This report was prepared in the context of the LPCC Electroweak Precision Measurements at the LHC WG ( https://lpcc.web.cern.ch/lpcc/index.php?page=electroweak_wg ) and summarizes the activity of a subgroup dedicated to the systematic comparison of public Monte Carlo codes, which describe the Drell–Yan processes at hadron colliders, in particular at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This work represents an important step towards the definition of an accurate simulation framework necessary for very high-precision measurements of electroweak (EW) observables such as the W boson mass and the weak mixing angle. All the codes considered in this report share at least next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the prediction of the total cross sections in an expansion either in the strong or in the EW coupling constant. The NLO fixed-order predictions have been scrutinized at the technical level, using exactly the same inputs, setup and perturbative accuracy, in order to quantify the level of agreement of different implementations of the same calculation. A dedicated comparison, again at the technical level, of three codes that reach next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) accuracy in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) for the total cross section has also been performed. These fixed-order results are a well-defined reference that allows a classification of the impact of higher-order sets of radiative corrections. Several examples of higher-order effects due to the strong or the EW interaction are discussed in this common framework. Also the combination of QCD and EW corrections is discussed, together with the ambiguities that affect the final result, due to the choice of a specific combination recipe. All the codes considered in this report have been run by the respective authors, and the results presented here constitute a benchmark that should be always checked/reproduced before any high-precision analysis is conducted based on these codes. International audience; We propose a novel strategy to constrain the bottom and charm Yukawacouplings by exploiting LHC measurements of transverse momentum distributionsin Higgs production. Our method does not rely on the reconstruction ofexclusive final states or heavy-flavour tagging. Compared to other proposals itleads to an enhanced sensitivity to the Yukawa couplings due to distortions ofthe differential Higgs spectra from emissions which either probe quark loops orare associated to quark-initiated production. We derive constraints using datafrom LHC Run I, and we explore the prospects of our method at future LHC runs.Finally, we comment on the possibility of bounding the strange Yukawa coupling.

We report on the investigation of $��$(1232) production and decay in proton-proton collisions at a kinetic energy of 1.25 GeV measured with HADES. Exclusive dilepton decay channels $ppe^{+}e^{-}$ and $ppe^{+}e^{-}��$ have been studied and compared with the partial wave analysis of the hadronic $pp��^{0}$ channel. They allow to access both $��^+ \to p��^0(e^+e^-��)$ and $��^+ \to pe^+e^-$ Dalitz decay channels. The perfect reconstruction of the well known $��^0$ Dalitz decay serves as a proof of the consistency of the analysis. The $��$ Dalitz decay is identified for the first time and the sensitivity to N-$��$ transition form factors is tested. The $��$(1232) Dalitz decay branching ratio is also determined for the first time; our result is (4.19 $\pm$ 0.62 syst. $\pm$ 0.34 stat.) $\times $ 10$^{-5}$, albeit with some model dependence., 13 pages, 7 figures

Schizophrenia is characterized by neuropsychological deficits across many cognitive domains. Cognitive phenotypes with high heritability and genetic overlap with schizophrenia liability can help elucidate the mechanisms leading from genes to psychopathology. We performed a meta-analysis of 170 published twin and family heritability studies of >800 000 nonpsychiatric and schizophrenia subjects to accurately estimate heritability across many neuropsychological tests and cognitive domains. The proportion of total variance of each phenotype due to additive genetic effects (A), shared environment (C), and unshared environment and error (E), was calculated by averaging A, C, and E estimates across studies and weighting by sample size. Heritability ranged across phenotypes, likely due to differences in genetic and environmental effects, with the highest heritability for General Cognitive Ability (32%-67%), Verbal Ability (43%-72%), Visuospatial Ability (20%-80%), and Attention/Processing Speed (28%-74%), while the lowest heritability was observed for Executive Function (20%-40%). These results confirm that many cognitive phenotypes are under strong genetic influences. Heritability estimates were comparable in nonpsychiatric and schizophrenia samples, suggesting that environmental factors and illness-related moderators (eg, medication) do not substantially decrease heritability in schizophrenia samples, and that genetic studies in schizophrenia samples are informative for elucidating the genetic basis of cognitive deficits. Substantial genetic overlap between cognitive phenotypes and schizophrenia liability (average r g = '.58) in twin studies supports partially shared genetic etiology. It will be important to conduct comparative studies in well-powered samples to determine whether the same or different genes and genetic variants influence cognition in schizophrenia patients and the general population.

