The origin of Tibetans remains one of the most contentious puzzles in history, anthropology, and genetics. Analyses of deeply sequenced (30×–60×) genomes of 38 Tibetan highlanders and 39 Han Chinese lowlanders, together with available data on archaic and modern humans, allow us to comprehensively characterize the ancestral makeup of Tibetans and uncover their origins. Non-modern human sequences compose ∼6% of the Tibetan gene pool and form unique haplotypes in some genomic regions, where Denisovan-like, Neanderthal-like, ancient-Siberian-like, and unknown ancestries are entangled and elevated. The shared ancestry of Tibetan-enriched sequences dates back to ∼62,000–38,000 years ago, predating the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and representing early colonization of the plateau. Nonetheless, most of the Tibetan gene pool is of modern human origin and diverged from that of Han Chinese ∼15,000 to ∼9,000 years ago, which can be largely attributed to post-LGM arrivals. Analysis of ∼200 contemporary populations showed that Tibetans share ancestry with populations from East Asia (∼82%), Central Asia and Siberia (∼11%), South Asia (∼6%), and western Eurasia and Oceania (∼1%). Our results support that Tibetans arose from a mixture of multiple ancestral gene pools but that their origins are much more complicated and ancient than previously suspected. We provide compelling evidence of the co-existence of Paleolithic and Neolithic ancestries in the Tibetan gene pool, indicating a genetic continuity between pre-historical highland-foragers and present-day Tibetans. In particular, highly differentiated sequences harbored in highlanders’ genomes were most likely inherited from pre-LGM settlers of multiple ancestral origins (SUNDer) and maintained in high frequency by natural selection. This study examines trekkers' perceptions of risk and death associated with high mountain adventure tourism based on their actual experience during the trek to the Everest Base Camp. The study is based on the authors' fieldwork conducted during April to May 2014. Interview questions focused on trekkers' perceptions of risks associated with their own activities, and the risks taken by professional mountaineers and Sherpa guides. Results show that trekkers realized the differences in risks associated with climbing and trekking, and celebrated the accounts of risk taken by the mountaineers. But when risk was self-experienced during the trek, celebration turned into fear and emotional distress. Trekkers generally held foreign mountaineers with much higher reverence than Sherpa climbers. The study concludes with the suggestion that more research is needed to examine the dynamic emotional state of adventure tourists, commodification of high mountain adventure, and understanding local perspectives of adventure tourists. The sherpa is offered as a helpful metaphor amid the rich and diverse metaphorical landscape describing public administration at the interface between senior public servants and ministers. The sherpa model acknowledges the complexity and nuanced leadership now demanded in the Westminster tradition, offering fresh tools for practitioners to think more critically about their role and how they can improve leadership skills. It also offers theoretical ability to incorporate relevant but underdeveloped factors, such as the environment, into the administrative leadership equation, thus enlarging issues at stake and forces demanding scrutiny, if administrative leadership is to be better understood. Human errors are of the most important issues due to the technological advances in various work settings. In medical professions, including nursing, investigation of human errors would help to find out approaches for the identification and reduction of these errors. Hence, the present study aimed to identify and assess nurses' errors in emergency ward of an educational hospital, using Systematic Human Error Reduction and Prediction Approach (SHERPA). In this qualitative study, first, the purpose and the procedure of the research were completely explained to the nurses. Then, Hierarchical task analysis (HTA) was done and the nurses' tasks and subtasks were identified by observing their activities and conducting interviews. Then, the SHERPA worksheet was completed to find the errors pertinent to each task. Sixty-five tasks and 231 errors were detected regarding the nurse's tasks, of which 59.3% was action errors, 25.55% checking errors, 4.33% retrieval errors, 2.16% information communication errors, and 8.66% selection errors. This means that the highest and lowest errors were respectively belonged to action errors and communication errors. Moreover, the checking errors obtained the highest undesirable risk level. Overall, the action errors and the checking errors should be priority in controlling and reducing of nurses errors in emergency ward. It should be noted that SHERPA can cover a wide range of activities including factors such as patients and their caregivers or other wards of the hospitals which make this technique an appropriate tool for assessing the errors in medical professions. Future visions of transport systems include both a drive towards automated vehicles and the need for sustainable, active, modes of travel. The combination of these requirements needs careful consideration to ensure the integration of automated vehicles does not compromise vulnerable road users. Transport networks need to be resilient to automation integration, which