissement » (Laboratoire national de référence sur la surveillance des milieux aquatiques, AQUAREF). Les systèmes de traitement des eaux résiduaires n'ont pas été conçus avec l'objectif de traiter les micropolluants. Aussi on trouve couramment dans les eaux résiduaires brutes et traitées des substances appartenant aux familles des hydrocarbures, des solvants et détergents, des plastifiants, des organo-étains, des pesticides, des chlrorophénols, des substances pharmaceutiques, des cosmétiques, etc. La plupart des substances sont éliminées à plus de 70% par les filières biologiques. Certaines substances sont éliminées par biodégradation (triclosan, hormones estrogéniques, analgésiques) mais la plupart le sont plutôt par adsorption sur la boue (en particulier PBDEs, C10-C13 chloroalcanes, HAPs lourds ou métaux comme Al, Fe, Cu, Cr). Enfin, les substances qui ne sont presque pas affectées par le passage à travers de procédés biologiques sont les pesticides polaires (glyphosate, AMPA, diuron), certains produits pharmaceutiques (carbamazépine, diclofénac, propranolol, sotalol) et les carboxylates d'alkylphénols.

Estrogens act as endocrine disruptors and are known to be discharged into the aquatic environment via effluents from wastewater- treatment plants (WWTPs). Efficient analytical protocols are needed to identify and to quantify estrogens in wastewaters and aquatic environments in order to study their sources, levels of exposure and modes of transfer. We developed and validated a new analytical method for estrogens in water. It quantifies five estrogenic hormones and their conjugated forms at the ng/L level in rivers, WWTP influents and effluents, with satisfactory precision (relative standard deviation of within-day analytical recoveries is usually

L'objectif de ce travail est d'établir une synthèse des données existantes dans la littérature pour les métaux contenus dans les eaux résiduaires brutes et traitées et d'examiner leur rendement d'élimination au sein des filières eau des stations d'épuration domestiques. Afin de pouvoir exploiter les données de façon quantitative, nous avons conçu une base de données portant sur les 8 métaux les plus souvent cités (Hg, Cd, As, Ni, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn) et qui répertorient leurs concentrations dans les eaux résiduaires brutes et traitées ainsi que les efficacités d'élimination des procédés conventionnels d'épuration. Au total, nous avons recensé 1632 données issues de 111 publications et de plusieurs études. Après une analyse de la nature et de la qualité des données, 644 se sont avérées fiables et suffisamment étayées et donc exploitables. A partir de la base de données, nous avons pu établir des gammes de concentrations pour les métaux (fraction brute ou totale) dans les eaux usées brutes et les eaux traitées. Dans les eaux usées brutes, Cd et Hg sont les métaux présents aux concentrations les plus faibles (concentrations inférieures ou de l'ordre du µg/L) ; As, Ni et Pb sont mesurés entre 1 et 12 µg/L ; Cu et Cr entre 8 et 110 µg/L et Zn est le métal présent aux concentrations les plus élevées (jusqu'à 230 µg/L). Dans les eaux traitées, Hg et Cd sont aussi présents aux plus faibles concentrations (< 2µg/L) ; As, Ni et Pb sont mesurés entre 0,6 et 6 µg/L ; Cr et Cu entre 0,3 et 60 µg/L et Zn est présent aux concentrations les plus élevées (jusqu'à 380 µg/L). L'élimination des métaux varie de 15 à 95% suivant le procédé et le métal. Selon les données collectées dans la base de données, il semble que les traitements biologiques secondaires sont plus performants (50-90% d'élimination) que les traitements primaires (20-50% d'élimination). En revanche, les résultats de la base de données ne permettent pas de discriminer les traitements secondaires entre eux (boues activées, lits bactériens, biodisques, systèmes d'infiltration/percolation), notamment du fait du nombre insuffisant de données disponibles au final. Nous avons également comparé les gammes de concentrations obtenues et les rendements d'élimination avec les données du programme national RSDE et les résultats préliminaires du projet de recherche AMPERES. Les différences observées quant aux niveaux de concentrations moyens mesurés sont probablement dues aux différences de performances des techniques analytiques employées dans chaque cas. Cela se traduit notamment par des fréquences de quantification faibles pour les métaux présents aux plus faibles concentrations.

National audience; La technique d'extraction sur barreau SBSE (Stir bar sorptive extraction) suivie d'une désorption liquide et d'une analyse par chromatographie en phase liquide couplée à la spectrométrie de masse en tandem (SBSE-LD-LC-MSMS) a été utilisée pour la détermination de traces de pesticides et métabolites (azoxystrobine, carbendazime, chlorpyrifos, diuron, dichloroaniline, 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-méthylurée (DCPMU), linuron, diméthomorphe, flufénoxuron, fénitrothion, isoproturon, spiroxamine et tébuconazole) dans des échantillons d'eau de rivière (phase dissoute). L'étude d'optimisation de différents paramètres considérés comme prépondérants a été menée sur des échantillons d'eau dopés à différents niveaux de concentrations. Des conditions optimales d'extraction ont ainsi été définies : 3 h et 800 tr/min pour, respectivement, le temps et la vitesse d'extraction ; l'addition de 10% (M/V) de chlorure de sodium dans l'échantillon pour augmenter la force ionique du milieu et enfin 15 min de désorption sous ultrasons dans un mélange de solvants acétonitrile/méthanol (50/50, V/V). Les taux de récupération des différents pesticides varient de 10 à 83,5% suivant les caractéristiques physico-chimiques des composés. Dans ces conditions, et pour s'affranchir de ces taux de récupération, la quantification est toujours réalisée grâce à une gamme d'étalonnage extraite dans la matrice considérée. La validation de la méthode suivant les critères de la norme AFNOR T 90-210 (1999) a permis d'obtenir de bons résultats en terme de répétabilité et reproductibilité (

L'objectif du projet SIE Pesticides est d'améliorer la production des connaissances des équipes thématiques en les dotant d'outils informatiques avant-gardistes conçus spécifiquement par les équipes informatiques. Ces dernières ont en charge en outre la structuration de la connaissance produite quasiment dès sa production.

