This paper begins with the assertion that world literature is in danger of becoming a closed system, whereby literature anticipates its critical reception in both its form and content. Emergent African literary forms are often excluded from the field of world literature precisely because they demand methods of reading that challenge this anticipatory logic. We refer to this emergent literature circulating in African urban spaces as "African street literature." This paper focuses on three such street forms: ephemeral print literature, flash fiction, and spoken word poetry. In all three cases, the literary form registers its situated-ness, and as such its location is co-constructive of the field of the literary text. The methodological intervention that the paper makes explores ways of reading context, material, form, and content as combined and codetermining without losing attention to the literariness of the text under examination. "The Strawman" is a short story employing archetypal imagery and an understanding of psychoanalytic theory that explores the relationship between a lonely young woman and her partner; a man made of straw. Reader's comments provide evidence that although the imagery is interpretable, the emotional content of the piece has elements of universality and may induce experiences of empathy, compassion, or identification within the reader. The article discusses the Soviet concept of "great friendship" ("velikaia druzhba") in Tajik literature in the 1940s and 1950s. It comments on the work of several authors, including the stories and poetry of Sadriddin Aini, Foteh Niyozi, and Mirzo Tursunzoda. The author also analyzes the writings of Iranian émigré and Soviet Tajik poet Abulqasim Lahuti and Iranian scholar Sa'id Nafisi. Three studies investigate the influence of empathy and the level of fictionality of short stories on consumers' evaluations of emotional melodramatic entertainment. We find that high empathizers' evaluations are more favorable when the story is low in fictionality (i.e., real) versus high. In contrast, low empathizers' evaluations do not differ, regardless of the level of fictionality, except when these individuals (i.e., males) are provided with an excuse to become involved in the story; in this case a story that is high (i.e., make-believe) as opposed to low in fictionality is evaluated more favorably. The article focuses on the fictional representations of Anne Boleyn on forty-five Anglo-American novels and short stories, such as "Memoirs of the Life of Anne Boleyn: Queen of Henry VIII," by Elizabeth Benger, which are published between 1901 and 2006. Utopian and dystopian fiction are classifiable under the umbrella term speculative fiction, which speculates with or takes risks with the reality it creates in the fiction. My paper investigates speculative writing which is also utopian by South Asian feminist and activist women, comparing creative texts by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, from the first half of the 20th century, and Vandana Singh, from contemporary times. A selection of their published short fiction are focused on, in particular Hossain's 'Sultana's Dream' (1905) and Padmarag and the short story 'Delhi' by Singh. The article pulls together analysis of different kinds of mobility to argue that both writers, in their imagination of mobile utopia, also further creative speculations round human rights, with special reference to gender and the city. The article analyses how South Asian metropolises, notably Calcutta and Delhi, get reimagined in their writing. Both Hossain and Singh were/are educators in real life. How do their educative and speculative voices come together (or not) in their mobile utopia reimagining human rights? From Aristotle's Poetics, literature and logic have been companions in approaching the hypothetical realm of the 'what if.' In this paper, I focus on the combinatorial possibilities of logic to see how mathematics becomes an important tool for the Modernist text's aesthetic appeal to anti-representational and self-enclosed systemic autonomy. Is mathematical discourse autonomous vis-à-vis external reality? Can literary Modernism achieve textual autonomy that goes against realistic verisimilitude by following mathematical discourse? Though literary texts often negotiate formal systems with sophisticated governing logics, can literature itself become a logico-mathematical system? I trace the dialectic of form and system in the short stories of Italo Calvino, known for his interest in mathematical discourse as an Oulipian 'proceduralist.' Calvino weaves this dialectic around political concerns like the machinic logic of modernity and technocratic capitalism. 