requires foresight of possible challenges in their interaction with other road users. Focusing on a cyclist overtake scenario, the application of operator event sequence diagrams and a predictive systems failure method provide a novel way to analyse resilience. The approach offers the opportunity to review how automation can be positively integrated into road transportation to overcome the shortfalls of the current system by targeting organisational, procedural, equipment and training measures. The Himalayas have been suggested as a natural barrier for human migrations, especially the northward dispersals from the Indian Subcontinent to Tibetan Plateau. However, although the majority of Sherpa have a Tibeto-Burman origin, considerable genetic components from Indian Subcontinent have been observed in Sherpa people living in Tibet. The western Y chromosomal haplogroups R1a1a-M17, J-M304, and F*-M89 comprise almost 17% of Sherpa paternal gene pool. In the maternal side, M5c2, M21d, and U from the west also count up to 8% of Sherpa people. Those lineages with South Asian origin indicate that the Himalayas have been permeable to bidirectional gene flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human error identification and subsequent prioritization are the foremost tasks involved in HRA. In this study a methodology is developed for performing these tasks with an application to overhead crane operations. The application of the present methodology will help to understand how the risk associated with the human errors propagates through different hierarchy levels. The methodology provides a framework for quantifying the risk of different human errors using the experts’ subjective opinions only. The incorporation of fuzzy VIKOR technique enables us develop a ranking mechanism for the failure modes where the individual constituent components are non-commensurable in nature. Scholars of globalization and cultural theories have argued that tradition and modernity are negotiated concepts and not fixed points for cultural references. The transformation of Khumbu, a traditional mountain region, to Everest, as a tourism destination did not occur overnight, but Hillary's and Norgay's scaling of the summit of Mt Everest slowly but decidedly paved the way for its turn as one of the most famous adventure destinations in the world. Applying concepts relevant to the dichotomies of tradition-modernity and local-cosmopolitan, and cultural competence, this paper explores the contrasts apparent in the touristic landscape of Khumbu: (1) in the physical realities of a place that is rugged and remote, yet friendly, cosmopolitan and familiar; (2) in how the Sherpa view themselves; and, (3) in tourists' imaginations and experiences with Sherpa society. Main data sources include 21 field-based interviews with Sherpa entrepreneurs and tourists, analysis of observations recorded in 13 student journals, and background literature on Khumbu based on the author's previous research and other major scholarly work on Sherpa society. Based on these observations, three main conclusions are made: (1) that the Sherpa are very successful in negotiating between tradition and modernity; (2) that successful negotiation is largely due to a higher level of cultural competence gained through involvement in tourism; and (3) that tourists are increasingly aware of the apparent discrepancy in their expectation and realities of Sherpa culture encountered during their trip. Accidents caused by human error are prominent in the medical field. The present study identified medical errors in the emergency triage area by assessing the tasks of all healthcare workers employed in the triage area of an educational hospital in Tehran, Iran in 2014. Data were collected using the systematic human error reduction and prediction approach (SHERPA). The tasks and sub-tasks were determined and analyzed using hierarchical analysis and the errors were extracted. A total of 199 human errors were identified in the different tasks. The rate of error for action was 46.8%, checking was 25.6%, retrieval was 8.5%, communication was 12.1% and selection was 7%. Rate of unacceptable and unfavorable risks were 21.1% and 38.6%, respectively. SHERPA was shown to be an appropriate technique for detecting medical errors. Introduction: Human error incidence is inevitable in many occupational situations such as power plants, military industries, and chemical and nuclear industries and can cause disaster and damage. This study was, therefore, aimed to assess human errors in combined-cycle power-plant control room and to offer control solution using SHERPA technique. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in Yazd combined-cycle power plant. At first, all different activities of the unit were considered after interviewing the workers and consulting with supervisors, line managers and also by HTA hierarchical analysis. SHERPA systematic prediction approach was applied to identify potential human errors. Results:115 errors analyzed through SHERPA approach, The results indicated that among checking errors were the highest with 39.04%. This was followed by action errors with 38.08%, communication errors, 13.89%, and retrieval errors, 8.61%. Conclusion:It can thus be concluded that the most prevalent errors are checking and action errors. Therefore, it is suggested that work instructions, staff training and translation of instructions as well as employing inspection operators to monitor the performances should be