Multivariate techniques (ter Braak and Verdonschot, 1995) allow the elucidation of ecological factors, which explain most of the variation in diatom distribution. In particular, variance partitioning (Borcard et al. 1992) may help to separate different sets of environmental factors influencing diatom distribution. In this paper we use multivariate techniques and variance partitioning to elucidate the contribution of metal pollution to the structure of the diatom community. The main aim of this study was to provide analytical and statistical tools to determine the influence of metal pollution on the ecological status of fluvial systems. In order to achieve this main objective the following specific objectives were planned: first to describe the gradient of pollution and the corresponding diatom community at a regional level ; second: to obtain a good characterization of metal loads and metal availability in areas chronically exposed to low metal pollution and third: to investigate the relative contribution of different types of pollution: eutrophication and organic pollution vs. metal pollution to diatom species composition using variance partitioning multivariate analyses. In a first step, multivariate analyses were performed at a regional scale, using data provided by the Catalan Water Agency. The data set aimed to cover a large environmental gradient. Available date included a characterization of water mineralization, nutrient content, water metal concentration and inventories of diatom species from different watersheds influenced mainly by urban, agricultural and industrial activities. In a second step and due to the limited data available concerning metal pollution, a more detailed sampling was planned in the Fluvià watershed slightly impacted by agricultural, urban and small industrial activities. In this case, metal analysis techniques were improved (reducing detection limits from 10 ppb to 0.1 ppb) and the analyses of metal concentrations in biofilms and DGTs were also included.

BACKGROUND: Since biological degradation processes are known to be a major driver of the natural attenuation of pesticide residues in the environment, microbial communities adapted to pesticide biodegradation are likely to play a key environmental role in reducing pesticide exposure in contaminated ecosystems. The aim of this study was to assess the diuron-mineralising potential of microbial communities at a small-scale watershed level, including a diuron-treated vineyard (pollution source), its associated grass buffer strip (as a river protection area against pesticide runoff) and the lotic receiver hydrosystem (sediments and epilithon), by using radiorespirometry. RESULTS: Comparison of results obtained at different sampling sites (in both soil and aquatic systems) revealed the importance of diuron exposure in the adaptation of microbial communities to rapid diuron mineralisation in the vineyard but also in the contaminated grass strip and in downstream epilithic biofilms and sediments. CONCLUSION: This study provides strong suggestive evidence for high diuron biodegradation potential throughout its course, from the pollution source to the final receiving hydrosystem, and suggests that, after microbial adaptation, grass strips may represent an effective environmental tool for mineralisation and attenuation of intercepted pesticides. International audience; Polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) and semi-permeable membrane device (SPMD) are among the most commonly used passive samplers for the monitoring of organic micropollutants in water [Vrana 2005]. POCIS is used to monitor hydrophilic molecules (log Kow < 4), such as pharmaceuticals or pesticides [Alvarez 2004]. SPMD is designed for sampling hydrophobic molecules (log Kow > 2), like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) [Huckins, 1990]. The objective of the present work is to verify and take advantage of the complementarity of these two samplers to monitor molecules of moderate hydrophobicity (log Kow < 5) in freshwater systems impacted by wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) inputs. The studied molecules include 10 betablockers (acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol, nadolol, oxprenolol, propranolol, sotalol, timolol), 5 estrogenic hormones (estrone, 17a-estradiol, 17a-estradiol, estriol, 17a-ethynilestradiol) and 5 alkylphenols (4-tert-octylphenol, 4-nonylphenol, 4-nonylphenol-monoethoxylate, 4-nonylphenol-diethoxylate, 4-nonylphenoxyacetic acid). Five sampling campaigns were carried out in France: on the Saône River (November 2007), the Jalle River (March 2008), the Ardières River (June 2008), the Bourbre River and the Seine River (September 2008). POCIS and SPMD were exposed in surface waters upstream and downstream WWTP inputs, as well as in the WWTP effluent. Grab samples were periodically collected from each site during the exposure periods. Samplers were exposed between three days and three weeks in order to study the accumulation kinetics and linearity. Repeatability was checked by the exposure of triplicate samplers. We also tested in situ the benefit of using performance reference compounds (PRC). In order to recover the accumulated contaminants, the samplers were then processed, by elution of the adsorbant for POCIS and organic solvent dialysis for SPMD, and the extracts were analysed by LC-MS/MS. The results will be discussed with regards to repeatability, accumulation kinetic and linearity range, concentration factor and agreement between passive sampling and grab sampling. At last, the two samplers will be compared in terms of practical use and cost.

La base de données de l'Ifen sur les pesticides dans les eaux de surface contient plus de huit millions d'analyses. Pour interpréter de manière plus approfondie ces données, des méthodes ont été testées en se basant sur un regroupement géographique des données au sein d'entités homogènes. Le découpage utilisé a été celui des hydro-écorégions de niveau 1. Après avoir étudié l'évolution intra et inter annuelle des détections par molécule et par région et l'avoir reliée aux pratiques agricoles, une comparaison entre molécules et régions a été testée. Elle a permis d'aboutir à l'identification de groupes de molécules en fonction de la répartition spatiale de leurs détections. Des hypothèses sur la vulnérabilité des hydro-écorégions et sur l'influence des propriétés des molécules ont été formulées mais n'ont pu être validées.

