We present Hubble Space Telescope measurements of surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) distances to early-type galaxies that have hosted Type Ia supernovae (SNIa). The agreement in the relative SBF and SNIa multicolor light curve shape and delta-m_15 distances is excellent. There is no systematic scale error with distance, and previous work has shown that SBF and SNIa give consistent ties to the Hubble flow. However, we confirm a systematic offset of about 0.25 mag in the distance zero points of the two methods, and we trace this offset to their respective Cepheid calibrations. SBF has in the past been calibrated with Cepheid distances from the H_0 Key Project team, while SNIa have been calibrated with Cepheid distances from the team composed of Sandage, Saha, and collaborators. When the two methods are calibrated in a consistent way, their distances are in superb agreement. Until the conflict over the ``long'' and ``short'' extragalactic Cepheid distances among many galaxies is resolved, we cannot definitively constrain the Hubble constant to better than about 10%, even leaving aside the additional uncertainty in the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud, common to both Cepheid scales. However, recent theoretical SBF predictions from stellar population models favor the Key Project Cepheid scale, while the theoretical SNIa calibration lies between the long and short scales. In addition, while the current SBF distance to M31/M32 is in good agreement with the RR Lyrae and red giant branch distances, calibrating SBF with the longer Cepheid scale would introduce a 0.3 mag offset with respect to the RR Lyrae scale., Comment: 13 pages, 3 PostScript figures, LaTeX with AASTeX 5.02 and natbib.sty v7.0 (included). We present photometric observations of an apparent Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) at a redshift of ~1.7, the farthest SN observed to date. SN 1997ff, was discovered in a repeat observation by the HST of the HDF-), and serendipitously monitored with NICMOS on HST throughout the GTO campaign. The SN type can be determined from the host galaxy type:an evolved, red elliptical lacking enough recent star formation to provide a significant population of core-collapse SNe. The class- ification is further supported by diagnostics available from the observed colors and temporal behavior of the SN, both of which match a typical SN Ia. The photo- metric record of the SN includes a dozen flux measurements in the I, J, and H bands spanning 35 days in the observed frame. The redshift derived from the SN photometry, z=1.7+/-0.1, is in excellent agreement with the redshift estimate of z=1.65+/-0.15 derived from the U_300,B_450,V_606,I_814,J_110,J_125,H_160, H_165,K_s photometry of the galaxy. Optical and near-infrared spectra of the host provide a very tentative spectroscopic redshift of 1.755. Fits to observations of the SN provide constraints for the redshift-distance relation of SNe~Ia and a powerful test of the current accelerating Universe hypothesis. The apparent SN brightness is consistent with that expected in the decelerating phase of the preferred cosmological model, Omega_M~1/3, Omega_Lambda~2/3. It is inconsistent with grey dust or simple luminosity evolution, candidate astro- physical effects which could mimic past evidence for an accelerating Universe from SNe Ia at z~0.5.We consider several sources of possible systematic error including lensing, SN misclassification, selection bias, and calibration errors. We present spectral analysis of early observations of the Type IIn supernova 1998S using the general non-local thermodynamic equilibrium atmosphere code \tt PHOENIX}. We model both the underlying supernova spectrum and the overlying circumstellar interaction region and produce spectra in good agreement with observations. The early spectra are well fit by lines produced primarily in the circumstellar region itself, and later spectra are due primarily to the supernova ejecta. Intermediate spectra are affected by both regions. A mass-loss rate of order $\dot M \sim 0.0001-0.001$\msol yr$^{-1}$ is inferred for a wind speed of 100-1000 \kmps. We have calculated fast direct spectral model fits to two early-time spectra of the Type-II plateau SN 1999em, using the SYNOW synthetic spectrum code. The first is an extremely early blue optical spectrum and the second a combined HST and optical spectrum obtained one week later. Spectroscopically this supernova appears to be a normal Type II and these fits are in excellent agreement with the observed spectra. Our direct analysis suggests the presence of enhanced nitrogen. We have further studied these spectra with the full NLTE general model atmosphere code PHOENIX. While we do not find confirmation for enhanced nitrogen (nor do we rule it out), we do