considered as a priority. This article investigates the conditions and circumstances that led to the emergence of Nepalese women's mountaineering. It draws a comparison and shows parallels with the development of Western female mountaineering. The special focus here is on so-called ‘women's expeditions’ in the Himalayas. In the last 20 years, these expeditions have played an important role for Nepalese women in gaining access to high-altitude climbing. An overview of the historical developments from the 1950s to the present illustrates the transnational and global involvement of high-altitude mountaineering in Nepal, as well as the impact of political and social programmes to foster gender equality and diversity. As Tibetan Buddhists from the Nyingma sect, the Khumbu Sherpa generally view the landscape as sacred and protected by various deities and spirits. Beliefs that humans can earn protection by following certain religious practices have traditionally provided beneficial environmental outcomes. Changing economic conditions, including those driven by foreign tourism, however, have reduced the prevalence or changed the character of these religious beliefs and practices. Mixed quantitative and qualitative research conducted in 2004-2007,2008, and 2011 showed both generational and market-driven changes related to how consultants conceived of the relationship between humans and nonhumans and which environmental taboos they observed. Everyday Buddhist knowledge and practice appeared to focus on fewer spiritual entities and to be hybridizing with more secular belief systems. For Sherpa who are not following place-based religious traditions, economics may motivate less sustainable decisions; other Sherpa will likely continue their practice or utilize new knowledge to support sustainable environmental behavior. The Himalayas are among the world's youngest mountain ranges. In addition to the geologic processes of mountain building and erosion, they are also highly vulnerable to human influenced change, occurring at local, national, regional, and international scales. A photo-elicitation methodology is employed to show how residents perceive those changes from historical perspectives, as well as their current conditions and impacts on their daily lives. Nepal's Khumbu region has undergone major social and environmental transformations since the 1960s when international trekking first began to influence the area's economy. The current perceptions of Khumbu residents of these changes are assessed through photo-elicitation interviews. Their responses are placed in the historical context of: (1) institutional and political changes, most of which have been driven by national government policies; (2) social and economic changes, for which the tourism economy has been central; and (3) environmental changes, reflecting the impacts of resource management and climate change. The mostly positive perceptions of Khumbu residents toward how their region has changed reflects general improvements in the physical and cultural landscapes of the Khumbu over time, as well as its continuing geographic isolation, which has helped to slow the rate of globalization, while also keeping the region a dynamic and popular tourist destination. Short-term, high-altitude (HA) exposure raises pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) and decreases left-ventricular (LV) volumes. However, relatively little is known of the long-term cardiac consequences of prolonged exposure in Sherpa, a highly adapted HA population. To investigate short-term adaptation and potential long-term cardiac remodeling, we studied ventricular structure and function in Sherpa at 5,050 m (n = 11; 31 ± 13 yr; mass 68 ± 10 kg; height 169 ± 6 cm) and lowlanders at sea level (SL) and following 10 ± 3 days at 5,050 m (n = 9; 34 ± 7 yr; mass 82 ± 10 kg; height 177 ± 6 cm) using conventional and speckle-tracking echocardiography. At HA, PASP was higher in Sherpa and lowlanders compared with lowlanders at SL (both P < 0.05). Sherpa had smaller right-ventricular (RV) and LV stroke volumes than lowlanders at SL with lower RV systolic strain (P < 0.05) but similar LV systolic mechanics. In contrast to LV systolic mechanics, LV diastolic, untwisting velocity was significantly lower in Sherpa compared with lowlanders at both SL and HA. After partial acclimatization, lowlanders demonstrated no change in the RV end-diastolic area; however, both RV strain and LV end-diastolic volume were reduced. In conclusion, short-term hypoxia induced a reduction in RV systolic function that was also evident in Sherpa following chronic exposure. We propose that this was consequent to a persistently higher PASP. In contrast to the RV, remodeling of LV volumes and normalization of systolic mechanics indicate structural and functional adaptation to HA. Introduction. Studying human errors as a risk factor in the occurrence of accidents is necessary. