Abstract

Navigation for and tracking of humans within a building usually implies significant infrastructure investment and devices are usually too high in weight and volume to be integrated into garments. We propose a system that relies on existing infrastructure (so requires little infrastructure investment) and is based on a sensor that is low cost, low weight, low volume and can be manufactured to have similar characteristics to everyday clothing (flexible, range of colours). This proposed solution is based on solar modules. This paper investigates their theoretical and practical characteristics in a simplified scenario. Two models based on theory and on experimental results (empirical model) are developed and validated. First distance estimations indicate that an empirical model for a particular scenario achieves an accuracy of 18cm with a confidence of 83%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This research is based on interviews conducted with a voluntary group of health practitioners who care for the adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse in one area of Scotland. This project takes a broadly interpretive approach to the interviews, and examines the processes of sense-making apparent in the scripts of the doctors, community nurse and counsellors who comprise this voluntary Forum. Those interviewed were highly sceptical of traditional medical approaches to dealing with survivors of such abuse, and they all questioned the effectiveness of expert professional knowledge. The research highlights the role of patient disclosure as a key mechanism in the process of their treatment, which is akin to the confessional technology discussed in detail in the work of Michel Foucault. Combined with other medical technologies patient disclosure is revealed as a technique of normalization. In this particular case the experts themselves were engaged in unravelling this process in search of alternative approaches to caring for their patients, which were based on a relationship of equal partnership rather than of expert authority. This research thus begins to illustrate the processes of sense-making and identity formation which exist between professional health care workers and the victims of abuse for whom they care. Abstract

Lack of diversity, inclusion and representation in the fashion industry is an ongoing issue in the 21st century. More specifically, certain fashion magazines have become known for failing to incorporate Black people in their editorial content. The purpose of this study is to highlight the lack of Black people featured on the cover of Esquire Magazine from 2010 to 2020. This study also serves to investigate the variable of having Black leadership at the magazine correlates with an increased number of Black cover stars featured. The methodology used to collect the data is content analysis. This research seeks to uncover any emerging themes or correlations with regard to the inclusion of Black people in Esquire’s editorial content. Stakeholder implications of this study include greater representation of Black people on the cover of the magazine and the incorporation of more diverse and inclusive content within mainstream fashion media. Throughout the duration of this research study, there were a number of trends, common themes and gaps that were identified. It became evident that there is an underrepresentation of Black men featured on the cover of Esquire in recent years, as well as a lack of Black editorial leadership at the publication.

The article focuses on the Great Britain Court of Appeal decision in Socimer International Bank Ltd v Standard Bank London Ltd, and offers information on the control over valuations in the event of insolvency in capital markets contracts. It states that in the case of capital markets contracts being unwound in the event of default, the non-defaulting counterparty often determines the default valuations of the remaining assets. It offers information on various facts on which the judgment of the Court of Appeal was based. It mentions that the judgment pointed that a forward sale is not a type of mortgage transaction, and the seller of a volatile and illiquid asset may require a wide discretion in the default valuation provision to protect it from bearing risk following a default by a buyer.

137. The story maker:Reflexive activism for sustainability in the business school

Abstract

We propose the term ‘story making’ for capturing what we call reflexive activism for sustainability in the business school. Story making contrasts the performative business school and its capitalization of space, time and matter. Story making is developed from Hannah Arendt’s work in combination with fragments from the works of Benjamin, Butler, Bakhtin and Sandoval. A story maker is grounded in concrete socio-material-natural relations. She cannot be located in fixed positions but moves through both academic, societal and terrestrial landscapes in order to change them. The story maker is a reflexive activist alternative to the performative business school in which we currently live. Reflexive activism has two characteristics. Practices of deep thinking are practices employed by individuals to set people free from the torture and torment of the performative business school and explore and activate the loving, creative, passionate, artful and uncontrollable elements of their activities towards sustainability. Action and refers to the activism that emerges when people mobilize for collective action for grand challenges like sustainability. This kind of story making transcends institutional, organizational and regional boundaries and mobilizes affordances across otherwise fixed time lines and spaces. The story maker is an embodiment of the ‘punctum’ that permits the reflexive and collective ‘bleeding’ that makes other spaces and actions possible. This article suggests a story making framework for reflexive resistance to the performative university. The performative university is defined as a capitalization of space and time. This capitalization is caught using Foucault’s notion of the dispositive. Story making is developed from Hannah Arendt’s work in combination with fragments from the works of Benjamin, Butler, Bakhtin and Sandoval. We argue that a story maker is grounded in concrete socio-material relations. She cannot be located in fixed positions but moves through both academic and societal landscapes in order to change them. The story maker is framework for developing reflexive resistance to the performative university. Two kinds are developed. The first kind corresponds to thinking and is a reflexive relationship to oneself. These practices are targeted towards setting people free from the torture and torment of the performative university and explore and activate the loving, creative, passionate, artful and uncontrollable elements of their activities. The second kind of reflexive resistance corresponds to action and refers to the activism that emerges when come together for a cause larger than itself. This kind of story making transcends institutional, organizational and regional boundaries and mobilizes affordances across fixed time lines and spaces.