require enhanced helium. An even more intriguing possible line identification is complicated Balmer and He I lines, which we show falls naturally out of the detailed calculations with a shallow density gradient. We also show that very early spectra such as those presented here combined with sophisticated spectral modeling allows an independent estimate of the total reddening to the supernova, since when the spectrum is very blue, dereddening leads to changes in the blue flux that cannot be reproduced by altering the ``temperature'' of the emitted radiation. These results are extremely encouraging since they imply that detailed modeling of early spectra can shed light on both the abundances and total extinction of SNe II, the latter improving their utility and reliability as distance indicators., Comment: to appear in ApJ, 2000, 545

We present optical spectra, obtained with the Keck 10-m telescope, of two high-redshift type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the High-z Supernova Search Team: SN 1999ff at z=0.455 and SN 1999fv at z~1.2, the highest-redshift published SN Ia spectrum. Both SNe were at maximum light when the spectra were taken. We compare our high-z spectra with low-z normal and peculiar SNe Ia as well as with SNe Ic, Ib, and II. There are no significant differences between SN 1999ff and normal SNe Ia at low redshift. We have measured the rest-frame B,V, and I-band light curves of a high-redshift type Ia supernova (SN Ia), SN 1999Q (z=0.46), using HST and ground-based near-infrared detectors. A goal of this study is the measurement of the color excess, E_{B-I}, which is a sensitive indicator of interstellar or intergalactic dust which could affect recent cosmological measurements from high-redshift SNe Ia. Our observations disfavor a 30% opacity of SN Ia visual light by dust as an alternative to an accelerating Universe. This statement applies to both Galactic-type dust (rejected at the 3.4 sigma confidence level) and greyer dust (grain size > 0.1 microns; rejected at the 2.3 to 2.6 sigma confidence level) as proposed by Aguirre (1999). The rest-frame $I$-band light cur ve shows the secondary maximum a month after B maximum typical of nearby SNe Ia of normal luminosi ty, providing no indication of evolution as a function of redshift out to z~0.5. We have compared the risetime for samples of nearby and high-redshift type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The fiducial risetime of the nearby SNe Ia is 2.5+/-0.4 days longer than the proemial risetime determined by Goldhaber (1998a,b) for high-redshift SNe Ia from the Supernova Cosmology Project. The statistical likelihood that the two samples have different fiducial risetimes is high (5.8 sigma) and indicates possible evolution between the samples of SNe Ia. We consider the likely effects of several sources of systematic error, but none of these resolves the difference in the risetimes. We present calibrated photometric measurements of the earliest detections of nearby type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The set of ~30 new, unfiltered CCD observations delineate the early rise behavior of SNe Ia > 18 to 10 days before maximum. Using simple empirical models, we demonstrate the strong correlation between the risetime (i.e., the time between explosion and maximum), the post-rise light-curve shape, and the peak luminosity. Using a variety of light-curve shape methods, we find the risetime to B maximum for a SN Ia with Delta m15(B)=1.1 mag and peak M_V=-19.45 mag to be 19.5+/-0.2 days. We find that the peak brightness of SNe Ia is correlated with their risetime; SNe Ia which are 0.10 mag brighter at peak in the B-band require 0.80+/-0.05 days longer to reach maximum light. We determine the effects of several possible sources of systematic errors, but none of these significantly impacts the inferred risetime. We present observations of SN1997cy, a supernova discovered as part of the Mount Stromlo Abell Cluster SN Search, which does not easily fit into the traditional classification scheme for supernovae. This object's extraordinary optical properties and coincidence with GRB970514, a short duration gamma ray burst, suggest a second case, after SN1998bw/GRB980425, for a SN-GRB association. SN1997cy is among the most luminous SNe yet discovered and has a peculiar spectrum. We present evidence that SN1997cy ejected approximately 2 solar masses of 56Ni, supported by its late-time light curve, and FeII/[FeIII] lines in its spectrum, although it is possible that both these observations can be explained via circumstellar interaction. While SN1998bw and SN1997cy appear to be very different objects with respect to both their gamma ray and optical properties, SN1997cy and the optical transient associated with GRB970508 have roughly similar late-time