International audience; With the aim of improving the quality of the effluent from a waste stabilization pond (WSP) different types of vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) and intermittent sand filters (ISFs) were tested at a pilot plant in Aurignac (France). The effectiveness of each design at upgrading the pond effluent was studied over a period of 2 years. Physicochemical parameters were monitored by taking composite samples over 24 h and grab samples every week. The hydraulic behaviour of the filters was studied using (NaCl) tracer tests and monitoring the infiltration rate. This paper describes the influence on the performance of the beds of: (a) the characteristics of the medium (type of sand, depth, and presence of Phragmites); (b) feed modes; and (c) the presence of an algae clogging layer. The study demonstrates the viability of VFCWs and ISFs as means of upgrading effluent from WSPs. For hydraulic loads (HL) of up to 80 cm/day, both technologies effectively retain algae, complete organic matter degradation, and nitrify the pond effluent. The presence of plants did not significantly affect the performance of the filters although it was important in terms of maintenance. The deeper filters presented better removals for all the parameter tested, due to higher hydraulic detention times (HDTs). The dosing regime and resting period duration all affected the hydraulic performance and purification efficiency of the filters.

This work presents a new sensor for ammonium determination based on interdigitated conductometric thin-film planar electrodes. It was fabricated by including nonactin in a plasticised poly(vinyl chloride) membrane deposited on the sensitive area of the transducer. The effects of pH, buffer concentration, the interferences of Na+, K+ and Ca2+ ions, the effect of ionic strength and of temperature were investigated. The linear working range and sensitivity of the biosensor were also determined. The sensitivity of the ammonium detection was around 6.2 S M-1 [image omitted] and the detection limit was 2 10-5 M. The biosensor exhibits the advantages of a simple fabrication procedure, good sensor-to-sensor reproducibility, wide dynamic range and good storage stability (12 weeks).

Issu du programme ANR PRECODD 2005 (écotechnologies et développement durable), le projet AMPERES - analyse des micropolluants prioritaires et émergents dans les rejets et les eaux de surface - s'est attaché à l'étude des micropolluants dans les eaux usées urbaines et les boues en période de temps sec. Ce projet de quatre années (2006-2009) a conduit à l'évaluation des performances d'élimination des filières d'épuration conventionnelles pour les eaux et les boues, ainsi que de certaines filières avancées pour le traitement de l'eau. The present study aims at optimising the nitrification and denitrification phases at intermittently aerated process (activated sludge) removing nitrogen from municipal wastewater. The nitrogen removal performance recorded at 22 intermittently aerated plants was compared to the results obtained from the simulations given by the widely used ASM1. It is shown that simulations with a single value for the heterotrophic yield with any electron acceptor over-predict the nitrate concentration in the effluent of treatment plants. The reduction of this coefficient by 20% for anoxic conditions reduces the nitrate concentration by 10 g N·m-3. It significantly improves the accuracy of the predictions of nitrate concentrations in treatedeffluents compare to real data. Simulations with dual values (aerobic and anoxic conditions) for heterotrophic yield (modified ASM1) were then used to determine the practical daily aerobic time interval to meet a given nitrogen discharge objective. Finally, to support design decisions, the relevance of a pre-denitrification configuration in front of an intermittently aerated tank was studied. It is shown that when the load of BOD5 is below the conventional design value, a small contribution of the anoxic zone to nitrate removal occurs, except for over-aerated plants. When plants receive a higher load of BOD5, the modified ASM1 suggests that the anoxic zone has a higher contribution to nitrogen removal, for both correctly and over-aerated plants.

From up- to downstream, we observed a gradient of trophic (mainly orthophosphate) and diuron pollution. Biofilm communities were allowed to settle on glass slides for 4 or 8 weeks at each site. After a 4-week colonisation some samples from the two contaminated downstream sites were transferred upstream to evaluate their restoration trajectories. Periphytic communities were characterised through biomass accrual and qualitative taxonomic identifications: brown algae always dominated. From up- to downstream, periphytic biomass and species richness decreased; the samples transferred upstream recovered quite well, most descriptors reaching a level comparable to that of the communities grown for 8 weeks at the pristine site. The taxonomic composition of the samples varied between dates and along the gradient. The communities transferred upstream did not recover a pristine structure but the increase in diversity, associated with the settlement of sensitive species, suggested elevated resilience potential.

Ce document compare sur plusieurs points précis les différents documents et guides techniques utilisés en France par les donneurs d'ordre en vue du prélèvement des sédiments pour la surveillance chimique en milieu continental. Les points communs et les divergences des prescriptions présentées dans ces documents, notamment dans les cahiers des charges des agences de l'eau, sont détaillés. Des recommandations sont ensuite formulées en vue de l'harmonisation des pratiques sur plusieurs points : fréquence et période d'échantillonnage, choix des sites et des points de prélèvement, mesures complémentaires à effectuer (COT et granulométrie), choix de l'appareil de prélèvement, flacons à utiliser et transport des échantillons. Il n'a pas été possible de proposer de recommandations définitives d'une part, pour l'épaisseur de sédiment à prélever, et d'autre part, pour la fraction à analyser et les méthodologies d'interprétation des résultats, questions sur lesquelles il serait nécessaire d'effectuer une étude plus détaillée. En ce qui concerne l'épaisseur à prélever, la plupart des documents s'accordent sur une épaisseur prélevée soit de 2-3 cm, soit de 5 cm pour les cours d'eau. Des paysages agricoles aux impacts sur les milieux aquatiques