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify, predict and control human errors in industrial control units. Method. This is a case study carried out using SHERPA in the first unit of Zagros Methanol of Asalooyeh, Iran, and its sub-units. To collect the required data, various methods were used: observing, interviewing processing specialists and control unit operators, and studying technical documents and records. Results. In total, 222 human errors were identified in various occupational tasks. This study showed that 48.62% of them were action errors, 31.97% were checking errors, 6.75% were retrieval errors, 11.70% were communication errors and 0.90% were selection errors. Conclusion. In Nepal, as in many states worldwide, national parks and other protected areas have often been established in the customary territories of indigenous peoples by superimposing state-declared and governed protected areas on pre-existing systems of land use and management which are now internationally considered to be Indigenous Peoples' and Community Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCAs, also referred to Community Conserved Areas, CCAs). State intervention often ignores or suppresses ICCAs, inadvertently or deliberately undermining and destroying them along with other aspects of indigenous peoples' cultures, livelihoods, self-governance, and self-determination. Nepal's high Himalayan national parks, however, provide examples of how some indigenous peoples such as the Sharwa (Sherpa) of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest/Chomolungma) National Park (SNP) have continued to maintain customary ICCAs and even to develop new ones despite lack of state recognition, respect, and coordination. The survival of these ICCAs offers Nepal an opportunity to reform existing laws, policies, and practices, both to honour UN-recognised human and indigenous rights that support ICCAs and to meet International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) standards and guidelines for ICCA recognition and for the governance and management of protected areas established in indigenous peoples' territories. The challenge will be for Nepal to reverse long-established inter-ethnic and governmental relationships which have dispossessed and marginalised indigenous peoples and insufficiently respected their knowledge, institutions, conservation contributions, and human rights in national parks. Background and aims: Human being as the designer, programmer, and operator of systems, equipment and machineries plays a significant role in their safety at present time. In a sophisticated system, the operators' behavior has the potential of errors that can influence the capability of the system. In the present study, human errors of 400 kV posts were identified, analyzed and their reduction due to the application of proposed control measures were predicted. Methods: After identification of key jobs affective on electric industry's stability, the operator of 400 kV posts was selected as the sensitive and key job and analyzed using Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA). The operator's probable errors and their reduction were predicted using Systematic Human Error Reduction and Prediction (SHERPA). Results: The results revealed that in 107 predicted errors at 6 main tasks and 61 sub tasks of 400 kV posts, the most frequent type of error was action error and the maximum predicted error was related to maneuvering task. The results also showed that about 95% of identified risks from errors were at unacceptable and undesirable level. It was predicted that if the recommended control measures were applied the unacceptable and undesirable risks would be reduced to 0 and 7.5% respectively. Attempting to harness the powers of literacy to improve his standing and opportunities in rapidly developing Nepal, Dil Bahadur Tamang, an ambitious uneducated man of the hill village of Charigaon, instead encounters a most unexpected book of power and magic. This article tells the story of his encounter and of my own attempts to understand it. What is it about a book of essays by Lenin that makes it magic? Village resources for interpreting the significance of written materials include secular, Nepali-language schooling with its contexts of development, bureaucracy and state power; Tibetan Buddhist textuality with its ritual and lamaic authority; and the seemingly effortless literacy of foreigners – as well as a variety of less obviously related domains such as street magic, love curses and possession. Background and Aim: Human errors in many jobs especially in nuclear, military and chemical industries may bring disaster. Supporting this proposal there are many evidence around the world such as Chernobyl disaster in 1986, Three Mile Island accident in 1979 and Flixborough explosion in 1974. Therefore, human errors' identification especially in important and complex systems is necessary and thus predicting control methods are unavoidable. Method: Recent research is a case study performed in Zagros Methanol Company in Asalouye (Southern Pars). The study tools were observation, interview with experts and control room operators, inspecting available technical documents, and completing Systematic Human Error Reductive and Predictive Approach (SHERPA) worksheets. Results: Analysis of SHERPA worksheet indicated that, %71.25 were unacceptable errors, %26.75 undesirable, %2 acceptable (with modification), %0 acceptable. Predicted risk assessment after modification was %0, unacceptable errors %0, undesirable errors %4.35, acceptable (with modification in future) % 58.55, and acceptable errors %37.1. Conclusion: The study showed that the current implemented method can be used through various industries like to chemical and petroleum. Based on the results of the risk level assessment after modifications, once the system weaknesses were refined or controlled we should expect a decrease in the amount of human errors causing disaster. The ecological knowledge and understanding of indigenous peoples and long-term settlers is heterogeneous and