The concept of honour and the resulting discourses have always affected women's lives in Pakistan. This paper will utilize Butler's theory of performativity and insights from feminist film theory and women's history in Pakistan to critique and evaluate women's representation in Pakistani popular cultural texts, and thus engage with the politics of gender in Pakistan. The methodological tools of content analysis and discourse analysis will be used to investigate the central research question that is: to what extent does the representation of women's roles in contemporary Pakistani drama serials include traditionalist discourses of honour?' It will thus examine that 'how' women are represented in Pakistani soap operas or drama serials and what it means to be a 'honourable' woman. This will reveal that despite modernization and increased female education and labor participation, honour discourses still continue to be the most dominant feature of a woman's life on screen and in pop culture. Research shows that some of the most prominent concepts that are influenced by honour discourses include marriage, domestic violence, economic roles, labor participation, silencing of victims of sexual harassment or rape and even one's religious standing. The study shows how important it is to investigate these cultural texts with gendered lenses and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges women in this part of the world face. Keywords: Honor, Domestic Violence, Religion, Marriage, Drama, Introduction The concept that the construction of gender in media representations and cultural discourses is a political act implicating power relations has been widely acknowledged since the second wave feminists' [...]

This essay examines the discourse of the initial industry promotion and popular press reviews of the Lifetime series, UnREAL, and argues that in seeking to justify the program as "quality," this discourse disparaged Lifetime TV as feminized popular culture. This was accomplished in two ways. First, in seeking to legitimate its brand, Lifetime effectively denigrated its own brand history, including its programming and audiences. Second, commentators and creators were eager to herald at least one of the central protagonists as the arrival of the seemingly long-awaited female antihero, thus making the show a worthy entry to the quality TV canon. The result was denial of the program's relationship to feminized cultural forms, including its provision of different frames for interpreting the actions of the characters and "soapy" pleasures, contributing to the broader process of the denigration of those very forms and practices. The controversial establishment of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Portugal was the subject of many news reports during the 1990s, in which accusations of serious crimes — from charlatanism to connections to drug trafficking and child abduction — filled the pages of newspapers (G. M. Dias, 2006; R. A. S. Dias, 2016; Farias, 1999; Farias & Santos, 1999; Júnior, 2013; Machado, 2003). Many of these news reports linked the Church with stereotypes about Brazil and Brazilians and referenced Brazilian soap operas, which were quite popular in the country at the time. To observe whether these characteristics have been maintained over the years, the author analysed reports published by the influential newspapers Público and Expresso from the early 21st century (2001 and 2002), in 2010 and 2017, respectively. Inspired by critical discourse analysis and framing analysis, and with the theoretical support of the theory of social representations, such analyses allowed the author to conclude that the characteristics identified in the 1990s remained, although the Church’s media presence has since reduced. In turn, the reference to soap operas manifests in the fabric of journalistic discourse, with a hybridisation formed between the melodramatic and informational genres.

This article examines a soap opera club of Sri Lankan Sinhalese migrant women in Melbourne and their collective engagement with television soap operas from the home country. Teledramas, as Sri Lankan Sinhalese-language soap operas are known, have a predominantly female viewership in Sri Lanka and also constitute a significant presence in the media diets of Sinhalese migrant women in Melbourne, and elsewhere in the world. Furthermore, at a women's teledrama club affiliated to a Sri Lankan diasporic association, Sinhalese migrant women come together to exchange and archive reproduced DVDs of teledramas broadcast in Sri Lanka, bought from Sri Lankan grocery shops in Melbourne. This article builds on ethnographic research conducted at the teledrama club to show how what may appear to be an informal gathering of female teledrama fans is complexly interwoven into the expression of identity and belonging in Australian society. The article positions trans-Asia media flows in Australia within the everyday lives of migrants by examining the Sri Lankan soap opera club as a gendered space as well as a cultural space of identity, belonging and expression. This article finds that the teledrama club provided the women a symbolic national identity as an audience and the Sri Lankan narratives offered audiovisual access to the value systems of their distant geography and past. TELEVISION soap operas , *ECONOMIC sociology , *CULTURAL capital - Abstract
For the last decade, Turkish TV series particularly soap operas have been alluring an increasing rate of viewers both in Turkey and 76 countries around the world, spreading from Latin America to the Far East. This article examines the sociological foundations of high levels of interest in Turkish TV series in the Balkan region since relationships between the Turks and other people in this geographic area have a long history. As well, today’s reflections of this historical relationship date back to the fifth century in so many ways. Turkish TV series have thus captured the social and cultural proximity of individuals living in these two geographies in the best sense and have also raised their awareness in this respect. A total of 15 out of 76 TV series released in Turkey until 2016 have been so far exported to Balkan countries and they have received enough attention. Accordingly, it is of utmost importance to determine the sociological foundations of this development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