optical behavior. This similarity may indicate that the late-time optical output of these two intrinsically bright transient events have a common physical process. Although the connection between GRB970514 and SN1997cy is suggestive, it is not conclusive. However, if this association is real, followup of short duration GRBs detected with BATSE or HETE2 should reveal objects similar to SN1997cy., Comment: 26 pages including 6 postscript figures and 3 tables. A low-dispersion Keck I spectrum of SN 1980K taken in August 1995 (t = 14.8 yr after explosion) and a November 1997 MDM spectrum (t = 17.0 yr) show broad 5500 km s^{-1} emission lines of H\alpha, [O I] 6300,6364 A, and [O II] 7319,7330 A. Weaker but similarly broad lines detected include [Fe II] 7155 A, [S II] 4068,4072 A, and a blend of [Fe II] lines at 5050--5400 A. The presence of strong [S II] 4068,4072 A emission but a lack of [S II] 6716,6731 A emission suggests electron densities of 10^{5-6} cm^{-3}. From the 1997 spectra, we estimate an H\alpha flux of 1.3 \pm 0.2 \times 10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} indicating a 25% decline from 1987--1992 levels during the period 1994 to 1997, possibly related to a reported decrease in its nonthermal radio emission., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astronomical Journal

We present 1210 Johnson/Cousins B,V,R, and I photometric observations of 22 recent type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): SN 1993ac, SN 1993ae, SN 1994M, SN 1994S, SN 1994T, SN 1994Q, SN 1994ae, SN 1995D, SN 1995E, SN 1995al, SN 1995ac, SN 1995ak, SN 1995bd, SN 1996C, SN 1996X, SN 1996Z, SN 1996ab, SN 1996ai, SN 1996bk, SN 1996bl, SN 1996bo, and SN 1996bv. Most of the photometry was obtained at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in a cooperative observing plan aimed at improving the data base for SN Ia. We describe and model high velocity (~15,000 km/s) Lyman alpha and Balmer alpha emission from supernova remnant 1987A seen in September and October 1997 with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. Part of this emission comes from a reverse shock located at ~75% of the radius of the inner boundary of the inner circumstellar ring and confined within 30 degrees of the equatorial plane. Departure from axisymmetry in the Lyman alpha and Balmer alpha emission correlates with that seen in nonthermal radio emission and reveals an asymmetry in the circumstellar gas distribution. We also see diffuse high velocity Lyman alpha emission from supernova debris inside the reverse shock that may be due to excitation by nonthermal particles accelerated by the shock., Comment: 10 pages, 3 postscript figures. Recently a Type Ic supernova, SN 1998bw, was discovered coincident with a gamma-ray burst, GRB 980425. The supernova had unusual radio, optical, and spectroscopic properties. We explore here models based upon helium stars in the range 9 - 14 Msun and carbon-oxygen stars 6 - 11 Msun which experience unusually energetic explosions (kinetic energy 0.5 - 2.8 x 10**52 erg). Bolometric light curves and multi-band photometry are calculated and compared favorably with observations. Both LTE and non-LTE spectra are also calculated for the model that agrees best with the light curve, a carbon-oxygen core of 6 Msun exploded with a kinetic energy of 2.2 x 10**52 erg. We also examine potential mechanisms for producing the observed gamma-ray burst (GRB) - shock break-out and relativistic shock deceleration in circumstellar material. For spherically symmetric models, both fail to produce a GRB of even the low luminosity inferred for GRB 980425. The high explosion energies required to understand the supernova are in contrast to what is expected for such massive stars and may indicate that a new sort of explosion has been identified, possibly the consequence of a collapsar (Woosley 1993, 1996). Indeed a more likely explanation for what was seen is a highly asymmetric explosion in which the GRB was produced by a relativistic jet, perhaps viewed obliquely, and only a fraction of the total stellar mass was ejected, the remainder accreting into a black hole. The ejected mass (but not the 56Ni mass), explosion energy, and velocities may then be smaller. The High-Z Supernova Search is an international collaboration to discover and monitor type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) at $z > 0.2$ with the aim of measuring cosmic deceleration and global curvature. Our collaboration has pursued a basic understanding of supernovae in the nearby Universe, discovering and observing a large sample of objects, and developing methods to measure accurate distances with SN Ia. This paper describes the extension of this program to $z \geq 0.2$, outlining our search techniques and follow-up program. We have devised high-throughput