The use of buffer zones (BZ) as a tool for limiting the transfer of phosphorus from catchments towards drainage networks involves methods that form part of what are known as mitigation options. These methods are intermediate between curative and preventive approaches, with the latter tending to address the problem upstream. Mitigation methods function by limiting or reducing the harmful effects, for example, by intercepting the transfer of pollutants, as in the case of phosphorus. The buffer zones are made up of grassland or woodland (grass strips, meadows, hedges, thickets, etc.) that intercept flows coming from arable land. In this way, buffer zones contribute to limiting the contamination of waters by the various pollutants - including phosphorus - that are associated with these different flows. Since the dynamic behaviour of this element is closely associated with runoff and suspended matter, this article first of all addresses the role of buffer zones in relation to the movements of water and particulate transport. Buffer zones are generally characterized by high permeability and hydraulic roughness, which allows them to reduce significantly the flow of runoff and, consequently, the transported solid load. The capacity of buffer zones to intercept and subsequently retain phosphorus arises directly from their physical properties. it also depends on the form, dissolved or particulate, of the transferred P and the particular characteristics of the P cycle (storage, release, bio-assimilation). According to experimental data, buffer zones are areas of high retention capacity, that is more pronounced for particulate phosphorus (generally more abundant) than for dissolved phosphorus. The limits of this effectiveness are specified. In particular, the problems arising from the "conservative" behaviour of total phosphorus imply that its partial release is inevitable in the long term. Lastly, we present two important practical aspects for the setting up of buffer zones: their localization in the catchment area and their size. From this presentation, we can conclude that buffer zones cannot offer a long-term solution to limit the transfer of phosphorus towards surface waters: such an effect is only likely to be achieved by controlling the factors of erosive runoff and limiting the P content of the soil. However, in view of the great conservatism in agro-systems and the time taken to change farming practices, buffer zones may still prove very useful in the short and medium term., Les zones tampons, herbacées ou boisées (bandes enherbées, prairies, haies, bosquets, interceptent les écoulements provenant des parcelles cultivées et contribuent ainsi à limiter la contamination des eaux par les divers polluants qui leur sont associés, dont le phosphore. La dynamique de cet élément étant étroitement associée au ruissellement et aux matières en suspension, l'article aborde tout d'abord le rôle des zones tampons vis à vis des mouvements de l'eau et du transport particulaire. La forte perméabilité et la rugosité hydraulique qui caractérisent généralement les zones tampons sont à l'origine de leur capacité à réduire significativement le volume et le débit du ruissellement et, en conséquence, la charge solide transportée. La capacité des zones tampons à intercepter puis retenir le phosphore découle directement de ces propriétés physiques. Elle dépend également de la forme, dissoute ou particulaire, du P transféré et des particularité du cycle de cet élément (stockage, relargage, bioassimilation). Enfin, deux aspects pratiques importants de la mise en oeuvre des zones tampons sont présentés : leur localisation dans le bassin versant et leur dimensionnement. A l'issu de cette présentation il est possible d'affirmer que les zones tampons ne peuvent constituer une solution à long terme pour limiter les transferts de phosphore vers les eaux de surface : seule la maîtrise des facteurs de ruissellement érosif, et la limitation de la teneur en P du sol sont susceptibles de jouer ce rôle. Cependant, l'inertie de l'agro-système et des systèmes d'exploitation vis à vis d'une telle action est suffisamment importante pour que les zones tampons puissent se révéler très utiles à court ou moyen terme.

We created a database in order to quantitatively assess the occurrence and removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). From 117 scientific publications, we compiled 6641 data covering 184 PPCPs. Data included the concentrations of PPCPs in WWTP influents and effluents, their removal efficiency and their loads to the aquatic environment. The first outputs of our database allowed to identify the most investigated PPCPs in WWTPs and the most persistent ones, and to obtain reliable and quantitative values on their concentrations, frequency of detection and removal efficiency in WWTPs. We were also able to compare various processes and pointed out activated sludge with nitrogen treatment and membrane bioreactor as the most efficient ones., Nous avons conçu une base de données afin d'évaluer l'occurrence et l'efficacité d'élimination des composés pharmaceutiques et cosmétiques dans les stations d'épuration. Nous avons répertorié 6641 données concernant 184 composés, issues de 117 publications scientifiques. L'exploitation de ces données a permis d'une part, d'identifier les composés les plus étudiés et d'autre part, de déterminer des valeurs fiables (i) de fréquences de quantification, (ii) de concentrations dans la phase dissoute des eaux résiduaires urbaines (influents) et des eaux épurées (effluents) et (iii) de rendements d'élimination de ces composés dans les stations d'épuration (R). L'analyse des données a également permis de confirmer une meilleure efficacité de traitement de ces substances par les stations d'épuration biologique fonctionnant à faible charge.