111. Stereotypes: Contribution of soap opera media text to women's identity construction.

- Abstract
Gender inequality is a global problem (Khachaturyan and Peterson, 2015) as much as it is a South African problem (Salahodjaev and Azam, 2015; Morrell et al, 2012). This study records a focus group interview where participants from various townships around Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, discuss television soap operas and how women construct their identities through this genre – unaware of culture and gender stereotypes contained within – leading to inequality. Television in particular, among other media, influences millions of viewers daily (Haferkamp, 1999), including the way women see themselves and how they construct their identities (Hui, 2010). Soap opera content contains a fictional world which allows for escapism and transportation of its audience. As Cohen (2006:183) says: "By allowing us to share in the lives of others, entertainment can excite and educate us, can make us imagine, think and feel in ways we may not otherwise have a chance to experience". This invariably contributes to the construction of audience identities, sadly through unrealistic storylines. Content producers themselves are not immune to the effects of gender stereotypes as they too, at some point in their lives, formed part of a media audience in one way or another. Their identities are constructed by their lived experiences and 'unrealistic' media they have consumed over the years. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that gender inequality is perpetuated by media content rife with gender stereotypes and unrealistic identities. Gender stereotypes, sometimes shown through cultural practices in storylines, contribute to gender inequality (Haider, 2017) in a subtle manner disguised as entertainment. Through this focus group interview, participants demonstrate how media content, specifically soap operas, contribute to their identities and how soap operas are not filled with images that promote aspects of women as being intelligent, independent, socially responsible and conscious (Hui, 2010). Instead, soap operas insinuate, through certain characters, that women should be seen, materialised, consumed, and fantasised (Motsaathebe, 2009). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the transformation of television serial fiction in Spain from deregulation and the early stages of private television to the dawn of the digital era (1990–2010). The adaptation of Latin-American telenovelas and English-speaking soap operas to the local context brought traditional Spanish costumbrismo in television fiction up to date. Using this as a starting point, the study identifies four stages of the long-running serial format in Spain that demonstrate its capacity to adapt to a double logic of transnationalization maintaining proximity to regional markets alongside a process of gradual adjustment to the changing social, cultural and economic context. The consolidation of democracy in Spain and successive Socialist administrations (1982–1990) favoured the renewal of themes from classical melodrama with the inclusion of issues until then barely addressed, including women's liberation, sexuality and the recovery of historical memory: topics that have become the mainstay of Spanish television serial fiction in the twenty-first century. Soap operas are a popular culture phenomenon around the globe, including the Republic of Armenia (Armenia hereafter), a small ancient and changing society in post-Soviet era. A survey of 292 college students from Yerevan, the capital, as well as the provinces of Armenia was conducted in Yerevan. Employing uses and gratifications theory, this study investigated the students’ reported motives in viewing soap operas in relations to their demographics. The survey yielded three motives for viewing soap operas: to pass time, for pleasure, and for stimulation. Analysis showed that provincial students were more likely to watch soap operas to pass time. The study can serve as a foundation for future studies about media use in Armenia and possibly other post-Soviet societies.