'Numbers in the Dark' mythicizes mathematical error that goes against systemicity and leads to an opposition between logic and calculative rationality. In 'The Burning of the Abominable House,' computer becomes a narrative device to play with permutations and combinations of the real that conspire against the construction of a single reality. Evoking Oulipo's position against chance, I bring in Quentin Meillassoux's readings of Cantorian 'transfinite' to distinguish chance from radical contingency. The article analyzes some of the short stories included in Men without Women, in order to identify certain specific features ranging from the characteristic elocutionary style to the metanarrative construction, the creation of suggestive images, and the multiple cultural (music and film) or intertextual references typical of the author's work. Although Murakami considers his short stories a minor work, they are a significant example of his literary richness. In some of his reviews dedicated to Poe, Jorge Luis Borges considers him the father of a singular genealogy of modern and avant-garde poetry. Critics and short story writers also consider Poe the father of the short story and of theories of the short story in the Americas. Borges points out that, in comparison to Poe and other writers of fantastic literature in the United States, the Argentine short story shows a tendency toward naive realism. He also highlights different tendencies in the short stories belonging to these literatures, on the basis of Poe's criticisms of Nathaniel Hawthorne's metaphysical allegories. Confirming this critique, Borges asks whether it is possible for an unorthodox rhetorical strategy like allegory to name that which Hawthorne advocates: the singular wholeness of the entirety of the fable's unity. This essay examines the production of Global English through literary texts by examining three adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Gold Bug" in the 1930s by competing figures in the vocabulary control movement—Harold Palmer, Michael West, and C. K. Ogden—leaders in the formation of the field of applied linguistics. The first part of the essay explains the colonial origins of the vocabulary word list and its ascendant value in the interwar period for the new discipline of applied linguistics, and as part of the competition for English language textbooks. This leads to an analysis of these three simplifications of Poe's story that demonstrates how the language politics in Poe's story provides a structure through which to express a nascent Global English ideology regarding race, vernacular, and auxiliary languages. The primary aim of this paper is to examine students´ relational engagement in a short story, as well as their use of mental state expressions in responding to it in three different writing assignments, one of which involved photo elicitation. A secondary aim is to examine and compare the relational engagement between students reading the story in Swedish (i.e., their L1) and English (i.e., their L2), respectively. The theoretical framework draws on research in relational engagement/transactional theory, the Appraisal system, Dual Code Theory (DCT), and the Linguistic Threshold Hypothesis. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. A total of 33 students participated in the study, half of whom read the story in Swedish, and half in English. The results show that the students used a wide range of mental state expressions, but also that these expressions changed in accordance with task formulation. The results also show that the photoelicitation assignment yielded the strongest relational engagement. Furthermore, students reading the story in Swedish generally demonstrated a stronger relational engagement than students reading the story in English. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objectives of this research are (1) revealing the lecturers and students' perception on the use of multicultural-based short story appreciation textbook in teaching prose-fiction appreciation course; and (2) evaluating the effectiveness of multicultural-based short story appreciation textbook in teaching prose-fiction appreciation course. This study employed a mixed-method approach by combining evaluative descriptive research design and experimental design to evaluate multicultural-based short story appreciation textbook in private universities in East Java, Indonesia. The data were gathered via interview, questionnaires, documentation, and test. While choosing the experimental and control group from each university, the sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. The results reveal that both the lecturers and the students showed their positive responses and attitudes towards the use of multicultural-based short story appreciation textbook in teaching prose-fiction appreciation course. They asserted that the textbook could motivate the students in learning prose-fiction appreciation course. It is inferred that the use of multicultural-based short story appreciation textbook is more effective than the use of previously common textbook used by the lecturers to teach prose-fiction appreciation. After returning from exile in Mexico to Germany in spring 1947, Anna Seghers began to write three historical novellas on anti-slavery revolts in the Westindies around 1800. But the cycle Karibische Geschichten (Caribbean Tales) couldn't be finished before 1960. Seghers had to interrupt writing the third short story Das Licht auf dem Galgen (The Light on the Gallows). What was the reason? All of the Karibische Geschichten deal with violence and revolution in different times and places: the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, the Mexican Revolution and the Russian Revolution (especially under Stalin). Focusing on the original version of Das Licht auf dem Galgen, written in 1948, I will try to show that Seghers had difficulties in coming to terms with the inevitability of violence when a society is formed, i.e. with the question of authority and its legitimation (›Gründungsgewalt‹). The article reports on the relevance and richness of the work of Short story writer Maeve Brennan. Her writing has recently regained scholarly status, which can be seen not only by the popularity of her reissued short stories but also through critical perspectives. Her exemplary work is underpinned in Angela Bourke’s biography.