filters which provide accurate two-color restframe $B$ and $V$ light curves of SN Ia, enabling us to produce precise, extinction-corrected luminosity distances in the range $0.25 < z < 0.55$. Sources of systematic error from K-corrections, extinction, selection effects, and evolution are investigated, and their effects estimated. We present photometric and spectral observations of SN 1995K, our program's first supernova, and use the data to obtain a precise measurement of the luminosity distance to the $z=0.479$ host galaxy. This object, when combined with a nearby sample of SN, yields an estimate for the matter density of the Universe of $\Omega_M = -0.2^{+1.0}_{-0.8}$ if $\Omega_\Lambda = 0$. For a spatially flat universe composed of normal matter and a cosmological constant, we find $\Omega_M = 0.4^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$, $\Omega_\Lambda = 0.6^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$. We demonstrate that with a sample of $\sim 30$ objects, we should be able to determine relative luminosity distances over the range $0 < z< 0.5$ with sufficient precision to measure $\Omega_M$ with an uncertainty of $\pm 0.2$., Comment: 51 pages, 14 figures, To Appear in the Astrophysical Journal

We present observations of 10 type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) between 0.16 < z < 0.62. With previous data from our High-Z Supernova Search Team, this expanded set of 16 high-redshift supernovae and 34 nearby supernovae are used to place constraints on the Hubble constant (H_0), the mass density (Omega_M), the cosmological constant (Omega_Lambda), the deceleration parameter (q_0), and the dynamical age of the Universe (t_0). The distances of the high-redshift SNe Ia are, on average, 10% to 15% farther than expected in a low mass density (Omega_M=0.2) Universe without a cosmological constant. Different light curve fitting methods, SN Ia subsamples, and prior constraints unanimously favor eternally expanding models with positive cosmological constant (i.e., Omega_Lambda > 0) and a current acceleration of the expansion (i.e., q_0 < 0). With no prior constraint on mass density other than Omega_M > 0, the spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia are consistent with q_0 <0 at the 2.8 sigma and 3.9 sigma confidence levels, and with Omega_Lambda >0 at the 3.0 sigma and 4.0 sigma confidence levels, for two fitting methods respectively. Fixing a ``minimal'' mass density, Omega_M=0.2, results in the weakest detection, Omega_Lambda>0 at the 3.0 sigma confidence level. For a flat-Universe prior (Omega_M+Omega_Lambda=1), the spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia require Omega_Lambda >0 at 7 sigma and 9 sigma level for the two fitting methods. A Universe closed by ordinary matter (i.e., Omega_M=1) is ruled out at the 7 sigma to 8 sigma level. We estimate the size of systematic errors, including evolution, extinction, sample selection bias, local flows, gravitational lensing, and sample contamination. We have initiated a three-year project to find supernovae (SNe) in a well-defined sample of high-density southern Abell clusters with redshifts $z\leq0.08$. These observations will provide a volume-limited sample of SNe Ia to more than a magnitude below their peak brightness, and will enable us to: (1) measure the luminosity function of SNe, (2) further explore the correlation of light curve shape with the absolute luminosity of SNe Ia to better understand SNe Ia as distance indicators, (3) measure SN rates, (4) measure the bulk motion of the Local Group using SNe Ia, and (5) directly compare SN Ia distances to brightest cluster galaxy distances. We use the MaCHO wide-field 2-color imager on the 1.3m telescope at Mount Stromlo to routinely monitor $\sim 12$ clusters per week. We describe our technique for target selection and scheduling search observations, and for finding and identifying SN candidates. We have obtained photometry and spectra of SN~1991T which extend more than 1000 days past maximum light, by far the longest a SN~Ia has been followed. Although SN~1991T exhibited nearly normal photometric behavior in the first 400 days following maximum, by 600 days its decline had slowed, and by 950~days the supernova brightness was consistent with a constant apparent magnitude of $m_B=21.30$. Spectra near maximum showed minor variations on the SN~Ia theme which grew less conspicuous during the exponential decline. At 270 days the nebular spectrum was composed of Fe and Co lines common to SNe~Ia. However, by 750 days past maximum light, these lines had shifted in wavelength, and were superimposed on a strong blue continuum. The luminosity of SN~1991T at 950 days is more than $9.0\times10^{38}(D/13~{\rm Mpc})^2$~ergs~s$^{-1}$ with a rate of decline of less than $0.04$ mags/100~days.