This paper looks at idioms drawn from a corpus of soap opera and compares their communicative functions to those performed by idioms in corpora of naturally-occurring conversation. In this study soap opera data is validated as a suitable tool for demonstrating the role that idioms play in spoken interaction. Soap operas, as well as other media genres, try to convey a believable linguistic world, exploiting idioms and providing contexts in which the pragmatic functions of idioms can be understood and analysed. This paper suggests that the analysis of idioms found in soap opera can contribute to the increase of knowledge and understanding concerning the communicative functions that idioms have in conversation. The data used in this study is drawn from the corpora of naturally-occurring conversation --- the Limerick Corpus of Irish English (LCIE) and the Cambridge and Nottingham Corpus of Discourse in English (CANCODE) --- and a corpus of the Irish soap opera, Fair City.

This article discusses the ways in which the spread and the overwhelming popularity of Turkish television series in Southeastern Europe influence the change in perception of Turks and Turkey, as well as how the serials are transforming the image of the Balkans and the Ottoman legacy in Turkey. Television serials significantly contributed to the shifting popular image of the "other," and initiated interactions unimaginable even a decade ago. These exchanges are both following and encouraging the breakdown of geohistorical boundaries that were set by the nationalist narratives in these regions at the turn of the 20th century, toward a more nuanced understanding of a shared past and a postnational future. This essay examines the place of home-grown soap operas, known as mega teledramas, in the lives of women in the South Asian island nation of Sri Lanka. While female audiences are often vilified for their consumption of mega teledramas in Sri Lanka, this study finds that these narratives have assumed a social role in women’s friendship networks, becoming a shared cultural source in their everyday lives. The representations in the mega teledramas were offering a range of diverse meanings to the women and their readings of women protagonists, central to the narratives, were intrinsically linked with nationally constructed notions of womanhood. ilustraciones, fotografías, diagramas Este trabajo busca entender los contextos culturales en los que surgieron los comentarios negativos, críticos o irónicos sobre la telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea (1999) aparecidos en Twitter con el marcador #BettyLaFea durante su reemisión de 2019. (Texto tomado de la fuente) This work seeks to understand the cultural contexts in which the negative, critical or ironic comments about the telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea (1999) appeared on Twitter with the marker #BettyLaFea during its reissue in 2019. With the intention of characterizing the heterogeneous audiences that commented with that marker, the first chapter brings some studies on television audiences and telenovelas from the 90s to a contemporaneity invaded by new communication and entertainment devices seeking to account for the role that a television consumer plays in the new communicative dynamics. The second chapter focuses on the political interpretations that were made of the telenovela, framing them within a type of online militancy in which citizenship is mixed with consumption. From the studies of emotions, specifically of love, the third chapter focuses on comments related to sexual attraction and affective relationships, trying to understand the rejection of the ways of loving and relating represented in Betty expressed by some users of the marker. Finally, looking at the memes about the telenovela, the fourth chapter analyzes the way in which many of those users tended to relate Betty to other television products of the past that seemed to express a certain nostalgia that made possible the fact that a twenty-year-old telenovela could be seen and commented on from Twitter. in contemporary times. Television is one of the most popular mass media for broadcasting different video content. The man is connected to television as its viewer who participates in the exchange of the message coming from this interactive media, and with the global development of television he developed his senses such as sight and hearing. Through its long-term development and audience, television has created various television genres, of which Latin American soap operas – telenovelas are one of the most popular types of television genres among viewers around the world. Telenovelas begin their journey to global success from classic broadcasts to television, and thanks to digital technology, the emergence of new media and the Internet they became a world-famous successful export product of Latin America. The emergence of new media changes the ways of transmission and presentation of audiovisual content, which leads to the convergence of media. With the convergence of media, especially television, and the emergence of new hybrid and interactive services such as Netflix, telenovelas and soap operas are gettinh their new digital feature, and audiences are becoming increasingly connected to them. At the end of this paper, content analysis shows the current list of Latin American soap operas – telenovelas on the Netflix application and data on the country of origin, number of seasons and episodes.