Summary: This short story explores the struggle to translate both experience and language. Based on research I conducted in İstanbul in 2015, this work of ethnographic fiction examines the production and reproduction of memories of the Gezi Park Protests, in the form of narrative and bodily experience. The narrative builds on the juxtaposition of clean and filthy that is introduced by one of the narrator's interlocutors as he recounts his experience of police violence during the protests. The narrator seeks to understand how a blow first described as "clean" is only sentences later rendered "filthy," and how to translate it. This linguistic exploration also becomes a corporeal one: the narrator navigates the dichotomy of clean and filthy through her own bodily experiences conducting fieldwork. This becomes one way in which she accesses the feminist underpinnings of the protests, which her interlocutors understood in terms of resistance to the encroachment of the state into women's intimate lives. Shared corporeal experiences provide a path toward a translation that at the same time allows the narrator to confront the very incommensurability of supposedly shared experiences. Can data help us explore and expose the soul of the community? This was the challenge posed by the 2013 Data Exposition. The Knight Foundation, in cooperation with Gallup, furnished data from 43,000 people over 3 years (2008–2010) in 26 communities, which we explored in an effort to discover variables associated with community attachment. Our analysis focused on four cities that stood out after our initial exploration of the data set: State College, PA; Detroit, MI; Milledgeville, GA; and Biloxi, MS. We present our use of survey-weighted binned scatterplots to graphically explore the association between an individual's community attachment and perceived economic outlook. Additionally, we present a few other analyses we found interesting during our initial exploration which we view as a collection of "short stories". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Haiti is of significance in the colonial history for three reasons: Firstly, Haiti was one of the first colonial islands feeding Europe with sugar and coffee plantations for many years; secondly, it was a gateway to America and, lastly, it is the first country to abolish slavery and as such the first independent state established by Afro-Haitians. Another noteworthy point is that the slave uprising in 1803 had traces of the French Revolution and the fact that Haitians asked for freedom in accordance with the declaration of the French Revolution makes the case even more important. While the concept of freedom appeared as an important concept within the framework of the Enlightenment philosophy, the period's thinkers' remaining silent about the slave trade and freedom of slaves indicates the hypocrisy of Europe. It was observed that Germany, being back in the race of colonization, had a special interest in the colonies, especially, in Haiti. In addition to the prominent thinkers such as Hegel and Humboldt, some authors had an interest in the subject. Anna Seghers's short story "Die Hochzeit von Haiti", an allusion to "Die Verlobung in St. Domingo" by the romantic author Heinrich von Kleist, deals with the Haitian revolt and takes the uprising of the Haitian slaves as a subject matter with an emphasis on the concept of liberty. In this study, the aim is to indicate how the rebellion of Haitian slaves is reflected in both works after revealing the attitude of the Enlightenment philosophy toward the slave trade of the period. The hypothesis underlying this article is that Short Fiction as a genre perpetually in the process of positioning itself elsewhere. Short Fiction weaves unconventional and schematized forms of writing that open up allegorical interpretations and displace the integrity of the writing self. The crisp controlled sequences in short fiction produce a constellation of practices that multiply spatial contingency. Built on the dichotomy of the authentic self and its alienation, short narratives mobilize the zero degree of storytelling and the ghost in the machine by manipulating spatiotemporal narrative structures. In doing this, they turn the narrative into a process of engagement and an act of performance on the part of the reader, thus altering the prior ways of storytelling. The short story becomes a way of practicing the fiction of identity at a time when the self is in constant change, vastly increasing the possibilities of transitory commitments and fragmented