OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare postoperative bladder dysfunction rates and outcomes after laparoscopic and robot-assisted extravesical ureteric reimplantation in children and to identify risk factors associated with bladder dysfunction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 151 children underwent minimally invasive extravesical ureteric reimplantation in five international centres of paediatric urology over a 5-year period (January 2013-January 2018). The children were divided in two groups according to surgical approach: group 1 underwent laporoscopic reimplantation and included 116 children (92 girls and 24 boys with a median age of 4.5 years), while group 2 underwent robot-assisted reimplantation and included 35 children (29 girls and six boys with a median age of 7.5 years). The two groups were compared with regard to: procedure length; success rate; postoperative complication rate; and postoperative bladder dysfunction rate (acute urinary retention [AUR] and voiding dysfunction). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess predictors of postoperative bladder dysfunction. Factors assessed included age, gender, laterality, duration of procedure, pre-existing bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) and pain control. RESULTS: The mean operating time was significantly longer in group 2 compared with group 1, for both unilateral (159.5 vs 109.5 min) and bilateral procedures (202 vs 132 min; P = 0.001). The success rate was significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1 (100% vs 95.6%; P = 0.001). The overall postoperative bladder dysfunction rate was 8.6% and no significant difference was found between group 1 (6.9%) and group 2 (14.3%; P = 0.17). All AUR cases were managed with short-term bladder catheterization except for two cases (1.3%) in group 1 that required short-term suprapubic catheterization. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that bilateral pathology, pre-existing BBD and duration of procedure were predictors of postoperative bladder dysfunction (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our results confirmed that short-term bladder dysfunction is a possible complication of extravesical ureteric reimplantation, with no significant difference between the laparoscopic and robot-assisted approaches. Bladder dysfunction occurred more often after bilateral repairs, but required suprapubic catheterization in only 1.3% of cases. Bilaterality, pre-existing BBD and duration of surgery were confirmed on univariate and multivariate analyses as predictors of postoperative bladder dysfunction in this series.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a life-threatening infection that affects an increasing number of patients undergoing chemotherapy or allo-transplantation, and recent studies have shown that genetic factors contribute to disease susceptibility. In this two-stage, population-based, case-control study, we evaluated whether 7 potentially functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the ARNT2 and CX3CR1 genes influence the risk of IA in high-risk hematological patients. We genotyped selected SNPs in a cohort of 500 hematological patients (103 of those had been diagnosed with proven or probable IA), and we evaluated their association with the risk of developing IA. The association of the most interesting markers of IA risk was then validated in a replication population, including 474 subjects (94 IA and 380 non-IA patients). Functional experiments were also performed to confirm the biological relevance of the most interesting markers. The meta-analysis of both populations showed that carriers of the ARNT2rs1374213G, CX3CR1rs7631529A, and CX3CR1rs9823718G alleles (where the RefSeq identifier appears as a subscript) had a significantly increased risk of developing IA according to a log-additive model (P value from the meta-analysis [PMeta] = 9.8 · 10-5, PMeta = 1.5 · 10-4, and PMeta =7.9 · 10-5, respectively). Haplotype analysis also confirmed the association of the CX3CR1 haplotype with AG CGG with an increased risk of IA (P = 4.0 · 10-4). Mechanistically, we observed that monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) from subjects carrying the ARNTR2rs1374213G allele or the GG genotype showed a significantly impaired fungicidal activity but that MDM from carriers of the ARNT2rs1374213G and CX3CR1rs9823718G or CX3CR1rs7631529A alleles had deregulated immune responses to Aspergillus conidia. These results, together with those from expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) data browsers showing a strong correlation of the CX3CR1rs9823718G allele with lower levels of CX3CR1 mRNA in whole peripheral blood (P = 2.46 · 10-7) and primary monocytes (P = 4.31 · 10-7), highlight the role of the ARNT2 and CX3CR1 loci in modulating and predicting IA risk and provide new insights into the host immune mechanisms involved in IA development. ispartof: INFECTION AND IMMUNITY vol:88 issue:4 ispartof: location:United States status: published

Statistics::Methodology - Abstract
Regression modelling where explanatory variables are measured with error is a common problem in applied sciences. However, if inappropriate analysis methods are applied, then unreliable conclusions can be made. This work deals with estimation and diagnostic analytics in regression modelling based on the Birnbaum–Saunders distribution using additive measurement errors. The maximum pseudo-likelihood and regression calibration methods are used for parameter estimation. We also carry out a residual analysis and apply global and local diagnostic techniques in order to detect anomalous and potentially influential observations. Simulations are conducted to validate the proposed approach and to evaluate performance. A real-world data set, related to earthquakes, is used to illustrate the new approach.