The older woman has been an unacknowledged character in fiction up until recently, when it has become the focus of some studies in the interconnected fields of literary and cultural gerontology. Given their popularity, TV shows are especially powerful in the propagation of images of any form of identity; accordingly, they can be regarded as an interesting and highly effective artistic and socio-cultural vehicle through which representations of old people and of old women in particular can be analysed and discussed. Despite the success of The Golden Girls in the 80s and the exponential ageing of the babyboom generation, TV series have also continued to depict older female characters as either motherly figures, always looking after their families at any cost, or as devilish older women characterised by inappropriate sexualised appearance and sexual behaviour. In contrast to this predominant tendency, Six Feet Under (2001-2005) stands out as a significant exception. In this article, we argue that Six Feet Under is innovative in presenting the older woman through the central character of Ruth Fisher (Francis Connor) and through the interaction of Ruth Fisher with other women within her same generation which face ageing from different perspectives. This study has been inspired by the political events in the past few years that signalled a general decline, instead of consolidation, of democracy in South Africa. The decline has caused a rising trust deficit between the government and the citizens of South Africa. These events have raised questions of the role of the media in the consolidation of democracy. Katrin Voltmer's pioneering work, The Media in Transitional Democracies (2013) shines an important light in delineating the role of the media in transitions, including democratic consolidation. Much of the focus of scholastic research in the subject of media and democracy has been on news and journalistic content. Jurgen Habermas' seminal work, The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere (1989) also accorded more weight to the rational and cognitive, as opposed to the affective and emotive aspects of the media when arguing in favour of emancipatory potential of the public sphere. The rational and cognitive aspects are generally associated with news and journalistic content (McGuigan, 2005: 430). Unlike Habermas, this study follows the lead by scholars like Van Zoonen (2006) and McGuigan's (2005) interest in the popular entertainment content which has often been regarded as having little significance in politics, especially democracy. In its emphasis on the consolidation aspect of South African democratic transition, the study is conducted against the backdrop of the broader ‘third wave' transitions of the early 1990's (Huntington, 1991). The study's theoretical framework is aligned with Christians et al.'s (2009) revision of the Four Theories (Siebert, et al, 1956) of the press. Their approach is useful because of its normative strength that opens the possibilities of media roles in democratization. The normative approach allows a free exploration of the potential of the media, instead of restricting the media to the political systems within which they operate. In addition, it aligns itself to Jim McGuigan's theory of the cultural public sphere which highlights the often-ignored political potency of popular cultural texts in the public sphere. McGuigan (2005: 430) argues that the affective or emotive aspects of popular cultural texts enhance, rather than hinder, the quality of political engagement in the public sphere. Through entertainment television programmes, democratic ways of life can be portrayed as part of everyday, ordinary life (Stevenson, 2010: 276). Against the widely held expectation that the media should play a positive role in democracies, some scholars have noted that in reality, “this is not necessarily so” (Jebril, Stetka & Loveless, 2013: 3). Rather, the media can serve dictatorships as happily as they serve democracies (Voltmer, 2013: 23). Using the case studies of two soap operas of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Muvhango and 7de Laan, the study explores the role of popular media in the enhancement or consolidation of democracy, and the circumstances under which this is carried out. The media of interest for this study is public service broadcasting (PSB). For most democracies of the third wave, especially in Africa, PSB has been an easy victim of political power. Because of its dependence on the state, PSB tends to be more susceptible to political interference than other media types. Like other PSBs, the SABC has clearly spelt-out objectives that are linked to the national developmental objectives, including the goal of promoting and deepening democracy. This connection makes it possible to evaluate the selected entertainment case studies against these objectives. The study uses Multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) because it allows for the analysis of text in its multimodal form such as visuals and audio. It equally allows for the application of analytical tools borrowed from film and television theories. By indirect measurement, MCDA model is used in the study to evaluate how democracy is represented (promoted, negated, omitted) in various aspects of the text.