continually in flux as they adapt to ecological, political and economic changes. This research focuses on Khumbu Sherpa ecological knowledge and its relation to environmental decision-making. The Sherpa, Tibetan Buddhists who practice agro-pastoralism, provide tourism services to visitors of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) National Park and Buffer Zone. Utilizing mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, I selected a stratified random sample of 100 individuals to assess spiritual values, and species and landscape knowledge. The results generally showed that individuals who lived on the tourist route and younger generations had less knowledge of these domains. These findings suggest that some Sherpa ecological knowledge and understanding had shifted from spiritual and agro-pastoralist socioeconomic values to a more tourism-centered economic logic. Materials and Methods: This project was a case study conducted in Zagross Methanol Company in Asalouye (South Pars), Iran. The walking-talking-through method was used to collect the required data and complete the Systematic Human Error Reductive and Predictive Approach (SHERPA) worksheets. The process experts and control room operators were interviewed and technical documents of the Company examined. Results: Analysis of the SHERPA worksheets indicated that the majority (48.62%) of the 222 errors identified were action errors, followed by checking errors (31.97%), retrieval errors (6.75%), selection errors (0.9%), and communication errors (11.7%). Conclusion: The results of this study show that the method can be used effectively in different industries, especially chemical industries, to identify human errors that may potentially lead to dangerous situations and accidents. Genetic determinants of resistance to hypobaric hypoxia in the Sherpa are still unknown. Since adaptive gene variants must still be subjected to positive selection, linkage disequilibrium between such variants and specific alleles of flanking DNA markers is expected. Following this line of reasoning, we performed a human genome scan using 998 polymorphic DNA markers in 7 unrelated Sherpa porters living in the Solu-Khumbu area. This minimalist approach succeeded in detecting 8 DNA markers showing homozygosity for the same shared allele. Analysis of additional DNA samples from 2 more Sherpa porters focused our attention on three polymorphic DNA markers (D6S1697, D14S274, D17S1795) showing homozygosity for the same shared allele in 8 out 9 tested individuals. Analysis of DNA samples from Sherpa and non-Sherpa populations of Nepal proved HW equilibrium in both populations for markers D14S274 and D17S1795, while an excess of heterozygotes was observed in the Sherpa population for marker D6S1697. A significant difference in allele frequencies for D14S274 and D17S1795 between the two populations was observed. These findings exclude the possibility that homozygosity for 3 specific loci in 8 unrelated individuals might be ascribed to inbreeding or recent genetic drift. We therefore conclude that the chromosomal segments detected by such DNA markers may include genes involved in adaptation to hypobaric hypoxia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Medication use in hospitals is a complex process and is dependent on the successful interaction of health professionals functioning within different disciplines. Errors can occur at any one of the five main stages of prescribing, documenting, dispensing or preparation, administering and monitoring. The responsibility for the error is often placed on the nurse, as she or he is the last person in the drug administration chain whilst more pressing underlying causal factors remain unresolved. This paper demonstrates how hierarchical task analysis can be used to model drug administration and then uses the systematic human error reduction and prediction approach to predict which errors are likely to occur. An integrated analysis of landscape change in the alpine zone of Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park, Nepal, is presented based on the results from five separate research expeditions conducted between 1984 and 2004. Research results indicate that alpine ecosystems (4,000–5,200 m) within the Imja and Gokyo valleys have been significantly impacted during the past twenty to thirty years as a result of poorly controlled tourism. Impacts within the alpine zone include the overharvesting of fragile alpine shrubs and plants for expedition and tourist lodge fuel, overgrazing, accelerated erosion, and uncontrolled lodge building. Evidence suggests that similar scenarios of landscape change in the alpine zone are occurring elsewhere around the Everest massif as the result of adventure tourism. This article stresses that the alpine zone is a comparatively neglected landscape that is in need of greater protection, conservation, and restoration involving integrated, applied research to the clarification of problems, the design of remedial projects, and monitoring of their impacts.