Auxin phytohormones control most aspects of plant development through a complex and interconnected signaling network. In the presence of auxin, AUXIN/INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID (AUX/IAA) transcriptional repressors are targeted for degradation by the SKP1-CULLIN1-F-BOX (SCF) ubiquitin-protein ligases containing TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESISTANT 1/AUXIN SIGNALING F-BOX (TIR1/AFB). CULLIN1-neddylation is required for SCFTIR1/AFB functionality, as exemplified by mutants deficient in the NEDD8-activating enzyme subunit AUXIN-RESISTANT 1 (AXR1). Here, we report a chemical biology screen that identifies small molecules requiring AXR1 to modulate plant development. We selected four molecules of interest, RubNeddin 1 to 4 (RN1 to -4), among which RN3 and RN4 trigger selective auxin responses at transcriptional, biochemical, and morphological levels. This selective activity is explained by their ability to consistently promote the interaction between TIR1 and a specific subset of AUX/IAA proteins, stimulating the degradation of particular AUX/IAA combinations. Finally, we performed a genetic screen using RN4, the RN with the greatest potential for dissecting auxin perception, which revealed that the chromatin remodeling ATPase BRAHMA is implicated in auxin-mediated apical hook development. These results demonstrate the power of selective auxin agonists to dissect auxin perception for plant developmental functions, as well as offering opportunities to discover new molecular players involved in auxin responses.

- Abstract
We present a framework to assess the relative cognitive cost of alternative representational systems for problem solving. The framework consists of 19 cognitive properties of representational systems, which are distributed across 4 dimensions(registration, semantic encoding, inference, and solution) and three scales of granularity (symbol, expression, and sub-representations). It examines components and processes spanning the internal mental representation and external physicaldisplay, and also addresses heterogenous representations of problems. We provide functions to evaluate the cost of eachcognitive property by examining, for example, types of matches between display symbols and concepts, the arity ofrelations, or the depth of solution trees. The cognitive costs for each property are combined to estimate the overallcognitive cost, and hence the relative effectiveness, of a representation. The frameworks development is motivated byour goal of engineering an automated system that will select representations suited to specific classes of problems forindividual users.

Food is an integral part of our life and what and how much we eat crucially affects our health. Our food choices largely depend on how we perceive certain characteristics of food, such as whether it is healthy, delicious or if it qualifies as a salad. But these perceptions differ from person to person and one person's "single lettuce leaf" might be another person's "side salad". Studying how food is perceived in relation to what it actually is typically involves a laboratory setup. Here we propose to use recent advances in image recognition to tackle this problem. Concretely, we use data for 1.9 million images from Instagram from the US to look at systematic differences in how a machine would objectively label an image compared to how a human subjectively does. We show that this difference, which we call the "perception gap", relates to a number of health outcomes observed at the county level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that image recognition is being used to study the "misalignment" of how people describe food images vs. what they actually depict., Comment: This is a pre-print of our paper accepted to appear in the Proceedings of 2017 International World Wide Web Conference (WWW'17)

The PADME experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE Beam-Test Facility (BTF) aims at searching for invisible decays of the dark photon by measuring the final state missing mass in the process $e^+e^- \to \gamma+ A'$, with $A'$ undetected. The measurement requires the determination of the 4-momentum of the recoil photon, performed using a homogeneous, highly segmented BGO crystals calorimeter. We report the results of the test of a 5$\times$5 crystals prototype performed with an electron beam at the BTF in July 2016.

Despite the great success of the Standard Model of particle physics the nature of Dark Matter still remains unclear. Recently, the idea of the existence of a hidden sector coupling only weakly with the ordinary matter was revitalized and gained popularity. A simple mediator between the hidden and the visible sector could be a vector particle of a new gauge interaction, the so called dark photon. Numerous of activities were initiated to probe its parameter space. The present results and the foreseen experiments aimed to search for dark photons in few directions are reviewed and discussed., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, Invited talk at Vulcano 2016 workshop "Frontier Objects in Astrophysics and Particle Physics", to appear in Frascati Physics Series Vol. 64 (2016)

The measurement of $BR(K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu})$ with 10% precision by the NA62 experiment requires extreme background suppression. The Small Angle Calorimeter aims to provide an efficient veto for photons flying at angles down to zero with respect to the kaon flight direction. The initial prototype was upgraded and tested at the Beam Test Facility of the DA$\Phi$NE Linac at Frascati. The energy resolution and the efficiency were measured and are presented., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. We construct a category $\mathcal{C}_R$ of fractions $X/G$, where $G$ is a finite group and $X$ is a finite $G$-set, and with morphisms given by $R$-linear combinations of spans of bisets. This category is an additive, symmetric monoidal and self-dual category, with a Krull-Schmidt decomposition for objects. We show that $\mathcal{C}_R$ is equivalent to the additive completion of the biset category and that the category of biset functors over $R$ is equivalent to the category of $R$-linear functors from $\mathcal{C}_R$ to $R$-Mod. We also show that the restriction of one of these functors to a certain subcategory of $\mathcal{C}_R$ is a fused Mackey functor.