PV Module Design, Manufacture, Performance and Reliability ,Photovoltaic Modules and BoS Components - Abstract
37th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1033-1037, The international standards currently used strongly underestimate the real conditions of the Atacama Desert, Chile. ATAMOSTEC aims to create PV technologies adapted to the desert and a Chilean Desert Label to boost the local solar industry, and to contribute on the decrease of the LCOE of PV technologies (Modules, BoS and O&M). We present preliminary work performed in ATAMOSTEC Consortium as the base to create the Chilean Desert Label for PV technologies and our vision on the future of PV research and development applied to the industry. Furthermore, the ATAMO n-type PV technology has been exposed outdoor for seven months and preliminary results are shown.

- Abstract
The polyphyletic group of black fungi within the Ascomycota (Arthoniomycetes, Dothideomycetes, and Eurotiomycetes) is ubiquitous in natural and anthropogenic habitats. Partly because of their dark, melanin-based pigmentation, black fungi are resistant to stresses including UV-and ionizing-radiation, heat and desiccation, toxic metals, and organic pollutants. Consequently, they are amongst the most stunning extremophiles and poly-extreme-tolerant organisms on Earth. Even though ca. 60 black fungal genomes have been sequenced to date, [mostly in the family Herpotrichiellaceae (Eurotiomycetes)], the class Dothideomycetes that hosts the largest majority of extremophiles has only been sparsely sampled. By sequencing up to 92 species that will become reference genomes, the “Shed light in The daRk lineagES of the fungal tree of life” (STRES) project will cover a broad collection of black fungal diversity spread throughout the Fungal Tree of Life. Interestingly, the STRES project will focus on mostly unsampled genera that display different ecologies and life-styles (e.g., ant-and lichen-associated fungi, rock-inhabiting fungi, etc.). With a resequencing strategy of 10-to 15-fold depth coverage of up to ~550 strains, numerous new reference genomes will be established. To identify metabolites and functional processes, these new genomic resources will be enriched with metabolomics analyses coupled with transcriptomics experiments on selected species under various stress conditions (salinity, dryness, UV radiation, oligotrophy). The data acquired will serve as a reference and foundation for establishing an encyclopedic database for fungal metagenomics as well as the biology, evolution, and ecology of the fungi in extreme environments.

- Abstract
Objectives: The analysis of annotated transcripts from genome-wide expression studies may help to understand the pathogenesis of complex diseases, such as systemic sclerosis (SSc). We performed a whole blood (WB) transcriptome analysis on RNA collected in the context of the European PRECISESADS project, aiming at characterising the pathways that differentiate SSc from controls and that are reproducible in geographically diverse populations. Methods: Samples from 162 patients and 252 controls were collected in RNA stabilisers. Cases and controls were divided into a discovery (n=79+163; Southern Europe) and validation cohort (n=83+89; Central-Western Europe). RNA sequencing was performed by an Illumina assay. Functional annotations of Reactome pathways were performed with the Functional Analysis of Individual Microarray Expression (FAIME) algorithm. In parallel, immunophenotyping of 28 circulating cell populations was performed. We tested the presence of differentially expressed genes/pathways and the correlation between absolute cell counts and RNA transcripts/FAIME scores in regression models. Results significant in both populations were considered as replicated. Results: Overall, 15 224 genes and 1277 functional pathways were available; of these, 99 and 225 were significant in both sets. Among replicated pathways, we found a deregulation in type-I interferon, Toll-like receptor cascade, tumour suppressor p53 protein function, platelet degranulation and activation. RNA transcripts or FAIME scores were jointly correlated with cell subtypes with strong geographical differences; neutrophils were the major determinant of gene expression in SSc-WB samples. Conclusions: We discovered a set of differentially expressed genes/pathways validated in two independent sets of patients with SSc, highlighting a number of deregulated processes that have relevance for the pathogenesis of autoimmunity and SSc.

The GRAVITY instrument was primarily conceived for imaging and astrometry of the Galactic centre. However, its sensitivity and astrometric capabilities have also enabled interferometry to reach a new domain of astrophysics: exoplanetology. In March 2019, the GRAVITY collaboration published the first spectrum and astrometry of an exoplanet obtained by optical interferometry. In this article, we show how this observation is paving the way to even more exciting discoveries — finding new planets, and characterising their atmospheres., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 47-49, December 2019.