The initial reporting of the water framework directive (WFD) on the characterization of the river basin and analysis on pressures and impacts, as well as reporting on monitoring programmes give the first evidence about the concentrations of priority pollutants in different water basins, as well as the risk of non-achievement of good status. Sources of pollutants in urban areas are various: atmospheric, rain runoff, industrial and craft activities, etc. Several monitoring programmes are in progress to evaluate fluxes from different sources. They generally focus on a specific source. Results bring acute diagnosis but that generally cannot be extended at the water basin scale. Identifying sources and fluxes of priority and emerging substances to aquatic systems should enable at a global basin scale to determine the most efficient measures to control and reduce loads in order to reach WFD objectives. Several French and European research projects develop new tools to improve the elimination of pollutants by wastewater treatment plants, as well as new source control strategies for the reduction of priority and emerging substances emissions., L'état des lieux réalisé pour la Directive cadre sur l'eau et les résultats des programmes de surveillance donnent aujourd'hui les premières indications sur les niveaux de concentrations des polluants prioritaires dans les différents bassins hydrographiques, ainsi que sur les risques de non atteinte du bon état. Les sources de polluants en milieu urbain sont multiples : atmosphérique, ruissellement des eaux de pluies, activités industrielle et artisanale, particuliers, etc. Plusieurs programmes de mesure sont en cours pour tenter d'évaluer les apports en provenance de ces différentes sources. Du fait de la complexité des apports et des transferts vers le milieu récepteur, ces programmes sont le plus souvent ciblés sur un type de source particulier. Ils apportent généralement des diagnostics pointus mais pas forcement généralisable à l'échelle d'un bassin versant. La connaissance des différentes sources et des flux de substances prioritaires et émergentes rejetés vers les milieux aquatiques doit permettre, à l'échelle globale du bassin versant, de déterminer les stratégies les plus pertinentes de contrôle et de réduction des apports pour atteindre les objectifs de la directive cadre. Des projets de recherche français et européen développent des outils de diagnostic visant à l'amélioration de l'élimination des substances polluantes dans les stations d'épuration et de nouveaux concepts de lutte à la source pour la réduction des émissions des substances polluantes.

La raréfaction de l'eau conduit bien souvent les pays à se tourner vers des modes d'approvisionnement alternatifs. En France, l'état de pénurie est loin d'être déclaré. De plus, une absence de réglementation n'encourage pas le recours à cette utilisation et justifie ainsi l'existence de seulement quelques cas sporadiques. Dans ce contexte, il a été demandé au Cemagref d'évaluer, à partir de connaissances issues de bibliographie nationales et internationales les technologies en regard des différents objectifs sanitaires. La 1ère étape de ce rapport consiste à cibler les paramètres d'intérêt en réutilisation des eaux. Les recherches ont permis de mettre en lumière que la bactériologie, les micropolluants organiques et minéraux ainsi que les sels dissous, étaient les principaux paramètres à considérer, vu les risques qu'ils présentaient pour l'Homme et l'Environnement. Apres un rapide tour d'horizons des recommandations internationales et françaises existantes, l'étude se poursuit par l'identification des technologies de traitement permettant la minimisation voire l'élimination du risque présenté par chacun des paramètres suscités. Parmi les techniques identifiées, les procédés de désinfection et de filtration sont les plus à même de répondre aux exigences de qualité préconisées par les recommandations sanitaires françaises. Le travail s'est clôturé par la mise en relation des différents usages et de la qualité requise, avec les filières de traitement possibles. Cette dernière partie est principalement orientée vers les usages agricoles et urbains qui sont les emplois les plus susceptibles de se développer en France.

International audience; French legislation requires, the control of private on-site sanitation systems by local authorities. This will result in a large increase of the quantity of sludge from septic tanks to be treated. Nevertheless, large wastewater treatment plants are not systematically able to treat this sludge because they may have reached their nominal load or they are not so numerous in rural zone to avoid too long transportation. The study concerns both, the feasibility of sludge reed beds devoted to the treatment of septage and the assessment of a simultaneous treatment with aerated sludge. The experiments have been carried out on eight pilot-scale drying reed beds (2m²) planted with Phragmites australis. Two filtration layers of either vegetal compost or sand were tested. The study is focused on the commissioning period (first vegetative year) with a loading rate of 30 kgSS.m-2.yr-1. According to these operational conditions, dewatering efficiencies reached approx. 30% DM during summer but less than 20%DM in winter for each filtration layer and sludge. High removal efficiencies, with an average of 96%, 92% and 89% for SS, COD and TKN respectively, were achieved with septage whereas they were lower for the mixture of aerated sludge and septage. The dewaterability of septage and its filtration behaviour were assessed by several parameters (Capillary Suction Time, bound water) which may be some interesting tools for an optimised loading strategy.

Pour les hormones estrogéniques, l'abattement dans la phase dissoute est généralement supérieur à 70% quelle que soit la molécule. Concernant les bêtabloquants, l'abattement est variable et dépend de la molécule : il est par exemple systématiquement supérieur à 70% pour le nadolol, alors qu'il dépasse rarement 50% pour le propranolol et le sotalol. Concernant les traitements tertiaire étudiés (décanteur rapide, lagune, biofiltre nitrifiant), les premiers résultats montrent une efficacité du biofiltre nitrifiant pour les estrogènes alors que pour les bêtabloquants l'efficacité de ces traitements n'est pas avérée.

International audience; This study reports on the occurrence and behaviour of eight pesticides and metabolites in a small stream draining a vineyard watershed in the Beaujolais area (France). Punctual and automatic sampling strategies were achieved along the river during one hydrological year in order to assess the spatial and temporal variability of pesticide concentrations and loads in the river. Flood events were also monitored in order to evaluate the role of hydrological conditions on pesticide mobilisation. Results show the strong temporal and spatial variability of pesticide concentrations in the river in relation with the periods of pesticide application. A large mobilisation of pesticides was observed during floods (representing more than 80% of the total pesticide load in August 2007); these results highlight the major role of floods in the transport of pesticides. The evaluation of pesticide loads using different sampling strategies (i.e., weekly and monthly punctual; automatic sampling for floods and for weekly composite sampling) and methods of calculation, showed that punctual sampling largely underestimates pesticides fluxes transiting through the river whereas the weekly composite sampling appears as more representative.