“Community-based Conservation and Restoration of the Everest Alpine Zone,” a Sherpa-led project established in May 2004, is provided as an example of how the paper's research results are currently being utilized by local communities. I discuss the use of quantitative, qualitative, and collaborative methods to document and operationalize Indigenous ecological knowledge, using case studies from the Nepalese Himalaya and Great Basin. Both case studies applied results to natural and cultural resource management and interpretation for the public. These approaches attempt to reposition the interview subjects to serve as active contributors to the research and its outcomes. I argue that the study of any body of Indigenous knowledge requires a context-specific methodology and mutually agreed upon processes and outcomes. In the Nepalese Himalaya, I utilized linked quantitative and qualitative methods to understand how tourism influenced Sherpa place-based spiritual concepts, species, and landscape knowledge inside Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) National Park and Buffer Zone. In this method, Sherpa collaborated in the development of the research questions, the design, and in the review of results. The research in the Great Basin employed collaborative qualitative methods to document Numic (Southern Paiute and Western Shoshone) ecological knowledge of federal lands within their ancestral territory and attempted to piece together fragmented and contested histories of place. In this method, Numic peoples collaborated on the development of research questions and design; however they also conducted most of the interviews. In both cases, I selected particular suites of methods depending on the context and created forums for the translation of this information to applied outcomes. The methods were also improved and innovated through praxis.

• In total, 45 main tasks and 324 subtasks and 326 nursing errors were identified by observing their activities. • A total of 326 errors were detected from 234 subtasks. The error types included 200 action errors, 86 checking errors, 14 retrieval errors, 6 communication errors, and 20 selection errors. • The highest risk level of errors was related to action errors (61.34%). • 73.4% of errors were either at 'unacceptable' level or at the 'unfavorable level' • It was a study using SHERPA techniques. Improving health care quality is a global concern, and providing patients with safe healthcare is a WHO Patient Safety priority. The technological revolution in health services has highlighted the role of human factors in committing such errors, and since the number of medical errors, including nursing errors, increases on a daily basis. This research aimed to identify the causes of Nursing Task Errors in Emergency Department Using SHERPA Technique and adopt strategies to prevent and reduce them. Participants were 47 nurses (24 women and 23 men), who worked morning, evening and night shifts. The nurses were taught the methodology and talked about the objective of the study; they were then interviewed and observed for six months while working. This way, their tasks and subtasks were demarcated and the Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) was performed. SHERPA Error Mode Checklist was used to identify errors and their various types and then risk assessment was conducted. A total of 45 tasks, 234 subtasks, and 326 errors in regard to nursing activities were identified in the emergency department, with the highest frequency for action errors (61.34%) and the lowest for communication errors (1.84%). Also, there were 7.24 errors per task. The highest and lowest number of errors were at the 'unfavorable' (19.07%) and,'acceptable (safe)' (6.15%) risk levels, respectively. Based on the finding staff training, workload elimination,work process modification and updating guidelines are recommended. The results of present study were also submitted to the University Medical Executive management Committee to make individual, educational and organizational reforms (guidelines and instructions) in order to optimize the situation. Ascent to high altitude is accompanied by a reduction in partial pressure of inspired oxygen, which leads to interconnected adjustments within the neuromuscular system. This review describes the unique challenge that such an environment poses to neuromuscular fatigability (peripheral, central and supraspinal) for individuals who normally reside near to sea level (SL) (<1000 m; ie, lowlanders) and for native highlanders, who represent the manifestation of high altitude-related heritable adaptations across millennia. Firstly, the effect of acute exposure to high altitude-related hypoxia on neuromuscular fatigability will be examined. Under these conditions, both supraspinal and peripheral fatigability are increased compared with SL. The specific mechanisms contributing to impaired performance are dependent on the exercise paradigm and amount of muscle mass involved. Next, the effect of chronic exposure to high altitude (ie, acclimatization of ~7-28 days) will be considered. With acclimatization, supraspinal fatigability is restored to SL values, regardless of the amount of muscle mass involved, whereas peripheral fatigability remains greater than SL except when exercise involves a small amount of muscle mass (eg, knee extensors). Indeed, when whole-body exercise is involved, peripheral fatigability is not different to acute high-altitude exposure, due to competing positive (haematological and muscle metabolic) and negative (respiratory-mediated) effects of acclimatization on neuromuscular performance. In the final section, we consider evolutionary adaptations of native highlanders (primarily Himalayans of Tibet and Nepal) that may account for their superior performance at altitude and lesser degree of neuromuscular fatigability compared with acclimatized lowlanders, for both single-joint and whole-body exercise., (© 2022 The Authors.