In addition to the health risks, the covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the normal way of life and all its parts. It threatened the sense of ontological security that allows individuals to trust in the permanence of themselves and their environment. This feeling is an integral part of life in modern society and is reinforced by many factors, including television and its content, for example in the form of television series. This thesis explores the ways in which regular viewers of selected Czech television series and soap operas used their viewing as a source of reassurance and security in a time characterised by the disruption of the familiar and the creation of uncertainty. The first part of the thesis introduces key theoretical frameworks, including ontological security, everyday life, cultural studies and Roger Silverstone's work on understanding television as a source of ontological security. The second part of the thesis presents the methodology of the conducted qualitative research, which consisted of in-depth interviews with regular viewers of selected Czech television series and soap operas. The third part of the thesis presents the results of the research and their interpretation. The central motive that emerged from the respondents' statements was the security that watching soap operas...

TELEVISION soap operas ,COLLEGE students - Abstract
Soap operas are a popular culture phenomenon around the globe, including the Republic of Armenia (Armenia hereafter), a small ancient and changing society in post-Soviet era. A survey of 292 college students from Yerevan, the capital, as well as the provinces of Armenia was conducted in Yerevan. Employing uses and gratifications theory, this study investigated the students' reported motives in viewing soap operas in relations to their demographics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper questions Turkey’s “soft power” capacity in the Arab world and Middle East region. It attempts to analyse the role of the different actors involved in the projection of Turkey’s “soft power” vis-à-vis the Arab world. The paper distinguishes between public/governmental and private/non-governmental agents producing “soft power” and examines the interaction between them. The analysis first focuses on the conceptual framework that underlies Turkey’s paradigm shift from hard power to cultural, or “soft,” power in the Middle East. In particular, it examines the key elements of the “strategic depth” theory, or the so-called “Davutoğlu doctrine,” and shows how a new vision for Turkey’s international role and cultural attractiveness has been formulated. The paper then examines the tools and instruments used to project Turkey’s cultural power in the Middle East: in particular, the export of soap operas [diziler] to the Arab world and the launching of an Arabic-language TV channel (TRT Al Arabiyya). The author attempts to identify the actors involved in each of these strategies. Finally, the paper offers an assessment of the real impact of Turkish soap operas and TRT channel in the Middle East. It stresses the limits of Turkey’s “soft power” in the region both in terms of conceptual/theoretical relevance and contextual efficacy, and examines the impact of the Arab uprisings on Turkey’s projection of soft power vis-à-vis the region. The author concludes that Turkey’s cultural power has thus far produced limited outcomes and has had few tangible positive effects in increasing Turkey’s general power capacity in the Arab world.

This paper aims at discussing some images constituted as erotic on Brazilian television. The Brazilian soap operas Gabriela (Rede Globo, 1975), and Pantanal (Rede Manchete, 1990), and their main characters, Gabriela and Juma, will be analyzed in detail. The Veja Magazine had a most influent part in constituting such "erotic" subjects through the divulging and commenting of positive, seductive attributes on the bodies of the eroticized actresses. Gabriela and Juma are important characters because they support the stereotypes of a Brazilian sensuality and the strong mundane aspects, such as sex-appeal and dark bodies. The text explores the Brazilian television production (soap operas) in order to map the images which have contributed to build the subjectively Brazilian eroticism.

- Abstract
This article argues that representations within cultural audiovisual productions are an ideological vehicle that allow the consolidation and construction of culture, in the same way that it is strengthened through this same audiovisual content. Goffman (1972) affirms that through cinema, art and writing are how many ideals, canons of beauty, stereotypes or lifestyles are formed. And just as what is shown has that power over culture, Entman (1993) affirms that the power of information that is left in the dark is also critical. Under a qualitative methodology, she analyzes the lesbian/queer representation in the previously mentioned Colombian productions, and within them the plots and stereotypes that these productions have in common. We can also see the concept of passing, which, according to Samuels (2015) consists of marginalized groups posing as those of the majority in order to reduce the stigma with which they carry and cultivate a notion of equality, and finally the type of actresses that are chosen for these roles. In this way, we can better understand how representations affect and have affected society’s notion of lesbian culture in different areas; political, economic, cultural, among others. Throughout the research it becomes evident that in Colombia there is a significant connection between the type of lesbian representation in the media, and the way in which the lesbian/women who like women community is culturally perceived.