International audience; Small rivers draining agricultural areas are particularly exposed to pesticides inputs. Protective systems (such as buffer zones) are seldom used. Although pesticide interception by grass strips has generally been proven effective, little is known about the fate of intercepted pesticides. Pesticide biodegradation (real or potential) in lotic receiving waters has also been poorly studied until now. We assessed here the diuron mineralisation potential of microbial communities at a watershed level, including in a diuron-treated soil collecting within a vineyard (pollution source), its associated grass buffer strip (as river protection area against pesticide runoff) and the lotic receiving system (sediment and biofilm) by estimating [ring-14C]labeled diuron mineralisation potential. Our results showed that both soil and riverine bacterial communities of wine-growing watershed regularly exposed to diuron could assume a critical role in its degradation. By comparing soil, upstream and downstream microbial aquatic samples, it appeared clearly that previous diuron exposures favoured the adaptation and the stimulation of diuron-degrading bacterial communities. The grass buffer strip had a mineralisation potential relatively similar to the vineyard soil suggesting that that, in addition to their role in pesticide physicochemical retention, they could indeed represent an effective biological purifier system for chemicals. The downstream aquatic biofilms also exhibited mineralisation potentials typical from microbial communities adapted to diuron degradation, revealing that, depending on the pesticide retention time, aquatic microorganisms could probably assume a critical role in natural attenuation of pesticides in contaminated rivers.

International audience; Par ses objectifs d'atteinte et de conservation du bon état écologique et chimique des eaux, la Directive Européenne sur l'Eau (DCE) nécessite de fait la mise en place d'outils pour l'évaluation et la surveillance des milieux aquatiques et du résultat des actions entreprises pour atteindre les objectifs. Plusieurs problématiques nouvelles sont à considérer dans des délais contraints, comme le dosage de polluants à des niveaux de concentration très faibles, l'adaptation et le développement des méthodes de bioindication. De plus, la mise sur le marché de nouveaux produits et de nouvelles molécules rend nécessaire la mise au point continue de nouvelles techniques de détection des molécules ou de leurs résidus de dégradation dans les milieux aquatiques récepteurs. Les connaissances sur l'impact écologique de ces polluants dans les milieux aquatiques sont insuffisantes, et la vision nouvelle de l'évaluation écologique entraîne la refonte du principe de certains indices utilisés jusqu'ici, ainsi que le développement des approches corrélant pressions et impacts. D'autre part, les notions de qualité ou d'incertitude, déjà bien intégrées dans les domaines de l'analyse physique et chimique, n'étaient qu'embryonnaires en hydrobiologie. Ces approches doivent maintenant être généralisées. AQUAREF, le laboratoire national de référence de l'eau et des milieux aquatiques, a été créé à l'initiative du ministère chargé de l'écologie et lancé officiellement le 31 mai 2007. Il a pour mission générale l'appui aux pouvoirs publics sur les aspects techniques et scientifiques liés à la mise en ½uvre de la DCE en France, ainsi que d'être interlocuteur des instances techniques européennes ou des autres états membres. Aquaref est un consortium regroupant cinq établissements publics de recherche directement impliqués dans les démarches liées à la DCE : BRGM, LNE, INERIS, IFREMER et CEMAGREF. Les objectifs se déclinent autour des 2 axes « chimie » et « biologie », avec les principaux thèmes suivants : méthodes pour les substances visées par la DCE dans les eaux, sédiments, biotes et boues ; méthodologie de la bioindication (phytoplancton, invertébrés benthiques, diatomées et phytobenthos, macrophytes, poissons) ; amélioration de la comparabilité des données issues de la surveillance des eaux ; élaboration de prescriptions techniques relatives aux opérations de surveillance ; mise en place des réseaux de surveillance, exploitation et valorisation des données ; relations avec les instances européennes et groupes de travail techniques nationaux et internationaux qui requièrent des experts ; valorisation et transfert des résultats des projets européens au niveau national ; besoins émergents (veille scientifique), thèmes prioritaires et développements scientifiques et techniques ; réseau de laboratoires européens. Aquaref constitue à la fois un « guichet unique » pour optimiser les réponses fournies aux pouvoirs publics et une plateforme commune de réflexion et d'action permettant une synergie entre les cinq établissements membres, autour de thèmes fédérateurs liés à la problématique de la DCE.

National audience; Les derniers textes réglementaires traduisent le formidable enjeu que représente l'objectif de la restauration du bon état écologique et chimique des milieux d'ici 2015. Celui-ci passe par une réduction drastique des pollutions en micro-polluants organiques et minéraux rejetés dans les masses d'eau par les divers exutoires ponctuels et diffus. L'état des lieux pour la DCE donne aujourd'hui les premières indications sur l'occurrence de certains polluants et sur l'ampleur de la contamination dans les différents bassins hydrographiques. Cependant, si la connaissance de la contamination des milieux aquatiques s'est améliorée avec l'intégration de substances toxiques au suivi du réseau national de bassin, la connaissance des sources reste insuffisante. Afin de pouvoir établir des stratégies et actions à mettre en ½uvre qui soient viables d'un point de vue technico-économique, que se soit en termes de surveillance, de réduction à la source, ou de traitement, il est primordial de mener des programmes de mesures sur les sources des micro-polluants et des diagnostics réalistes sur l'efficacité des ouvrages de traitement existants, ainsi que de développer des méthodologies permettant d'intégrer ces différents apports à l'échelle du bassin versant.