We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches. Sequence analysis suggests that KALRN, a Rho GDP/GTP exchange factor genetically linked to schizophrenia, could contain as many as nine tandem spectrin repeats (SRs). We expressed and purified fragments of Kalirin containing from one to five putative SRs in order to determine whether they formed nested structures that could endow Kalirin with the flexible rod-like properties characteristic of spectrin and dystrophin. Far UV circular dichroism studies indicated that Kalirin contains nine SRs. Based on thermal denaturation, sensitivity to chemical denaturants and the solubility of pairs of repeats, the nine SRs of Kalirin form nested structures. Modeling studies confirmed this conclusion and identified an exposed loop in SR5; consistent with the modeling, this loop was extremely labile to proteolytic cleavage. Analysis of a di-repeat fragment (SR4:5) encompassing the region of Kalirin known to interact with NOS2, DISC-1, PAM and Arf6 identified this as the least stable region. Analytical ultracentrifugation indicated that SR1:3, SR4:6 and SR7:9 were monomers and adopted an extended conformation. Gel filtration suggested that ΔKal7, a natural isoform which includes SR5:9, was monomeric and was not more extended than SR5:9. Similarly, the nine SRs of Kal7, which was also monomeric, were not more extended than SR5:9. The rigidity and flexibility of the nine SRs of Kal7, which separate its essential N-terminal Sec14p domain from its catalytic domain, play an essential role in its contribution to the formation and function of dendritic spines.

Four predictions of the MacArthur-Wilson theory of island biogeography were evaluated to assess the degree to which detrital-based organic aggregates (e.g. marine snow, organic detritus, and bioflocs) may provide a favorable microhabitat (i.e. an 'island') for bacteria in general, and specifically aquatic pathogens. We demonstrate the theory's relevance for microbial communities in aquatic environments by describing the community metabolic response and functional diversity of individual organic aggregates while documenting the persistence of potential pathogens and fecal indica- tor bacteria. Our results support the 4 predictions, including a significant species-area relationship, con- sistency of species richness at equilibrium, non-zero level of species turnover at equilibrium, and variance to mean ratios of less than 0.5 at equilibrium. The aggre- gate-associated microbial communities demonstrated significantly higher rates of metabolic response and functional diversity, and contained higher concentra- tions of culturable vibrios and fecal indicator bacteria compared to aggregate-free water, supporting the idea that organic aggregates are sites of favorable habitat surrounded by a less favorable matrix. These results substantiate that organic aggregates may be repre- sented as microscopic islands. Using island biogeogra- phy theory to understand the microbial ecology of aquatic pathogens associated with organic aggregates is important with respect to environmental sampling of recreational waters and mathematical modeling of the transmission of waterborne diseases from aquatic reservoirs to humans.

Salivary glands are potentially useful target sites for multiple clinical applications of gene transfer. Previously, we have shown that serotype 2 adeno-associated viral (AAV2) vectors lead to stable gene transfer in the parotid glands of rhesus macaques. As AAV5 vectors result in considerably greater transgene expression in murine salivary glands than do AAV2 vectors, herein we have examined the use of AAV5 vectors in macaques at two different doses (n = 3 per group; 10(10) or 3 x 10(11) particles per gland). AAV5 vector delivery, as with AAV2 vectors, led to no untoward clinical, hematological or serum chemistry responses in macaques. The extent of AAV5-mediated expression of rhesus erythropoietin (RhEpo) was dose-dependent and similar to that seen with an AAV2 vector. However, unlike results with the AAV2 vector, AAV5 vector-mediated RhEpo expression was transient. Maximal expression peaked at day 56, was reduced by approximately 80% on day 84 and thereafter remained near background levels until day 182 (end of experiment). Quantitative PCR studies of high-dose vector biodistribution at this last time point showed much lower AAV5 copy numbers in the targeted parotid gland (approximately 1.7%) than found with the same AAV2 vector dose. Molecular analysis of the conformation of vector DNA indicated a markedly lower level of concatamerization for the AAV5 vector compared with that of a similar AAV2 vector. In addition, cellular immunological studies suggest that host response differences may occur with AAV2 and AAV5 vector delivery at this mucosal site. The aggregate data indicate that results with AAV5 vectors in murine salivary glands apparently do not extend to macaque glands.

