Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] is recognized as an independent factor of arteriosclerosis. The aim of this study was to appreciate the profile of Lipoprotein (a) recognized as an independent factor of arteriosclerosis in the monitoring of HIV-infected patients receiving Nevirapine (NVP) regimens, an antiretroviral known to reduce cardiovascular disease risk. The study population (136 subjects) comprise of 106 HIV-infected subjects, and 30 HIV-negative individuals. The 106 HIV-infected subjects were divided into groups as follows. HAART-untreated (27), HIV-infected subjects that did not receive antiretroviral treatment; HAART-6M (36), HIV-infected subjects on antiretroviral treatment for six months; and HAART-12M (43), HIV-infected subjects on antiretroviral treatment for twelve months. All recruited patients had normal blood lipids values (Total cholesterol < 5.2 mmol/L, Triglycerides < 2 g/L, HDLc > 0.9 mmol/L). The Lp(a) levels were significantly higher in the HIV-infected group compared to the control (p = 0.0036). Within the HIV-infected subjects, Lp(a) level was found to be higher in HAART-treated group compared to HAART naive group (p=0.004). Infected subjects on the antiretroviral treatment for12 months had higher Lp(a) levels than those treated for 6 months (p=0.034). This study shows that adequate management of metabolic abnormalities of HAART-treated HIV-infected patients must include periodic measurement of Lp(a) levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The CFTR gene (Cystic Fibrosis conductance Transmembrane Regulator) is the gene responsible for Cystic Fibrosis, the most common severe autosomal recessive disease in Europeans. It has been extensively explored in several European and European-derived populations, but poorly studied in the other major human groups. Aim: To characterize the variability of the CFTR gene in an African population. Subjects and methods: Using DGGE, all 27 exons (4443  bp) and 2184  bp of the flanking intronic regions of the CFTR gene were studied in a random sample of 45 Mossìì from Burkina Faso (Western sub-Saharan Africa). Results: Sixteen variable sites were found: 13 SNPs (one in the promoter region, four non-synonymous and five synonymous in the exons and three in the introns) and three intronic STRs. Only the promoter site (  −−  94 G/T), slightly polymorphic in the present survey, was not variable in different European populations. Comparison between Western Africans, Eastern Africans, Europeans and Eastern Asians showed that alleles at two intronic STRs (Tn and (TG)m in intron 8), four exonic (M470V, 2694 T/G, 4002 A/G and 4521 G/A) and one intronic (875++40 A/G) SNPs have very different frequencies among at least two major human groups. Moreover, the overall degree of non-synonymous variability in Mossìì is much lower than that in Europeans. A possible interpretation of this finding is proposed. Conclusions: The CFTR gene has been since long hypothesized to have undergone selection in Europeans. Background Objectives: Dengue is an emerging vector-borne viral disease in tropical and subtropical areas such as Burkina Faso that experienced dengue outbreak in, 2013, 2016, 2017 and more recently in 2023. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and dengue serotype in suspected patients in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso., Methods: The study was conducted during October and November 2023 and included suspected febrile patients seen at HOSCO and CERBA. Plasma or serum samples were used for the detection of non-structural proteins (NS1) and IgM and IgG antibodies against the dengue virus using SD Bioline Dengue Duo rapid detection kit. Viral RNA was extracted using the QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit and dengue serotypes were determined by real-time RT-PCR using the Dengue Real-TM Genotype kit., Results: The study population consisted of 896 patients, including 397 (44.3%) men and 499 (55.7%) women. Dengue seroprevalence was 16.5% (148/896) with 14.1% (126/896) of patients positive for the NS1 antigen, 1.3% (12/896) positive for IgM, and 2.7% (24/896) positive for IgG. Serotyping among 40 out of 45 positive patients revealed 77.5% (31/40) DENV-3, 17.5% (7/40) DENV-1, and 5.0% (2/40) DENV-2., Interpretation Conclusion: The present study report a high seroprevalence of dengue virus infection among patients during the months considered as the peak of infection in Burkina Faso. The results revealed a predominance of DENV-3. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In recent years, African countries have been faced with a rapid increase in morbidity and mortality due to this pathology. Management is often complicated by the high treatment costs, side effects and the increasing occurrence of resistance to treatments. The identification of new active ingredients extracted from endemic medicinal plants is definitively an interesting approach for the implementation of new therapeutic strategies: their extraction is often lower cost; their identification is based on an ethnobotanical history and a tradipratic approach; their use by low-income populations is simpler; this can help in the development of new synthetic molecules that are more active, more effective and with fewer side effects. The objective of this review is to document the molecules derived from African medicinal plants whose in vitro anti-cancer activities and the mechanisms of molecular actions have been identified. From the scientific databases Science Direct , PubMed and Google Scholar, we searched for publications on compounds isolated from African medicinal plants and having activity on cancer cells in culture. The data were analyzed in particular with regard to the cytotoxicity of the compounds and their mode of action. A total of 90 compounds of these African medicinal plants were selected. They come from nine chemical groups: alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, quinones, saponins, steroids, terpenoids, xanthones and organic sulfides. These compounds have been associated with several cellular effects: i) Cytotoxicity, including caspase activation, alteration of mitochondrial membrane potential, and/or induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS); ii) Anti-angiogenesis; iii) Anti-metastatic properties. This review points out that the cited African plants are rich in active ingredients with anticancer properties. It also stresses that screening of these anti-tumor active ingredients should be continued at the continental scale. Extremely low birth weight infants are a public health problem in developing countries., The Objective: of this study was to evaluate the prognosis of extremely low birth weight newborns hospitalized at Saint Camille Hospital in Ouagadougou (HOSCO)., Method: This was a descriptive and analytical study with retrospective data collection on newborns with birth weight <1000g, in the neonatology department from January 2017 to December 2021., Results: A total of 319 newborns were admitted giving a hospital frequency of 8.62%. Male sex was predominant with a sex ratio of 1.02. The mean age was 0.18 ± 0.71 days. The main signs on admission were hypothermia 88.40% and respiratory distress 92.16%. The evolution was marked by 92.79% of deaths of which 90.20% occurred during the early neonatal period. Hypothermia, birth outside HOSCO and maternal age less than 20 years were the factors associated with mortality., Conclusion: The management of low birth weight remains difficult because of the very limited resources in our countries. The relative lack of information on breast cancer etiology in Burkina Faso led us to undertake the present work to highlight risk factors. This prospective study was conducted using a questionnaire between January 2015 and February 2016 on women admitted to Yalgado OUEDRAOGO hospital, for consultation or supervision. The characteristics of multiparous breast cancer patients (n = 44) were compared with their non-multiparous counterparts (n = 36). The study found that increased risk of breast cancer among non-multiparous cases was related to body mass index (BMI) (p <0.001), age at menopause (p <0.004) and use of oral contraception (p <0.021) while abortion (p <0.002) was a risk factor among multiparous cases. These results suggest that even if multiparity is associated with a decreased risk in some women, avoidance of abortion during reproductive life should be recommended. Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is responsible for about 900 deaths every year in Burkina Faso. In this country, serological screening for hepatitis B and C viruses is only carried out systematically among blood donors. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and genotypes of HCV among blood donors using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR, respectively., Materials and Methods: Serum samples were screened for antibodies to HCV using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ARCHITECT-i1000SR-ABBOTT). All the reactive samples for HCV antibodies were re-tested using a second enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Bio-Rad, Marnes la Coquette, France) for confirmation. RNA was detected in all the reactive samples for antibodies to HCV. HCV RNA positive samples were genotyped using the HCV Real-TM Genotype kit (Sacace Biotechnologies, Italy)., Results: Among 2,200 blood donors, the prevalences of antibodies to HCV and viral RNA were 4.4% (95% confidence interval=3.5-5.3) and 1.5% (95% confidence interval=1.0-2.0), respectively. Among HCV RNA carriers, genotyping showed that HCV genotypes 2 and 3 were the most prevalent as they were detected in 18 (56.3%) and 5 (15.6%) individuals, respectively. HCV genotypes 1a and 4 were the least frequent among the blood donors. HCV mixed genotypes 2/3 and 2/4 were also detected among the blood donors., Conclusion: The prevalence of HCV found in this study is lower than previously reported prevalences. Large-scale studies are needed to obtain a better picture of the molecular epidemiology of HCV in Burkina Faso.