National audience; Le projet AMPERES a pour objectifs de mesurer la composition en micro-polluants des eaux usées et traitées et de quantifier l'efficacité d'élimination de différentes filières d'épuration vis-à-vis de ces contaminants. Les travaux consistent tout d'abord à développer et valider des méthodologies d'échantillonnage et d'analyse des substances prioritaires et émergentes (substances pharmaceutiques et hormones) dans les eaux et les boues de stations d'épuration. Les performances d'élimination sur 24 heures de différentes installations de traitement domestique sont évaluées par des mesures en entrée et en sortie sur les fractions particulaire et dissoute, accompagnés de mesures dans les boues et dans les retours en tête. Les résultats permettent d'obtenir une vue globale des potentiels d'élimination des micropolluants par les installations conventionnelles et par des ouvrages plus innovants (boues activées, biofiltration, filtres plantés de roseaux, bioréacteurs à membranes immergées, traitement tertiaire oxydant ou filtrant).

National audience; Le PNSE de 2004 2008 demandait aux agences de l'eau de faire des investigations dans ce nouveau domaine. Des études de recherche de ces substances, et pour certaines de leurs métabolites, ont été conduites de manière spécifique selon les bassins. Les trois types de milieu ont été prospectés : les cours d'eau, les eaux souterraines et les estuaires. Selon les partenaires, des investigations plus poussées ont été opérées sur les eaux de consommation brutes ou distribuées, et sur les rejets des stations d'épuration urbaines. Le choix des molécules repose bien évidemment sur leur pertinence en matière de quantité utilisée (et excrétée), mais également sur leur persistance dans le milieu et la disponibilité de méthodes d'analyse à des seuils très bas (de l'ordre du nanogramme/L). Des spécificités ont été développées selon les laboratoires impliqués. Dans les rejets des collectivités se détache un panel de substances assez constant quels que soient les sites (psychotropes, analgésiques, hypolipémiants), avec des concentrations de l'ordre du microgramme/l. Pour les hormones la gamme s'étend du non quantifiable à quelques ng/L.

This work deals with the fate of 17 xenobiotics (metals, pesticides, alkylphenols and pharmaceuticals) through six full-scale activated sludge treatment systems, analyzed with mass spectrometry detection techniques. The change of daily concentrations in wastewater, the removal performances on the soluble phase, the influence of operating parameters of the process, and the contribution of sludge dewatering system were studied., Le travail présenté porte sur le comportement de 17 substances (familles des métaux, pesticides, alkylphenols et pharmaceutiques) au travers du procédé boues activées (6 stations réelles). Les substances ont été quantifiées avec des méthodes de spectrophotométrie de masse. La modification spatiale et temporelle des concentrations des substances dans les eaux usées, les performances de retrait du compartiment soluble en fonctionnement normal, l'influence de paramètres opérationnels de la filière eau du procédé, et le devenir dans la filière boue sont les quatre points qui ont été examinés.

International audience; In order to estimate the expectable enhanced biological phosphorus removal of a wastewater, two parameters are determined: the volatile fatty acids, and the ability to produce them in anaerobic conditions. Because volatile fatty acids are sensitive to modification after sampling, grab samples are mainly characterized. The aims of the present work are to investigate the hourly variations of these two parameters for wastewater, and to study the ability of a 24h-composite automatic sampler to provide them. The consequences of the oxygen input, acidogenesis start-up, and anaerobic consumption were quantified. Two conventional composite sampling techniques were compared leading to a 15% difference. The investigations carried out for two wastewater have shown significant hourly variations around the daily average value with concentrations 3 times higher during 3 hours long.

International audience; The ESPRIT collaborative research project (2007-2010) aims to contribute to the identification, evaluation and characterisation of 41 priority substances transported by stormwater, in two experimental sites in Lyon, France (one combined system and one separate system). At the outlet of both catchments, monitoring campaigns are carried out for a large number of storm events and for some dry weather periods. Most of the campaigns will deal with event mean concentrations, and a limited number of pollutographs will also be measured. In both sites, specific prototypes collect both dry atmospheric fallout and rain water, allowing estimating the dry and wet contributions of the atmosphere to the stormwater pollutant loads. In a first phase, screenings of the 41 substances will be performed. In a second phase, more accurate specific analyses for some substances will be carried out if necessary. A special effort will be devoted to evaluate the event variability of concentrations and loads. Models will be developed to extrapolate results to annual and multi-annual time scales and, if possible, to un-monitored catchments with similar characteristics.

Si les niveaux de rejet de cette filière sont excellents en ce qui concerne la pollution carbonée et la nitrification, les performances en termes de rétention du phosphore sont minimes sur le long terme et parfois insuffisantes. Différentes voies visant à accroître la rétention du phosphore existent, parmi lesquelles l'usage de matériaux spécifiques.

The distribution, partition and speciation of mercury (Hg) were studied along the redox gradient of an anthropogenically perturbed tropical estuary, the Sinnamary Estuary in French Guiana. This system is a partially mixed estuary characterized by an anoxic freshwater end-member, while the marine end member consists of the Amazon Plume. The set up of an artificial oxygenation system in the anoxic freshwater end-member generates sharp gradients of major chemical species (iron, sulfides, etc.) coupled with intense organic matter (OM) turnover. The coexistence of oxygenated waters and dissolved sulfides in an organic rich environment depicts the Upper Sinnamary Estuary (USE: part of Sinnamary Estuary under the tidal influence but upstream of the salt intrusion) as a potential site for Hg methylation. The concentrations of all mercurial species (HgT) in the unfiltered samples (HgTUNF), in the dissolved (HgTD) and particulate (HgTP) phases of the USE average 11 ± 3, 6 ± 2 and 5 ± 3 (i.e. 600 ± 200 pmol g -1 ) pmol L -1 respectively. Average concentrations of monomethylmercury (MMHg) in the unfiltered (MMHgUNF), dissolved (MMHgD) and particulate (MMHgP) phases were 3.7 ± 1.0, 2.0 ± 0.9 and 1.8 ± 1.2 (i.e. 220 ± 130 pmol g -1 ) pmol L -1 respectively. Water oxygenation and sulfides concentrations emerged to play a critical role in controlling MMHg levels. Additionally, iron cycling, acid-base mechanisms, and edoxdependent processes were involved in the MMHg partitioning between phases. Overall, the USE constitutes a biogeochemical reactor that gathers partitioning and methylation processes. The permanent MMHg inputs from the anoxic freshwater end-member combined with the intense endogenous Hg methylation ensures high MMHg levels in both dissolved and particulate phases. To illustrate, the USE exports 60 ± 20 % more MMHgUNF than it imports: 5.5 ± 0.7 vs. 3.5 ± 1.2 kg y -1