We describe how a simulation of Higgs boson production accurate at next-to-next-to-leading order and matched to a parton shower can be built by combining the POWHEG and MiNLO methods and using HNNLO results as input., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. We propose a new approach to the resummation of the transverse-momentum distribution of a high-mass colour-singlet system in hadronic collisions. The resummation is performed in momentum space and is free of kinematic singularities at small transverse momentum. We derive a formula accurate at the next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic level, and present the first matched predictions to next-to-next-to-leading order for Higgs-boson production in gluon fusion at the LHC. This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. We evaluate the capability of the global atmospheric transport model TM5 to reproduce observations of the boundary layer dynamics and the associated variability of trace gases close to the surface, using radon (222Rn), which is an excellent tracer for vertical mixing owing to its short lifetime (half-life) of 3.82 days. Focusing on the European scale, we compare the boundary layer height (BLH) in the TM5 model with observations from the NOAA Integrated Global Radiosonde Archive (IGRA) and in addition with ceilometer measurements at Cabauw (The Netherlands) and lidar BLH retrievals at Trainou (France). Furthermore, we compare TM5 simulations of 222Rn activity concentrations, using a novel, process-based 222Rn flux map over Europe (Karstens et al., 2015), with quasi-continuous 222Rn measurements from 10 European monitoring stations. The TM5 model reproduces relatively well the daytime BLH (within ~ 10–20 % for most of the stations), except for coastal sites, for which differences are usually larger due to model representation errors. During night, TM5 overestimates the shallow nocturnal BLHs, especially for the very low observed BLHs (< 100 m) during summer. The 222Rn activity concentration simulations based on the new 222Rn flux map show significant improvements especially regarding the average seasonal variability, compared to simulations using constant 222Rn fluxes. Nevertheless, the (relative) differences between simulated and observed daytime minimum 222Rn activity concentrations are larger for several stations (on the order of 50 %) compared to the (relative) differences between simulated and observed BLH at noon. Although the nocturnal BLH is often higher in the model than observed, simulated 222Rn nighttime maxima are larger at several continental stations, which points to potential deficiencies of TM5 to correctly simulate the vertical gradients within the nocturnal boundary layer, limitations of the 222Rn flux map, or issues related to the definition of the nocturnal BLH. At several stations the simulated decrease of 222Rn activity concentrations in the morning is faster than observed. In addition, simulated vertical 222Rn activity concentration gradients at Cabauw decrease faster than observations during the morning transition period, and are in general lower than observed gradients during daytime, which points to too fast vertical mixing in the TM5 boundary layer during daytime. Furthermore, the capability of the TM5 model to simulate the diurnal BLH cycle is limited due to the current coarse temporal resolution (3 hr/6 hr) of the TM5 input meteorology. Additionally, we analyze the impact of a new treatment of convection in TM5, based on the ECMWF reanalysis, leading to overall significantly lower (on the order of ~ 20 %) surface 222Rn activity concentrations during daytime compared to the current default convection scheme based on Tiedtke (1989). However, the performance of the model simulations compared to the 222Rn observations is very similar in terms of root mean square and correlation coefficient for both convection schemes.

Background and purpose Disease severity varies considerably among patients with Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy (SBMA). Our aim was to investigate the role of androgen receptor (AR) polymorphic repeats in SBMA phenotype. Methods We analyzed the length of AR polyQ and polyG tracts in 159 SBMA patients. This document is the final report of the ATLAS-CMS Dark Matter Forum, a forum organized by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations with the participation of experts on theories of Dark Matter, to select a minimal basis set of dark matter simplified models that should support the design of the early LHC Run-2 searches. A prioritized, compact set of benchmark models is proposed, accompanied by studies of the parameter space of these models and a repository of generator implementations. This report also addresses how to apply the Effective Field Theory formalism for collider searches and present the results of such interpretations.