Background: The high prevalence of numerous transfusion-transmitted infectious diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and syphilis in sub-Saharan Africa affects the safety of blood for recipients. This study was undertaken with the aim of determining the seroprevalence of HIV, HCV, HBV, syphilis and socio-demographic risk factors associated with blood donation in a new regional blood transfusion centre in Burkina Faso., Material and Methods: Sera samples were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), antibodies to HCV, HIV types 1 and 2 and to Treponema pallidum using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and Rapid Plasma Reagin test (RPR) respectively. All the reactive samples for HIV, HBsAg, and HCV were confirmed using a second enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Antibodies to Treponema pallidum were confirmed with a Treponema pallidum haemagglutination test (TPHA)., Results: From the total of 4,520 blood donors in 2009, 1,348 (29.82%) were infected with at least one pathogen and 149 (3.30%) had serological evidence of multiple infections. The overall seroprevalence rate of HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis was 2.21%, 14.96%, 8.69% and 3.96%, respectively. Among blood donors with multiples infections, the most common dual or triple combinations were HBsAg-HCV (1.39%), HBsAg-syphilis (0.66%) and HBsAg-HCV-syphilis (0.11%). The highest prevalences of HBsAg and HIV were found among blood donors from rural areas and in the age groups of 20-29 years and >40 years old, respectively., Conclusion: HBV and HCV remain the greatest threats to blood safety in Burkina Faso. Strict selection and retention of voluntary, non-remunerated low-risk blood donors are recommended to improve blood safety in the regional blood transfusion centre of Koudougou.

The genus Chryseobacterium and other genera belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae include organisms that can behave as human pathogens and are known to cause different kinds of infections. Several species of Flavobacteriaceae, including Chryseobacterium indologenes, are naturally resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics (including carbapenems), due to the production of a resident metallo-beta-lactamase. Although C. indologenes presently constitutes a limited clinical threat, the incidence of infections caused by this organism is increasing in some settings, where isolates that exhibit multidrug resistance phenotypes (including resistance to aminoglycosides and quinolones) have been detected. Here, we report the identification and characterization of a new IND-type variant from a C. indologenes isolate from Burkina Faso that is resistant to beta-lactams and aminoglycosides. The levels of sequence identity of the new variant to other IND-type metallo-beta-lactamases range between 72 and 90% (for IND-4 and IND-5, respectively). The purified enzyme exhibited N-terminal heterogeneity and a posttranslational modification consisting of the presence of a pyroglutamate residue at the N terminus. IND-6 shows a broad substrate profile, with overall higher turnover rates than IND-5 and higher activities than IND-2 and IND-5 against ceftazidime and cefepime.

Many clinical species of bacteria were isolated from biological samples such as urines, blood and wound in Saint Camille medical centre of Ouagadougou. Among the concerned species, the most important members were Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. These p-lactamases producing isolates were directly screened by PCR to identify the nature of the amplified genes responsible for penicillin destroying activity. Therefore specific TEM and SHV primers were used. The PCR products were sequenced. The sequencing results indicated that the parental forms bla(TEM-1) and bla(SHV-1) were the most common determinants of beta-lactamase found, respectively in Escherichia species and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The bacterial susceptibility analysis by MICs measurement clearly correlated the presence of concerned beta-lactamase determinants and their resistance patterns. This study is part of a set of investigations carried out by our laboratory to assess the beta-lactamase incidence in the failure of beta-lactam therapy. In particular, the purpose of this study was to determine the precise nature of beta-lactamase supporting the low susceptibility of host bacteria towards penicillins.