National audience; Le projet AMPERES a pour objectifs de mesurer la composition en micro-polluants des eaux usées et traitées et de quantifier l'efficacité d'élimination de différentes filières d'épuration vis-à-vis de ces contaminants. Les travaux consistent tout d'abord à développer et valider des méthodologies d'échantillonnage et d'analyse des substances prioritaires et émergentes (substances pharmaceutiques et hormones) dans les eaux et les boues de stations d'épuration. Les performances d'élimination sur 24 heures de différentes installations de traitement domestique sont évaluées par des mesures en entrée et en sortie sur les fractions particulaire et dissoute, accompagnés de mesures dans les boues et dans les retours en tête. Les résultats permettent d'obtenir une vue globale des potentiels d'élimination des micropolluants par les installations conventionnelles et par des ouvrages plus innovants (boues activées, biofiltration, filtres plantés de roseaux, bioréacteurs à membranes immergées, traitement tertiaire oxydant ou filtrant).

National audience; L'objectif de cette étude, initiée en 2006, vise d'une part à évaluer les concentrations et les flux de pesticides transitant dans un petit cours d'eau de bassin versant viticole du Beaujolais (bassin versant de la Morcille) et d'autre part, à définir une stratégie d'échantillonnage adaptée pour permettre une évaluation fiable de l'exposition aux contaminants en vue de la mise en ½uvre de la DCE.

International audience; Considering that reliable up-to-date information is limited even for conventional wastewater treatment plants, the contamination profiles of 14 municipal treatment plants are about to be measured, as part of the AMPERES Project, with the determination of the concentrations of 28 pharmaceuticals and 5 hormones analyzed on dissolved and particulate phases. This paper reports preliminary results recorded for a selection of these pollutants quantified in six full-scale activated sludge process (ASP) during 2 or 3 successive 24h-periods. The influent, effluent and return of sludge dewatering were sampled with refrigerated automated samplers equipped with Teflon tubings and glass containers. Strict procedures of cleaning, sampling and field blanks were established and carried out.

International audience; Flowering plants possess self-incompatibility (SI) mechanisms that promote outbreeding and thereby increase their genetic diversity. In the self-incompatible Brassicaceae, recognition and rejection of self-pollen is based on a receptor-ligand interaction between male and female SI determinants. A transmembrane receptor kinase (S locus Receptor Kinase, SRK) determines the SI specificity in stigmatic cells, whereas a pollen coat-localized ligand (S locus Cysteine-Rich, SCR) determines the SI specificity in pollen. During recent years, major advances have been made in the understanding of the molecular basis of self-pollen recognition by stigmatic cells. In this review, we will focus on evolutionary aspects of the SI system in Brassicaceae. We will describe how the study of the molecular aspect of SI, not only in the historical Brassica model but also in Arabidopsis species, has contributed to highlight certain aspects of evolution of SI in the Brassicaceae.

International audience; During the last fifty years, consumption of estrogenic compounds (natural hormone or synthetic analogue) for human medicine contraception, management of menopausal and post-menopausal syndrome, physiological replacement therapy in deficiency states and treatment of prostate and cancers) and animal farming (developers of single-sex populations of fishes in aquaculture) has considerably increased. Estrogenic compounds are usually not entirely metabolized and reach aquatic environment mainly via effluents of wastewater treatment plants. The lack of knowledge on toxicity of these compounds and their impact on ecosystems and human health has raised public concern about their occurrence in the environment. For this reason, highly sensitive and selective analytical method is needed to identify and quantify these emerging contaminants in various environmental compartments. The aim of this communication is to show the different steps for validation of an analytical method for five estrogenic compound in aquatic environments (estrone [E1], 17aestradiol [17a-E2], 17bestradiol [17b-E2], 17aethynylestradiol [EE2] and estriol [E3]) chosen because of their strong endocrine-disrupting potency in river and wastewater. The sample pretreatment consists of an extraction on Oasis HLB cartridges followed by purification on Florisil cartridges. Four stable isotopically labelled estrogenic compounds were used as surrogate standards to overcome matrix effects during the quantitation. Liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray tandem mass spectrometry is performed in the multiple-reaction monitoring mode and molecule identity is confirmed by two quantitation and confirmation transitions according to the EEC decision 2002/657/CE. Stability of these compounds in extracts from Oasis HLB (stored at ambient temperature during 3 days) or in mobile phase (stored at 18°C during 1 month) have been verified. Yields and repeatability have been evaluated in three kinds of matrices at two contamination levels by quintuplate analysis. Yields higher than 75% (except for 17a-E2 at low level: in the range of 60%) and relative standard deviation lower than 20% (except for E3 in influent: at 36%) have been obtained. Reproducibility has also been studied from real matrices. Method reaches limits of quantification around 1 ng/L in waters from rivers and wastewater treatment plants. Specificity has been statistically verified for the five analytes, thus we can consider that matrix effects are corrected by the use of deuterated surrogates.