The MOONBIT experiment investigated the capability to obtain structural and stratigraphic information of planetary subsoil using Seismic While Drilling (SWD) - a geophysical technique used for Earth subsoil exploration. The basic concept of SWD uses the drill bit as a seismic in-depth source of seismic waves, recorded by geophones as surface receivers gathering digital seismograms at different depths: signal processing provides seismic images known as Reverse Vertical Seismic Profiling (RVSP). MOONBIT’s target medium is the regolith layer on the Moon surface, covering basaltic bedrock. As innovatively RVSP SWD method, a passive Downhole Hammering Mechanism (DHM) actuates the drill bit, which becomes the borehole source of seismic waves. Two main tests were conducted in regolith simulant with buried geophones: the first test characterized the propagation velocity of seismic waves; the second test used a 1.5 m drill over a container. Drill control strategies and robustness towards signal transmission problems of future unmanned Moon drills of missions, Earth remote controlled, were also assessed and simulated with an error generator and a remote supervisor prototype. Test results with consistent seismic signals of good quality and resolution and comparative analysis showed that the DHM drill bit is an adequate source of SWD signals for RVSP planetary purposes and may support steering, drilling planning and scientific investigations.

This study used event-related potentials to examine interactions between mood, sentence context, and semantic memory structure in schizophrenia. Seventeen male chronic schizophrenia and 15 healthy control subjects read sentence pairs after positive, negative, or neutral mood induction. Sentences ended with expected words (EW), within-category violations (WCV), or between-category violations (BCV). Across all moods, patients showed sensitivity to context indexed by reduced N400 to EW relative to both WCV and BCV. However, they did not show sensitivity to the semantic memory structure. N400 abnormalities were particularly enhanced under a negative mood in schizophrenia. The tagged quasi-free $np \to np��^+��^-$ reaction has been studied experimentally with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI at a deuteron incident beam energy of 1.25 GeV/nucleon ($\sqrt s \sim$ 2.42 GeV/c for the quasi-free collision). For the first time, differential distributions for $��^{+}��^{-}$ production in $np$ collisions have been collected in the region corresponding to the large transverse momenta of the secondary particles. The invariant mass and angular distributions for the $np\rightarrow np��^{+}��^{-}$ reaction are compared with different models. This comparison confirms the dominance of the $t$-channel with $����$ contribution. It also validates the changes previously introduced in the Valencia model to describe two-pion production data in other isospin channels, although some deviations are observed, especially for the $��^{+}��^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. The extracted total cross section is also in much better agreement with this model. Our new measurement puts useful constraints for the existence of the conjectured dibaryon resonance at mass M$\sim$ 2.38 GeV and with width $��\sim$ 70 MeV.

Given the urgent need to converge on precise guidelines for accident management in nuclear fusion plants, an experimental campaign has been carried out on the "STARDUST-Upgrade" facility for dust mobilization phenomena investigation at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", in the framework of the activities of the Quantum Electronics and Plasma Physics (QEP) Research Group. The main purpose of this preliminary work is to test the "STARDUST-Upgrade" capability to investigate not only Loss of Vacuum Accident (LOVA) but also Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) accidents and their consequences. In fact, an upper port of "STARDUST-Upgrade" is used as an inlet port, reproducing coolant loss consequences from the upper ports of the vacuum vessel in ITER. The diagnostics required for these experimental studies and the results of this first experimental campaign are presented.

We review our recent theoretical and numerical results on the generation and observation of states with exponentially decaying dynamics during the propagation in a nonlocal nonlinear medium. These states, denoted as nonlinear Gamow vectors, allow to explain the origin of irreversibility of dispersive shock waves in nonlinear optics, and are characterized by discrete decay rates that we observe for the first time.

Background: The volume of the central corpus callosum (CCC) is inversely correlated with that of bilateral lateral ventricles (LV) in first-episode schizophrenia (FESZ) (del Re, in press). Here, we determined corpus callosum (CC) diffusion measures (DTI) using 2-tensor tractography in FESZ and controls in order to investigate the relationship between diffusion in CCC and LV volume at baseline and 0.7 months later. Free-water correction was applied to account for the possible contribution of LV CSF to CC DTI measures.

The aim of the present analysis is to determine the relative production cross sections of the $��$(1405) and $��(1385)^{0}$ resonances in p+p collisions at E$_{kin}$=3.5 GeV measured with HADES. Upper and lower limits have been determined for the ratio $��_{(��(1385)^{0}+p+K^{+})}/��_{(��(1405)+p+K^{+})}=0.76_{-0.26}^{+0.54}$. The knowledge of this ratio is an essential input for the analysis of the decay $��(1405)\rightarrow��^{\pm}��^{\mp}$, where an unambiguous separation of the $��$(1405) and $��(1385)^{0}$ signals is not possible.