The main goal of an interferometer is to probe the physics of astronomical objects at the highest possible angular resolution. The most intuitive way of doing this is by reconstructing images from the interferometric data. GRAVITY at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) has proven to be a fantastic instrument in this endeavour. In this article, we describe the reconstruction of the wind-wind collision cavity of the massive binary η Car with GRAVITY across two spectral lines: HeI and Brγ., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 31-33, December 2019.

The angular resolution of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the excellent sensitivity of GRAVITY have led to the first detection of spatially resolved kinematics of high velocity atomic gas near an accreting super- massive black hole, revealing rotation on sub-parsec scales in the quasar 3C 273 at a distance of 550 Mpc. The observations can be explained as the result of circular orbits in a thick disc configuration around a 300 million solar mass black hole. Within an ongoing Large Programme, this capability will be used to study the kinematics of atomic gas and its relation to hot dust in a sample of quasars and Seyfert galaxies. We will measure a new radius-luminosity relation from spatially resolved data and test the current methods used to measure black hole mass in large surveys., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 20-24, December 2019.

GRAVITY observations reveal that most massive stars in the Orion Trapezium cluster live in multiple systems. Our deep, milliarcsecond-resolution interferometry fills the gap at 1–100 astronomical units (au), which is not accessible to traditional imaging and spectroscopy, but is crucial to uncovering the mystery of high-mass star formation.The new observations find a significantly higher companion fraction than earlier studies of mostly OB associations. The observed distribution of mass ratios declines steeply with mass and follows a Salpeter power-law initial mass function. The observations therefore exclude stellar mergers as the dominant formation mechanism for massive stars in Orion., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 36-38, December 2019.

Near-infrared interferometry gives us the opportunity to spatially resolve the circumstellar environment of young stars at sub-astronomical-unit (au) scales, which a standalone telescope could not reach. In particular, the sensitivity of GRAVITY on the VLTI allows us to spatially resolve the CO overtone emission at 2.3 microns. In this article, we present a new method of using the model of the CO spectrum to reconstruct the differential phase signal and extract the geometry and size of the emitting region., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 40-42, December 2019.

ObjectiveImmune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are heterogeneous and complex conditions with overlapping clinical symptoms and elevated familial aggregation, which suggests the existence of a shared genetic component. In order to identify this genetic background in a systematic fashion, we performed the first cross-disease genome-wide meta-analysis in systemic seropositive rheumatic diseases, namely, systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.MethodsWe meta-analysed ~6.5 million single nucleotide polymorphisms in 11 678 cases and 19 704 non-affected controls of European descent populations. The functional roles of the associated variants were interrogated using publicly available databases.ResultsOur analysis revealed five shared genome-wide significant independent loci that had not been previously associated with these diseases: NAB1, KPNA4-ARL14, DGQK, LIMK1 and PRR12. All of these loci are related with immune processes such as interferon and epidermal growth factor signalling, response to methotrexate, cytoskeleton dynamics and coagulation cascade. Remarkably, several of the associated loci are known key players in autoimmunity, which supports the validity of our results. All the associated variants showed significant functional enrichment in DNase hypersensitivity sites, chromatin states and histone marks in relevant immune cells, including shared expression quantitative trait loci. Additionally, our results were significantly enriched in drugs that are being tested for the treatment of the diseases under study.ConclusionsWe have identified shared new risk loci with functional value across diseases and pinpoint new potential candidate loci that could be further investigated. Our results highlight the potential of drug repositioning among related systemic seropositive rheumatic IMIDs.

The superb resolution of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the unrivalled sensitivity of GRAVITY have allowed us to reconstruct the first detailed image of the dust sublimation region in an active galaxy. In the nearby archetypal Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, the 2 µm continuum emission traces a highly inclined thin ring-like structure with a radius of 0.24 pc. The observed morphology challenges the picture of a geometrically and optically thick torus., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 24-26, December 2019.

More than 4000 exoplanets are known to date in systems that differ greatly from our Solar System. In particular, inner exoplanets tend to follow orbits around their parent star that are much more compact than that of Earth. These systems are also extremely diverse, covering a range of intrinsic properties. Studying the main physi- cal processes at play in the innermost regions of the protoplanetary discs is crucial to understanding how these planets form and migrate so close to their host. With GRAVITY, we focused on the study of near-infrared emission of a sample of young intermediate- mass stars, the Herbig Ae/Be stars., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 38-40, December 2019.