Given a weighted digraph D, finding the longest simple path is well known to be NP-hard. Furthermore, even giving an approximation algorithm is known to be NP-hard. In this paper we describe an efficient heuristic algorithm for finding long simple paths, using an hybrid approach of DFS and pseudo-topological orders, a a generalization of topological orders to non acyclic graphs, via a process we call "opening edges". An implementation of this algorithm won the Oracle MDC 2015 coding competition.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $\pi^0\pi^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT description., Comment: XIIth International Conference on Heavy Quarks and Leptons 2014, Mainz, Germany

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The first observation of about 2000 candidates, with a background contamination below 3%, of the rare decay $K^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm}\pi^{0}e^+e^-$ is reported by the NA48/2 experiment. The preliminary branching ratio in the full kinematic region is obtained to be: ${\cal B}(K^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm}\pi^{0}e^+e^-)=(4.06\pm0.17)\cdot10^{-6}$ by analyzing the data collected in 2003. A sample of $4.687\times 10^6$ $K^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^0_D$, decay candidates with a negligible background contamination collected in 2003-04 is analyzed to search for the dark photon ($A'$) via the decay chain $K^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^0$, $\pi^0\to\gamma A'$, $A'\to e^+e^-$. No signal is observed, and preliminary limits in the plane dark photon mixing parameter $\varepsilon^2$ versus its mass $m_{A'}$ are reported., Comment: To be published in La Thuile 2015 proceedings. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1412.8053

Mathematics - Combinatorics - Abstract
A $h$-sunflower in a hypergraph is a family of edges with $h$ vertices in common. We show that if we colour the edges of a complete hypergraph in such a way that any monochromatic $h$-sunflower has at most $\lambda$ petals, then it contains a large rainbow complete subhypergraph. This extends a theorem by Lefmann, R\"odl and Wysocka, but this version can be applied to problems in geometry and algebra. We also give an infinite version of the theorem.

Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence - Abstract
Representation determines how we can reason about a specific problem. Sometimes one representation helps us find a proof more easily than others. Most current automated reasoning tools focus on reasoning within one representation. There is, therefore, a need for the development of better tools to mechanise and automate formal and logically sound changes of representation. In this paper we look at examples of representational transformations in discrete mathematics, and show how we have used Isabelle's Transfer tool to automate the use of these transformations in proofs. We give a brief overview of a general theory of transformations that we consider appropriate for thinking about the matter, and we explain how it relates to the Transfer package. We show our progress towards developing a general tactic that incorporates the automatic search for representation within the proving process.

RationaleLeukocyte telomere length (LTL) is a biological marker of aging, and shorter LTL is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Reduced regenerative capacity has been proposed as a mechanism. Bone marrow-derived circulating progenitor cells are involved in tissue repair and regeneration.ObjectiveMain objective of this study was to examine the relationship between LTL and progenitor cells and their impact on adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Methods and resultsWe measured LTL by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in 566 outpatients (age: 63±9 years; 76% men) with coronary artery disease. Circulating progenitor cells were enumerated by flow cytometry. After adjustment for age, sex, race, body mass index, smoking status, and previous myocardial infarction, a shorter LTL was associated with a lower CD34+ cell count: for each 10% shorter LTL, CD34+ levels were 5.2% lower (P

Massive photon-like particles are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model. They have interactions similar to the photon, are vector bosons, and can be produced together with photons. The PADME experiment proposes a search for the dark photon ($A'$) in the $e^+e^- \to \gamma A'$ process in a positron-on-target experiment, exploiting the positron beam of the DA$\Phi$NE linac at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, INFN. In one year of running a sensitivity in the relative interaction strength down to $10^{-6}$ is achievable, in the mass region from 2.5 MeV $

The time over threshold is a widely used quantity to describe signals from various detectors in particle physics. Its electronics implementation is straightforward and in this paper we present the studies of its behavior in the presence of noise. A unique comb-like structure was identified in the data for a first time and was explained and modeled successfully. The effects of that structure on the efficiency and resolution are also discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the $K_{e4}$ modes: $K_{e4}(+-)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and $K_{e4}(00)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented. The results include a decay rate measurement and fits to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) description., Comment: Prepared for the Proceedings of "Moriond QCD and High Energy Interactions.