relationships. This article analyses silence at the interface between print and audio media by reading and listening to Heinrich Böll's short story 'Murke's Collected Silences' ('Doktor Murkes gesammeltes Schweigen') in its book (1958) and three German-language radio play versions (1965; 1986; 1989). Reference is also made to Benjamin Gwilliam's sound art piece (2007) based on the 1986 adaptation. The Böll story thematises silence and media in various ways, and has definite countertextual aspects, in the sense of technology, textuality, and materiality of language. In the printed story, silence is either verbally named or typographically indicated, whereas the radio plays present or perform it. The comparison of the three silence-related scenes in the Murke radio plays shows considerable variation in the length and manner of pauses. The article considers the differences in receiving silence through print and audio media, and concludes that 'Murke' demonstrates, in both formats, that the medium is an integral part of the 'message', even the silent one. This paper examines self-fashioning in Aleksandar Hemon's "Everything," a story about a Sarajevo teenager's journey through ex-Yugoslavia to the Slovenian town of Murska Sobota. His aim? "[T]o buy a freezer chest for my family" (39). While in transit, the first-person narrator imagines himself a rogue of sorts; the fictional journey he takes, meanwhile, is clearly within the quest tradition. The paper argues that "Everything" is an unruly text because by the end of the story the reader must jettison the conventional reading traditions the quest narrative evokes. What begins as a comic tale about a minor journey opens out, in the story's final lines, into a story about larger historical concerns, namely, the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Creative production has been reported to decline with age. This study investigated age-related differences in creative verbal production. Participants were 30 younger and 30 older adults. Study testing included language and cognitive assessments and the experimental task wherein participants created short stories incorporating words that are not commonly related, semantically or associatively. The resulting stories were rated by independent blinded judges for originality, cohesion, appropriateness, and organization. Younger adults' stories were rated as being significantly more original and more appropriate. Integrating unrelated words to create original stories requires activating widely distributed lexical-semantic networks to develop novel associations. Potential decreased neural network connectivity due to white matter degradation, commonly seen in normal aging, as well as decrements in front-executive disengagement may have affected older adults' performance on this story creation task. The inclusion of Rebecca West's short story 'Indissoluble Matrimony' in the first issue of BLAST (1914) has much to tell us about the intellectual debts the Vorticist movement owed to West and to the feminist periodical culture with which she was associated. West composed her story in 1912–13, years when she was highly active as both contributor to and literary editor of Dora Marsden's The Freewoman (1911–12) and The New Freewoman (1913). In this article, I examine how the 'energy' promoted across BLAST aligned with feminist political conceptions of energy in Marsden's journals, and how these ideas were also shaped by early twentieth-century understandings of the universe, including theories of vortex motion, the ether, electromagnetism and thermodynamics. By paying close attention to the theme and metaphor of energy in 'Indissoluble Matrimony', this article traces patterns of influence between West, Marsden, Ezra Pound and Wyndham Lewis that reveal intersections between avant-guerre feminism and the Vorticist avant-garde. This paper examines the performative significance of Lu Xun's historical short stories collected in Gushi xinbian (Old stories retold, 1936) by focusing on the mediality of his idiosyncratic writing, which he himself called "facetious." It revisits the young Lu Xun's uneasy engagement with medical science as student documented in his lecture notebooks bearing corrections by his teacher as well as his early essays. This provides an analytical framework for discussing the stakes of his historical fiction as a critique of the discourse of scientific historiography which was increasingly gaining currency in May Fourth China. Lu Xun's historical fiction is conspicuously not meant to function as a stable medium between the past and the present but betrays its opaque and even arbitrary mediality, which disrupts identity in historical representation and thus critiques ideological, "cultural" power inherent in scientific discourse that tries to establish that identity. The paper then reads Gushi xinbian as attempts at recovering history from such power and envisioning new possibilities of historical transmission in the midst of an aporetic search of a prehistory of Chinese modernity—attempts hinged on anachronistic textual moments whose meanings circulate in defiance of any identity of time with itself, thereby bespeaking an alternative power to "make" history.