- Abstract
During the quarantine established by the COVID-19 pandemic, peruvian families extended their hours of attention to television, and demonstrated a preference for programs that present topics related to religiosity and domestic violence. Based on a systematization of audience ratings in Lima and six regions, the perception of young university students regarding the reasons for this preference was investigated. A survey was applied to 100 young university students about the rating registered between March 15 and June 30, 2020, of the soap opera “La rosa de Guadalupe” (in Mexican and Peruvian versions) and the “Nunca más”. It was concluded that both programs are preferred because they reflect situations that are familiar and resemble reality. It is also evidenced that television is the most influential medium for the dissemination of social patterns, due to its hegemonic presence in homes and due to its great expressive force to transmit messages from daily life., Durante la cuarentena establecida por la pandemia por COVID-19, las familias peruanas ampliaron su horario de atención a la televisión, y demostraron preferencia por programas que presentan temas vinculados a la religiosidad y a la violencia doméstica.

No other work of audiovisual fiction in the Brazil has managed to arouse the interest of the Brazilian public as much as soap operas. Having its origin linked to the literature of French novels in the nineteenth century, here, the genre became “Brazilianized”, adopting its own aesthetics and themes that approach the daily life of the Brazilian public, with emphasis on issues of social relevance involving health and illness. It is not uncommon for these products, through social merchandising, to address topics such as cancer, a disease that will affect 625,000 Brazilians for each year of the 2020- 2022 triennium. Since telenovelas address this health condition, our objective was, through the content analysis of the 9 pm telenovelas on Rede Globo de television, to understand how it is portrayed. In the study, we coded seven categories that described: 1. "Character Profile", 2. "Types of Cancer", 3. "Causes of Cancer", 4. "Cancer Findings and Symptoms", 5. "Submitted Treatments", 6. “Cancer Stage and Disease Outcome”, 7. “Dramatic Reasons”. We note that most of the characters who had the disease are adult women, from upper-middle social class, with the most varied tumors (seven types in all), without clear medical causes for the disease, with treatments that follow the recommendations of the medical literature specific, but with a high fatality rate. The high lethality of the characters was justified, from a fictional point of view, by the need to explore the suffering of the good guys, as punishment for cruel acts, a reason for their change in their moral conduct, as well as a dramatic resource that allowed changes in the directions of the analyzed narratives. “Causas do Câncer”, 4. “Descobertas do Câncer e Sintomas”, 5. “Tratamentos Submetidos”, 6. This research is the result of my process and training as a young researcher at the Universidad Santo Tomás 2020, within the project entitled "Fashion Studies in Colombia", led by Professor Edward Salazar. Through the ethnographic interview, I analyze various experiences of lesbian / queer women residing in Bogotá, focusing on the ways in which aesthetics create recognizable lesbian identities in the body: clothing, hair, makeup and other narrative / expressive vehicles . I contrast these experiences with the representations of lesbian women in various Colombian soap operas from the 1980s to the present day, along with some key references of global audiovisual production, as they allow us to delve into the configuration of the aesthetic and cultural codes of these women. I propose an exercise of triangulation of information, which concludes that the experiences of women in the construction of lesbian identities are strongly traversed by their aesthetic narratives in the body, as well as by certain cultural stories that circulate thanks to (or despite) representations on television. These identities are not fixed; On the contrary, they are mobile and polysemic in time, which allowed a visual record that, in addition to this article, ended in a process of research-creation of a book that narrates these stories of the body, clothing, representation and the identity. This paper revisits the literature on media and gender studies in search of works that help to discuss the case of Brazilian soap operas. A series of references coming from different theoretical perspectives, with emphasis in different countries and historical periods, bring up ideas and concepts that approach the contemporary desire to connect, to participate and to interact in terms conventionally associated to the female domain. Examples from specific soap operas suggest the ways in which these prime time daily soaps blend documentary and fiction conventions and treat the Brazilian nation in melodramatic terms. In doing so, soap operas have expanded what was conventionally treated as the female domain.
